  1. Not a fan of it at all. Story is mind-numbingly boring at best and a travesty at work. Art style is way too overly gaudy for my taste, and this is honestly the first time that I wasn't impressed with a FE OST.

And to be honest, even the gameplay isn't that great to me. I'm not a fan of the switch to a hyper offensive style of play and subsequent weaking of enemy phase play. Was also not a big fan of the constant enemy reinforcement spam, especially on later maps.

Also didn't like how much more difficult it was compared to most of the previous games. It's the only FE game I still haven't beaten because of how unfairly difficult the late maps are, even on Normal.

The game's economy with how money and materials are handled is lousy, unit balancing is out the window with just how badly early game units are outclassed, and I prefer the old style of the weapon triangle compared to the break mechanic.

So yeah, almost every change was a downgrade in my opinion.

It may amount to nothing, but I noticed just earlier today that waves 2 and 3 came out exactly one month apart. 3rd of February for wave 2, 3rd of March for wave 3. Again, take it with a grain of salt, but perhaps in two weeks we'll get wave 4? Maybe?

Personally, I hope they don't hold out on us very long, seeing how this wave, like the rest of the DLC, has blatantly been done since before the game was released. Considering the speed at which the DLC has been released, though, I doubt they will keep us waiting. They seem intent on getting the extra content for this game out of the way fast.

One thing I do hope they handle like Cindered Shadows is letting us recruit the new characters in every file as long as the campaign has been beaten once. The game is long enough, I don't want to be forced to do seven extra maps for a few new characters if I don't feel like doing them.

I agree. I really don't want to have to beat the new story over and over whenever I do a new playthrough just to recruit the new characters.

  3. Gotta say, I'm intrigued so far. Manga is a purely story focused format so they actually have to care this time.

Alear having more explicit emotions is a major plus, actually looking shocked at being told they're a thousand year old dragon and that Lumera is his mom, compared to the mild surprise he has in the game. Lythos actually having villages and people is also good.

Also, Clanne and Framme actually get to show why they're competent stewards, compared to the game where they need to be rescued at the first sign of trouble.

^ This happened to me too. I only figured it out like 10 or so chapters in and got a huge dump.

Another thing I'd like to change is how the cooking menu works. It doesn't make sense to have to pick the people before seeing the meals. My process currently is: Pick the first 2 people as dummies to see the meals, find the meal that gives the best bonuses that the cook is good at making, open a tab on SF to see the list of preferred foods and Ctrl+F to find the list of who likes it, and then pick who i want to eat it from there. This is very awkward.

It would make a LOT more sense if you would first see the meals, pick one, and THEN pick the units, where you see a list of who does and doesn't like them.

Heck, that's exactly what Three Houses did. Pick the meal, then you get to see which characters benefit most. Kind of backwards to do the opposite.

For me, their biggest misstep in terms of characters was having the first three characters be Vander, Clanne, and Framme. I mean, they have to have known that "avatar worshipping" characters were going to be divisive at best, right? And then the first three characters are all variations on the theme of lives devoted to the service of the avatar. And then their supports with each other and with the avatar are largely doubling down on this character trait rather than trying to add depth to them. It made a very bad first impression for me, and it took a while until I really started to warm to some of the other characters. I think that it's always going to be a mistake to make too many early characters be too similar, regardless of what they're like. If you start off with a group of different personalities, it's much more likely that more people are going to have at least one of them they can latch onto.

    Agreed.

I think the Alear and Framme support genuinely frustrated me with how it felt like a waste of time in the end. They basically end the support the same way they began it, with Framme being a nuisance (but Alear apparently doesn't mind that now for some stupid reason).

One thing I forgot to add in my last post: you can replay the Divine Paralogues. You can't gain EXP (and your units don't stay dead), but you can! It would be nice if you could redo the vanilla story chapters and Paralogues in the same way. There are some great setpieces that would be really fun to play again at will!

That's a good idea. An easy way to revisit a map for whatever reason you want without having to replay the whole game.

  7. Engage has super bad pacing issues. I dare say probably some of the worst in this franchise in my opinion.

The first 16 chapters or so are spent meandering around and barely moving the plot forward other than just showing off all the countries. Then, when they finally decide to have a plot, it's only really from Chapter 20 onwards and it feels super rushed and half-baked with every chapter jam packed with exposition. Certainly doesn't help that Alear only plays the part of the good-hearted amnesiac for over half the plot before suddenly getting a new plot twist every chapter. Seriously, this might just be me, but regardless if the premise was simple or not, this was amateurish writing.

Kind of why it bugs me so much when the GBA games get lumped in with Engage because "they all went for simple stories". Yes, their premises are simple, but the GBA games still tried a heck of a lot more and told more cohesive plots with far better worldbuilding.

The problem is that due to the game structure, NG+ could easily break the game.

There are arguments which could be made about keeping supports or even SP levels/unlocks.

Bit then that would be one very limited NG+ option…

And depending on how they do it, that could still be seriously gamebreaking.

I don't see what the problem would be.

You gotta beat the game the normal legit way to even get access to NG+. I think having the ability to create characters that do whatever you want is a pretty suitable reward.

And if you don't want any of that, you easily just start a new one from scratch. It's a win win for everyone.

If people are wondering who developed Engage compared to who did the recent games

      Hide contents

It looks like no one from Three Houses worked on Engage.

Based on the credits, Three Houses and Engage don't even share the same writers - and it makes sense since Three Houses was written by Koei Tecmo (a fact a lot of FE fans don't even know)

    Engage:

    Scenario Director

Nami Komuro (IS, same writer as Awakening and Paper Mario: The Origami King, also scenario writer of Fates)

    Synthese Co., Ltd.

    Scenario Writer

Yukinori Kitajima (worked also on Fates)

Hiroshi Takane (worked also on Fates)

    Takayoshi Muto

    Tatsuro Hamano

    Crico,Inc.

    Scenario Writer

    Masaya Ikemura

    Eiichi Konomura

    Ako Tsubaki

    Kei Seta

    Utonapi

    Three Houses (and Three Hopes):

    Lead Scenario

    Yuki Ikeno (KT)

    Scenario

    Ryohei Hayashi (KT)

    Mari Okamoto (KT)

Both games don't even share the same Producers and Directors.

    Engage:

    Producer

    Masahiro Higuchi

    Producer

    Genki Yokota

    Toyokazu Nonaka

    Sub Producer

    Kohei Maeda

    Director

    Tsutomu Tei

    Director

    Kenta Nakanishi

    Three Houses:

    Producer

    Masahiro Higuchi

    Hitoshi Yamagami

    Director

    Toshiyuki Kusakihara

    Genki Yokota

    Sub Director

    Kenta Nakanishi

    Assistant Director

    Kazuyoshi Toriyama

Yeah something obviously felt off about this hopefully the Three Houses team makes another new game later down or is already at work.

I sincerely hope Kusakihara directs another game.

One thing he always talks about in interviews is how important the story is to him, and the two games he's directed (Echoes and Three Houses) are the best written FE games of the past decade or so.

If there comes another game from the Three Houses team, I will be very happy.

Really interesting to note that the royals (sans Alear and Veyle) don't have prf weapons which is surprising (also rip Alfred, Céline and Fogado who wont be able to use the S rank weapons in their special classes oof).

Speaking of S rank weapons, seems like Nova is our S rank tome I think. Also swords, lances, axes and knives have two legendary weapons, a basic one and one that acts as a smash weapon. The S rank staff fully charges someone's engage meter.

    That's surprising.

I already figured the Emblems were taking the place of legendary weapons, but I had figured the older royals would still get some kind of royal weapon like Elincia did with Amiti.

    Wierd.

  11. Spoiler

Holy cow did they drop the ball hard on the writing in this game. The story is basic and dumb. All the characters are tropey and don't develop. And the character endings are largely gone outside of the Avatar and even those are basic.

Just...wow....how did we go from Three Houses, one of the most story heavy and character driven games in the franchise, to this garbage?

For shame IS. The next game better correct this.

Wow, Alear being the only one with a paired ending makes me sad. I really like seeing what everyone got up to when the games came to an end, that's probably my biggest disappointment with Engage. Hope they don't do this again.

Honestly, I think a lot of things with Engage are going to be a one time only thing, and that the next game will pivot back to something more story heavy

The Voice Acting: The English Dub sounds a hell of a lot more phoned-in than Three Houses. Everyone from the previews sounds like they believe it is a GENERIC ANIME GACHA GAME and just don't this game justice. I don't really play in JP dubs, I usually tough it out despite my loathing of modern VAs, but I genuinely think some characters will leave a poor impression just by voice alone.

Even I'm not overly impressed so far and I'm an ardent defender of English VA's 99% of the time. But, after the spectacular English voice acting in Echoes, Three Houses, and Three Hopes, Engage's cast doesn't sound very impressive.

Alfred's voice especially was one big "ooph" when I heard it in the Heroes trailer.

Considering that the majority of male banner units are bad demotes, generally less impressive than the female units on the same banner even when 5-star, and far fewer in number, did they ever have a fair shot to compete against their female counterparts?

I'm not convinced that male characters not making them as much money isn't also due in part to IS continually fucking them over.

Yeah, basically a self-fulfulling prophecy. Make it so that males are generally the worst units on their banners, and then say "oh they're not making money. more females then".

Kind of like how, of all the male OC's, they gave Otr, who is easily the least likable male original character, his own banner over Freyr or Fafnir who would definitely rank higher.

Not surprised, but a little disappointed that they didn't do all of the older nobles + Alear as a banner. Still, this makes the most sense. You've got to sell the other banners somehow, and Firene is the first country encountered, according to the information we've been given.

Not sure if I'll Spark on this banner or the New Year's one for Duo Askr/Embla.

Unlike Byleth and the house Lord's, Alear and the older nobles don't cover enough weapon types for a banner of all colors.

The lineup seems pretty random, is M!Alear a tie-in bonus or was he just left out?

Also the GHB is Lumera, another unconventional choice.

I'm going to guess they're going in country order. It's basically Alear plus the major Firene characters.
