  1. A few tweaks here and there, bear with me. So I was still kicking around the "translation" and just started plugging things into google translate Latin > English. I was surprised by my results .. they were in context of the final battle of the game, dead on. I just had to share this before I let this go. I don't know if this is proper Latin at all. But at least, broken-wise this translation makes sense. Just like "Robin", I didn't want to give up at the end. Can ya blame me? :-p Revised "original song" and "translation". Validity not at all promised -- thank you google for janky translation :-p ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Robin's group sings of their feelings for Robin] Se vi a vi o vivi a sad, "A strong force wills you from living," et vis iam vis insignis fortis soli sat! "And your will is already a signifcant force that is strong enough alone!" Te me mor in veniam indicas quan ito vis a! "From wherever you are, tell me how much you want to come back from the dead!" [Repeats first verse.] Se vi a vi o vivi a sad, "A strong force wills you from living," et vis iam vis insignis fortis soli sat! "And your will is already a signifcant force that is strong enough alone!" Te me mor in veniam indicas quan ito vis a! "From wherever you are, tell me how much you want to come back from the dead!" [Grima's avatar sings a reply.] O, vires tan gunt va! Mi peta in meto! Va! Mi volans va fio mi de scen vi et homida! "Oh, so they understand the value of strength! I harvest my claims! Aha! My flight is going to become my scene of violence and murder!" [Robin's group's ladies sing against Grima's avatar, while the avatar continues to sing.] (A battle of wills is displayed in the song with this simulataneous technique. "Indeed, he wants to reap the true reality." Think of what Grima's goal is. "By his will to live, they are ready to roll," refers to Grima's army of undead. ) A ve rem a vult is oc meto! A vi a vi, tomui para to sint! "Indeed, he wants to reap the true reality! By his will to live, they are ready to roll!" O, vires tan gunt va! Mi peta in meto! Va! Mi volans va fio mi de scen vi et homida! "Oh, so they understand the value of strength! I harvest my claims! Aha! My flight is going to become my scene of violence and murder!" [Repeats ladies vs Grima.] A ve rem a vult is oc meto! Aha! My flight is going to become my scene of violence and murder!" [Robin's group sings the song's crescendo.] A ve rem a vult is oc meto! A vi a vi, para to sint! "Indeed, he wants to reap the true reality! By his will to live, they are ready!" [Robin's group closes the song with introspect.] (This can be one of three things based on my hearing: "vi so sad.... :: a force so strong..." || "vi so sat... :: the force is enough..." || or "viso sang... :: "having seen the cycle..." I chose viso sang, as Robin has seen the cycle of the future/past events, and can plan accordingly in this battle.) Viso sang... "Having seen the cycle..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's less choppy, Shadow of Chaos. It's more sensable, Alfred, but not great I know. The one and only major hitch I can see is that at the end Grima's ramble, we have something that clearly sounds like "va mi volans va fio mi de scen vi et omi pa/ha." Now, this is problematic. "Vi et omina", great -- force/will/life/violence/power and the ominous/omens. "Omi" is the word for "my lord", which the avatar could use to speak to Grima directly. Then we get into what to do with the "et" preceding this. "Pax" is peace, but there is no hang on the word. It's "pa" or "ha", and not so likely "na". So translated roughly then, "Behold! My flying is going to become my scene of violence/power and my lord, ha!" Eto could mean "plotting". "My flying is going to become the scene of my violence, my plotting, ha!" But that seems to lose something on the effect of violence, ominous. Think I have it cracked. I have listened to it after I got an idea this morning, and it can match for "homida" which translates directly to "murderer." I will see if I can play with the words a bit, but I think that along the word theory I was working with, "vi et homida :: violence and murder" makes perfect sense. Song altererd to reflect update.
  2. Yeh I'm in agreement with shadowofchaos. It's beating a dead horse at this point. Thank you Alfred so much for stepping in and taking the reins, your expertise has at least shown me that this is very flawed Latin translation at best, and thus even harder to translate than I originally thought. Six years in Latin studies is impressive! I had a few years of French and Spanish, and when I realized the song was neither, I was intrigued to see if I could come up with something. I may spend some time again with it when I get bored, as one of my side projects. But there's no point in trying to change the video without knowing exactly what is being said. I agree with shadowofchaos in this: I have waited a very long time to know what those lyrics say. It is disappointing that when I wrote to Nintendo customer service regarding the original lyrics and translation, they ignored it and gave a generic reply. I figured it was a matter of time until the grammar police caught up with me. I can't afford a third strike on my grammar record :-p Thanks again for talking with me about this song. We know at least that it is one of the more epic songs in video game history. God/Jesus bless in your endeavors, Mark
  3. A rather major catch as i was looking through various words in the song. insignis is definitely a word for emblem. i've been trying to throw every word around it into a word for fire now. it sounds like et visi a vis insignis fortis soli sat. tried fitting 'facis' right before ignis but it just doesn't sound right. well, as i read the one reply, it sounds like latin is impossible to translate via dictionary sites because of the rules of grammar. i'll keep kicking ideas around.
  4. Currently experimenting with the verb fio [be prepared/done] in the men's chorus. 'Fit' is something I can see the men's chorus possibly saying instead of "vi", if the 't' is silent or less pronounced at the end of the verb.... Anyone know if this is a common attribute between Latin and French (silent 't' or 'ent' at end of verb)? Also viet o mi ha.... vieto - i forbid, from vietā́re. nice possibility, but where does the 'mi' fit in? I remember a friend that had Latin in high school said that a verb at the end of a sentence may modify the entire thought before it. In the case of the word 'ha', it could be that the entire thoughts before them are an entreaty or a plea. Thus, one could put "I plea" at the beginning of the lyrics for the male chorus. "o mi dēsérere vieto mi ha".......... dēsérere - to give up, forskae, abandon, withdraw support. "I forbid giving up." "O vir et ...." O hero and something....tangunt doesn't make as much since here if we go this route. O hero and company? Will continue editing this as I come up with ideas. maybe I will succeed in cracking a longer bit of translation for the male chorus yet. Help appreciated!
  5. Ok, so we are looking at a massive amount of interjections in the female and male chorus of this song. I hoped to find a hidden meaning and extend the lyrics, but all past attempts failed. I am not a Latin major after all :-) The closest I got was that "averem vul is oc" lumped together does mean "so they want to settle the score..." But what I am running into is interjection heaven. And other words don't seem to play nicely with interjections or allow a fluid sentence structure. It is probable that I have "misheard" some of the lyrics as well. Anyone that wants to help with this, jump onboard! I am by all means not offended if you correct me. I will post what I have questions on below, and ask that you put your ears and minds to coming up with something better. "O virent, tangunt! Va mi! Metant! En! Meto! Va! Mi volans! Va! Vi! O mi desen! Viet! O mi ha!" "Oh they flourish, they strike! My pain! Behold, measured and cut down! Surprise! My soaring! Joy! Power! Oh, my! Fading away! He twists! Oh my distress!" Now I can see that it is in the middle of battle, and there is a possiblity that they are painting a scene of the 'back and forth' of battle using interjections. That is my current theory. Latin tranlastion sites: Latin Definitions for: (Latin Search) - Latin Dictionary and Grammar Resources - Latdict https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/latin http://www.allverbs.com/language.php?id=9 google translate By the sound of the music, the following phrases are paired in the song: o virent tangunt o - oh virent - they flourish, vigorous tangunt - they strike, strike va mi (possibly va vi) va - (exclamation of pain/dismay, of contempt/anger, of surprise/joy, ha, oh, ah) mi - my, mine metant en (in) meto metant - they reap (cut down in battle) en - behold! in - in midst of meto - i reap (cut down in battle) so an alternate meaning of the phrase might be roughly, i cut down [among, in the midst] of their cutting down, or i reap in the midst of their reaping va mi volans va - (exclamation of pain/dismay, of contempt/anger, of surprise/joy, ha, oh, ah) mi- my, mine volans - soaring [active, present tense] va vi va - (exclamation of pain/dismay, of contempt/anger, of surprise/joy, ha, oh, ah) vi - power/strength o mi desen viet o mi ha o - oh! mi - my, mine desen - fading away viet - he twists, weaves (I think they were aiming at "dodges" here) o - oh! mi - my, mine ha - (distress/regret/pity, appeal/entreaty, surprise/joy, objection/contempt, ah)
