I don't have any particular target, so I think I'll just take the top unit in each circle and see what that gives me. 5* Bridal!Lyn: A new unit to start things off! +Def/-Atk is bad, but she's not exactly up to date anyway. 5* Bridal!Charlotte: Another new bride! +HP/-Spd isn't great again. 5* Picnic!Felicia: Not new, but she's nice anyway. Now to use the first weekly Arena Reward 3 ticket. 5* Karla: Eh. +Atk/-Spd is nice, but I already have a +2 +Atk copy. Merge time.

First, blue for Ascended Idunn's Revival. 3* Tatiana: No. Now to see if 254 orbs is enough to get me Ayra and Mercedes. Starting with one full circle for the fun of it... That went reasonably well in the end, unlike the usual total disasters that happen whenever I try to pull from seasonal banners. 228 orbs and 52 pulls got me 2 copies of Harmonic!Ayra and a merge for Fallen!Femui. That's still below average, but it's nicely concentrated on the Harmonic that I actually care about.

Blue for Byleth with the Hero Fest tickets. 4* Merlinus: Reposition fodder. 3* Shanna: Desperation fodder. 3* Altena: No. 4* Sothe: No. 4* Phila: No. 4* Silas: Reposition fodder. I feel like I never have good luck with Hero Fests. Now for the Weekly Arena ticket. 5* Tibarn: Not bad. +Res/-Spd is awful, but I've got a +4 +Atk copy to merge into anyway.

Scale of the story: Not only do you go all across the continent, you fight enemies from all nations along the way. Despite Bern being the primary threat you spend most of the campaign fighting their collaborators from other lands, with only occasional flights of wyvern riders as a reminder of their power until you enter Bern itself in a gargantuan battle Scale of the maps: While dragging Roy all the way to the seize point is undoubtedly annoying, having these vast spaces to wage war upon does tend to give me a sense of grandness as my units move forward Route splits: While I do have my preferred choices, the way FE6 implements two of them without massively changing how events ultimately play out is a very nice way to provide variety to the story. Making them dependent on hidden prior choices isn't great from a gameplay standpoint, but I can see how it would encourage replaying and discussing with friends Good ol' GBA art style: Even to this day I'm fond of the sprites and animations Bows are useful: With generally tougher enemies and Bern's wyverns popping up all over the place, there's a genuinely good niche for them. Wolt and Dorothy still manage to be bad anyway, but the nomads and snipers are all fun to use -

Blue for the Lull banner. 3* Nino: No. Lastly, two circles from Freyr's banner to see if I get lucky. 190 orbs isn't enough for me to splurge too much. I picked up a merge for Eitri, which is good enough for two circles. I'm not stretching my luck any further than that, so time for the weekly Arena ticket. 5* Leo: Whatever. Full neutral isn't as good as my current +1 +Atk copy, so merge time.

So many summer banners...Grey for the Null Follow-Up banner. 3* Seliph: No. Grey again for Summer Returns. 4* Balthus: No. Blue for Summer's Arrival. 3* Effie: No. Green for the TT banner. 3* Silvia: No. Blue for Ylissean Summer. 3* Soren: No. The game really doesn't want to give me what I want. Red for Weekly Revival 29. 4* Scathach: No. Blue for Weekly Revival 63. 4* Tanith: No. Red for Summer Firsts since Fjorm's the only one I'm interested in. 4* Marth: No. That's disappointing. Now to try to kill my 10.5% pity rate on L!Guinivere's banner with 92 orbs. That went acceptably well. A total of 9 circles got me Alear, two copies of Hel, and a 4* Special copy of Loki. Now to see what the weekly Arena ticket gives me. 5* YT!Olivia: Are you kidding me? This is the second time in a row and I think the third time overall I've pulled her from the weekly ticket. +HP/-Spd is even exactly the same as last week. She's up to +6 now through zero intention of mine.

Is pre- and post-Awakening a meaningful/useful distinction?

I think this just about sums up my own thoughts on the topic, although I'd also make a distinction between the gameplay and story aspects. In the former case many of the features Awakening is well known for were already present in Tellius or the Archanea remakes, only now they were all put together in one game. As for the latter case I think Awakening represented much more obvious of a shift, with Robin getting far more plot importance than Kris and infinitely more than Mark, supports being vastly expanded in quantity, and the sim elements not just increasing in variety but also more heavily affecting gameplay (children, meals, etc). 100% agreed. I haven't played any FE game past Fates, partially because I don't have a Switch but largely because whenever I read about all of the things to do outside of maps or preparation for them my eyes tend to glaze over from boredom. I'm not opposed to optimizing, but ultimately I'm playing FE to command my army in battle, not cook a meal so the right stat gets boosted or micromanage classes to get the best skills. -

Green for Summer Passing. 3* Reyson: No. Blue for the BHB banner. 5* Sain: The dashing knight rides to the rescue! +Def/-Spd is tolerable enough. This day is going well. Grey for Weekly Revival 28. 3* Dwyer: No. Blue for Weekly Revival 62. 4* Jagen: No. Green for Ascendant!Eir's banner. 5* Ascendant!Eir: Excellent! +Atk/-Def is just about perfect as well. Now grey to see if I can snag Rearmed!Robin. 5* Fallen!Tiki: Not quite right, but a decent 4* Special anyway. +Spd/-Res is a good master copy, but my current copy is already +Spd/-Def. Alright, I'm getting desperate with this damned Double Special banner. If 69 orbs can't break my 9.5% pity rate, then I give up. Finally something. In the end all I got from 8 entire circles was one copy of Spring!Triandra, a 4* copy of Khadein!Byleth, and a 4* Special copy of Kilff, which is atrocious return on investment. Still, at least it wasn't a complete waste. Now on to the other banners. Grey for Weekly Revival 61. 3* M!Morgan: No. Red for Weekly Revival 27. 4* M!Morgan: Really? Green for Summer Vacation. 3* Cath: Reposition fodder. Blue for the Iceberg banner. 3* Eliwood: No. There are three other red orbs in this circle, which is just too tempting even if I only have 49 orbs left. 3* Scathach: No. 3* Henry: No. 4* A!Tiki: No. That was a disappointment. And because the Hall of Forms banner has some nice units, I'll take any non-reds from the first circle. 37 orbs left. 5* Selena: Hey, nice. +Atk/-Res is an excellent base copy, so time to merge my +1 +HP copy. 5* Fallen!Femui: An okay 4* Special. +Res/-Spd is poor, so merge fodder for my +1 +Def copy. 3* Jeorge: No. Still no focus unit, but I guess Feh decided to take pity on me after the Double Special banner and give me a present. Red for Weekly Revival 60. 3* Seth: No. Red for the TT banner. 4* Tharja: No. And now to keep trying to kill my 8% pity rate on the Double Special banner. 63 orbs on hand. This is completely unbelievable. 7 full circles so far have gotten me one 4* copy of Khadein!Byleth and a 4* Special Kliff. Not a single 5* focus unit at all. Anyway, now to see if I can snag L'Arachel from the freebie on Summer Longing. 4* Summer!L'Arachel: Good. At least something I hoped for actually happened. +Atk/-Res is quite good too.

Blue for the Reposition banner. 5* Ninian: A bad 4* Special is still better than the nothing I've been getting recently. +Def/-HP is rubbish, so merge fodder for my +2 +Atk copy. Red for the Rally banner. 3* Eirika: No. And for fun, I might as well pull from the Double Special banner. Only 59 orbs on hand, but there's a lot of good units here. I really get the feeling Heroes doesn't want me to play it anymore. Three full circles didn't get me anything but a 4* copy of Khadein!Byleth, which is like the absolute minimum required to prove that focus units do actually exist and I can pull them.

I forgot this banner was coming, and now that it's here...I could take it or leave it. I'm a big fan of Fir, so I'm happy to see her get an Ascended, but I still would have rather seen FE6!Karel as functionally a canon and playable Ascended. Noah and Murdock are nice and it's good to see Saul and Dorothy, but I'm not really excited for them. I suppose I'll just snipe red with the tickets and hope I get lucky. On a side note, I do not like Saul's art at all. His features look too sharp compared to in FE6, which make him come off as somewhat unsettling.

A little off from my usual schedule, but I need to kill my 4.5% pity rate on Bridal Grace. 112 orbs on hand thanks to Chain Challenges. That took way longer than it had any right to. 284 orbs and 67 pulls got me one measly copy of Bridal!Shanna, plus merges for Galzus, Nyx, and Mamori. Anyway, might as well do the rest of the free pulls available right now. Blue for Bridal Belonging. 3* Est: No. Blue again for the BHB banner. 4* Tatiana: No. Red for L!Hinoka's banner. 3* Ogma: Figures. Yeah, my lucky streak is well and truly murdered now. Let's see what the weekly Arena ticket gives me. 5* Sigurd: He finally shows up after many years. +Atk/-Spd is bad, but it's not like he's any good anymore anyway.

And now to see if I can pick up Tiki&Tiki from Bridal Dreams. 217 orbs and a full circle to start. That went solidly well. 27 pulls and 116 orbs got me a copy of Tiki&Tiki as well as a bonus Astrid. I doubt I'll come back to this banner, so I'll leave things there. Now for the weekly Arena ticket as always. 5* Alm: I guess. +Res/-Atk is awful, so merge fodder for my +4 +Atk copy. He's really getting up there among my most-merged units.

On the one hand I'm not at all excited by Tiki and Tiki, but on the other hand this means there's now actually a nonzero chance of IS giving us a Duo Hero of Morgan and Morgan. I figured the issue of having two characters with the same name would mean they wouldn't bother, but if they are willing to go that route... As for the rest of the banner, a huge "Meh" from me. I've stopped caring about whatever mishmash of bonuses weapons and skills give nowadays, and none of the characters here particularly appeal to me. Anna is marginally tempting, but I need to focus my orbs on Tiki and Tiki.

Not as many banners this week. I'll start with the Ascendant & Rearmed banner. One circle for fun, since with only 78 orbs on hand I can't afford to invest too much here. 4* Knoll: No. 3* Ares: No. 4* Lukas: No. 4* Titania: No. 4* Lex: Reposition fodder. Well, that's disappointing. Maybe I'll come back next week. Blue on A Season for Picnics since Lukas is the only unit I'm missing. 3* Colm: No. Green on Weekly Revival 20. 4* Bartre: No. Red on Weekly Revival 71. 5* Fallen!Mamui: Alright! I would have preferred Fallen!Julia, but this is fine as well. +Def/-Res, so merge fodder for my +1 +Def copy. An entirely blue circle and I pick a 5*. I guess my lucky streak isn't quite over yet. Red for the weekly Arena ticket. 5* Ryoma: Exactly who I was looking for! I finally have all of the Heroes launch units! +Spd/-Def is actually really good. Another good week of pulls, although the Hero Fest could have gone better.
