Yeah as Ageha mentioned it can mean anything from business partner, friend, etc. but given the context of it being part of the S-rank support, the mention of how "it can only be you", coupled with dialogue that sounds like something you'd confess to someone you like, them giving them a ring, it leaves very little in the way for interpretation for the advancement of a platonic relationship. It's similar to how little ambiguity there is for Hortensia's support when the rhetoric used has implied romantic advances with Hortensia (a 14 year old) saying she loves Alear.
  2. By now i'm sure a lot of people have seen the translated text of Anna's S-rank support for Fire Emblem Engage. In contract to the amount of attention that particular support conversation has received, I've seen comparatively less discussion and controversy pertaining to the other "way too young to be on the battlefield seriously where are your parents?!" kid in the 10-year-old Jean. As such, i'm wondering if there's been any sort of fan translation of the S-rank support and what the contents of the conversation contain because if it's anything like the one they gave to Mini Me Anna, then I am shocked to see it not be a part of that discourse. I'm currently trying to do research on it and the support for Anna to script a video on Fire Emblem's history when it comes to localization/the controversies that have arisen as a result of changes (The lost dialogue and watering down of certain character's sexuality in Radiant Dawn as a result of the stereotypes applied to said characters in the original, Fates' handling of Soleil vs the original text, etc.), namely when there's some contentious content to the localized release (and of that, drilling down on the North American releases - I am significantly less informed/have far less access to releases compared to the various PAL region releases and any localization changes made for a given language).

  4. Fire Emblem typically gets a new character artist after two entries so I don't expect Kozaki to come back. What I do worry about is whether they keep Kusakihara in a directing position, be it art or the overall game, especially given the changes made to Celica in Shadows of Valentia.

Sorry, I forgot to edit that out, Azura is constantly talking about her previous relationship with her mother with very few moments that showcase it during Revelation (this is why writing with fours of sleep is a bad idea). Edited to correct that mistake. ??? Revelation isn't some avant garde masterwork that breaks the mould of traditional video game storytelling nor is that why people dislike it. They dislike it because it exemplifies the very worst of Fates' many problems with its poorly written villains, its overreliance on killing off characters for the sake of raising a body count and a lopsided first act that takes a while to pick up given how repetitive the dialogue can be.

Oh hey, I just so happen to have a review explaining my problems with what I consider to be the weakest path of the three: Some additional points: -The relationship between Azura and her mother was far too reliant on telling as opposed to showing us about their relationship, which hurts the emotional impact of this subplot's conclusion. -There is no reason to include Master Seals at this point in the series beyond the ability to change classes early on. It made sense in Awakening to have them when swapping between 1st and 2nd classes was possible but Fates lacks this feature entirely. Go back to Path of Radiance's "Level Up 1 past 21" method and drop them from being a requirement in the future. -The ice map doesn't work in the same way Fog of War does because of how they attempt to create anticipation in the player. In an FoW map, said anticipation comes from the enemy's movements being uncertain and constantly changing, meaning that while they are a threat. At least on the first try, finding an enemy or even walking right into one is a surprise that constantly changes up how one should approach the map (after all, who knows how may more enemies are waiting in the shadows?). Couple this with, say, a defense mission a la Rekka no Ken and you can make some incredible maps out of them. In Revelation, the anticipation stems from finding out which tile has an enemy hiding in it. Since enemie sare stationary until they're uncovered, this makes the map more of a guessing game that can be taken at a more leisurely pace. The problems it has are many: The characters are (likely to be) so overlevelled by this point in the game that any surprise they may have incited is removed when you realize where an enemy is located, it's relatively easy to pick them off one by one because they're not posing an active threat like they would be during a FoW encounter and the low deployment numbers make for one tedious map to tackle.

  9. Setting aside the disaster that is the Japanese version and my extended thoughts for a future video on Fates' localization...i'm not a fan. She's not as bad as Heather since at least Soleil has more layers besides "I like women" and the localized effort is an improvement but she's still portrayed as fairly one-note and one of the worst portrayals of a gay character in video games. Also...I know people have beaten this horse (and rightfully so) with the Japanese version of M!Kamui & Soleil, but Soleil's support with M!Corrin still has problems, the main one being that the subtext of conversion therapy in the original is no longer therapy: It's text. It's explicitly an exercise with which to address what she considers to be a problem. Utterly rubbish video. Ironically, it misinforms its own viewers in spite of its title.

  11. While editing through my review of Conquest, an idea hit me. Since there wasn't much to be said about Takumi's descent into in the review itself aside from how it's yet another one of the many contrived conveniences featured throughout Conquest, I thought this would be a fun little way of showcasing this ridiculous change in character and the terrible ending to the game with how similar it is to Anakin's fall to the dark side in the prequels. Enjoy!

I find it difficult for you to quantify people who rightfully spoke out about this support conversation as being in the minority since, from what I heard, it's universally reviled by the LGBTQ community in Japan, let alone with some of the examples you listed as "the minorities ruining video games because they're being pandered to" or presuming that the masses would approve of a conversation where a gay woman is drugged without any consent (and could have killed her since Kamui did not know that she could have had a severe allergic reaction to what can best be described as a drug which he put in her drink) and somehow falls in love with him despite her clearly being interested in women. What you're suggesting is that, as an example, Game Freak should have kept Jynx's original color scheme in spite of it resembling blackface because that would somehow destroy Pokémon's "artistic integrity" even if it is, by all accounts, a racist caricature that black people would find offensive (and did), many of whom I imagine play the games. Including something that would be hurtful to a group of people would make the game better, regardless of whether they're considered a minority or not. That aside, changes like these are not a new phenomenon for the series in any way, shape or form. Historically, Fire Emblem has always changed certain characters' personalities or lines of dialogue within the story during the localization process, most of which have been for the betterment of the story and characters (on the subject of changes, one can even see during the E3 trailer that they changed the singer for one of the songs which was long before we knew about this). Soleil's support conversations with M!Kamui/Corrin was a disgusting display that could be compared to gay conversion, to say nothing of the equally gross reporting by many websites about this character (she's bisexual! It's just a fantasy game! And so on and so forth) and the way the game treats her like a joke, so having it altered for the localized version is a marked improvement over the source material. On a lighter and slightly unrelated note, I would hope (and this is just a hope since I don't know how technically feasible this would be) that Soleil does get a same-sex support in the localized version, be it with F!Kamui/Corrin, not Tharja or whoever they choose as an option. At the very least, I hope that we don't get another Heather i.e. a strawman depiction of a lesbian. How could anyone resist picking up a new Fire Emblem game with a genius commercial like this? "Trust no o-" Don't trust this commercial, more like! I really hate this one, it's one of the worst commercials to a video game ever. But yes, advertising and creating a new beginner-friendly mode were just a couple of reasons why Awakening did so well. That it happened to be one of the best entries in the series since Path of Radiance doesn't hurt either.

Doesn't look like this was posted here yet: http://serenesforest.net/2015/12/09/the-making-of-fire-emblem-64/ Apparently The Making of Fire Emblem states that Fuuin No Tsurugi does carry over some concepts from the elusive Fire Emblem 64, the key word being some. Aside from Roy aka. "Ike", a couple of names like Idoun and the character Karel did make the transfer over from the Nintendo 64 to the GameBoy Advance, but a large portion of Fuuin No Tsurugi had to start over from scratch. This isn't too surprising since Fire Emblem tends to recycle unused elements from older games all the time, be they ideas (i.e. Kaga wanted to show Camus' leadership but couldn't due to technological limits on the Famicom eventually leading to the Leadership mechanic in Seisen No Keifu) or character names (i.e. Ike being used in Path of Radiance). The post also includes pictures of several characters such as "Ike" and Idoun, both of whom look noticeably different from the final version.
