  1. Shadow Dragon had issues with characters who were palette swaps of one another, so giving the artist free reign here is nothing but a good thing
  2. I miss when Nintendo's advertising strategy was essentially making a mini movie, with costumed characters and full choirs singing professionally composed versions of the OST
  3. Maybe the best way to phrase it would be "incongruous" Fire Emblem started with a Record of a Lodoss War art style, and it's pretty much stuck to it through it's run. That means that costumes aren't necessarily realistic, but they hue closer to reality then Final Fantasy or Shining Force on average. Knights wear platemail, sword fighters are in tunics, mages wear cloaks and robes, et cetera. If it weren't for the bright colors, it'd be fairly drab. Awakening and Fates decided to jazz that up. Practicality was given a backseat to looking cool. Female Knights with boobplate and pauldrons, swordfighters in overtly complicated outfits that would be hard to slip into, Tharja. There's a lot appealing about the art, but it does come off overdesigned in comparison to all previous installments, even the Radiant Dawn era of swag promotion outfits. Compare: Hidari's art is a return to form from the overdesigned Awakening art. Simple outfits that add a naturalistic aesthetic as opposed to the more avant gard outfits of Awakening and Fates, which look like they stepped off of a runway in Milan rather then a battlefield.
  4. It's a decent RPG in the vein of Atlus's other RPGs, specifically persona storywise and DDS gameplay-wise
  5. It did... but they were accessible from the World Map. The shrine guarded by the Zombie dragon, for one, was optional and difficult for when it is available.
  6. Honestly, it lead to my buddies to conclude that they were the real villains. They live in paradise while Nohr rots in a frozen bog.
  7. Zeke's blonde though, considering he's a CHAR
  8. My very biggest fear is that they will be lazy with the map design. FE Gaidan, in exchange for all the interesting things it did with Fire Emblem, had baby's first tactics game map design. It had large maps of empty space. Hopefully, the developers used the old maps as a reference instead of an excuse to copypasta.
  9. As long as this is closer to New Mystery of the Emblem then Shadow Dragon, I can dig. Support as a mechanic has become so embeded in the franchise that a game without it would feel empty.
  10. Considering it was one of the biggest flops in the history of Atlus and IS....
  11. Playable soldiers. Knights as the sole unmounted Lance units continue to be the bane of my existence because they take forever to get into position and then get wrecked by magic
  12. Really, Kris was the best version of the concept, barring one thing: being the best character on the field. The tactician should be more about Rallying then fighting.
  13. I agree, Radiant Historia is a hidden gem of the Atlus library. Muramasa: The Demon Blade is a game I've beaten several times. It's just so slick, and the art is orgasmic Vanillaware fair. I'm so sad that I don't have a PS Vita to pick up the enhanced port with all the sidestories. And the Shin Megami Tensei franchise is one I get weird looks for talking about in real life, unless I'm talking about Persona. It's a real shame, actually, how the original series has been fading steadily since the spin off gained popularity.
  14. Did someone call my name? And Lara Croft's original creator was horrified by her usage as sex icon by media. In her original game, she was supposed to embody a combination of 90s riot girl feminism and a touch of austerity, best exemplified by the iconic sequence where she blows away a baddie with a shotgun and silk bathrobe. But the media hijacked her and used her in an endless parade of sleazy advertisements which whittled away at the core of her character. And considering the franchise itself has decided to move away from the short shorts in favor of cargo pants, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to claim. Kicking ass and being treated like a sex object are not mutually exclusive. If it were, Barbed Wire would be a very different movie. But hey, whatever. deltanine's trying to pick a fight. Back to the topic, I'd nominate Princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon, aka the Lion Cub of Citra, aka Ciri. For people have read the books, it's really no understatement that she is the true protagonist of the story, with Geralt as the viewpoint character and her mentor. In the games, she's still a very important character, although being on the run from the Wild Hunt made her unavailable to appear until the third game. However, her arc has her deciding whether to continue on the path of a Witcher or to embrace her heritage and become Empress.
  15. General Consensus with FFT is that the political stuff is the best part of the game, but Square got cold feet and shoved in the Lucavi plot at the tale end, which kinda makes the game feel like Game of Thrones with a Final Fantasy title ending. "And then demons were responsible for everything bad" kinda goes against the thrust of the plot which has perfectly ordinary people perfectly willing to be dicks to one another for petty reasons.
  16. It's not a clear Good< >Bad line in comparison, but a massive multipronged graph. Fire Emblem has fairly typical swords-and-sorcery fair for it's stories, but it makes up for it with rich character building. Tactics tend to be political tales like ASoIaF or The Stormlight Archive, where the heroes and villains are lost in the shuffle of history. Unfortunately, this means that it's characters tend to be fairly flat in order to leave the reasons behind their actions more ambiguous. Or, to put it another way, Fire Emblem is a high fantasy tale from the perspective of a squad of "elites" gathered around the chosen one. Tactics are low fantasy games where the leads are but cogs in the massive machine of war.
  17. Gameplay looks as rough and tough as ever
  18. My list of characters that probably should have been in the game. This is nitpicky as hell, so prepare yourself
  19. Shin Megami Tensei IV is probably the best of the Atlus games battle system wise. The battles are fast and strategic, fusion feels good to do, the conversation system gives you all sorts of options, and barring a few of the designs the monsters all are classic yet distinct. Pity nowhere near as much love is given to the map design, which was created for people who live in Tokyo, or story, which is a bit of a mess. Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky has a pretty distinct turn based system combined with a FF7 style "not-materia" system which makes the game really fun to customize and play. Radiant Historia is just as good as you've heard battle wise. Setting up combos and muttering Hannibal Smith quotes when the plan comes together feels so satisfying. The Mario and Luigi series has such a good flow to play.
