  1. The two Owain cards shown off on Twitter earlier are now translated. These cards are some of the most well written in Cipher in my opinion, lots of references that capture the essence of Owain's character. Swordmaster Owain is particularly terrifying with his devastating attack and the skills that increase his destructive power even further. Also complete is the request for the Cost 2 Lucina that can be found in the Awakening Starter Deck. Haven't found a good picture for her yet.

As always, please don't hesitate to let me know if anything needs to be edited/changed. I really do appreciate it!

In the meantime, I think we should emphasize user-friendliness with these translations to make it as easy as possible to get people into the game. Looking at English text and seeing a series of symbols isn't going to help intuitively describe what a skill does to a new player. That's part of the value of kanji too, that you can look at them and instantly get an idea of how the skill behaves. So maybe try this convention:

    起 = Activate

    常 = Continuous

    自 = Automatic

    攻 = Support

    特 = Special

And then color code it on the English wiki and in other spaces, so that people learn to associate Activate with red, Continuous with green, Special with purple, and so on. What does everyone think of this idea? I want to support the game as much as possible, and I think part of that is making it easy to get into.

I completely agree about emphasizing user-friendliness. You've given me a lot to think about in terms of how to best handle the translation for Cipher. I definitely need to go back through and overhaul the system at some point.

I think each of the correlative words you have for those Kanji work well, except "起 = activate" (that and I'm pretty sure you meant 支 instead of 攻 for "support"). Indeed, 起 has been the most difficult Kanji to find a succinct idea-translation for. I don't think 'activate' conveys quite enough context, since these skills must be declared and paid for only during the "movement phase". It's close and perhaps is the best fit coming from other TCG nomenclature; I just wish there was also a way to convey that these skills must be done before the attack phase. I feel like "起 = Action" would work better, since it would give these skills a separate distinction from movement and attacking, and would retain the ACT abbreviation. If I were to go with this term, I'd have to revise many of the skills that refer to tapping as "taking an action" in order to avoid confusion. It might work better on the whole and benefit the translation project in the long run though!

I have a scanner and can scan whatever I get out of B01 and the starter decks. Maybe we should divide up the work, since there's quite a few of us ordering cards?

A correction on Gaius, we currently have him destroying the card that he reveals, but the card actually reads something like this:

    暗殺 起 [行動する] 相手のデッキの1番上のカードを公開させる。そのカードの出撃コストが3以上の場合、あなたは[リバース2]してもよい。そうしたなら、敵を1体選び、撃破する。

Assassinate: Activate: [Tap this unit] Reveal 1 card from the top of your opponent's deck. If that card has a deployment cost of 3 or greater, you may [Reverse 2]. If you do, choose 1 enemy, destroy it by battle.

("Reverse" is a term that comes from the Japanese wiki, it seems to be the term for flipping a bond. I'm not sure if it's official or not, but in my experience Japanese wiki writers are very fastidious about their terminology so it probably is.)

Basically Gaius specifies destroying an enemy, and doesn't actually do anything to the revealed card, which makes sense given that it's an assassinate skill. This also means that if you use Assassinate and his CSS goes off, it's a net -1 to the opponent and +1 to yourself. And cost 3 units only have an average support value of 10~20, so you'll know what's coming up during the next attack you make...I'm curious if you can use Assassinate on their lord to instantly break an orb.

Ah, many thanks for that spot. I definitely goofed up on the translation for that card. I'll have to fix that!

I also noticed the "Reverse" terminology. It's definitely something that is agreed upon among the already installed Cipher fanbase in Japan. I'm not sure how a true localization team would handle it, but it seemed like most people here were more familiar with the 'Flip' terminology and it conveys the idea well enough.

As audiotronica noted, Gaius should be able to use Assassinate on a Lord card due to the "destroyed as a result of battle" terminology.

  2. Here are the remainder of the tweets that came out over the night. Kawade talks about a Cipher event going on today in Japan and there are two card intros for Owain cards that make many references to Owain's colorful character.

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/611763915798622208

"[Kawade] Just one more week til Cipher releases! We are holding another Cipher Experience event in the 5th floor event space room of the Osaka Nipponbashi branch animate store. The event will run until 7pm tonight, so come on out when you get the time! #FEcipher"

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/611775853479923712

"[Card Introduction] This is Owain who is, as a matter of fact, a royal descendent. Because of this, he also has the ability to destroy 2 orbs like all other royal heros, though it's in a more limited capacity. You might also take notice of his quote as well. "[Card Introduction] This is the promoted version of the previous Owain card we showed. Despite still having a restriction on his 2x orb destruction skill, pairing it with his other skill that lets him double his attack power makes the skills this card has quite powerful indeed. He probably has the right Mystletainn this time. (Illustrator: Rika Suzuki) #FEcipher"

  3. Boo-yah Touya, welcome! Glad to have you here.

Here's the translation for the Sumia card from today's tweet. Her CCS skill is pretty interesting in that it directly affects the support character's attack power, this might change strategies up a bit. It's becoming more and more viable to build a deck completely made out of Pegasus Knights and class-changed units thereafter.

Simply put, this means that as long as she is untapped, you can use this skill to move her free of charge, without having to tap her. (Reminder that normally when u move a unit it will be tapped)

However, if some other skill has caused her to be tapped, you cannot use this skill to move her anymore.

Yep, this is how I understand it as well. The other caveat the skill has is that it can only be used once per turn, which makes sense. In the case of Olivia, yes you could use her to "un-tap" Caeda and then you could use the Angelic Flight skill, provided you hadn't already used it already earlier that turn.

EDIT: Oh wow, thanks so much DifferentFight! That's a treasure trove of new material!

  4. The newest Cipher tweet is about a promoted Falcoknight Sumia card.

  5. We already saw a decent image of this Falcoknight Caeda card all the way back at the livestream event, and now we've got it on the official twitter.

Imo the Nono ability of returning bond card to your hand is mandatory. The card effect doesn't have "よい"

I am also pretty sure that Nono aka Nowi's bond return skill is mandatory, just for the reason Nanaka has here. My translation of the card will continue to reflect that until it is confirmed otherwise.

  7. Here's the translation for the Caeda card that just got posted on Twitter. Her skill seems pretty high cost for only a 10pt attack increase, but maybe it'll will come in handy in a pinch.

  9. No way that Nowi wasn't going to get a card, that'd be a big no-no. Here's the freshly announced Nowi card's full translation.

    B01-078R%20Nowi.jpg

Nowi (Wellspring of Youth) – Rarity: Rare / Series 1 Booster Card #078

Quote: “I trust everyone to do their jobs, and me? I do my best in battle!”

Skill 1: “Young Manakete” / & / At the end of your turn, add one card from your Bond Area to your hand.

    Card ID: B01-078R

    Illustrator: Pisuke

The new Nono card just released is quite a strong beatstick but at the cost of 1 bond card a turn....

Effect: +30 when there is 6 or more cards in the Bond Area
Choose 1 card in your bond area and return it to your hand at the end of your Tur.

I think you aren't required to move the bond at the end of the turn. The verb uses the potential tense indicating it's up to the player if they want to or not. Never mind, it isn't the potential form of the verb, so it is a forced thing. However, this isn't as bad as we might think. This skill might let you return flipped bonds to your hand which would help get rid of used bonds and refresh your bond area.

. . .and I see the first "combo" for Ylisse. It's not Talys-tier, but it forces the opponent to either leave Gregor alone and give a promoted Chrom more power, or to kill him and help them ramp bonds.

    EDIT:

Does it have to be a face-up bond?

It hasn't been clarified, but if you take the Japanese on these skills literally then I would take it to mean all cards in the Bond Area, whether face up or face down. Not entirely sure about the official rule on that though.

  10. The new tweet details both of Nowi's skills alongside her new card design.

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/610642288973250560

"[Card Intro] This is the Manakete Nowi of the ancient dragon tribe. Her attack increases once there are 6 or more bonds in your Bond Area. She also has a skill that lets you move cards from your Bond Area to your hand. To use Nowi to her fullest potential, you'll need to use these skills at just the right times."

  11. In between the E3 conferences today I was able to get the Gregor card translated. His skill makes this quite a useful card, and I wonder if there will be a Hero Gregor card.

  13. Btw, the Gaius card you mentioned, is it this one? I can't find any other Gaius card in the spreadsheet, and this one doesn't have have 破壊 in it. http://s152.photobucket.com/user/Nindotendofreak/media/Cipher/Gaius%20Assassin%20B01-073SR.png.html

Whoops, I misread it back when I translated that card, hahah. I'm on the same page as you in terms of both terms being read as "destroy" in my mind when I see it, so I must of switched those around. Apologies for the confusion, but yeah it seems the distinction is still a fair one to make despite my erroneous Gaius example.

I don't think so. At this point, we know most of the cards for this first release and there's there's doesn't seem to have enough "space" for promoted/non promoted versions of all the characters we've seen so far. So for example, I don't think Camus, Frederic or Jeigan have non-promoted cards, and I don't think the three axe dudes have promoted cards for example.

So why would someone like Frederic have only a 3/2 promoted card if there's no base card? I can see two reasons. 1) The unit starts already promoted in his game so its not too jarring theme-wise. 2) They might add a non-promoted Frederick in a future expansion, which could promote into this already existing one.

... That's just my guess, of course.

I think this the best guess. I think they are just covering themselves in the future in case they want to make "original scenario" cards in later series for units like Minerva where they came into the game already pre-promoted.

  14. Only one tweet today since it's the weekend. Kawade talks about fans playing Cipher as their first TCG.

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/609539693777039361

"[Kawade] While reading stories of people's experiences at the Cipher demo events, I expected there would be many Fire Emblem fans. What I didn't expect was how many people gladly particpated in a TCG for the first time just because they are fans. ^^ #FEcipher"

That Camus card is badass. The BS Fire Emblem artist proves that she's the best once again.

I really do like the full art cards like this and Gaius, and I imagine the holo-foil will make them nice and shiny as well. This might be the single greatest thing that has happened to those that would want to collect Fire Emblem merch, what with almost all characters being represented and portrayed quite well by top-notch artists.

  15. I believe that the effect should simply be " are destroyed" instead of "destroyed as a result of battle".

As far as I can tell, that was put so as to prevent killing off the opponent's main character so easily if theirs happens to be cost 2 or lower. In other words, it would just break an orb this way. Also, one would figure that this would trigger effects like "when this unit is destroyed by battle", as well. Of course, this is assuming the translation is accurate, but it does make sense in my mind, is all.

Yep, this is one of the main reasons that I worded it that way. A discussion earlier in the thread came to the conclusions that we should err on the side of caution, especially with an unofficial translation, and make the wording as fool-proof as possible to avoid arguments in battle such as "should this ability instantly destroy the 1 cost Main Character or not".

The other main reason has to do from a translation standpoint. The cards already use a word for simply "destroy" which is 破壊. This is used in reference to orbs most of the time. However, when an ability talks about destroying units, most of the time it uses 撃破, which also means "destroy" literally, but it also holds the extra connotation of an attack or battle related incident that 破壊 does not. What solidifies my stance on this is the fact that Gaius' "Lethality" skill actually uses 破壊 instead of 撃破 when it talks about destroying a unit card that has not yet been placed on the battlefield. This means that there definitely is a distinction between these two terms, and so I make sure to make that known in my translations.

I do recognize that in an effort to cover all bases my translations are a bit too wordy at times. I appreciate all feedback, so if you have another way you think it would be worded while still preserving the difference between both "destroy" terms, then let me know!

  16. Today's Camus card has been translated. This card seems extremely overpowered but I imagine it will be really tough to come by enough bonds to play him, let alone to then make use of his skill that often. That being said, this is just one more example of a card that makes the Shadow Dragon deck that much more interesting to me than the Awakening deck.

  19. I didn't translate the quote cause there was 1 or 2 kanji too small for me to make out from the image. However the Japanese FE0 Wiki is updating frequently with full text including quotes!

    B01-015 Healing Priest, Wrys

    P01-007Healing Hero, Wrys

Two Cordelia cards are also listed on the JP Wiki, and they are different from this promo one.

    B01-075 Dark Flier, Cordelia

    B01-076 Pegasus Knight, Cordelia

Also, does anyone have a resource that has a list of English and Japanese names/terms? I'm only familiar with the Japanese names so I would call "Dark Flier Cordelia" as "Dark Pegasus Tiamo." It would help me out for translating if there is a fairly complete spreadsheet or something similar.

Oh man, that japanese wiki is an amazing resource! I'll need to update a few things in the Cipher Compendium, particularly adding in artist names and Card IDs I couldn't read before. Thanks for the share.

I've been using multiple resources for names/terms in my translation work on the cards:

    http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/Fire_Emblem:_Awakening/Translations

    http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_characters_in_Fire_Emblem:_Shadow_Dragon

    http://old.serenesforest.net/fe13/namechart_legacy.html

    http://old.serenesforest.net/fe13/namechart.html

    http://serenesforest.net/general/localisation-changes/

Hope that helps! Any help translating cards is very much appreciated. I've been keeping the Cipher Compendium up to date as best as I can while not at work, but I'm missing a few cards that I couldn't read from images that were available. That Japanese wiki should help remedy that too!

  20. Apologies for the double post, but I finished another card translation. I meant to have this done earlier today, but work got pretty busy. This is the Swordmaster Lon'qu card that debuted on the Twitter this morning. He's quite good actually and is a force to be reckoned with if you set him up right. With as many sword-wielding units as there are in this game, it shouldn't be hard to beef up his attack quite considerably, and then you just go to town with his unavoidable attacks, provided you had enough bonds.

  21. The twitter updated last night with card intros for both the Lon'qu that was leaked in the Famitsu scans and his promoted counterpart. There's also some talk about an upcoming livestream event.

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/608883440339943426

"[Card Introduction] Lon'qu is infamous for his hate of women, but is it really hate? Carrying over from the games, this card is stuck with a skill that makes it impossible for him to be supported by female units. Maybe this card would best be suited for a males-only deck? (Illustrator: Clover K) #FEcipher"

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/608936594993586176

"[Card Introduction] The promoted Swordmaster Lon'qu seems to have a bit more experience dealing with his gynophobia, doesn't he? His attack power goes up for each ally sword-bearing unit on the field. Use his unavoidable attacks to finish off an opponent. (Illustrator: Clover K) #FEcipher"

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/608939129770942464

"[Event] There will be a special Niconico livestream event on June 22nd just before Cipher launches. For more information on registering for the stream and other details, check the official site #FEcipher https://fecipher.jp/contact/campaign/"

    https://twitter.com/FEcipher/status/608939214521024512

"[Kawade] Of course, I'll be there at the special livestream on the 22nd. I won't be helping with the preparations of the event hall (my apologies), but I will be hyping this up alongside all the fans. I hope you all tune in for the niconico stream. #FEcipher"

It's interesting, the Wrys card is a copy text-wise of the "Healing Priest, Wrys" card. Same skill "Vulnerary" and same Unit Name, Healing Priest. The exclusive parts are that he is a promoted Hero card instead of an unpromoted Priest and that can actually attack as an axe affinity unit with 60/10 attack instead of 30/20. The quote is also different, but I'm haven't quite gotten around to translating the Promo cards as of yet.

The Cordelia Pegasus Knight card might also be a copy of a yet to be shown normal Cordelia Pegasus Knight card that should exist alongside her Dark Flier card if my understanding of the card release patterns is correct.

-The Special Edition Marth art was used in a previously shown Walhart card. Very strange

-Posted in the news thread, but tournaments going on in Japan have the following cards as promos: Jagen, Minerva, Tharja, Tiki, Cordelia, and Wrys. Cordelia and Wrys card effects are unique, but the other four cards are parallel versions of the cards found in the set. A pack of 2 random cards is distributed to each participant, another pack for the tournament winner, and another pack for a random participant besides the winner.

This Walhart card is still something I'm extremely curious about. I don't remember where I found that picture unfortunately, and I can't make out too much of the Japanese on the card due to the poor image quality. It's obviously a defunct beta card of some sort, but why would they have made a Walhart card where that character isn't even on the card? Also the first skill looks like it reads something like "王女のカリスマ” which would be "Princess's Charisma" which just makes things even more confusing. There hasn't been any other indications that they plan to make another Walhart card, so we may not ever know.

  23. Just got done with the card translations included in today's scans and wanted to bring them over here to help finish out a full translation of the new info for the thread.
