  1. Hey guys, I like educating people on matters of Smash. This thread will be Q & A of sorts where you can ask anything (Smash related) such as my competive experiences, what characters are good, how can I improve (include vids plz), how to play against a character, challenge my knowledge, etc..

Just know that your question will be in reference to my opinion mostly, which is based observations I've made. I have something to say on pretty much everything, so no such thing as a dumb/pointless question. Others can answer too if they want, always good to have more feedback.

  2. That'd be Laura, Aran, Jill and Muarim for P1.

Marcia, Lethe and Makalol for P2.

Ike, Rolf, Boyd, Oscar, Gatrie, Rhys, Ranulf, Lyre, Sigrun and Tanith for P3.

Sanaki, Stefan, Oliver, Kurthnaga, Renning and Gareth for P4.

    Quite the team!

I might even be able to finish DB chapters with only those characters. I'll have to include Micaiah until 1-9 because I can't really bench her since she needs to take hits in that chapter.

You think I should restrict skill equips on these units too? Also, what is the endgame party size?

  3. Looking for ideas for a hard mode challenge run. Only stipulation is I get to do whatever I want for the DB chapter. Make it as challenging or interesting as you can without being too absurd (like Laguz only). Maybe mono-hair color or mono weapon would be cool?

  4. Didn't really have anything to say about Bayonetta. Still in that weird post nerf state.

Bowser is second best super heavy after DK and considered mid tier. Suprisingly good run speed. His major issues lie with an edgeguardable recovery, bad approaches, very slow jumpsquat, and poor landing options which are really bad weaknesses to have in Smash 4. On the other hand he has great damage output, throws, and kill power while having pretty average frame data. I don't think hes quite solo viable because top tiers take advantage of those weaknesses very well but he can be a pretty good CP character especially against slower characters.

  5. Please Knife, you're a Link player, you guys get hate all the time for using him lmao.

You complained about how much he relied on combos, in a game that "shouldn't have them" your own words if I recall, also people love complaining about Little Mac, Shulk (In particular his counter), i'm not talking about just high level here, I'm talking at all levels of the game

1 word, Metaknight. In Brawl we didn't have patches, so his being the top was near unchallenged, hell there was only 1 characrer who was considered able to match him, and it was Pikachu (And it was only in that match up, not in general, Pikachu suffered vs alot of the other top peeps of Brawl). And even THAT was debated among players.

Pretty much every character who is at some kind of high level in smash, has had plenty of complaints about them. Smash 4 has quite a few nice things said about its higher tier people, such as Mario being absolutely braindead, Sonic being cancer, Rosalina being OP, Sheik being Sheik, etc. Now that Bayo has been knocked down a few pegs, the community will find someone new to latch onto to hate, which by the looks of it seem to be hilariously Diddy Kong becoming possibly the best character again.

Also I had totally forgotten about this.

Sorry I was speaking in the context of competitive players, not casuals. No competitive player I know would really complain about Link, his flaws are many and obvious. Also I main Greninja.

  6. Yes, people will always whine to a certain extent, but I believe that if she had made less of an impact from the start then there would've been less reason to nerf her. That's just my reasoning here; nobody (at least in comparison to Bayonetta) was really complaining about Lucas or Roy, were they?

No one is gonna complain about mid and low tier characters. People did cry about Roy's fsmash being too strong in the beginning but his flaws were found out fairly quickly and it stopped.

Also yeah, they kinda gutted Bayo. You can get out of pretty much every special combo with light SDI. Dtilt reduced range hurts her best grounded combo starter. DABK is almost completely useless as a move.

The best tool about her now is Witch Time to smash attack, which is sad. I think she will fall to mid tier now.

  7. It's OK. Let's be honest. There's no way everyone can be perfectly balanced in a game where there are 50+ characters and each one has a unique style. Just accept Dedede and Jiggs are probably going to stay bad and either continue to play them or play one of the other 50+ chars.

There has never been a character buffed into top tier before, Mewtwo comes the closest though. At this point of development it's probably wise to stop buffing characters so that the balance is not potentially compromised. 1.16 is the most balanced patch by far and if nerfed Diddy is the best in the game, I'm pretty happy with that.

  8. I believe Samus can perform better in the overall meta. She has stuff Link needs in a competitive environment such as OoS options (Screwattack has intangibility starting frame 3 and hits on frame 5), much better jumpsquat (4 frames vs Link's 7 frames) which equates to a better shield/escape game, combo game, much better disadvantage state being a floaty (unless its against MK), slightly better recovery, and more threatening projectile.

She loses out to Link in pure kill power (which is why Ganondorf is so great right?), range, and close combat (though Samus's jab is still a much faster get off me option than Link's being frame 3 vs Link's frame 7 jab). Not to mention Samus has had a lot more success. Samus being bad is a meme though, in all past Smash games Samus has been better than Link and I believe it is still true in this game, largely due to Link's design flaws. For the record though, they are closer than ever in regard to relative viability.

On another topic, I believe Dedede is the worst character. A fast falling heavy (practically a combination begging to be comboed by top tiers) that has trouble killing and landing? I don't really see any character having it worse except possibly Jigglypuff.

  9. Alrighty, let me get in on this if we're not being super specific; I'm going primarily by "Estimated strength of the kit at top level, but when results contradict theory results take precedence". Seems similar to what you're doing, so hi-ho!

Sheik vs. Rosa: General wisdom says she loses zero matchups before Bayonetta, and probably has the best tournament results of any character ever. I understand the logic of putting Bayo over her, but Rosa? Not to mention that Sheik carries how many top 10-15 players (not to say that they aren't extraordinary already)? At least four? Whereas Rosa's representation at that tier of play is mostly Dabuz. Don't get me wrong, I hate Rosa with a burning passion and think her design is insane, but Sheik has been demonstrated to just have too versatile of a kit to deny.

Diddy: I think you're overrating him a bit. I think he's top 10 still but he does have his struggles; namely, you can just disrespect fair/bair once you get to 120 or so (I mean, depends on the stage, character, rage, etc., but dtilt => usmash and uthrow => uair kill percents) and he starts having a lot of trouble actually sealing the deal, requiring an outright punish or callout instead of a mixup/conversion off a spacing tool.

Mewtwo: Why is he so high...? There have been some results lately, but is there some like "someone beat Nairo at a major to take 2nd" shit I'm missing? His offense is nuts but he's kinda combo food and kinda gets chewed up by block as a rule. Most every top- or high-tier in this game has some serious mileage off calling out an opponent's block (or else is just UTTERLY RIDICULOUS), and I don't see other of those elements out of Mewtwo.

Peach could in theory be higher, but so few people use her (especially in the US) that I understand why she's in C.

E: How can you guys not tell Elie's joshing, I thought you both knew he's at least decent (roughly on my level afaik; maybe not super knowledgeable or skillful but doesn't talk out his ass)

What general wisdom? She definitely loses a few MUs as of post patch. Most notably Diddy, with Zinoto beating Void at least twice since the latest patch. She is also not as polarizing as Rosalina post patch.

Diddy is very good in this latest patch. He arguably has tools to win most MUs and has very very strong results at the mid level and at the top level (Zinoto).

Can't comment on Mewtwo, his placement is very wavy for now.

  10. Your list is pretty accurate. I only look at S through part of B tier (1-20) because of lack of exposure and volatility, after Captain Falcon I can see lots of interchangeability (I'd personally put Peach after Falcon then Greninja after Peach). As for your top 20, I agree with it for the most part except I would put Diddy at 3rd (he just had an amazing weekend and he doesn't lose to anyone below him except maybe Mario Bros./Fox). Move Sheik behind Diddy (only top level Sheik's have been able to win with her, mid-high level Sheiks winning are rare now, still doing better than ZSS tho) and move Cloud behind Mario (Cloud's results have fallen off at higher rankings while Mario/Fox get better placings overall) and move Sonic behind Cloud (for similar reasons).

    1. Bayo (loses to no one, evenish with Rosa/Diddy/Sheik/Sonic/few zoners)

    2. Rosa (loses to Cloud/MK/ZSS/some swordies)

    3. Diddy (loses to Rosa/Mario/Fox/Luigi)

    4. Sheik (loses to Diddy/Mario/Lucario)

    5. ZSS (loses to Bayo/Diddy/Greninja)

    6. Fox (loses to Bayo/Rosa/Sheik/Mario/Cloud/Luigi/Kirby)

    7. Mario (loses to Bayo/Rosa/Cloud)

    8. Cloud (loses to Bayo/Diddy/Sheik)

    9. Sonic (loses to Rosa/Fox/Cloud/Lucario)

    10. Ryu (loses to Bayo/Sonic/Pikachu/some zoners most notably Mega Man)

This game has pretty good balance when each and every character in top 10 is scary. Fox is kinda the odd man out among the top tiers with a bunch of bad/suspect MUs, but yet he still does very well results wise and doesn't lose any matchups that hard.

  11. While i've steadily improved and done fairly well at my local scene, I'm still significantly less good than I'd like to be at this point, I was wondering if anyone had tips on being less predictable, its a common critique I get, while I'm able to fix my bad habits, this one has proven annoying to get over.

Part of it I think stems from the fact that I'm way too aggressive in this game, but I'm not sure otherwise.

Everyone thinks they're aggressive and blames that for the reason why they lose but do not really understand what good aggression means. Good aggression is not just approaching all the time and throwing out attacks and hope one will connect. Good aggression is using your movement/spacing more to threaten a defensive option (shield, spotdodge, jump) and taking advantage of that defensive option (respectively grab, run up smash/pivot grab, and catching landings).

Zoning is a different game, but not all characters zone. Though I can expand on this aspect if people are curious.

Anyway, I always tell people to crossup, tomahawk, and pivot grab/smash spotdodges more. I also feel like in general people don't punish landings enough and either let the opponent aerial them on landing for free (there is no such thing as a safe aerial if you can anticipate and powershield it), try to go for an inefficient juggle (some characters are better off not jumping up after opponents, especially against like Divekicking Bayonettas), or are just bad at recognizing an opponent's landing habits (they roll away after landing (beat with dash attack/grab), jab (beat with spaced smash or shield), jump again (beat with running upsmash), shield (grab em), spotdodge (pivot grab/run up smash) etc.). Fast projectiles usually cover many landing options (this is why top Diddys prefer to pull a banana and hit your landing, they get way more out of that than trying to juggle you with aerials). Running under someone landing and holding shield usually covers many options at once.

Anyways, improve fundamentals, learn mixups, and recognize patterns. Smash 4.
