Newbie (1/14)

  1. I gave a unit the Seal with an event and it works fine, in and out of battle. I'm playing in EHM on a ROM if it matters.
  2. I believe it is 15x10. The same size as a GBA screen.
  3. Yes, I am forcing EHM. I got my info from this page that says that promoted generics in all 3 hard modes gain 19 levels in the unpromoted class. It might be wrong though, as it didn't seem to work that way when I tested it.
  4. Yeah, turns out you were right. I was loading the routine at the beggining of the chapter, after the enemies loaded. However, something weird is happening. Promoted enemies are still using the normal Mode formula or their stats but the Hard mode formula for the exp calculations. This is basically wha I wanted all along, but I have no idea why its happening. Just thought somebody might want to know. Either way, I'm satisfied. Thanks for the help.
  5. I'l try lowering the promoted growth rates, this should balance it a bit, I think. Thans for the idea. However, it seems I'm doing something wrong. When I tested to see if Hard Mode was affecting the Exp calculations, it turns out it doesn't and the normal mode calculation is still used to make promoted units give ridiculous exp. What I'm doing is using the ASM hack to force HHM (by Blazer), slightly tweaked to force EHM, as an event during the first chapter of Eliwood mode. I've checked in the memory viewer at 0x0202BC0C and the value is 40, meaning it is in Hard Mode. Also, the enemies don't seem to have their stats calculated using the Hard Mode formula, they only seem to have 10 levels worth of stats before promo while they should have 19. So, it is pretty apparent that I'm not doing it right and that I'm not even using Hard Mode. I treid using the HHM forcer hack and I have the same results, exp calculation is the same and the promoted enemies seem to have only gained 10 levels. However, all enemies gain some extra levels like it was done in FE7 HHM, so I'm pretty sure I'm using it right. So I ask, is there anyway to force Hard Mode? Or is there something I am completely missing?
  6. I know asm will be needed for something like this. It just seems like a pretty common problem that is caused by a single variable in a formula. I don't know asm (yet) but it seems like something that someone would have done already. Oh well, if it happens that no one took the time to do it, I really can't expect someone to do work for me.
  7. So most of you know about the calculations of Exp in FE7 where in Eliwwod and Hector's normal modes, there is a Mode coefficient in the formula that makes it so sometimes the exp received is ridiculously high. (It happens when a promoted unit kills another, see the Calculations page on the main site if you don't know). The most common solution to this has been to have ridiculously low-leveled promoted enemy units, but that is pretty restraining and can become ridiculous. Anyway, I've been trying to find a way to work around this. The simplest solution I could think of was to use Hard mode. This seems to fix the problem of Exp calculation (though I haven't thoroughly tested this yet) but it brings with it its own problems. In Hard mode, promoted units grow 19 levels in their unpromoted class while in Normal Mode they only grow 9 levels. This makes them much more powerful, and I would like to remove that effect. So what I want to know is this: How exactly does Hard Mode work and are its effects editable in any way? Or even better, is there anyway to fix the exp gains in Normal mode without resorting to Hard Mode? It sounds like something relatively simple to do, only one variable to change, but I've searched and nothing has come up. I've been trying to figure this out myself, but I can't ASM to change the formula. I suppose it would be possible to live with Hard Mode as it is, but I would prefer not to. Thanks for any and all information on this matter.
  8. Are you trying to edit character classes with the Character editor? If so, that's your problem. The classes of characters have to be changed with the Chapter Unit editor.
  9. Oh, I had no idea absolute black was also used in some palettes. I doesn't surprise me though. I never tried it myself for SNES games, I just assumed it would work.
  10. If no one has them to give to you, you could always get them yourself. All you have to do is remove the graphic layers and take screenshots frame by frame. (Basically all that will actually appear on screen will be the battle sprites, so you'll need to erase the enemy battle sprite and keep the ones you want.) This is quite easy actually, though it takes some time. Hopefully someone has what you need.
  11. When I opened your portrait in Usenti, I noticed it didn't align exactly right which is why it doesn't look right. Your blinking and talking frames need to be taken from the right position or else it won't look right. What I mean is, when you take a part of your portrait to do the frames, it should be exactly 32x16 pixels and the top-left most square's coordinates should be multiples of 8. An easy way to make sure this is right is to open your portrait in Usenti and show the Tile Grid. This should make a blue grid appear on your picture. Every square of this grid is 8x8 pixels so make sure your blinking frames correspond to an intersection in the lines. Your frames should be 4 8x8 squares by 2 8x8 squares.
  12. Well, I really only need 2 different main characters and I only need to switch once between the two, so that's why I used Lyn's mode (though it would be nice to have more freedom for special chapters or something like that). The game still seems to recognize Eliwood as main character for everything but the cursor. I never tried to do ASM hacking since I never really needed it. Would it be very complicated to make it so Eliwood can appear in LM and still get the autocursor? Or maybe I could get the game to start in EM and make my first main character replace Eliwood's unit slot and then mid-game switch it to HM and replace Hector's slot for the rest of the game. Though I noticed that ASM hack to force Hector Mode is actually forcing Hector Hard Mode. Does that change anything? I know enemy units get a stat bonus in HHM but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible. Also I see the exp calculations are quite different in Hard Mode. This might be a bit off-topic, but it seems the Hard Mode calculation for exp is preferable since it doesn't give very large amounts for killing weaker units with stronger units. Any way to force Hard Mode without the stat bonus to every enemy unit? Either way, I can certainly make-do with not having Eliwood appear in Lyn Mode. I'm not sure that idea is worth trying to do ASM which I hear is probably one of the hardest things in hacking.
  13. I'm thinking of simply using an identical character, but as you said stat transfers will be a problem as well as item transfer. Eliwood is actually playable in Lyn mode so that's a problem. The reason I use Lyn mode is because I need to have 2 parts to the hack. The first part has a different main character in the Lyn_t slot and the second part has the main character in the Eliwood slot. Which makes me wonder, is there any way to change modes mid-game, like going from LM to EM to HM and back in the same playthrough so multiple characters could be the main character in different chapters?Or even better, a way to change who the main character is? I haven't encountered such an event anywhere and the only time it happens in FE7 is the end of Lyn's mode but that's only one way. Either way, I'll probably end up creating an identical character to replace Eliwood and limit him to cutscenes if there's no other way.
  14. So my problem is that in Eliwood mode the cursor doesn't go to the character in Eliwood's slot at the beggining of each turn. (Yes I checked the options, autocursor is on). What it does instead is go to the tile at 0,0 (so in the top left corner). I did some testing, and I figured out why its doing this. Basically, I have the character in Eliwood's slot appear during Lyn's mode and somehow, this makes the game not recognize him as the main hero as far as autocursor is concerned. (If I edit my events so he's not loaded in LM, the autocursor works fine in EM). However, the game still seems to recognize Eliwod as main character for everything else (Seizing and giving items to main character). Also, the game seems to interpret the first character that is loaded next as main character for cursor purpose, provided the unit wasn't loaded during Lyn's mode. Something that seems to work is to go to battle preparation. There the game recognizes Eliwwod is the MC, forces him to every chapter and the autocursor works as it should. The thing is I don't really want to use this since it also lets the player see and choose several units from Lyn's mode that shouldn't be available (because the game only eliminates the units with a _t and I don't use them nor could I since I have too many units for the limited _t unit slots). I could just make it so all the character's from Lyn mode are banned, but they could still be seen and that isn't really ideal. Do any of you know if there is a workaround? There doesn't seem to be but I figured I might as well ask. Either way, its not a very important problem and there are many easy but not ideal solutions to this (like not loading Eliwood in Lyn's mode or having a battle prep).
  15. All right, thanks to both of you. This is actually much simpler than I thought it would be.
