  1. Continuing Trails to Azure's finale

    Spoiler

Rixia's been in the party for 20 minutes and she already saved Lloyd's life twice. The SSS really should've recruited her earlier (though that would necessitate knowing she's Yin).

They seemed to have gotten the short end of the stick. When you think about it, the Solm chapters don't really focus a whole lot on them, unlike with the other royals. Heck, you have the whole Hortensia thing happening in Solm itself, so it robs a little to Solm's own focus.

I can't believe Timerra's relevance peaks during her introduction scene. Though if relevance to the plot mattered that much, Alear and Veyle would be the only characters on the poll.

  2. When the Mario movie has a Pikmin reference for two seconds

    leo-pointing.jpg

My sister couldn't tell that Mario was voiced by Chris Pratt, so I think that means he did a good job.

Also, I have started Trails to Azure's final chapter.

    Spoiler

Surprisingly enough, Garcia returns and helps Lloyd escape from prison. Getting to use unexpected characters is fun.

Now we've caught up to Cold Steel II... maybe, Lloyd was imprisoned for a few weeks so it's hard to tell if Rean is still unconscious. There are a few new plot points established:

Zeit is a Holy Beast: technically not a twist since it was established in chapter 1 of Zero, but what that means isn't explored until now. In fact, he even has a book about him. Are there any works of fiction in Zemuria? He gets along well with Cecile, so maybe she's descended from St. Ursula.

KeA is an artificial Sept-Terrion created to replace Demiourgos, which erased itself from existence in the past: previously I thought she was either a vessel for D or D somehow incarnated as a human, rather than an entirely new Sept-Terrion. I wonder if Demiourgos will return somehow...

Wazy is the Ninth Dominion, the Sapphire Testament: any relation to Xenosaga is currently unverified, however. I was wondering if he had a Stigma back when he fought Wald earlier. Additionally we learn Kevin's new title, the Thousand-Hand Guardian.

It seems the first part of the finale will involve reassembling the party. Even Zeit becomes playable, since his non-interference policy expired when Demiourgos disappeared. So that means Rixia will hopefully join soon, though Dudley probably won't join until we return to Crossbell City.

  3. The ending of Trails to Azure's fourth chapter proves that Trails and Xeno are the same series. Does Takahashi have writing credit?

    Spoiler

If I had a nickel for every JRPG with a mecha called Aion that's powered by a divine artifact, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. I intended to make this joke back when I played Cold Steel II, and it turned out to be more apt than I expected at the time. Though one of them looks more like Xenogears than Artifice Aion.

The only previous mention of the Sept-Terrions within the last two games was an offhand comment by Joshua, but now Mariabell appears in full supervillain getup to explain how one of them was passed down her family for generations. It turns out the DG cult was more or less created by the Crois family, which I didn't expect. I thought Dieter would be primarily motivated by Crossbell's independence and he would use the Sept-Terrion to accomplish that, but it turns out he's a crazy cultist. He and Mariabell being evil and crazy all along makes their previous friendliness unnerving in hindsight. I hope Bleublanc knows just who he was stealing from.

KeA reveals her true identity, KOS-MOS! I mean, the Sept-Terrion of Mirage... I mean, the Sept-Terrion of Zero... I'm sure it'll be explained eventually. There are still two missing data entries after all.

Of course there is a mostly-unwinnable fight with Arios, I'm getting rather tired of those. I wasn't expecting him to take an antagonistic role, even as a "I must use dark power to resurrect my wife" kind of villain.

I was thinking between games that "Guy's killer" and "whoever brought KeA to the auction" were the same person, and it seems that was correct (unless Arios just blames himself for Guy's death and didn't actually kill him). I previously thought Cecile was a suspect and that she was secretly an Enforcer (for some reason), but I dismissed that thought by the intermission. I owe her an apology. My prediction back at the end of Zero that Ouroboros was behind both those things was also wrong, which I expected at this point due to their downplayed role in this game.

I expect the finale chapter will involve the party revisiting the three temples a la the Tetracyclic Towers in SC, maybe fighting an Ouroboros member each time. Only then will Rixia join the party...

I'm guessing it will have Detective Pikachu invite Mario to the Super Smash Brothers initiative.

  4. I will finish chapter 4 of Trails to Azure tomorrow, we're reaching levels of wild ride that shouldn't even be possible!

The new Tears of the Kingdom trailer was the most exciting one since the game was announced, I'm not sure if I'll get it at launch but I'll get it eventually. It's good to see Ganondorf again, it's been 17 years since his last mainline appearance. For reference, that's roughly the time between The Wind Waker and the original Zelda.

    Ganonchrom

I will see The Super Mario Bros. Movie in a few days and I hear it has a post-credits scene. Is it anything important or just a joke? I'm asking because my family will be annoyed if I make them stay for the entire credits.

  5. Midway through chapter 4 of Trails to Azure, the ride does not slow down. It's a wild ride, this passage of fate.

    Spoiler

Just as abrupt out-of-universe as it is in-universe, Mayor Crois is now President Crois of the Independent State of Crossbell, and Arios is his secretary of defense. Given his increasingly fishy behavior, it makes me wonder if Dieter has some dirt on him. Dieter is acting pretty fishy too, I wonder if he's being manipulated somehow... probably not directly by Ouroboros, since Arianrhod (who I can call by her name now) seems to be taking a hands-off approach. KeA is also acting pretty fishy, maybe it has something to do with her conversation with Mariabell at the end of the intermission...

Despite what Dieter said, I'm not fully convinced Erebonia was behind the Red Constellation's attack, maybe because it seems like the obvious answer. Not that I can guess who they're working for, but whoever it is is presumably the main villain. They stole the bell that was in Central Plaza, which is probably significant given all the weird things bells do in Crossbell.

Per Cold Steel, the declaration of independence happens on October 21st, and [REDACTED] happens on October 24th. What will happen between then?

Lastly, Wazy and Noel have both left the party. I wasn't sure if Noel would actually end up leaving (but she'll probably return sooner or later), and Wazy being gone is likely related to Dieter somehow (because Wazy joined the SSS on his recommendation, remember?). I was wondering if Rixia would end up joining to take Noel's place, but I doubt that'll happen until next chapter at least since she's hiding out at the Ancient Battlefield.

It looks like you didn't get the Hylian Shield. Did you not feel like going through the Lightning Round for it?

Also, if BotW is the last game in your Zelda marathon, I'm interested in seeing what the final ranking turns out to be. Maybe BotW aged poorly and will be below Adventure of Link.

Actually, I don't recall if you played Tri Force Heroes. It is canon (for some reason), but I would understand if you skipped it.

Now that I actually know what Testa-Rossa means, I wonder why the Erebonians named a demon "redhead"...

I knew I should've tested her compatibility with Lloyd instead.

I can't believe Noel has a fetish for crossdressing men, too bad she never met Joshua.

To try out something else, I am replaying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's World of Light with Nuzlocke rules. It'll probably go poorly, but who knows how it will turn out? I lost Mario the first battle I used him in... I have Kirby, Villager, and Lucario unlocked while Mario and Link have fallen.

As for more Trails to Azure

    Spoiler

Wald went screwy, and before you knew he was trying to kill everyone. It wasn't a direction I was expecting for his character, though it makes sense for Wazy to get a personal enemy. Now I just have to figure out who will be involved in the obligatory final dungeon boss rush...

Now we are in the Azure Wetlands and Yin joined the party, hooray. I doubt she'll join permanently at this time, but the party has to find out her identity eventually. It feels like something important will happen here...

  10. I don't plan on getting the Fell Xenologue yet, but is there a list of supports for the new characters? I want to know if you-know-who got any new ones.

In related news, it's been revealed that the Fog King's battle theme is called "Roar from Beyond". Considering what we know of Wave 4, this means Takahashi is cooking.

In retrospect, the Fog King was probably just a Guldo that somehow wandered into the XC1 universe. So technically Future Connected did set up XC3, just not in a way that's immediately obvious.

Food for thought though. Did Alear stopped aging while they were asleep? Because they looked exactly the same a thousand years ago, coded 17 if we consider the data. So still the equivalent of human 17 despite the thousand years passing?

Probably, Tiki says something to this effect in Warriors ("Even though we live a long time, we do still age. I just look extra young 'cause I was asleep for most of those thousand years."). So Alear stayed basically the same age while Veyle grew from a child to a teenager in the same amount of time.

KeA will be the most popular girl in Sunday School when she catches the Regis without using a guide, whenever someone creates Orbalmon in Zemuria. Whether or not Louis Braille exists in the Trails universe remains to be seen, however.

How you're supposed to use the two new characters doesn't seem as straightforward as the previous four (Wazy in particular), so I ended up using Noel as another dedicated attacker and Wazy as a buff/debuff caster. I'm not sure if that's what you're supposed to do with them, but whatever works.

    Haha...

Oddly enough, this topic was brought up in game.

    Spoiler

Joerg says that "the society's intervention here pales in comparison to what happened in Liberl", which is a way of saying that Ouroboros won't be as present as they were in SC. From my count, the only previously-introduced Enforcers that aren't in Erebonia/dead/on leave/defected besides Campanella is Walter. It's possible there won't be any new ones introduced in this game, which is mildly puzzling for... hypotheses I'm probably wrong about. KeA (who may or may not be D) is probably relevant to their plans regardless, but they could manipulate someone else into doing... whatever they're planning.

Funnily enough the Steel Maiden appears in the Anguis lineup despite not being properly introduced yet, though I technically know what she looks like already since I played out of order (also, she's in the intro). Weissmann and Novartis are also present while the other four Anguis are silhouettes. The difference in hierarchy between the Anguis and Enforcers is also explained somewhat (the Anguis come up with the society's plans, which Enforcers lack the authority to do).

Playing this and Cold Steel makes Ouroboros's proactivity in the Liberl arc feel strange in retrospect. They even had a secret villain base in Liberl, though that might have been one of the Thirteen Factories.

The ending of Zero didn't mention what happened to Pater-Mater, so I didn't know whether or not it stayed at the Rosenberg Studio or if it went with Renne to Liberl. The former being correct makes sense, since I don't think Pater-Mater would fit in the storage of an airship anyway.

Bro like Moana ain't even a Disney classic from the 90s or some shit, that movie came out in 2016.

I mean, they're probably running out of movies to remake that people fondly remember. Soon they'll have to remake their remakes. Live action Frozen when?

The fact that Rock "the Dwayne" Johnson apparently has his own production company might also have something to do with it.

  13. Moments with Mauvier

The Intermission is truly the chapter of Rixia... she really only got two scenes focusing on her, more if you spend tickets on her, but that's still more than she usually gets.

And then you get to the boss and oh no...

    Spoiler

I spoke too soon about Luciola's cloud minions. I only got a game over once rather than spending an hour on the battle as in SC, so it could've been worse. Campanella properly introduces himself to the party and KeA is rescued from a sleepwalking episode, here I thought this would be a break chapter...

Campanella meets with the First and Sixth Anguis at the Celestial Globe... how can this be, the arc isn't even over yet! Regardless, this suggests that Ouroboros will presumably be more active going forward. The other Enforcers Campanella brings up are Bleublanc, Renne, and Luciola, so who knows who else will be involved in this mission. The First Anguis seems to be in charge of things whenever the Grandmaster is elsewhere, and I think this is the first reference (in a game I played so far) to the Grandmaster being female.

When she shows up, the Seventh Anguis mentions leaving "matters" in the hands of "the Oathbreaker". I'm not sure if I'd want someone with that title in my organization. She and Sixth are heading to Crossbell soon, so there will be maximum fun. And importantly, Duvalie hype.

Shizuku underwent a surgical procedure and has her eyes open now, but her eyesight still hasn't recovered. I feel like everyone would be less disappointed if the surgery did nothing. I feel like the game will explain what caused her blindness sooner or later, and it's probably related to the circumstances behind her mother's death.

I wonder what Lloyd meant when he said Rixia was the perfect height. Anyway, now I am at the amusement park. I probably won't spend an hour on the Horror Coaster with Rixia at the present time, but I did go with her to the fortune teller and hmm...

    Spoiler

Is the fortune teller Luciola? I wasn't expecting her to show up here of all places. It would explain where she ended up after disappearing in SC, and she was a fortune teller before joining Ouroboros. She probably isn't affiliated with the society anymore if she's working at an amusement park, but you can never be too sure... She doesn't have her cloud minions either, which is a good sign.

  15. After all the stuff in the last chapter, we now have an obligatory beach episode (though the other games had hot springs instead). The NPCs who show up are all girls, I can't believe we didn't get lifeguard Dudley. Lloyd and Rixia have a nice time teaching their kids KeA and Sully how to swim; they haven't had many one-on-one moments since Rixia isn't a member of the main party, so it's nice how they got one now.

    Spoiler

Also, Gideon was here too. He probably would've been better off surrendering to the SSS.

For as much as I heard about it already, the terrorist attack was smaller scale than I was expecting. They didn't really come close to assassinating anyone and they ended up aiding Osborne/Rocksmith's plans. Not to mention, they probably would've been captured immediately if Campanella didn't hack the security system. Maybe they should've just stayed home? It at least gave an opportunity for Arios, Dudley, Julia, Mueller, Lechter, and Kilika to help us out. Even Jona got to contribute!

Osborne is evil as usual and Rocksmith is openly friendly but no less shrewd, and after all the political nonsense I understand Crois's motives for wanting independence. Even if it will probably lead to him doing... interesting things later.

But it's a good thing nobody tried to hijack the railway guns in Garrelia Fortress, that would've been bad.

I might get Engage's DLC if I ever feel like replaying it... whenever that is.

Often when things work out in the goodie-two-shoes paths it's because of him, too. None of this changes the fact that he's kind of an asshole.

  20. Since she helped us interrogate rich people, Shirley... is good? I appreciate her not trying anything with Rixia, at least.

    Spoiler

I'll admit that Julia's fan club wasn't a point that I thought would carry over from 3rd.

Something I wondered about while playing Cold Steel was how Liberl felt about the stuff happening in Erebonia, and while the civil war obviously hasn't happened yet, it's nice to see Kloe working with Olivert in trying to diffuse things. All the stuff in Erebonia made me forget that the WZTC was attacked by Calvardian terrorists as well. Calvard has an anti-immigration faction? It really is fantasy America.

After we team up with Doodles again, Campanella showcases his villainy by making us play a puzzle game for DP (though oddly you can lower the difficulty upon retrying, unlike the rest of the game). But it comes with a remix of SC's Enforcer theme, so I'll give him this one.

Fortunately Tio saves us with her gamer credentials, so now the whole SSS is assembled. Now the question is, when does Rixia become playable?

I thought you always went for Sooks%.

It turns out I was thinking of something else (Zero has a hidden quest with a DP requirement, so maybe that's what I was thinking of). And now the game wants me to Phoenix Wright my way out of this mess. This is... dramatically different from the branch I took in my first run. Love it.

And here I thought Triangle Strategy was a game about war. Who needs warfare when you can put your enemies on trial instead?

  21. One day I will learn to mod to make the fight against Lynn and Aeolia winnable, but for now I must endure...

Erebonia was in development since the 3rd. Ironically, this part only shows Falcon's poor planning.

When you simultaneously planned everything but still didn't entirely think things through. Though it does validate my choice to play Cold Steel first.

On an unrelated note, my life has not been the same since I noticed Benedict is balding.

Maybe he's wearing a wig... but would that make his beard a wig too?

True, it must be nice if getting angry is an unusual occurrence.

I wonder what happens if I burn her at the stake

It'll make her a martyr, which would be bad news for you.

Glenbrook's probably the nicest to be at, and even that one's got a pretty massive issue with corruption running rampant in the background.

Honestly, are there any JRPG settings that would be good places to live? Certainly not any of the Xenoblade settings. I guess Liberl hasn't been too bad so far, barring the society shenanigans in SC. Pokémon too, since every world-threatening event can be resolved by a ten year old.

  23. While I knew all along that Trails had an interconnected narrative, as it was one of the reasons I played it, the West Zemuria Trade Conference starting is the first time it actually felt like one. Though oddly, some of the games referenced here were released after this one.

    Spoiler

Olivert is introduced reading reports from Class VII, probably from Sara saying that Rean couldn't figure out how Crow made his 50 mira disappear. Rean and co. should be in Legram right now, if I recall. It's funny how the first thing you learn about the Imperial Liberation Front is that they're working for Duke Cayenne, now I feel silly for not figuring it out earlier. No wonder they hate Osborne, with him spending 100 million taxpayer mira on bodyguards.

Kloe has returned, all is right in the world. Noel has good taste. Julia and Mueller are back too, even Richard got a mention. I was wondering if Estelle and Joshua would attend as Kloe's bodyguards, but apparently not. Also Towa is here, even though she technically didn't exist yet when Azure first released.

Already more proactive than he was during the Gospel Plan, Campanella is up to... something. It makes me wonder how Ouroboros will involve itself with all these factions at work. It seems like the next fews days will mark a turning point in the plot.

The planet is as big as the Sun? Magcargo is hotter than the surface of the actual Sun, so maybe the Pokémon universe's Sun is hotter than that.

Instead of fending off the ugly guy from the Land of Racism who wants to conquer our demesne, like last time, we're going to... cast our lot with him, and fight our temporary allies instead.

Having played TS's demo, I can't tell whether "the Land of Racism" refers to Aesfrost or Hyzante. I'm not sure if any of the countries are great places to live in, now that I think about it.
