  1. How Spider-Man: Far From Home should've went

10 hours ago, Saint Rubenio said:

That one also didn't do anything with its story that caught my interest even slightly. Oh, and the combat was completely and utterly mindless for all 10 hours I played.

...No criticism intended towards it though, it was just not my jam. Too lighthearted, too silly adventury, too coming of agey, too boy meets girly, and yes, too slow. For reference, Exit Fate stars a dude pushing his 30s who is decidedly more mature, experienced and collected than basically all JRPG protagonists, and spends a good chunk of its runtime being about old people concocting logical (enough) strategies to beat one another. And politics. 75 playable characters, too. It's a complete outlier and that's why I liked it.

Oh, I don't really mind if you go back to it or not. I just thought it was funny that Trails did something you liked (for once). Trails in the Sky starts pretty slow and sometimes even I wonder how I got through it (it was the promise of eventually seeing Rixia, probably), though I generally didn't mind the relaxed pace too much. Trails from Zero and Trails of Cold Steel open with in medias res segments to assure you that there will be a main conflict eventually.

Actually you should start with Trails through Daybreak, apparently some characters treat the protagonist like he's an old man (he's 24).

Hey, want to hear about a Japanese video game that was originally released on PC?

I was thinking just that. Didn't they showcase a new Persona 5 game in a Microsoft direct? MicroDollars must be tempting -although the odd thing is Microsoft doesn't care that much about Xbox, since PCs run on their OS and GamePass covers it too.

I think Japanese developers only release games on Xbox if Microsoft pays them. Which is mostly just Persona, Yakuza, and a handful of Capcom games it looks like. Dragon Quest XI also got an Xbox port, which probably came with the territory of the definitive edition also getting a PS4 port.

  2. I saw Spooder-Man: Across the Spooder-Verse, Miguel did nothing wrong. It was good, but I can't judge it fully because it's just the first half of one bigger movie (aka it's Trails). It's already the longest American animated film, too.

I like how Spot goes from a funny joke villain to a funny cosmic horror. All the different versions of Spider-Man were fun, they even included the one that sounds like Marth, but I wish they included Marvel vs. Capcom Spider-Man. He could say "Guess I'd better call for backup", tag in Vergil, and then Miles hears boss music.

Why did they include Peni if she was only going to get one line of dialogue? She's living up to her Evangelion roots more so maybe she accidentally caused Third Impact back in her universe.

You can go to the final battle frame one and be instantly KO'd.

It would be funny if they did it like Breath of the Wild and you also have to fight all the bosses you skipped.

The formula that allowed underleveled characters to shoot up to the level of the enemies vanquished in one or two battles flat, while the growth of aptly leveled characters halts until stronger enemies appear. You know, the really fucking awesome formula that neutralized any need to grind and ensured swapping characters in the team was easy peasy? That made exploring fun alongside the bribery system?

Hey, you know what other JRPG series does that?

Fighting random encounters costs you a precious, unrenewable resource.

Oh I see, it's actually Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

  3. I saw some strangers get married today, it was pretty nice. Or rather the wedding was in public and I happened to be in the general vicinity at the time, so whether that counts as "seeing" is open to debate.

In hindsight, Super Mario 64 DS feels like a strange game. Not just because it's Mario's premier 3D game on a portable console, but it also added a decent amount of new content. Could you imagine if Super Mario Odyssey got an updated version that added three new characters and 220 new Moons to collect? Wario is also playable, which is unusual because it's the only mainline Mario where that's the case. Since Luigi was playable, there were rumors about Waluigi being a secret character instead.

It was good, I enjoy the fact that cats auto-revive upon death as long as they have lives left in the Shrek universe (though it didn't share as much continuity with the Shrek series as one might expect, or its predecessor for that matter). I'm glad that I understand all the memes now.

I'm spending most of my time bumbling around rather than progressing the plot. In this case, riding on Dinraal made traveling the Depths much easier.

Also, I saw the funny movie where a cat faces his mortality. I would've liked to see more of Wolf but I understand that giving him more screentime might undermine how menacing his few appearances are.

  6. Technically the answer is Animal Crossing, because it already exists. Though I don't expect it to get a non-Japanese film anytime soon because it doesn't really have a plot.

I think Kirby has the biggest "popularity vs. workability" ratio, but Splatoon could work with a "group of Inklings try to make it big in the Turf Wars and foil an Octarian plot in the process" plot. I'll give Pikmin some credit as well, because making Pikmin a household name is probably Miyamoto's goal in life. Star Fox gets a shoutout because Miyamoto is invested in that series as well (though probably not to Pikmin's extent) and could easily translate to an animated movie, while Metroid would be the logical next choice for a live-action movie.

Basically, I think Kirby would make the most sense but I wouldn't be surprised the rest of the series I mentioned got something at some point in the future.

It's hard to imagine what any generic Zelda movie would look like when it's a brand not nearly as commercialized and many games have completely different aesthetics.

"Generic Zelda" would probably be A Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time inspired with some Breath of the Wild for aesthetics. Or it'll be Smash Bros. inspired and Ganondorf will hit Link with a Falcon Punch.

I don't know, if I was Peter Jackson I'd probably be a bit tired of making epic fantasy movies after the Hobbit trilogy. Sadly New Zealand will have to go without a boost to tourism for now.

  9. Hateno Village must face its greatest challenge yet... mayoral elections! Now we just need Olivier to show up to ease tensions between the opposing sides. Though Ganondorf kind of sounds like Olivier in this game, now that I think about it.

Took it straight from the Portuguese (yes, them, they used to call it, or write it at least, as Pan during those times before changing it, apparently) and didn't made up a word for it later on. No, just kept using Pan.

Loanwords are fairly common. "Karaoke" is Japanese and means "empty orchestra".

Did you know? The phrase "loan translation" is a loan translation from the German Lehnübersetzung. "Loanword" is not a loanword, but it is another loan translation from German (Lehnwort this time). "Calque", another term for loan translation, is a loanword from French meaning "imitation".

  11. I tried to be clever and headed to the Lost Woods after the Wind Temple to see if anything interesting is there, but it appears to be locked off by plot progress. It's a shame that you can't go straight to the final boss this time, the game is ruined! You can't activate the tower either, I assume it'll be available after finishing every dungeon.

I guess they wanted to have the possibility of four Little Timmies playing together in baby mode. But at that point, you might as well have a toggle and let whoever play as whoever. As you said, options.

But hey, they're getting there. It took them until the Switch re-release of New Mario U to realize that, hey, players appreciate not being forced to be Mario if they're playing solo. Nintendo learns in intervals of 20 years, let's give them some time.

In the case of Nabbit and the Yoshis not taking damage, I think it's partially to balance them being unable to use powerups.

Reminds me of when my friends all wanted to play as someone other than Mario, so they had him float in a bubble the whole time whenever I wasn't around to play as him.

  12. Now dig on this

I have cleared Tears of the Kingdom's Wind Temple, Link is too broke to afford proper cold protection gear (all the Rupees from his last adventure must have been invested in Hyrule's restoration) so I had to make deal with cold protection food instead.

    Spoiler

I liked the Blight Ganons in the previous game but it was nice to get a big cinematic monster battle. Afterwards we receive one of the seven Chaos Emeralds secret stones and Tulin gets a blessing from Rean the Sage of Wind. Though by the same token, I have to make a joke about Tulin being Kloe as well. There are six sages, including Zelda as the Sage of Time, though I'm not sure if the sixth is Rauru again or someone else. There's also the fact that Zelda sent herself back in time somehow, hence why she's the subject of the flashbacks again; I like how their locations are telegraphed by the geoglyphs this time. I like how the flashbacks additionally show Ganondorf's rise to power, but it seems like he won't show up in the present again until the final battle.

It's mentioned that Zelda in the present acts rather strangely and even her horse is spooked by her. Clearly "Zelda" is actually Ganondorf is disguise.

Also, Zelda found a shiny gold horse between games, in addition to the white one you can get in the previous game (and the horses you got in BotW carry over to TotK, which was a pleasant surprise). I intended to name it Aurum, but one of the autofill words was Aureole and I liked that better. Besides referring to a halo of light surrounding a holy person, fitting for a horse belonging to Zelda, it is coincidentally the name of an actual racehorseIt's also an overpowered ability in Xenoblade 3 and similarly named to a legendary Fire Emblem tome, among other things.

Behind the scenes stuff is always fascinating. I also think it's interesting how both times David Tennant has shot his into-regeneration scenes, he wasn't there with the preceding actor (he's apparently never met Christopher Eccelston though he has met and worked with Jodie Whittaker before).

It is mildly bothersome how David Tennant is both the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors, even if they are technically different incarnations that just happen to look the same. It's like how Grover Cleveland is both the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. Though the existence of the War Doctor means the numbering was already rather inconsistent.

  14. Having spent most of my time in Tears of the Kingdom bumbling around so far, I eventually made my way to the Great Plateau because I recall Armagon saying it's a good idea.

    Spoiler

I bumbled around in the Depths on a whim and somehow found the Autobuild ability, which I assume is what Armagon was referring to. I wonder if there are other areas where you can also get it, or if this is the only location? Getting it this early in the game will be quite useful, though I'm still not fully sure how it works. I used it to get to Rito Village, at any rate.

And somehow... Master Kohga returned. Him using a vehicle to fight is fun, I can't wait to face him in a mecha battle later.

I plan on visiting each area in the opposite order as I did in BotW, so I'll visit the Rito first and then the Gorons -> Gerudo -> Zora. I also fought a Gleeock, it did not go well.

    WQ9UdBS.jpg

Hmm, Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks... different from what I expected. It must be one of those new Wonder Effects. Not to mention, they even included gloom from the hit game Pikmin 4. I look forward to seeing the deep lore connections between Ganondorf and the Smoky Progg.

  18. Trails into Reverie has the true final boss of all time.

    Spoiler

Falcom thought it would be funny to close off the first half of the series by making you fight Trails to Azure's final boss again. Technically it is slightly less cheap than Azure Demiourgos, but compensates by having much more health (three million in total, counting its three phases together) and frequently acting five or six times in a row.

On my first try of the final phase Demiourgos immediately wiped half of my party before they could even do anything, so the rest of the battle was fought by McBurn with Elie, Alisa, and Emma as support. They did respectably, even though I lost. The second try went better on account of having more than half of my party to use; halfway though I got tired of how long it was taking, so Azure Feathers + Rean/McBurn/Crow S-craft spam amended that. I didn't trust the boss to not have an automatic game over attack immediately once it gets to low health (again), so I used Azure Feathers again and Lloyd's S-craft to not take any chances. Ebon Crest is also your friend, for the uninitiated.

The game isn't completely finished once you've done that, since there's still one last Daydream.

    Spoiler

    That is, the Daybreak-setup Daydream! It's actually a three-in-one.

Rean fights some ninjas, now my life is complete. He also runs into Mia from Fire Emblem, who cuts his sword in half but is still pretty friendly. Rean realizes that he must continue his training before he appears in the next arc.

Gigachad Renne responds to a horrible rich guy by getting his dad kicked out of government. She also accidentally becomes student council president in the process, now she knows how Ash feels. And Zemuria will soon face its biggest threat yet... legal battles between corporations!

The last one focuses on a new character, though her existence was alluded to beforehand. Zin is back too, remember him? Elaine contemplates her dreams and where her life is taking her, laments the loss of her relationship with her childhood friend, solves a criminal case, and fights... someone who will probably be important later. Aside from the last two things, she's just like me. Anyway, she ends up accepting the promotion to A-rank, matching Sara's record as the youngest A-rank bracer.

And oh no, she's... well we don't actually see her face, but she's probably hot. I was waiting for Van to show up so I could say "why is Sonic the Hedgehog as a human in this game?" but he didn't physically appear, darn.

When I first saw it, I thought "Return to the Garden" was part of the daydream and not just a way to return to the Reverie Garden. It's not my fault there's an organization actually called "the Garden"...

It only took almost two years since I started Trails in the Sky, but I'm finally caught up. Now I can finally play this Sporcle quiz (I got 293/298). I wonder what to do now...

Also, I can't believe I finished four Trails games before Armagon finished Atelier Ryza 3.

This was interpreted as me hating Eirika and wanting to take away her plot importance and give it to a dude. Which I'll admit, it hurt a bit to see. I get where they were coming from, but it wasn't my intention at all. The rest was basically just marvelling at the hack's chaos and treating me like a Kaga-tier madman, which I'm fine with.

Wait a minute, I thought your hack was about The Binding Blade? Unless you made another one.

Hah! Touché. But hey, it's not like I'm the biggest fan of Book 2's deus ex machinas either. Camus alone is already pretty silly with all his floating, but then Michalis also comes back to life, only to unceremoniously die again at the end? Interesting.

I await the long-time-coming sequel to Mystery, where Michalis returns and dies again during the ending.

As an aside I had a thought about this concerning Dorothea the other day and how her whole deal in Three Houses is that she's afraid for being only liked because of superficial reasons and she'll lose companionship with age once she loses her beauty and voice.

...And it's like, in a game with a 5 year timeskip. TH had one hell of an opportunity to follow through on that. Could you imagine a post TS war scarred unconventionally attractive Dorothea who lost both her looks and her voice as fuck you towards any player who only romanced her in the beginning because of those things.

Now I'm imagining someone playing Three Houses blind, and they're really excited to see the students all grown up, and then Dorothea shows up inexplicably looking just like Palpatine. Though you can't S-support her until the game is over, so it's not like you can romance her beforehand.

Though I loathe the idea of replacing Allegra Clark, timeskip Dorothea can be voiced by Danny DeVito.

At least there's an attempt made there. Harold just got renamed Arthur and they called it a day without even bothering to ctrl+f the list of FE characters that Nintendo totally has.

At least there are no other FE characters named Harold... wait.

  21. I've finished Trails into Reverie's last "normal" daydream, which was very good (though I lack any no-context images to share from it). I'll get to the actual end of the Reverie Corridor later, but for now I have some unsorted musings about the future of the Trails series.

    Spoiler

As of Reverie we have seen 4/7 Sept-Terrions, 11/22 (presumably) Enforcers, 3/7 Anguis (I still miss Lianne), and 5/12 Dominions. And 1/4 S-rank bracers, still. Maybe the other three are just Cassius in different disguises?

Kondo said after CSIV that there were three more arcs planned, which makes sense because that's the number of Sept-Terrions left. After Calvard, one arc will probably be set in the East and the other will be around Leman and Arteria. Since the church will likely be central to the endgame, Arteria will probably be visited last.

My completely unfounded theory is that the new Seventh Anguis will be revealed in Daybreak 3 (and might be a character introduced in Daybreak beforehand), while the Fifth Anguis will appear in the following arc. The First will probably be saved for last, regardless of whether or not he's Nielsen. I would assume the Sept-Terrion of Time would be saved for last as well, but the other higher element Sept-Terrions were covered already so I'm not sure about that.

I wonder how many of these predictions will be right ten years from now...

This is like my hot writing take but I don't care if you have to asspull out of it, do not end your story on a bleak note under any circumstance.

I think prequels can work as an exception. Torna: The Golden Country and Revenge of the Sith have bleak endings, but it's more acceptable because we know the heroes will set things right eventually.

I'm not sure why this topic is about Awakening because if it was setting up a bleak ending, there wouldn't be so many friendship speeches.

I don't get the obsession with taking their revivals into account with the rest of the plot or the claims of them "ruining the story", either. They're very clearly non-canon, pseudo-postgame extras. As far as I'm concerned, Emmeryn died when she did - the other thing was just a fun "what if" scenario.

My favorite clearly non-canon, pseudo-postgame extra was when Camus survived being defeated by Marth and somehow floated across the sea to a different continent. Because if one were to think about it, Gaiden is basically Shadow Dragon's postgame.

Somebody's streaming my hack. I will shill them so I can shill myself in a roundabout way. Which is to say, click here plz

I was going to ask why you made Jahn so weak that even generic enemies can annihilate him, but it turns out the player and enemy colors are switched. A main character being incredibly weak would fit the Binding Blade experience however.

Just got a video on my recommended feed and discovered through it that all this time, there was a F-Zero GX cup I hadn't unlocked. Turns out you get the AX cup by beating all the other cups on master.

Did you get the AX characters already? The world needs more of funny taxi alien PJ.

They're really making Peter Parker go through the Eren Yeager "nooo I don't want Mikasa to be with another man" arc lmaoooooooo.

Genuinely who is this for? We really about to see Peter Parker and MJ fight each other, like in an actual super battle.

One More Day and it's consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Punished "Venom" Peter is just mad at the writers, can you blame him?

Normally I'd assume these are alternate universe Spider-Man and Mary Jane, but you can never be too sure with comics...

    Thank you

Though I only have two characters left to get, I'd prefer if gold sealing stones were more common in the postgame. It really is Xenoblade 2 all over again!

Even when I do get the last characters, I still have to view the last two/three Daydreams and finish the True Reverie Corridor, so it's not like I'll be done soon anyway.

Oh man, I wish they added Veyle and Lilith before they ditched Dragonween (preferably together as a harmonic).
