  1. Since I'm winding down with Trails into Reverie and Pikmin 4, I'm in the mood to get Tears of the Kingdom... soonish. I'm not sure when I'll decide to get it though perhaps after I actually get every character in Reverie, maybe.

That thing I think I've seen a few Falcom fans asking for a sequel to (although I think I've seen more comments thinking Falcom's next game announcement not Daybreak 3 will be a Tokyo Xanadu 2).

That's because Falcom needs to continue the trend of releasing a Xanadu game every year that ends in a 5. Apparently there's some other stuff suggesting Tokyo Xanadu 2 will happen sooner or later, but I'm not an expert on that subject.

This fucking show man. Only Doctor Who can take something from like half a century ago and make a new plot point out of it.

To be fair, Trails would probably do the same thing if it lasted that long.

Maybe Marvel and DC or a long-running film franchise like James Bond and Godzilla could do something similar. I doubt Doctor Who's original creators expected that it would still be ongoing 60 years later, even if it went on hiatus from 1989 to 2005, which is quite impressive.

Does Destoroyah being created from the Oxygen Destroyer count as a new plot point? Though Godzilla as a franchise was only around 40 years old at the time.

You can't tell due to the image's angle, but they're wearing towels. Estelle is at the other end of the hot spring, though she's talking with someone else so she doesn't hear Joshua and Cassius's conversation.

Trails has one documented case of someone actually being naked in a hot spring, but obviously it happened offscreen.

Trails into Reverie: A Look on the Bright Side was a good Daydream, but I can't talk about it without spoiling what happened six games ago...

    Spoiler

Though Renne was adopted into the Bright family a few games back, it's nice that her relationship with Cassius finally got to be explored. Seeing Cassius be a goofy dad again was also a treat, since he was all business during the previous game.

    qaKWflG.jpg

    Also, he really wants grandkids.

Besides that, Reverie has finally remembered that gold sealing stones exist. Fortunately, the game was nice enough to give me the postgame character first. Technically speaking, talking about them would also be a spoiler.

  8. After fighting the Wind Fish from Link's Awakening at the end of the fourth stratum, Trails into Reverie's secret ending is unlocked. It should be pretty interesting, given the Wind Fish had over a million health.

    Spoiler

It only took over 75 hours for the character on the boxart to appear, with the Grandmaster giving a cryptic prophecy that will probably make sense in a few years. The Grandmaster is pretty cute now that we've seen her eyes. I was expecting McBurn's meeting with the Grandmaster to be the secret ending of the previous game rather than this one (but this meeting occurs after Reverie's main plot is over, since McBurn doesn't appreciate Novartis making a copy of him).

McBurn and the Grandmaster talk about some cryptic stuff as Ouroboros members are wont to do, McBurn specifically appears to be important to Ouroboros's plans going forward. It's left ambiguous if a new Seventh Anguis has been recruited at the moment; apparently the Grandmaster has a candidate in mind, but they haven't decided whether or not to join yet (or that's the impression I got from what she said, at least).

It looks like Swin and Nadia's old assassination organization (the Garden, as Other Rean called it) will be important in the future. It might have something to do with the Order of the Moonlight Horse, since the Emperor was familiar with Sharon before.

Lastly, it turns out Calvard's new president is probably evil. I've said it before and I'll say it again, democracy simply doesn't work. Is Liberl the only country to have an arc but not an evil head-of-government? I look forward to ruining his day three or four games from now.

Hopefully I'll obtain the remaining five characters while exploring the rest of the Reverie Corridor... whenever the gold summoning stones actually show up, that is.

    Trails into Reverie ending

    Spoiler

Somehow... Ishmelga returned. Sort of, since he's technically different from the Ishmelga we destroyed in the previous game, even ignoring the fact that he's fused with Rean. Or was he a copy made by Elysium...? Anyway, fighting the ultimate Divine Knight as the final boss was cool, and it was nice to briefly see Valimar and the other Divine Knights again. I like how Rean resolves the situation without thinking of sacrificing himself this time, showing the results of his character arc.

Well boys, we did it, Crossbell is occupied no more. It only took six games... it makes me a little emotional given how long it's taken. Since we don't see Lloyd's speech, I'm guessing he messed it up and had to consoled by Wazy afterwards. Special props to my man Randy for getting with his love interest, I hope to see his and Mireille's kids a few games from now.

Rufus's solution to saving Zemuria from the Retributive Tower was pretty smart. Who would've expected going in that the heroes would save Rufus at the end? (Or more specifically, that they would want to save him.) If only I knew what I was getting into when I first met him in Cold Steel I. Since he's "dead" as far as the rest of Zemuria is concerned, Rufus now gets to be the dad of the Imperial Picnicking Front. It's an appropriate conclusion for him, I think.

In other news, Other Rean predicts that something big and probably apocalyptic will happen three years from now, corresponding with what the Grandmaster said at the end of Cold Steel IV. I can't wait to see what that means three games from now.

And also Anelace showed up in a postgame image and I claaaaaaaaaaapped

Ordinarily I might've had an existential crisis about what to do now, but the game isn't actually over yet. Maybe I should finish Pikmin 4 soon...

To think I grew up with GSC thinking it a perfectly smooth, wonderful experience where almost nothing seemed out of wack. Only to discover that they worked on the game to the last available minute and the final product was built upon a far from solid foundation.

But if you thought it was perfectly smooth (despite development being rather... disorganized?), then surely Game Freak must've done something right.

Some other oddities I like are Umbreon being the only Dark-type available before Kanto, Wooper replacing a Farfetch'd evo at the last minute to the point that its footprint was still in the game, and Dunsparce and Wobbuffet probably being the last Pokémon added (and the latter originating as a Girafarig preevolution, of all things).

Lapras is a cop-out. It's hardly icy, you could make it pure Water quite reasonably.

I've seen speculation that the Ice-type was added late in development, since it's internally listed after most of the other types in the data (except Rock, Bug, Ghost, and Dragon). Dewgong and Cloyster aren't really icy either, and Jynx is probably yuki-onna inspired but could pass as pure Psychic. Aurora Beam was also Water-type at some point in development while Mist and Haze were Normal, so Articuno might've been Water/Flying when it was designed. This is all just speculation, so don't take it at face value.

  13. Godzilla Emblem is real

Or is it more like Godzilla Advance Wars...?

    Trails into Reverie pre-final dungeon

    Spoiler

I can't believe my conspiracy theory of bad ending Rean being the Zeroth's Knight's awakener was right. Or technically not, because he's bad ending Rean possessed by... something. Ishmelga again, maybe? I hear alternate universe antics are all the rage these days.

C's Act IV revealed that the wonkiness of the Great Twilight created a continent-sized AI in the septium veins, hence all the previously unheard of technology being used by the villains. I happen to like godlike AI antagonists, so I'm interested in seeing where this goes. I can't believe Lapis was a chatbot AI all along. Grimwood was arguably better utilized here than he was in Trails to Azure.

With the final chapter upon is, it's time for all 40 characters to unite to liberate the city. It's a cold day in Gehenna when even the Red Constellation is helping the heroes (because Dieter hired them again, to protect Crossbell this time). I'm glad that Fie and Garcia got to talk about Zephyr for a bit, since I've wondered for a while now if they ever met each other.

In the end, C gets to show his character development, Ilya is unbrainwashed after a dance off with Rixia, and Rufus is defeated... though it's a shame that Crossbell happens to be a superweapon magnet, so the game isn't over yet. There's plenty of content to do even after the final dungeon, for one thing.

    Spoiler

    OlMwh3D.jpg

Cedric might not have been C, but I'm glad he got a Daydream to himself. He even gets to be playable for two battles! Getting to see some of the Enforcer training process was interesting, though Shirley's main point was to teach Cedric that he can't rely on his royal status in Ouroboros. Cedric demanding a maid to clean his room and remembering "oh wait, they don't have those here" was pretty funny. Meltgunner is a friend.

For his efforts Cedric is inducted as Enforcer No. XIX by the time of Olivert's wedding, though his title isn't revealed yet. While never explicitly stated, it's likely the numbers reflect the order in which the Enforcers attained that rank. If there will end up being 22 Enforcers in total, that means half have been introduced already (0, I, II, VI, VIII, IX, X, XIII, XV, XVII, and XIX). Getting roughly one new Enforcer per game, as has been the case since Cold Steel I, is a decent rate if Falcom wants to introduce them all by the series' end. I think the Calvard arc continues that trend from what I've heard. And of course, there are still four unseen Anguis as well.

General thoughts on Trails into Reverie up to mid-Act IV

    Spoiler

After how long Cold Steel IV was, I appreciate that Reverie's plot moves at a faster pace (mostly because all the side content is in the Reverie Corridor). The story is pretty interesting, and I like the mystery as to who the villain is, Rufus aside... though I suppose most Trails games have their villains be a mystery at first, and it takes some time for Sky FC to establish that it even has a main villain.

Anyway, there are now robot doppelgangers. Technically they existed as early as Sky SC, but they are much more elaborate this time. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but it fits what was already established pretty well. It makes more sense than when Xenoblade 3 did the same thing, at least.

Also introduced is Not-Xenogears, which is an eighth Divine Knight despite that supposedly being impossible. And here I thought Rean's hair color antics were resolved in the previous game... My conspiracy theory is that it's piloted by alternate universe Rean from CSIV's bad ending, somehow.

Getting to use so many characters is good, the revolving casts in Lloyd and Rean's routes help give everyone some attention. Even Arios and Towa get to be playable for more than ten minutes! And of course, more Duvalie is good. The most recent character I summoned was Victor; I wasn't sure if he would be playable this time because he shares his crafts with Laura, but I'm glad to see him. I'm a bit disappointed that Schera missed out on being playable again, though at least there's an explanation for it.

Lastly the Daydreams are fun, it's enjoyable seeing what everyone is up to after the events of the previous game. The foundations of the lore have mostly been established by now, so I shouldn't expect too much lore from most of them. I'm particularly fond of "To Your Blessed Future", Olivert and Schera being a proper couple was cute and I like how Bleublanc is basically just friends with the heroes at this point. We also got to hear from Aina again and the age-old question of whether or not Olivier actually played in Heimdallr's opera house was answered.

  22. Trails into Reverie has revealed C's identity, I find it hard to believe I remained (mostly) unspoiled for almost two years. As for what I think:

    Spoiler

I can't believe he turned out to be Louie from Pikmin! Just kidding, the actual answer is in the spoiler below:

    Spoiler

I can't believe he turned out to be Chris Pratt! Just kidding, the actual answer is in the spoiler below:

    Spoiler

I can't believe he turned out to be [REDACTED]! I'm not really sure how you're supposed to figure it out on your own, since there's basically no foreshadowing until two minutes before the reveal (unless you recognize his voice). I assumed for the past two years that he would be Cedric, and I would've liked that outcome, but Kurt probably would've been around for the reveal in that case (and him joining Ouroboros means he'll be important again eventually). His actual identity was my second choice, however. What does it say about me that I considered the possibility of doppelganger shenanigans? I wonder why Falcom picked him as the third protagonist... Still, it's an interesting development, and I'll see how this redemption arc goes.

It'll be a bit silly when Lloyd says "we gotta beat [REDACTED]!" in the main plot while presumably chilling with him in the Reverie Garden.

    He's so cool.

He will defeat the villains by stealing all their food supplies.

Finally, now I can tell Sooks not to read something. Anyone else who doesn't want to be spoiled shouldn't read it either. With that out of the way, maybe I'll goof around in the Reverie Corridor when the opportunity arises...

Otherwise people would riot when their first pulls are Alfin, Celine, Elise…

Clearly rerolling for Anton is the optimal decision.

Do you know what game first adds a text history/log? For this VN series I hope it does get added at some point.

That would also be the fifth game. Or The Great Ace Attorney for you, since you'll probably play it first.

You cant actually do this if you get the orb and then save after, you need to reset before you got it, despite what the game tells you.

The game tells you to reset to before you got the summon stone, since the result is fixed once you get it. Or you could wait until you get another gold summoning stone, which resets the contents of the ones you already have.

    A localizator's go-to for the Osaka accent/dialect.

Sometimes the localizers get bold and give them Scottish accents instead.

The True Reverie Corridor looks interesting to explore, though I won't go too deep into it just yet. Daydreams by beloved... I'm not sure if they're obtained in a random order, but I'm looking forward to seeing what they're like.

Besides the Daydreams, there are also gold summoning stones that let you obtain new characters. Since it's randomly decided which characters you get, I can't believe they added a gacha to Trails. I made a joke about Sky the 3rd having Xenoblade 2's summoning mechanic when I first played it, but Reverie is actually closer to that (if there were only a dozen Core Crystals and you only got rare Blades, that is). I wonder when I will get KOS-MOS... I like how the game suggests resetting and summoning again if you don't like who you get.

For those who might be curious, the first character I summoned was

    Spoiler

Roselia. For now, she'll be able to eat as much junk food as she wants before Emma gets here.

That’s actually cool. I should probably stop questioning every facet of a legal system I know nothing about, but now I’m curious…

To be fair, the game's writer didn't know much about the legal system by his admission. The cases are mostly an excuse to solve mysteries.

It’s kind of an issue that when moving between places in the investigating section, you have to move through places in the order you actually would walking around to get there, even tho it’s just a menu. (Like if you wanted to go into a trailer that was in a specific studio, you need to open up the menu, press the studio button, then open the menu again and press the room button.) Before it didn’t really matter cause you would only go to a place once or twice but here with a lot of back and forth it gets annoying. It’s all the same menu anyway, so why couldn’t it have been one menu? But regardless, onto the rest of the trial.

That will get fixed... eventually. Starting in the fifth game, I think...

No yeah, that's true, but the execution's just kind of lame. A side effect of being such an early case, I'm afraid. There are endearing idiot villains later in the series, but this one's just a boring idiot.

Turnabout Sisters was the first case written (The First Turnabout was made later, because Takumi thought 1-2 was too complicated for the introductory case), so I cut it some slack for that reason.

Haha, reminds me of SRW 30 having a character buy/geek at SRW 300.

We know that Pac-Man is canon to SRW, at least.

Pretty much, yes. Most people don't find it so interesting that a ghost wins the case for Phoenix because he refuses to turn around a piece of paper. Not to mention how much the guy is hyped up as totally invincible, completely beyond what one'd expect of case 2 of game 1, and then... Well, he's about as competent as you'd expect the villain of case 2 of game 1 to be, which falls flat after all the build up. That, and the case is pretty critical for the series, despite being basically just another tutorial.

Eh, I kind of like that Redd White acts untouchable but is a complete moron on the stand. He's probably so confident that he didn't consider what to do if he was ever put on the spot. Or maybe I already assume successful people are secretly stupid, maybe.

They could’ve been worse and had him go “hello, I am Phoenix Wright, a lawyer fresh out of law school after getting my bachelor’s degree. I’m 17.”

Yeah, you won't get a protagonist like that for another few games.
