One thing I think would be cool to see, whether in Round 2 or Round 3, would be matches against the original Paper Mario partners - Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Watt, Sushie, and Lakilester. There could also be rematches with some Paper Mario bosses. As an extra bonus, these battles could use remixes of music from Paper Mario.

I'm a fan of all these! The Goombella tattles are the double cherries on top.

I was actually thinking that "Round 3" would be something of a "Boss Rush", bringing back bosses from Paper Mario 64 alongside those in TTYD. I've waffled back and forth between keeping them at their original power level, or bumping them up to a more appropriate challenge level. I'm definitely leaning towards the latter now, even if it makes things awkward with the Tattle Log (like, would Hooktail need a second entry?).

That said, I think bringing back the OG partners would fit great in a "Round 2" context. I'm still trying to think of a story to tie it all together. Maybe something with Mr. L? I haven't played Super Paper Mario yet, but I like the idea of giving Luigi an actual story role. Also, his costume is perfect for a "masked fighter" in the Glitz Pit.

Incidentally, I would love to see Sir Swoop in battle finally. He would have made a great candidate for Bonus Optional Party Member as well. Unfortunately, healing yourself when you attack wouldn't be a unique thing to him in TTYD specifically. Flurrie's Lip Lock is absolutely broken. Pierces defense, does more damage than her basic attack, and heals for the full amount so she can continue tanking hits from the front. Like attacking and using a Mushroom in the same turn, and it only costs 3FP. I think it even allows her to damage enemies with spikes on top that she can't normally body slam. Best 3 shine sprites you could spend. Flurrie is also flying, so she'd share in his immunity to Quake attacks, in the rare event an enemy shows up with that item.

Since Sir Swoop is a basic Swooper, he can't actually drain HP. If he were made a partner, though, he'd probably have such a move. That's actually another thread I had in mind - coming up with an "Eighth Partner" for the TTYD remake.

...Oh, so that's where I got the idea from.

Aren't Geno and Mallow owned by Square Enix or something?

Anyway, uh... what game is "Super Star"? "Mario Party Superstars"? "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga"? "Super Mario All-Stars"? "Kirby Super Star"? "Mario Kart: Super Circuit"? "Paper Mario: Sticker Star"? Did I miss anything?

presume Darna is actually an unexplained independent city-state. Reliant somewhat on trade, and heavily on religious tourism aka "pilgrimage" to what is likely the holiest site in Jugdral that everybody or at least most people recognize (the Crusader faith being international, whereas local deities are just that). And it's that holiness plus location in the desert that guarantees Darna's independence.

That would make sense. At first I was thinking "Grannvale has the most Crusader lineages, so of course they'd want to control Darna". But then again, almost half of the lines settled outside of Grannvale. So they let it exist as an independent religious polity. By violating that neutrality, Isaach (via Rivough) became a threat. Hence the war.

...Wait. Suppose Manfroy orchestrated the invasion of Darna. And we know Sandima was advising the King of Verdane. Did Manfroy intentionally start two wars in order to get Sigurd to flush out the girl with dark dragon blood from the forest that was protecting her? Was this intended to be some 4D chess mastery?

Sophara does look pretty defensible. -But then centrality and defensibility often aren't the determinants for a capital. Washington DC once was fairly central -but how often does being coastal help with defense instead of hurt it? Capitals naturally attract commerce yeah, but it's also been the norm to place them where commerce already thrives.

Thinking on it, being surrounded by mountains might actually be a disadvantage. If flying enemies swoop in from Silesse or Thracia, then your forces become trapped like rats. And you can only expect aid from one direction. Obviously ballistae can ameliorate this issue, but that's true if you're on an empty plain, too.

Now, I could understand literally putting your capital atop the mountains, for the avoid boost it'll give your defenders. But in a valley, surrounded by mountains on three sides? You're just asking to have wyverns ruin your day.

Galzus is far too bad ass to be prologue fodder, though a boss for that first wave wouldn't be without merit. And since I deem Galzus too impresive, I nominate Shiva, another blackhaired sword fighter. What's funny about him is that we know where's from, a place called Savan...which doesn't seem to be anywhere on the Jugdral map and is only mentioned once by Shiva and one in his character ending.

Shiva would be cool to see here, as he definitely gives off an Isaachian vibe. The Killing Edge doesn't exist yet, but we can compensate by giving him the Critical skill. Instant utility for Nihil on the Sword Twins!

An enemy seizure is fine. Just...don't give them anything to seize for a game over. As I said, they never actually go for your castle in this chapter. And if one absolutely needs to exist in some form, then either make the aforementioned church tile count or, if it needs to be roughly castle shaped, stick it on a load of sea tiles that the enemy can never get to. The Return staff though...yeah, that might be a tad bit harder to code around, especially since it auto puts you inside a castle to ensure it's not putting a character to an already occupied space.

Perhaps in the remake, they could dustinguish between various sizes of Castle? Tirnanog could have a small one, as could Orgahill and Yied. Most would be medium, while national capitals - like Augusty and Belhalla - would have particularly large ones. I don't envision a real gameplay difference, outside of maybe impacting how many tiles they take up on the world map.

  3. 12 hours ago, Jotari said:

Beginning this chapter with Seliph and friends deployed already around a church tile would be more than satisfactory for gameplay and plot.

I think it's just a matter of "where would the Return Staff send you?" and "what enemy seizure would be a Game Over confition?" The Return Staff always sends its target to the home castle. Likewise, an enemy seizing the home castle causes a game over. They might not be able to suspend those conditions, even for one map.

It is mentioned by Ayra that Rivough was the one that attacked Darna. Probably without evidence I'm guessing the result of Manfroy's evil manipulation, but as with Agustria, rooted in some kind of internal discontent. And then King Manaan destroyed Rivough (despite marrying his older daughter to Rivough's ruler) before Big Man' had him assassinated. Rivough just so happens to the Issach region bordering the Yied, so it's possible that Grannvale began receiving some kind of assistance from dissenters there even before Issach as a whole was conquered. ...Although we don't know if the King of Rivough's presumed discontent with the King of Greater Issach ran deep among the Rivoughans, or if it was just another Guy At The Top vs. Guy At The Top squabble.

Interesting. Perhaps that's why Dannan rules from Rivough, rather than the traditional capital of Isaach? Maybe the citizenry would be slightly more amenable there. Although, I wonder - why did Rivough attack Dahna? If their grievance was with Mananananana, I don't see how attacking Grannvale helps.

Harold and Schmidt might be from Isaach. At least, if we're to get that remake they should receive redesigns that make them look like they're from Isaach (they do both wield axes though).

Since Schmidt looks identical to Slayder, I'm assuming that he's Slayder's son. Or maybe nephew.

As for Harold, he could be from Isaach... or Augustria... or Silesse... or Thracia... it's a pretty common mug!

    11 hours ago, Jotari said:

Galzus is said to hate Isaach and is collaborating with the Empire in Thracia 776, though he is the prince of Rivough so might just be a guy at the top situation. Though...coming to think of it, why does the empire have Galzus working as a mercenary in Thracia. Why not install him as a puppet ruler in Isaach? Are they afraid he'd grow too powerful and popular? Because given his rough personality type, the idea of him charming people and stirring up rebellion is pretty funny. Hell the idea of him just living in a castle and having servants and stuff at all seems like it'd be at odds with his whole tough guy schitck.

New idea: replace Harold with Galzus in the remake. Surely he's not too strong to be the first boss faced by Seliph, right?

On a side note, it'd be nice to see an explicitly Isaachian Myrmidon miniboss leading the first charge to Tirnanog. Maybe the Sword Twins would get a battle conversation with him. Of course, if he doesn't fight for the Empire, his family dies.

I 100% forgot that you can get the Brave Axe in (the first chapter of!) Gen 2, I guess that's how much of an impression the axe bros made on me.  I do think Lex isn't super special without the Brave Axe - since he can't double without it, he can't really OHKO things, so he's more like Alec and Noishe, albeit with better def and much faster leveling.  I've never skipped the Brave Axe event, though, so maybe I'm underrating him.

I missed the Brave Axe my first playthrough, and Lex was still one of my best units. The key is, Defense is actually a super important stat in this game. Even if Lex isn't hitting as often or as reliably as Alec and Finn, he's taking hits far better than they do. Pretty obvious frontliner, alongside Quan and Sigurd.

"Pokémon"? Which one? We've had quite a few of them on the Switch, but none just named "Pokémon".

Also, Greninja and Incineroar are odd picks, when their debut games were on the 3DS. My picks would be Hisuian Decidueye (from Legends Arceus) and Cinderacci (from Sword & Shield). I do like the Gholdengo pick. Lucario works with BDSP, Mewtwo and Pokemon Trainer (based on Chase/Elaine, maybe?) would work via Let's Go, and Pikachu is... yeah the series mascot.

Midir as a father obviously isn't the greatest for Lana, leaving her with a worse Mag base than Aideen (13) and basically the same growth rate (30%). However, inheritance makes sure that she starts with (almost) all the good staves, so that lower Mag stat doesn't matter quite as much. Honestly, item inheritance seems the main reason why Lana is better than her substitute at all.

Yeah, even the worst Lana (uh, Chulainn!Lana I guess?) will be better than the best Mana. Getting stacked with Staves from the get-go is a huge deal, especially when she can't Arena her way into buying anything.

Speaking of Roger-Roger - any preferences? I honestly don't care too much - if I recall, Johan doesn't really have the same power that Lex had, while Johalvier has better combat (well, I don't have to "recall" anything here, the base stats are right there) but the bad ol' "No Horse" syndrome.

Interestingly, in at least two regards, the brothers are "convergent". Johan has a much better Speed growth, while Johalvier's Skill growth is superior. Not that either stat is super-important to them, as they can neither double nor crit. That said, Johalvier will always be slightly ahead in HP, Strength, and Defense, while the other stats... who even cares?

Between the two of them... yeah, I'll go to bat for Johalvier. He's the only playable Axe infantry in the game, and one of a handful of units to gain access to the Bow Arena. With Johan, you get "Lex, but worse". With Johalvier, you get something entirely unique and novel. The higher movement and Cantoer that comes from having a horse? Who needs it! At the end of the day, though, either one is usable. Not great, not even "good", really, but perfectly usable.

We also can take a look at King Dannan already - pretty significant increase in power compared to his lackeys (or his sons). If only we had somebody with a weapon that deals a lot of damage against armoured units...

Dannan's presence makes a big statement about the "power creep" in Gen II. He's basically on-par with Chapter 3 Chagall (also a level 25 Baron), but Chagall shows up halfway through the generation, rather than in the very first chapter.

That said, Oifey does seem very competent, with his stand-out bases being his Def and (to a lesser extend; Paladin has a class base of 5) Mag. His growths are reminiscent of gen 1 characters - almost identical to Alec if he had minor Baldur blood himself, actually - so I still expect child characters with their inflated growths to surpass him eventually, but maybe this is a BlaBla!Marcus situation that Oifey finds himself in. Just not a Seth situation.

Me, hyping up Oifey to non-FE4 players: "You don't understand! This guy is so good, he can double AND crit!"

I like the BlaBla-Marcus comparison. That sounds about right. Legit the best unit in your army when you get him, and pretty much always relevant. As for later on, I'll let you be the judge of his performance.

At first, this sounds like a morally conflicted statement. But it's actually a subtle acknowledgement of the weapon triangle, and the relative merits of their weapon types. The brothers can't fight Larcei, not for lack of trying, but because their Hit rate is too low.

4 hours ago, Saint Rubenio said:

For the record, there's a way to get both. They're gotten when you seize whichever castle turns on you when you recruit one of the brothers. The others turn green, so you can't seize the castle... Unless a certain group of enemies seize it, then you can seize it back from them and get Julia both her tomes. I believe that's how it went? Your call if that's too tedious to do or not.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to recruit either brother and still have Isaach Castle turn red. Since it's poorly-guarded, and directly between Rivough and your own army. Either way, you definitely want to retake Isaach Castle for the Nosferatu. Aura weighs Julia down so much that she literally gets doubled by Fenrir Dark Bishops. Yes, somehow, Aura and Fenrir both have 20 Weight.

...I am curious: has anyone actually gotten both tomes before? I know that it's possible to get both castles to turn red, and then re-Seize them. But does that actually enable Seliph and Julia to have the same conversation twice? I assumed that, once you have the conversation, it won't happen again. Hm, might be a thing to try in my current playthrough...

    4 hours ago, RPGuy96 said:

They both suck - Lex is good because of the Brave Axe (and to a lesser extent Paragon and minor Neir), but he died with it, presumably.  I don't care which one you get, just make sure that...

Not a strong case here. Lex doesn't get the Brave Axe until basically the end of chapter 1, and he's still pretty good before that. If he died with it, the game doesn't seem to acknowledge it, because Schmidt drops the very same Brave Axe before the chapter ends. I like to challenge myself to have Johan or Johalvier land the finishing blow, so they don't have to buy it. No, the only thing Johan doesn't have, that Lex does, is Paragon. That, and blue hair.

He is obviously never going to use that Thief Sword. Though I suppose it would it would be a fun troll move if he did. For the record, enemies can in fact steal from you. Don't let the fact that you fought a Thief Fighter in Chapter 5 lure you into a false sense of security. It just that it won't work in the arena.

Enemy Thieves are super underutilized in this game. I think you only fight, like, one of them in the field. It's Radiant Dawn, all over again, for the very first time. At the very least, the Orgahill Pirate Squad should've included a couple Thieves among their ranks.

Geez, the sword twin substitutes really have it rough. I've seen that Creidne has an obscure event to improve her stats, but they overall seem especially bad compared to their counterparts. Larcei and Ulster are even among the easiest kids to find a good dad for, since they both basically want the same things.

They were one of the cases where I gave a "C" grade - the worst possible - to the notion of leaving the mother unpaired. Ayra could marry a plank of wood, and the resulting kids would be better (in gameplay) than Creidne and Croddleban. Even a plank of wood wouldn't take their Nihil and Astra away.

    3 hours ago, ping said:

Yeah, you're right about that. I'd even say that especially the most illegitimate of dynasties are going to be desperate to convince everyone that their being on top is the correct order of being. If it's consensus that the head honcho is only the head honcho because he happened to win a power struggle, that's basically an open invitation for anybody with the means necessary to reopen that struggle.

I've just been reading a book about the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, and... ooh, boy, does it make me think. Like, I'm not gonna say that "Grannvale is Nazi Germany, and Isaach is occupied Czechia", or anything exaggerated like that. But it really gave me a stark reminder of the horrors of occupation. An eerie peace founded upon terror.

...Incidentally, thinking of treacherous monsters like Emanuel Moravec and Karel Curda, I feel like there was a missed opportunity. Namely, including Isaachian collaborators. Either motivated by grievances against the old regime, or - more likely - simply the desire to prosper amidst a scene of suffering. Most of the country would be against them, of course, but it's hard to imagine that Dannan wouldn't try to recruit some local muscle. We don't fight any Isaachians, outside of Ayra herself, and... maybe Lamia's crew? She's a Swordmaster with black hair, so I'm assuming she might be Isaachian. It's hard to imagine House Dozel - one that already lost Rango and Slayder's forces, mind you - having enough manpower to not only hold all of Isaach, but also keep their own territory secure, on their own.

Arthur is also another case where class matters are a bit different for the substitute. Arthur is a standard mage but Amid is a Wind Mage. Amid also becomes a Mage Fighter instead of a Mage Knight. Only way you get a playable male Mage Fighter in this game.

Amid could've actually been kind of cool, if the game would give him access to Elwind. Even if he had to buy it, like Linda does with Thoron. But it doesn't show up until chapter 9, by which point, Arthur and Tinne can already be promoted. Thus totally undermining his "head start" in Wind magic rank.

...Of course, Lewyn!Arthur would still destroy him entirely, but that's its own story.

But for other lacking units, um, Dew is 10 with 99 exp lol~ Sylvia... Okay, to the one person who commented she needs more exp than that, like... How?

Arena'ing, basically. Since the game doesn't spell Miracle out for you, I will. (11 - HP) * 10. This is the Avoid boost provided by Miracle. So, if Sylvia is at 4 HP, she gets an extra 70 Avoid. If she's facing a foe with 70 Hit or less, then she becomes literally untouchable. It may take a while, but she will kill any foe in front of her. I recommend using the Iron Sword, since it's the cheapest to repair.

*Side note: if you get defeated, then go back into the Arena with 1 HP, Miracle won't trigger (although other low-HP skills, like Wrath and Vantage, will). Instead, you need to be clever about it. If a foe does 16 damage to Sylvia, try to go in with 17 health - or just slightly over. That way, you can set up the perfect Miracle scenario.

Hero Mode definitely looks cool. Maybe a bit overtuned in the difficulty, in my opinion. Then again, the base game has become something of a cakewalk, so it's hard to blame them for overcorrecting. Some really interesting things they are doing, in any case. Looking forward to its continuation!

Part of the reason the Glitz Pit can be dull (both its refight campaign, and the actual Chapter 3 campaign) is that it's competing with the Pit of 100 Trials. We already have a side mode of consecutive battles that is far more challenging and has good rewards waiting for players that want to risk it. The Glitz Pit offers no risk (Save Point + Healing in between fights) so the only way it can come out ahead is in its narrative and its potential to surprise us.

Eh... I still think the original gauntlet works pretty well. Although, I see your point. The difficulty definitely isn't on the level of the Pit of 100 Trials - even the first fifty floors. Side note: I did consider a "Glitz Blitz" mode, where the added challenge is, no healing between matchups. Not sure how that would be incorporated, though. The "battle conditions" can affect the challenge too, so, maybe double up on the conditions. I.e. "no jumping" and "defeat within 3 turns". Or maybe throw new ones in, like "No Guarding (including Superguarding)" or "Let your Partner fall in battle." Could shake things up a bit.

For instance, beat up one of these remixed teams and suddenly a new foe steps into the ring like Bowser does in Chapter 3. If I were in charge I'd have Koops' Dad on KP Koopa's team, implying some Mentor/trainee relationship that was just never mentioned up until now. Or cameos from the first game. Lee and Chan, or perhaps Lakilest-I mean Spike he seems like the sort of guy that traveled the world proving himself after the last game. Have some fun with this world-famous arena that draws people from all over - possible even from mario games previously unrelated to paper mario.

Ooh, I like these. Maybe Bombette could join the Bob-omb Squad? Or have Jr. Troopa bust in between matches, for the long-awaited rematch? A lot of possibilities here. I will have to think about incorporating some of them...

...Also, I do think there should be some sort of reward for completing Round 2, but I'm not sure what. A new and unique badge? A powerful item, like Zess Dynamite or the Jelly Ultra? Rawk Hawk as Mario's eighth partner? The "Stranger Sack", which holds 30 items? A lot of possibilities here.

Life Ring has also been a skill in Heroes since about 2017 or 2018, so it's weird to see it here under a different name. What was the decision to make all these rings bands anyway? They're all just Rings in the Japanese, I'm pretty sure, at least I'm pretty sure the Return Ring is a Ring and not a Band in Japanese. Was it to differentiate between stat boosting rings and skill bestowing rings? I'm not sure that's something particularly confusing.

Wasn't the Life Ring Thracia 776's version of the Seraph Robe? Turning these rings that you wear into rings that you... consume, I guess... was pretty confusing.

And yeah, they are all リング (ri-n-gu) in Japanese. Seems like all the stat-boosting ones are referred to as Rings, while the skill-granting ones are alternatively Rings or Bands. Personally, I wouldn't mind if all the 20K ones stay Rings, while the 40K ones are Bands. That way, it's easier to remember how much everything costs.

When Seliph confronts Alvis the thing he says is "Why? Why did you betray my father?" And...honestly...it's actually a great question. Why did Alvis betray Sigurd?

Here's an idea: what if Sigurd wasn't Arvis's target? There's someone far more threatening in his army: Father Claud. "Really, Claud?" you may be wondering. "The man with no movement, skills, or physical durability?" Yes, that Claud. He may lack all those things, but he does have two crucial powers: resurrecting the dead via the Valkyrie Staff, and receiving revelation from Saint Bragi. For all Arvis knows, Claud has already learned that Arvis is working with the Loptyr Cult. So he must die. And he may have informed Sigurd, and his entire cadre. So they must die. As for bringing back the dead - imagine the chaos if Claud were to bring back Prince Kurth. Or Reptor, or Rango. Can he even do any of that? Maybe not, but Arvis doesn't know for sure. Hell - maybe Claud could single-handedly resurrect the fell wyrm, Loptyr. By killing him now, Arvis might actually be frustrating Manfroy pulling a "pro gamer move", if you will.

...Of course, the Battle of Belhalla still happens, even if Claud died already. Still, the argument that Claud revealed sensitive information to Sigurd and company, before dying, is a salient one.

In that context, Alvis bringing Deidre in front of Sigurd makes perfect sense. He wanted to confirm to himself that she truly has forgotten about him. Otherwise he would never find peace of mind.

And... then what? If Deirdre remembers Sigurd, then he's just screwed himself. He can't kill Sigurd - Deirdre would never forgive him. But he can't let Sigurd live, because his survival endangers his marriage to Deirdre. He would've ruined everything for himself.

The upside is... Deirdre doesn't remember Sigurd. Which she already didn't. It's not like, after several years of not mentioning him, and not showing his face, Deirdre's memory would suddenly be jogged, apropos of nothing. And even if it were, that would've happened regardless of being exposed to him. Hell - exposing her to him makes it more likely. She'll have a distinct memory of Sigurd, and she may be able to "connect the dots" to her past life.

Really just comes across as a moment of hubris, that could have ended up really badly for him. If they wanted it to happen - without the risk - they could've just had Arvis mention his marriage to Dierdre without bringing her out. Sure, maybe he wouldn't believe it. But who cares for the thought of a dead man, anyway?

    7 hours ago, ping said:

Because Dew and Aideen are still pretty far apart, I think the quickest way to get Sigurd to receive money for the Tyrfing repair and then back to the frontline is to warp him back with Raquesis and then forward again with Aideen.

I've legit done this before. I hate how, once Sigurd seizes, he blocks the castle gate for everyone else. By Returning him back, I can get my other units in for Arena'ing, or weapon repair, or pawn shop business, or even sitting on the castle for self-healing. Then, once Sigurd is revived the next turn, I warp him straight back to keep going.

...Actually, one more thought I just had. When Sigurd seizes, it would make more sense for him to sit atop the castle, than to stand in its gate. Anyone can sit in the gate. That's nothing new. What's new is, having killed the boss, being able to take their spot. Actually, that's how seizing works in every other title - you kill the boss to vacate the spot, then take that spot. That would signify that Sigurd is distinctly replacing the enemy, and taking control of the castle for himself. "Raising the Blue Banner", if you will. Plus, it would allow his allies to conduct business within the Castle, without any of these Return-Warp strats. There would still be a place for Return-Warp strats - just not this specific one.

Of course, it is difficult for me to view this scene (or any other) as if I wasn't aware of The Spoiler. With that power of prophecy, this seems like grand final example of Sigurd being Sigurd: Honorable. Brave. Simple. Throughout the game, Sigurd has always accepted what is in front of him. Aideen is abducted into Verdane? Simple solution: Invade Verdane. The Verdanians won't stop fighting? Keep advancing. Simple. Eldigan is imprisoned? Invade Agustria. Although the context is different, Sigurd just going along with Aida's explainations seems to gel with that attitude. The explainations are in front of Sigurd, so Sigurd accepts them. Simple.

Solid synopsis. Finally, Sigurd encounters a problem that he can't solve by Seizing.

I love when FE4 does this. The other instance that comes to mind is in the Prologue, when Edain is captured. At first she pulls back and slows them down, then Gandolf says something, and she acquiesces. Really, telling extra bit of story and characterization through little unit sprite movements is super appreciated.

And thus ends the first half of the game.

Congrats on making it! "Six chapters" doesn't sound like a lot, but honestly, it can take as long as a whole 20-some-chapter campaign in other mainline games. Not only due to the hug maps, but to all the micromanagement that goes on. Plus, the lack of "speed up" or "skip phase" options that future games would introduce. I've really enjoyed what you've had to say thus far, and I look forward to how the latter half will turn out.

  11. Ah, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The second entry in the franchise - and, some would say, where it peaked. But I'm not here to debate the relative merits of the titles, nor to dunk on Sticker Star. Rather, I'm capitalizing off of my recent replaythrough of the game - and the fact that we're two months away from the remake. I still think it's a great game - but not a perfect one. What are some things that could be improved by a remake? Here's one of them: The Glitz Pit, Round 2.

Folks who have played the game already probably remember the Glitz Pit, the key setting of chapter 3. But for the uninitiated, just know that it's essentially a wrestling arena. Mario, and his various partners, need to fight against a series of enemies in order to earn the Champ's Belt - and a Crystal Star. While the enemies start easy - literally Goomba-easy - they gradually ramp up in difficulty. Some of the latter foes - like the Tiny Spinies, Crawdaddy, or the Koopinator - might just leave you sweating. It all culminates in an epic grapple with Rawk Hawk, the Champion of the Glitz Pit.

After completing chapter 3, you can return to the Glitz Pit. However, due to an in-narrative glitch or mistake, Mario isn't the champion anymore - rather, he has to climb his way up from the bottom again. So, what new challenges await Mario this time? Well... nothing. The enemies he fights are exactly the same as the first time. Even characters who are added to the roster during the story, such as Sir Swoop and Prince Mush, have absolutely no presence. If you were expecting an extra challenge - or even something new and interesting to discover - you're going to be disappointed.

But... what if that were not the case? What if the Glitz Pit changed, during Mario's comeback tour? Here's what I'm thinking - after Mario completes chapter 3, the Glitz Pit will temporarily close. For certain story reasons, I think this makes sense. So, for the duration of chapter 4, Mario won't have the opportunity to return. However, after completing chapter 4 (for real this time), Mario will receive an email from Jolene, announcing the re-opening of the Glitz Pit. The slots have filled up fast, though, so Mario will have to work his way back up from the bottom. As in the vanilla game, it'd be a totally optional sidequest. But, how to make it rewarding? Why, introduce new enemies with a higher level of difficulty, of course! Maybe some familiar faces as well. After each enemy, I'll list its (HP, Attack, Defense), for added context. As for who those enemies will be? Well, I'm glad you asked.

    19. The Family Goom

    Spoiler

Replacing the Goomba Bros, it's the Family Goom! Goombario, Goombaria, Goompapa, and Goomama. They all have (10, 2, 0), and can double-bonk, but each have a special trait:

Goombario can "Tattle" either Mario or his partner. After being "Tattled", there's a chance that the target's next attack will miss.

Goombaria can "Charge", like Hyper Goombas. This boosts her attack power by 2, for her next attack.

Goompapa can "Multibonk". Each hit will do 2 damage, hitting up to 5 times. Can be interrupted prematurely by a Superguard.

Goomama carries an infinite supply of Mushrooms around. She can heal herself, or an ally, for 5 HP instead of attacking.

    18. Sir Swoop

    Spoiler

This NPC was introduced mid-chapter, and it's a shame we never saw him. As for the contest against him, I see it as being three Swoopers (6, 3, 0), as well as one Swoopula (9, 4, 0), the last of which has a draining effect.

    17. Klub Koopa

    Spoiler

All the grounded Koopas are here, led by King K the KP Koopa (4, 2, 1). There's also Shellshocker the Shady Koopa (8, 3, 1), a Dark Koopa (8, 4, 2), and... Kooper? That's right!

Kooper (15, 3, 1) has his usual Shell Toss attack, along with Fire Shell. This can hit both Mario and his partner, and burn them.

    16: The Flying Spinies

    Spoiler

An evolution of "The Tiny Spinies" - which, ironically, aren't even Spinies! It's the two "R.S. Buzzies" (5, 3, 4), but now they have wings. You can't jump on 'em, and you can't hammer 'em, so how are you gonna deal? ...Actually, I think this might be a new enemy type! Spiny Parabuzzies exist in the game already, but they're blue. What would this be? The "R.S. Parabuzzy"? Make some room in the Tattle Log, Goombella!

    15: The Crunk Rocks

    Spoiler

"The Punk Rocks" featured three Hyper Bald Clefts (3, 2, 2). In this new version, one of them (Cleftor) will remain, while another will be a Hyper Cleft (4, 3, 3), and the third is a Moon Cleft (6, 5, 5).

    14: Bigger Bob-Omb Squad

    Spoiler

    A Bob-Omb (4, 2, 1), a Bulky Bob-Omb (6, 2, 1), a Bob-Ulk (10, 4, 2), and... Bombette? That's right, she's back!

Bombette is (10, 3, 2), offering both a normal Bomb attack, and also a "Power Bomb" that strikes both Mario and his ally.

    13: The Gimme-Grabbies

    Spoiler

An evolution of the "Hand-it-Overs". This one features all the original members - two Bandits (5, 2, 0) and two Big Bandits (8, 3, 0) - as well as a Badge Bandit (12, 5, 0). I definitely want to keep this group in, since Bandy Andy is a notable NPC. Badge Bandit is normally a Pit-of-100-Trials enemy, but I don't think it's too strong to feature.

    12: Sushie Rollers

    Spoiler

Two Cheep-Cheeps are here, Sushie and Sashimie (her daughter).

Sushie is (20, 3, 0), with her usual Belly Flop attack, as well as Water Block, which boosts her ally's defense by 2 for up to 3 turns.

Sashimie is (15, 4, 0), also having the Belly Flop attack, alongside a Tidal Wave that will hit Mario and his partner.

    11: X Marks the Naut

    Spoiler

This is a totally new group, consisting of two X-Nauts (4, 3, 0), one X-Naut PhD (9, 4, 0), and one Elite X-Naut (10, 5, 1). Some might object to these enemies showing up at the Glitz Pit. But hey, even minions need a vacation now and then!

    10: Whiggity Whacka

    Spoiler

Remember Whacka, from the last two games? He's back, as an enemy! He is (25, 1, 1). Sounds weak, right? But, for every point of damage he's taken, his Attack power increases by 1. This makes him an enemy you'll want to take out fast.

    Bonus: The Armored Harriers

    Spoiler

Originally, I had these as the 10th-ranked foes, as before. But, I'm thinking they actually got kicked out of the league, for being impossible to damage. It just makes for boring fights! However, they won't take this sitting down (uh, can Iron Clefts sit?). As such, they return to the Ring, to try to keep Gonzales out of the Major League, as before.

    9: Air Mail

    Spoiler

    A mix of enemies here: a Dark Puff (3, 2, 0), a KP Paratroopa (4, 2, 1), Ruff Puff (7, 4, 0), an Ice Puff (9, 4, 0), and of course, Parakarry.

Parakarry (15, 3, 1) can use the Sky Dive attack, as well as the Air Raid, as well as a Shell Shot that fires up to 3 times. Unlike other Paratroopas, he can't be knocked out of the sky.

    8: Magikoopa Mystics

    Spoiler

Take the existing Magikoopa Masters - one Red (7, 4, 0), one Green (7, 4, 0), and one White (7, 4, 0) - and add in a traditional blue Magikoopa (7, 4, 0). Basically the original, but more.

7: Hamma, Bamma, Chompy, and Flare

    Spoiler

The existing trio - Hamma, Bamma, and Flare - features a Hammer Bro (7, 4, 1), a Boomerang Bro (7, 2, 1), and a Fire Bro (7, 3, 1). For the latter two, this is their only appearance in the game, so I definitely didn't want to cut them. To up the difficulty, though, we're adding a Red Chomp (6, 5, 3) from the duo "Chomp Country".

    6: Spike's Storm

    Spoiler

An evolution of "Spike Storm", this time with one Lakitu (5, 2, 0), two Red Spinies (3, 3, 3), and of course, Lakilester.

Lakilester is (25, 2, 0), and throws Red Spinies. He can also summon Dodgy Fog, making himself and allies tougher to hit.

    5: Yux it Up

    Spoiler

    A Yux (3, 2, 0), a Z-Yux (7, 4, 0), and an X-Yux (10, 3, 1), all in a row. These enemies can also summon Mini-Yux, Mini-Z-Yux, and Mini-X-Yux, respectively, shielding themselves from damage.

    4: Craw Kin

    Spoiler

In addition to the fearsome Dark Craw (20, 6, 0), you'll have to fight two regular Craws (20, 3, 0). Or... will the game call them "Gus"es? Not sure.

    3: The Boo-jwah-zee

    Spoiler

One Boo (7, 3, 0), one Dark Boo (12, 5, 0), and a couple of old haunts: Lady Bow and Bootler!

Lady Bow is (20, 2, 0). She can use "Outta Sight" to turn allies invisible, or the "Fan Smack" to strike three times.

Bootler is (15, 5, 0). While his attack looks tough, he usually doesn't attack. Instead, he prefers to buff Lady Bow's attack or defense (+2 for 3 turns).

    2: Koopinator II: Electric Boogaloo

    Spoiler

The Dark Koopatrol (25, 5, 2) has a new partner, but who? Or, should I say... Watt?

Watt (20, 5, 0) can't be touched directly, or you'll be in for a shock! She can do "Electro Dash" for raw damage, with a chance to paralyze, or Turbo Charge, granting her ally +2 attack for 3 turns.

    1: Mr. L

    Spoiler

Your last enemy before the Champion! This one isn't a surprise - he was introduced as a new "climber" in the ranks, with potential to become the next Champion. But who could this mysterious masked man be? Well... Luigi. Like, it's obvious to Goombella and your other partners, but they're too polite to say it to his face. His music would, of course, be based on his encounter music in Super Paper Mario.

Anyway, Mr. L, also known as "the Green Thunder", is (60, 6, 0). He can do a normal jump attack, as well as a "super jump" that has the potential to cause confusion. Also, by doing his signature L-pose, he can get the crowd on his side, causing Mario to drain up to two full points on the "Special meter".

Once defeated, Luigi will come out of the audience to congratulate his Bro on beating that suspiciously handsome stranger. Wait... Luigi? That's right - you look back to Mr. L, and he was a Duplighost all along! Embarrassed, he flees the Arena.

Later on, Mario has the chance to speak to Ganger, the Duplighost. Turns out, after reading Luigi's autobiography, he began to idolize the man. As such, he invented the "Mr. L" persona, in order to promote - and also embody - his hero. Of course, he couldn't just dress up as Luigi - where's the style, the panache? While he plans to drop the act, Luigi encourages him to continue. After all, he could never see the resemblance.

    Bonus: Rawk & Roly

    Spoiler

That's right - Rawk Hawk is back! And he's added a new partner to his routine. Naturally, he gets to keep his own music.

Rawk Hawk (40, 4, 0) has the same attacks as before, with one addition: a "power boost" move that increases Attack and Defense by +2 each, both for himself and his ally.

Roly Moly - real name, Molly Mole - is a light blue Monty Mole. She has (24, 6, 0). In addition to the usual "throw rock" attack, she can jump out and launch a rolling attack. This hits both Mario and his partner, and has a chance of making them dizzy.

    Ch: Prince Mush

    Spoiler

The one true champion, the legendary Prince Mush, makes his long-awaited return! Let's give him 75 HP, 8 Attack, and 1 Defense. What would his attacks look like? Well, first, I'd do a normal punching maneuver. When his HP falls below 30, he'll introduce a throwing attack - grabbing Mario and throwing him into his partner (or vice versa). Think of it as analogous to Mini-Yoshi's Gulp. Finally, if he's in the single digits, he'll try an all-out assault: two punches (4 damage apiece), two kicks (6 damage each), and a headbutt (8 damage). If he's that low, a certain Jolene in the audience might also sneak him a Super Shroom. As for his music, rather than reusing Rawk Hawk's, or going with the mini-boss music, I'm envisioning a remix of "The Master" fight theme, from the original Paper Mario.

Of course, each battle will have its own reward of Coins and Star Points. But, what more? Well, defeating Prince Mush will award the "Star Presence" badge. At a cost of 4 BP, this provides a 50% boost to Star Power when attacking, or executing "stylish" commands, but not when Appealing.

So there it is, the revised lineup! Are there any changes you'd make? Any enemies you'd add in, or take out? Depending on the feedback, maybe I'll come up with a "Round 3" that opens up in the postgame. Thank you for reading, and feel free to share your thoughts below!

Yeah, I am definitely a fan of the Shield Ring on Erinys, at least some of the time. Shores up one of her issues, of not-the-best physical bulk. ...Although even in that aspect, she's not that bad.

As for their chapter 3 appearance, it just feels really... random, I guess? You're on the opposite side of the continent at this point. And it's not like they even show up from the direction of Thracia. Fast players can seize Castle Silvail before they even make landfall.

As for them showing up as mercenaries - while it makes sense Travant would want money for his Kingdom, how much does Chagall even have at this point? He's lost the throne, and been backed into a corner. If anything, it'd make more sense for them to contract with Grannvale to help finish off Chagall. Hell, it'd be really funny if you could "pay them off" like Beowulf - but instead of being recruited, they turn into green units and help you out.

And if he's wrong, Aida could later tell Arvis, putting Reptor in jeopardy. This makes more sense as something he'd say to a House Friege lieutenant. Or an aside that only the player can hear.

Unfortunate that she wields Meteor at range. The Miracle Sword would give her much higher AS, so she wouldn't get doubled and could avoid more hits. Hell, she'd probably be a more formidable boss if she just left the Meteor tome at home.

And not everybody is equally threatened by the Horseslayers, which allows Lex to safely grab two kills on enemy phase.

That's the Achilles' Heel of effective weaponry, innit? If you're not hitting the foe, then you're not doing 2x or 3x damage - you're doing 0x damage. I wouldn't mind seeing a future game give effective weapons, say, +50 Hit against the right targets. Make them something you can't just dodgetank away.

..actually, the First Mate put it in B tier during the Matrimonial Mondays, because it gives Lene more oomph for the arena (Brave Sword!), and more HP to both of the kids. But since I've done virtually nothing to set up inheritance and I don't care that much about Lene leveling up, that still sounds like a bad trade for what the substitutes would bring to the table.

I'll take any mention! It's not a pairing I've done yet. But I figured it's better than basement-tier, for giving Lene the best possible combat, thanks to B-rank Swords and Luna. Not that Lene's combat matters all that much, but it's a fun niche. Better than, say, Jamke giving Accost, or Arden giving Vantage.

Since he mentions Finn, I would guess that the implication is something along the lines of "I know you're actually super into Finn and only married me because I made a move and he didn't". Otherwise, I also don't see why Beowulf would tell her to go to Leonster, not to Isaach to join up with Oifey and Shannan.

That would match with how, in T776, Diarmuid is implied to be Beowulf's child, while Nanna is implied to be Finn's. A curious choice, as this specific scenario is actually impossible to achieve in Genealogy. But it would allow for Nanna to be conceived after the Battle of Belhalla.

I am mistaken...though I kind of shouldn't be, right? I mean...Alvis straight up wanted Vaja to die then. And later when Aida is like "JK we were on your side all along" Sigurd isn't like "Really...dude I murdered a bunch of Velthomers when taking that castle. Why didn't anyone say anything?" I know Fanore (that's the correct spelling, everyone but me is wrong, it's a beach in Ireland, trust me) is probably in Velthomer territory in so much as it can be considered part of Grannvale at all...but still, I feel these soldiers probably should have been working for Reptor...was this decision really as simple as Meteor=Velthomer with no consideration of how it means Alvis is basically murdering his own subjects. Well, at least half of them are on plateaus where there is some expectation they won't die (not withstanding a single very thorough pegasus knight).

The fewer people who know of Arvis' planned betrayal, the better. If Arvis tells Vaha, and word gets to Reptor, then he'll lose the element of surprise. Reptor could say "I'm gonna rendezvous with them at the southern edge of the desert", and then just... leave. What's Aida gonna do, once he's outside of Meteor range?

One more thing - Arvis already plans to double-cross Sigurd. So, if Vaha and her cadre manage to weaken them, and pick a few off in advance, all the better. As for letting his own troops perish for a tactical advantage? I'm shocked, I say, shocked! That is completely out of character for that boy scout, Arvis.

Warp is B-rank. Deirdre has B-rank Staves, so of course she can use it. Except... in chapter 3, she's stuck in the home castle, so she can't warp to anywhere else. And by the time another castle is seized, she, y'know...

The tip stands for Return. Have Ethlyn spam it, and then sell it before the end of chapter 3. From there, it can be good on Lachesis, if she's not yet promoted.

    With its mouth, like Pichu!

Anyway, one that came to my mind is Cyclizar. We've not yet had a playable Dragon-type Pokemon. It could have typical attacks on that front (i.e. Dragon Rush, Dragon Pulse), as well as its signature Shed Tail (I'm thinking a "warp" maneuver that damages itself, but provides brief invulnerability afterward).

Maybe it could also have "Tera-type options": Electric to make it speedier (and give it a thundery Tera Blast), Fighting to make it hit harder (and give it a "flurry-of-fists" Tera Blast), or Normal to improve its durability (and give it a beam-like Tera Blast). I'm imagining it could "Tera" once per match, and once it dies while Tera'd, it can't do it again.

Finally, the Final Smash. It would depend upon the "Tera Type". Normal, it's just a classic Hyper Beam. Electric, Miraidon shows up to do an Electro Drift. And Fighting, Koraidon comes forth to deliver a Collision Course.

Anyway, that's what I'm thinking. Even if it's not Cyclizar, it would be neat if the Gen IX representative were to exhibit the Terastallization mechanic.

    Thanksies~

No problem. I definitely think it will be possible. And it's not like you need to get everyome to level 30.

One suggestion I would add is, if someone can't beat a certain level of the Arena, get them a better weapon. The Brave Sword, in particular, is dynamite. High-powered, light, and accurate, with the Brave effect. It's costly, sure, but it can help if you buy it at a less-than-full use count. Don't repair it, or other weapons, until you have to.

Finally, note that - if a weapon breaks mid-battle - the unit can keep using it until they finish. So, if Silvia does 1 damage to a 50 HP foe, she can beat him with a 50-use Iron Sword... or a 10-use Iron Sword. Obviously, the latter is cheaper.

The Agustrian succession seems to have set the precedent "ding-dong", or maybe seniority before Major Hezul blood. Hezul was the first king of Agustria, so presumably, Chagall is a distant cousin of Eldigan's, from a branch of the family where the Hezul blood has been "watered down". And that's what happens when you don't incest, kids

I do wonder whether Chagall would be given minor Hezul blood in a potential remake. Seems like that's something he'd be expected to have. In theory, the blood could be "watered down" to undectability, but in gameplay, that never really happens. Only when a child would have two other blood types, does one of them get "suppressed".

And Quan's mistake still comes across as believable, I find. He tunnel-visioned on the dangers posed to Leonster while he is away and his father is sick, so he left behind his most trusted knight, probably had all ballistae maintained and manned and Wingslayers distributed to the Sword Fighters... but he completely blanked on the fact that, if you split your army in two, both halves are going to be vulnerable. It's a huge mistake, for sure, but one I can sympathise with (minus the "getting yourself, your family, and half an army slaughtered as a result" part, of course).

I was gonna complain about Ethlyn saying she would leave back to Leonster, and then just... not... doing so. But thinking on it, even if she had tried to return, the Thracian Dracoknights were showing up, like, right away. Even discounting the whole "backtracking through the desert", they probably would've caught up to her on her return home.

Thinking more on it, perhaps the Thracian Dracoknights should've debuted in this chapter? It does establish them as a fearsome threat. Versus their appearance in chapter 3, which is marginal and largely irrelevant. And with Gen II, it's not as though there's any shortage of Wyvern enemies.

Meanwhile, it feels like the Grannvale chapters are more focused on specific characters and the overarching plot of Manfroy's Fun Incest Times. You don't get as much of a feel on the country of Grannvale as a whole, and then in gen 2 it's basically just "Loptyr's puppet state."

Yeah, Grannvale itself doesn't have much of a discernible "culture", or "flavor", in the way that polities like Verdane and the Kingdom of Thracia do. You could argue that it's due to each House having its own domain. But then again, each House territory is too small to really feel like its own country. We learn a decent amount about House Friege, sure, but almost none of it happens in Friege territory.

Essentially, the "secret" to capping on experience is, pass the Paragon Band around. Especially when you're Arena-ing. Completing all 7 rounds awards 17.5K gold. The Band costs 40k, and can be sold back for 20k, so you're only losing out on 2.5k gold overall. A lot of your units are rich, so they can definitely afford the Band. That said, if they've already partially Arena'd it may not be worthbuying and reselling. Still, something to keep in mind for next chapter.

Having said all that, this is your first playthrough of Genealogy, yes? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about Rankings. I would just focus on getting to know the story and characters. Find out what you like, and what you're not a fan of. Learn by experience. Then, you might be ready for the added challenge of Rankings on your next playthrough.

And calling Forresters "Hero" is also rather questionable. It sorta matches in terms of statistics, at least. But calling them "Mercenary" would make more sense, since that's what advanced Swordfighters are called in Thracia.

But calling the promoted Sword infantry class in Thracia 776 "Mercenary" was an exceedingly silly choice to begin with. The Archanea-Valentia games established "Mercenary" as a first-tier class that would promote into something stronger. "Hero" in Archanea, or "Myrmidon", and later "Dread Fighter", in Valentia. But now, Mercenary is a promoted class? After taking a title off for something called "Forrest"? It feels like Jugdral being different, not in an interesting way, but in a way that is just prone to breed confusion.

On the flip side, I do have to give these titles their due for inventing the Swordmaster class. And taking the first steps toward the GBA-onward "Mercenary/Myrmidon" split. Even though they were technically all "Sword Fighters" in these games.

Nanna was born in Leonster in the year preceding its downfall, she lived most of her life on the run with her mother and Leonster's Prince Leif as they evaded capture by the Friege forces occupying the Munster District.
