Zidane has fantastic stats, then i remember he's a thief and become enraged. maybe i am old fashion or something, but when you assign someone a class i expect that class to remain in effect or still be relevant to their stats and abilities. Not merely ignored because he happens to be the hero and we all want the hero to be tough. zidane essentially becomes stronger than Steiner in basic attacks (unless you do that whole exaclibur time challenge easter egg). a thief should be fast and deal moderate damage, not the absurd damage Zidane does...why the hell did they give him double-bladed swords?
then there's the story of 9. i give the game credit for all its series references and allusions. it is intelligent and well crafted in that aspect. however, the story of the game looses all meaning as it becomes about idiotic and ridiculous things. why the hell did the "eye in the sky" have to be a spaceship? in a series titled "fantasy," i didn't realize all things had to be explained.
as Tolkien said, myth and fantasy are not meant to be exploded. they are to be accepted and seen as parables.
9 just does not have an organic or original feel in it. the game feels trite and the characters are all stereotypes and poorly developed. the only exception to that is Vivi, but anything cool about him seems to falter when Zidane turns out to be construct that is practically the same thing as Vivi. it's like the writer and director sat down and thought "okay, let's have three characters with identity issues....an idiot muscle head fighter...a dragoon of another race that we'll only talk about for a few minutes...a blue mage 'thing'...and we need our requisite mystery bad ass ninja..oh, and don't forget about the loli magic girl."
that's the cast of the game, and that's how they're all portrayed.
yeah, it is sad that Vaan gets the best stats....square enix's effeminate, pretty, poster boy.
it is sickening. that's also why i hate Zidane.
for one, how is Bum Rush an easter egg?
go talk to his wife in South Figaro and she tells you he's a live and where to find him. that's pretty obvious. it isn't the chris houlihan room of Link to the Past.
yeah, i read your post, this one:
my point is this: Sabin does not "diminish". he continues to be "fucking ludicrous" to whole game. you do not NEED to teach him magic to destroy bosses. Hell, i only give him espers that pump up his physical stats. why would i worry about casting magic when Bum Rush is mp free? He defines a broken character from beginning to end. I understand that you're giving him a lot of credit and saying he's a good character. my point is this, you're not giving him enough.
and i also understand there are a few stronger strategies out there. but by and far, Sabin's usefulness does not "diminish."
i don't know what a "strawman" is. and i'm not idly reading posts and twisting language. nor am i causing argument for arguments sake or trying to knock him down. i read the word "diminish" as it means, and found its usage untrue. i agree with him for the most part, however i think he's wrong on certain aspects.
perhaps "final dungeon failure" was a gross exaggeration on my part. i do apologize for that.
as for what level do i play at, i play through the game and rarely level grind. i tend to give magic only to the "mage" characters. Terra, Celes, Strago, Relm, and Gogo (mimic only) because they start out with magic. the only time i level grind in the game is just before Kefka's Tower, making sure my magic characters know enough spells. i don't care if my ass gets handed to me when i go into the final dungeon, it should be a struggle and i should have to adapt on the fly. playing by these rules only stresses how much better a character Sabin is than most the group. he is a self-sufficient machine that continues to grow with little effort other than gaining experience.
Cyan has time restraints. Strago needs to get hit by the abilities (and is hampered by double mp usage). Locke needs two relics and a good weapon to be great. Shadow needs money spent on him for his throws. Gau needs to learn monsters powers nor can you control him. Celes's power is defensive. Terra NEEDS to learn magic or is utterly useless. Setzer's usefulness DOES DIMINISH unless you combine the offering with his best weapon AT THE END OF THE GAME. Edgar needs money spent on him and a some-what tricky puzzle solved to reach his best. Relm is unpredictable and unreliable, also her improved power comes late in the game.
i think all my points are proven.
