  1. Wow... How did they get Restoration Lord and Restoration Lady out of that? I mean, their English titles make sense in how they rebuild Renais, but wow, did the original go for a different angle. I know that Ike is "Hero of the Blue Flames" iirc, after the Japanese title of PoR. I like Radiant Hero better though, sounds cooler. Huh... Hating? He's more afraid and awkward rather than hating... This title makes him sound like a misogynist, lol. Yup, but his case isn't as unfortunatel as Mist. "Haar" just means "hair."
  2. It basically means "shit," lol. "Manure" or "trash" would be accurate, but it's very derogatory, so it's closer to a swear word.
  3. With all this talk of languages, I hopped over to the FE Heroes wiki to satisfy my curiosity about something. I'm surprised that they kept Klein's name the same in the German translation of the game, since "Klein" means "small" in German iirc. I know they changed Mist's name because it means something unfortunate in German, but I'm surprised this one wasn't touched at all. Huh.
  4. If Gaius wins and faces Corrin and the Tharja effect happens again... I swear...
  5. I mean don't get me wrong, I love talking about localization and stuff, I find it really interesting when it's a balanced conversation. Just people treating the FE localizations (specifically Fates localization, but it's by no means exclusive to that game) like it's the literal work of Satan out to destroy all that is good and light about this universe and all universes is just a little tiresome. Just a little.
  6. This isn't gonna turn into another one of those tired "localizations are the spawn of the devil" things is it... Please, mercy... Everywhere I go... I see it...
  7. One of the big reasons why FE4 is so liked is that the first generation is a deconstruction of a lot of the common tropes that FE1 used, to the point of Sigurd himself being a deconstruction of Marth, a sort of "this is what happens in the real world." Granted, Seliph was a reconstruction and restoration of the Marth Archetype, but the impact still stands. I'd like an FE game following a deconstruction of the magnetic leader that FE protagonists are. About how difficulty and messy having and keeping power actually is. What it does to a person. Our hero (or heroine, because we definitely need more female protagonists) starts off young, fiery, and full of spirit, but compassionate and a great person to be around, a young crown prince or princess. They're intelligent, good-looking, and not too shabby with a sword/spear/axe/bow/tome/whathaveyou. Their kingdom is the typical benevolent kingdom, though small in comparison to the rest of the continent, without a firm, consolidated base of power. In the past few decades, more and more of their original kingdom has been swallowed up by the oppressive neighboring state, an empire ruled by a dictatorial madman. The enemy, inhumanly cruel. The heir is disgusted by them and the kingdom, and someone so vile deserves nothing but death. Any day the remainder of their kingdom could be invaded and overrun, crushed, and subjugated, everyone murmurs. Talks of diplomacy have been tried and failed. The people live anxiously. The heir, seeing the distress of the people, resolves to work so that no one in their kingdom should fear the future. They've got plenty of colorful personalities as friends, other nobles, servants, and the like that pledge their lives to the cause. With the monarch's blessing, they depart, intending to reclaim their lost territories and (though the heir keeps this bit a secret to only their closest friends The business of war and control is an ugly one, and it changes people, after all. Kind and noble deeds of the protagonist during the wartime come back to bite them. Release a gaggle of captured enemy soldiers? Get your camp raided in the middle of the night, lose supplies, and have nearby town burned. Release a mysterious stranger? He's a spy, and tells the enemy of your location. The battle is harder, as reinforcements have been sent. Well, they . Pragmatism is what is needed. The protagonist dips into territory he or she has never been, and never hoped to be, for the safety and longevity of their kingdom and people. Or, that's what they tell themselves. They're not going to take any chances. The protagonist finds that they can no longer be relaxed, friendly and open about everything. There are eyes and ears everywhere, spies working for the enemy, but also for themselves in their court. People who seem innocuous aren't. They don't now who to trust. Even those that claim loyalty and love for him/her could be lying simply to advance themselves. They become colder and more distant, and lash out at their friends in frustration. They've come too far to let everything slip from their grasp now. They grow more and more unstable, more violent, and prone to force, but also more powerful, more intimidating, and more cunning. The protagonist succeeds in their goals. They siege the empire's castle, and put to death the emperor that had threatened their lands. Any and all supporters remaining, the emperor's guard and soldiers, are to be found and executed as well. No chances. The protagonist realizes they're now in charge of not only the empire, but the original kingdom and all of its lands. They're declared emperor, and immediately they work at securing their own power base. Neighboring states are turned into vassal states, if not annexed completely. Martial law rules. They won't allow a rebellion raised against them, the way the previous emperor had. He had grown complacent, and foolish. In the end, the protagonist has become just as despotic as the men/women that they so despised and set out to destroy all that time ago. Now, this could end either with the protagonist being bitterly overthrown by their own people, or the protagonist ruling the now-merged empire, unfulfilled, bitterly regretting the path they were forced to take. No longer trusting people enough to form bonds. They remain paranoid the rest of their life, viewing even their own children as potential threats to security. They are unhappy, and unfulfilled. Never again can they sleep soundly. Dark, but a fascinating character study about the descent of decent of good, well-meaning people into horrific acts that are so common in history.
  8. I always go with Adventurer, honestly because I find horseback archers so painfully mediocre, and the fact that Niles' usefulness as a combat unit falls off mid- and later game.. Snipers are the way to go imo, because it's better to specialize rather than be all-around and not excel at anything. That's the problem a lot of people have with Dark Knight, and while I think the class is okay (Lifetaker makes it a great tank), I prefer the strength/weakness model rather than the "okay at everything" model, personally. And since Niles' strength is pitiful in the first place, he can at least aid the team after he falls off through his healing. Shura's strength is relatively low as well, but at least he's a walking crit machine.
  9. - Have Xander stand up to Garon, thus connecting his character in his supports to his character in the main story, during Conquest In fact, have all of the Nohrian siblings come over to Corrin's side gradually, after realizing what a despot beyond the point of no return that Garon is. Iron out all of the inconsitencies by letting story Xander be support Xander, who is infinitely superior a character. - Give the Dawn Brigade longer than a fourth of the game to develop as characters. Best case scenario, keep the GMs out of the plot as much as possible. We see them from the Dawn Brigade's point of view. They show up as NPCs and enemies, with Ike having a similar intimidating presence to the DB as Zelgius had to Ike in PoR, as this is Micaiah and the Dawn Brigade's story most of all. They finally become playable in part 4, when everyone is playable and united. - Don't kill off Mikoto the second she's introduced. She can be grievously wounded in the attack, but not killed, which compromises her barrier and allows the Nohrians to invade. Give her time to develop as a counterpart to Garon who isn't as different as she initially appears to be. - Ike doesn't randomly up and leave Tellius, abandoning the people he's known as his family for years. - Make Garon a non-cartoony villain. He was a decent if not benevolent guy gradually overtaken by his own lucklessness, Hoshido's apathy to Nohr, and his own cynicism. He's a harsh ruler, but he actually cares a whit about his kids, overjoyed if Corrin has returned to him even after learning the truth, enough that while he regrets having to kill them once they defy his plans, he's so far gone that nothing will compromise his potential victory over Hoshido. Also, he's not a slime monster. He's still a person, just having given into darker impulses. - For Hoshido as a whole, show a bit of its dark side. We hear about disgruntled nobles, but they stay firmly offscreen. Make Hoshido apathetic to Nohr's struggles, much like Zofia was apathetic to Rigel. Zofia/Rigel is Hoshido/Nohr done right, now that I think about it. Take notes. - Have Ike and Mist actually interact past Greil's immediate death. Keep Ike's personality from PoR, rather than turning him bland in RD. - Address the inconsistencies between the BK writing in PoR and Zelgius writing in RD. Have Zelgius either admit that his earlier speeches threatening Greil and his family were bluffs, or get rid of them entirely. Keep him cold and threatening, but not cruel. - Pelleas actually is suspicious of Izuka instead of being totally blindsided that the obviously evil guy is evil, but makes it clear that his thankfulness at being rescued from the orphanage and his own shy personality/insecurities hold him back from calling Izuka out. - Give Ilyana an actual personality and a reason to exist. Give her a story. Where does she come from? What does she want? Why? My idea: She grew up in poverty in the slums, and was taught/learned at an early age to use her demure cuteness to take advantage of people to survive/get what she wants, getting free dinners and things. In the end she wants to get rich enough to be able to eat as much as she wants and live a comfortable life. She pretends to be scatterbrained to make herself look less threatening and make people pity her. - Write Lyn into Binding Blade, either involved with Hector and Eliwood as Lilina's mother, or with the conflict in Sacae as Sue's mother. Have some appearances or at least explanations where all of the other first generation characters ended up. - Like people have said before, Peri starts as one of Hans' henchwomen. Her psychotic personality is appropriately horrifying to the rest of the cast, and Hans leaves her for dead, which is why she's picked up by Corrin and the gang. Xander takes her under his wing to watch her and make sure she doesn't target any innocents, not because he's inexplicably drawn to a serial killer. He warns her that if finds out she's been killing innocents, he'll personally execute her. By the end of the game, she's starting to adjust to morality and a normal life, and his supports change to telling her that he's proud of how far she's come. - Have Tormod and company not randomly up and disappear in the middle of the plot. - Give Camilla (and Charlotte) some actual armor. Make her motherly/protective of Corrin in a non pseudo-incestuous way, and explore more of her background to flesh her out. Have her supports focus on things other than Corrin. - The Deeprealms doesn't exist. Instead, we have a timeskip and a second generation, the war having stayed locked in a bitter stalemate, with everyone roughly 15 - 20 years older. That's all I can think of for now.
  10. Yeah, in any other game, I would have much preferred a speedy unit to a slow one. Except Fates' RNG does whatever the hell it wants, so dodgetanking isn't reliable. You need straight up face tanking, and Hinata and Subaki do it amazingly well. I threw Hana and Charlotte onto the bench as soon as I got them. I don't want to have to spam my reset button.
  11. Oh yeah, any half decent green will make mincemeat out of her in short order. But she can target reds pretty well, at least. xD
  12. I love reading things like this, about the localization process and things that are adjusted or changed. As a side note, a little compendium with all of the Heroes characters' Japanese dialogue/titles alongside their English dialogue/titles would be cool, but I know just how much work that would be, so I'm not expecting that anytime soon, lol.
  13. Really? Weird, because all of the AI that I go up against can't use a refresher unit to save its life. Because all of the refreshers I've gone up against recently just stand there miles away from anybody they can dance into threat range until their team's main offensive unit is dead, and then they start moving in. I almost feel sorry for the Olivias and Ninians without anyone to support. At least Azura can conceivably be a threat if she doesn't sing anyone in.
  14. Damn, Gaius just got the multiplier :/ Holding off for now. Yup, everyone was fully built and I had zero choice but to surrender. And yeah, M!Robins are definitely a threat to a full colorless team, but since colorless is generally rare as the lead unit, I find that getting all colorless teams pretty much doesn't happen, unlike all one color teams.
  15. I can say that Ninians have helped me out quite a lot, so I imagine it's much of the same for them. Now, the AI Ninians on the other hand are kind of dead weight most of the time, as AI refreshers tend to be. Ouch. That's super feels bad... And I thought getting an Odin on my team in VG was bad enough...
  16. o.o Have you actually had weaponless units paired with you? Damn, man, I've never been trolled that hard. I feel for you. Hope I never get unlucky enough to get something like that.
  17. Me yesterday, with a team consisting of my Karel, an Alm and an Ike...versus Reinhardt, Linde, and Sharena. 0/10 fairness. That's kinda why colorless is the best option if you want to have zero chance of being RNG screwed over like that. Granted, -raven tomes are out there, but they can be circumvented much easier than something like what I ran into.
  18. Ah. Well...in a perfect world they'd all give their permission and everyone could be happy. Even though I know we'd probably never get the separate options in the first place. Just like audio for languages other than English and Japanese will never happen, haha.
  19. What do you mean, if you don't mind me asking? How would that be a barrier to separate text-speech options?
  20. Oh, wow, I never thought of this as a possibility at all, lol. That would actually be really cool as a way for people who prefer the Japanese voices, but can't read Japanese. Filing this under "wishlist for future updates to FE Heroes" even though I know it's unlikely to happen...
  21. I've found that L&D pairs well with units with otherwise very balanced stats, since they massively appreciate the boost to offense and speed, and can deal fine with the drop in defenses. I have it on my Alm and it's helped him one-round units he otherwise wouldn't be able to, double units he otherwise wouldn't be able to, or avoid getting doubled when he otherwise would be. Not to mention, built in Falchion Renewal 2 renders any extra damage he'd take not coming from blues moot. Lol, same. I switched out of curiosity, and then almost panicked because I didn't remember the order of the menus and which setting was the switch back to English. It was a lot of trial and error to fix.
  22. Yeah, this is probably the best option. I'm not spending any flags unless we get behind enough to get a multiplier toward the end of the round. We want Team Gaius to just barely behind us so they don't pull a multiplier comeback in the end.
  23. Just population doesn't equal higher percentage of fans, though. Yeah, we've got a higher population, but I'm pretty sure we don't have more fans is what I'm saying.
  24. Switched to Klein for anyone on Team Leo and my friends list to finish up the Colorless quest to get those extra flags, luckily it was during the multiplier. Hopefully people put those flags to good use. Woot, you're doing us a great service, and congrats! Jesus, whale located, lol. I mean I've gone back and forth wondering if I should train up Faye. Idk if worth, or what I'd build on her. Brave Bow is tempting because she's molasses slow anyway, lol. Pretty sure this isn't true, for both the US and Japan. I mean, FE was big in Japan ages before FE7 even hit US shores. Sure, U.S. has a higher population than Japan, and Awakening brought in a ton of fans for our side, but I'm pretty sure that FE still has more Japanese fans than U.S. fans.
