Anyway, learning that Sakhalin needed to survive was surprising to me! Since I'm learning a lot of ASM these days in my new computer science studies, my pipe dream is that one day I'll be able to disassemble & decompile Berwick and see what's up with the alleged spaghetti code. There's also the mess of tools I inherited for the TRS translation; I actually have the source code for those, so hopefully they'll be better to digest. For now, though, I've returned to being a poor college student, and the best time I'll have to go back to work on TRS and BWS typo (etc.) fixing is this coming summer, so you guys can look forward to that, at least.

This isn't a counterargument to your wishes or anything, but: let it be known that when IshiharaS posted that message, I sent a PM to ask about what ideas they had and what lines were supposed translated to have "almost completely opposite meaning." I have received no response in an entire year, nor has IshiharaS even bothered to read my message. More on topic, if anyone wants to bring up translation points, I do want to do my best to hear them out and take constructive criticism... And the only way to do that constructively, in my mind, is to bring up specific instances of text where you think my translation is inadequate when compared to the Japanese original. If you need the script, here you go--both Japanese and English are included. Feel free to PM me or post it in the TRS forum; I would prefer a PM (or a separate thread), since I'd like to keep this thread mainly about patching instructions and typo/error reports, but you're free to do what you want. I just ask that wherever you post it, please tag me using "@Aethin" to make sure that I see it. In contrast, I want to make it known that making broad, sweeping claims that my Berwick translation is unfaithful or willfully distorts the meaning of the original Japanese lines without giving any examples doesn't earn any goodwill from me, especially after I made so much effort to preserve the original conversations' meanings when translating, and then to have each translated chapter proofread by other people who also know Japanese, played the JP version, and had the JP script on hand--all just to make sure I wasn't taking unwarranted liberties with the script (a precaution I decided to take after receiving some complaints from my TRS1 translation). I think I know more than anyone that my translations are not perfect, and looking back at many of the lines, I know there are many ways that I could have done them better... but I don't think that I've created a translation that I shouldn't be proud of or happy with. With that said, now that I have several more years of wisdom under my belt (not to mention how much I've improved in Japanese), I'd still like to go back and revise my translations--especially TRS1. No promises of when I might start or finish, but it's something that's always lingering in my mind.

  5. Hello, everyone! I know it's been a long time since I've spoken on this thread... and honestly, I felt like it would've been in bad taste to post in it without another update. However, I want to thank you all for your kind words and support for this project. I know I haven't been the most active or dedicated (taking many months of vacation off of it at points), so I'm honored that you guys have stuck with me all this time. Special thanks as well to @Lightgazer for ironing out all of the small bugs even after so long. I've incorporated all of the typos and other fixes that everyone's sent me (big thanks to @Saint Rubenio in particular), and I've returned to provide a new version of the patch! In addition, by popular demand, I've also uploaded a folder with all of the game's text files. To get the new files, please check the top of the first post of this thread.

  8. Semdallion's story purpose is to reiterate how even the Razites hate Chaos. To wit: FAYE: ...Chaos! I've found you! SEMDALLION: What?! How dare you! Don't lump me in with him! FAYE: You're... not him? SEMDALLION: ...Guess it doesn't matter now. Whoever you are, you'll be dead soon enough. Second, fun fact, there are remnants in the game files from when the four hostages in this chapter were Luciana, Maria, Yumil, and Quescria--but under the old names of "Etoile," "Janet," "Sophia," and "Resfina." Of particular interest is "Resfina," which is almost the same as "Resfinne," the beta name of TRS's Renee as found in the Emblem Saga demo. @Saint Rubenio knows exactly why I'm pointing out this comment.
  9. I was wondering this myself back when I was translating, and I have no sure explanation. My hypothetical explanations were: They are worried that if they try to kill the Apostle, she'll just awaken instead. They think the Apostle might not be killable at all by normal means. They don't know whether there are any other Apostle candidates alive, so if they can seal this one, they can prevent her powers from being passed on (and prevent themselves from having to go on another wild goose chase sometime within the next 15 years). I think the second option is probably closest to the author's intent, as you will see during the map. A bit of timeline explanation regarding this, as well as all of the recent revelations regarding Bernard's siblings (there shouldn't be any spoilers here): As you can see, the Berwick Civil War--which was really two consecutive wars attempting to oust Mordias--stretched from 600-607, hence why it's called the "Eight Years of Blood." Finally, since Sanacia's 15th birthday is coming up (erroneously stated by Lebough to be her 14th in the Japanese version, despite the fact that we know her exact birthdate and so many other timeline details), we know that Chapter 12 must be in September 619, with this next map specifically on the night of September 14th to the morning of the 15th. Serendipitously for the translation, this also that the coming-of-age-at-fifteen thing is exactly the same as what happened to Katri in TRS. Let the fan theories about any potential connections commence!
  10. The chat with the spy is incredibly dull in the Japanese version, so I took some artistic liberty here. Literal translation: My translation explained: The spy's message, on the other hand (which I assume we will see in the next update), is more or less directly translated from the Japanese version, i.e., it's nonsensical. As for some comment that I don't feel like finding again--I actually didn't write any of the unit reviews on the FE Wikia except for Derrick's, and even that was adapted from an earlier version. Most of the Berwick pages were not written by me, in fact! Just the bad ones.

I forget who mentioned it, so I'm not sure who to quote for this, but I want to clear up a misconception regarding in-universe history: The Lazberian Empire was not founded by Jugudi people, but by citizens of the Empire of Gerxel fleeing from Lieberia after Carluon killed Kalbazan/Gerxel in Lieberian year 34. So we can't directly blame Jugud for Lazberia's problems. (For those of you who haven't seen it, I have an overview of the TRS series timeline in the OP of the Berwick Translation thread. I also wrote almost all of the article on Lazberia on the FE Wikia, which gives a bit of a deeper look into Lazberia's history, though I do need to respell some place names.) Confusingly, I have no idea where the inborn ability to use magic comes from, but I assume that nebulously "from the emiyu" is a good guess. The Jugudi as well as all the native tribes of Lieberia (i.e., Zoans & Salians) were able to use magic, so it's a little unusual that the natives of Lazberia were unable to use it whatsoever before ethnic mixing post-antiquity. But while I'm at it, I'd also like to bring up a completely different backstory for Berwick Saga that never came to be, as the setting apparently underwent an extensive rewrite early on. (Translated from an old deleted post on Kaga's blog) : (Don't ask me how these calendar dates work, or where Istonia is, because I haven't got a clue.) Worth noting is that "Ar-Cana" (with an interpunct ・ in Japanese) is the name of Morse, Mimae, and Rebecca's race of immortal humans. They accompanied Miradona when she came to Lieberia, and then just fucked off and left her all alone. Great job babysitting the all-powerful toddler, guys.
  12. So, I checked the Berwick Wiki ("Berwicki"?) to see what was up with Gorras's AI. But first, let's talk about the various AI patterns! Units will be programmed to follow either one or a couple of the following patterns: ATTACK - Attack enemies in range, otherwise move towards nearest enemies. ATTACK(RESTRICTED) - Attack a specific targeted unit if in range; otherwise move toward the target; otherwise wait on the spot. Will not attack units other than the target, even if the path is blocked. If target leaves the map, becomes regular ATTACK type. ATTACK(MOVING) - Attack any enemies in range; otherwise move toward a specific point. When that point is reached, switches to a different AI pattern. INTERCEPT - Attack enemies in range; otherwise wait on the spot. INTERCEPT(HOME) - Attack enemies in range; otherwise return to designated "home" tile. CAUTIOUS - Attack enemies in range; otherwise move out of enemies' attack ranges (or try to); otherwise wait on the spot. CAUTIOUS(APPROACH) - Attack enemies in range; otherwise move out of enemies' attack ranges (or try to); otherwise move toward a spot just barely out of enemies' attack ranges (or try to). CAUTIOUS(ALERT) - Move out of enemies' attack ranges (or try to), otherwise wait on the spot. Will not attack. WANDER - Move around randomly. Will not attack(?) WANDER(AGGRESSIVE) - Attack enemies in range; otherwise move around randomly. PATROL - Attack enemies in range; otherwise follow a specific set route. FIXED - Attack enemies in range without moving; otherwise, wait on the spot. Can only be provoked by units that can be attacked without moving. MOVE - Move toward a specific point. Will not attack. FLEE - Move toward the nearest available escape point. Will not attack. FLEE(AGGRESSIVE) - Move toward the nearest escape point, attacking any enemy in the way, if possible. Note 1: Units using any of the AI patterns in red cannot be provoked, and those with the FIXED pattern have a strict limitation on when they can be provoked. Note 2: Also, units that are crippled or have no usable weapons left will usually switch to regular FLEE type. Note 3: The CAUTIOUS patterns have an oversight: they only look at your units' attack ranges for weapons in the inventory itself, not for weapons in bags! Now that we know all this, let's see Gorras's AI. He is programmed to: Start the map on ATTACK. After attacking/being attacked for the first time, switch permanently to FIXED. Which seems like the dumbest idea ever, but more power to him, I guess...

Slight spoiler for people who haven't seen the conclusion of this request: I did some digging through my old backups, and I found it: The Duchy of Bornia has betrayed the Berwick League, so Vanmilion goes to the stalwart Fort Aryuza to hold the southern line. However, he is ordered to massacre the town to avoid compromising the fort's security. The townspeople's lives are now in Reese's hands. Makes no frickin' sense. Honestly, it looks like someone took it with their flip-phone back when the game first released in '05... I think Aggro found it in an old 2channel thread or something. Oh hey, it's that unused face! Back in the day, I actually thought this was Derrick's real face because I saw a screenshot of this face with "Derrick" as the name. Turns out it was from someone using gameshark/whatever codes to look through the unused faces in the game, and they "just happened" to be editing Derrick's face ID do it. Which reminds me, I realized today that the game also has: Asbel (or Merric w/o his dumb hat) Ingridand DS!Caeda
  14. This guy is just labeled "Verian Knight" here in Japanese, yet some post-chapter dialogue mentions that his name is Bowen. Why they didn't put his name here is beyond me, so I put it in. In an early, early draft, I translated these before even starting on the chapters or really knowing the story well. I terribly mistranslated this one in particular since I didn't understand the idiom 見殺し mi-goroshi (literally "seeing-killing"). It means "watching and not helping as someone dies" (like Good King Volcenslas ordered them to do) but I misunderstood it as "overseeing someone's execution." Veeeeeeery different meanings. After seeing what this was about (the name Pallas), I've returned to report! None of us can be exactly sure what it's supposed to be, but our best guess is Pallas, the epithet of Athena, meaning either "maiden" or "brandishing (a weapon)." Either one would be suitable, since they're weapons wielded by special maidens. And for those who lost track: Serenia, Riana, and Leia are a Verian duchy, a kingdom in the north, and a kingdom in the east, respectively. My avatar's based on a character with a different-colored-but-the-same-design helmet named Gorzevalus. He's a meme in Japan. "I think you have too many soldiers in your battle party!" "Sorry, there are some things I've got to do." People noted that Penelo rhymes (except when he breaks character), which is pretty obvious, but I would like to point out that he speaks in couplets of iambic heptameter (also analyzable as ballad stanzas). It took me forever to do, but dammit, I was gonna use that poetry knowledge I learned in college even if it killed me! (It was actually pretty fun.)In the Japanese version, he just uses a few flowery phrases here and there, which was a huge wasted opportunity, in my opinion. Why would you have an annoying bard character who doesn't consistently speak in poems?? Behold the cursed image:

Since I'm the only one who knows Derrick's lines (having made them up in order to turn them into dots), I'll transcribe them as they come up: (Kept in spoilers for those who want to guess.) My exact reaction when translating this. Perhaps Ward had a few pints of ale at Alex's tavern before coming here; it'd explain why he's so short-tempered and needs to summarize for proper comprehension. I find it amusing that this guy looks like he could be Herman, but the nose and mouth are just a little different: I guess this gravekeeper also gets a little more sun than Herman, too. IT'S YA GIIIIIIIIIIRL Seriously, Rosalie is my favorite female character in the game. (Favorite male character is of course Derrick.) This one is particularly aimed at Ruben: Have you ever done made Derrick the one to tell you your party's full? He and Reese have a little exchange about it.   16. I'm a little late, but as promised, here are the official artists's drawings! There are sketches of Czene & Kramer and full drawings of Faye and Sylvis's chest. The game doesn't indicate it at all here, but rather than a one-month timeskip as you might expect, it's been four months since Chapter 2. Between then and now, we've been doing various odd jobs for the duchy and the League, the most recent being the delivery of supplies to Duke Warrenheit. We arrived in Navaron in June 618, Chapter 2 was July 618, and now it's about November 618. From now, each chapter is one month until Chapter 8 (abt. April 619). It should be noted that Duke Warrenheit (first name Mikhail) is the Duke of the Lowland Duchy, but right now, he happens to be leading the front lines in the Highland Duchy. The Duke of the Highlands is never seen or named in-game. In some planning documents, he was named Arnesto (Ānesuto), but this is actually the prototype for Duke Warrenheit, as Arnesto was Roswick's son-in-law (et cetera). Fun fact, this is my attempt to make the Apostle's name sound less similar to Sanaki. Her Japanese name is Sanākia. This is a bit of flourish on my part, working in some of the backstory Kaga wrote on his blog. The Old Empire was almost completely destroyed in an earthquake, and it fell completely when it was conquered by "brave warriors" from the east, who adopted parts of the shattered Old Empire's culture. These warriors later founded the Raze Empire. What Erzheimer says here in the Japanese version is that he is "twirling lightly" like a brave (sword)fighter from the east. Louvet (Rūvetto) is the name given to the late Duke of Serenia on Kaga's blog. He is not named in-game in the Japanese version. I was going to object that it's made of ivory, which floats, but I checked--and with a density of 1.70-1.93 g/mL, ivory definitely does not float; that's just ivory soap. So yeah, that lake must be clear as crystal if Axel's supposed to find it sunken at the bottom... (Having just watched Princess Mononoke recently, Almuth here greatly reminded me of Ashitaka.) I feel that there may be unexpected depth in this line, knowing that Ciel is blind. Saying "the sun will be setting soon" to a kid when telling them to come inside is normal, but here, it might actually be that Ciel needs to be told it because she can't tell. (The game never goes into detail what sort of blindness she has--if all she sees is black, or if she can distinguish light and dark--just that she's blind.) Or as the game's code calls you, "ArusHimmer." The same code that calls Reese "Lease," Sylvis "Shilwis," and Adel "Kein."
  17. me @ all of you readers who haven't played the game and are seeing Volcens's incompetence for the first time: Fun fact, the in-game terrain type of that lava is "water." "Water" that's orange-red and that gives off light. Clearly. Still, I assume Axel can walk on it... In a little backstory that Kaga wrote about Reese's dad (Bernstol), this guy (Padolf)'s older brother (also Padolf; apparently it's a family name) was getting too "touchy-feely" with one of the maids at the royal palace one time, so Bernstol slugged him so hard it put him in the hospital. Bernstol got in trouble for it, but he also got props from King Mordias, since he didn't like the elder Padolf to begin with. Silly Ruben... I love this new canon that Valery is really a mole. Just the kind of flair his character needed. Sadly, to quote Eugen: That's... probably not the best way I could've worded that first option. It sounds like Reese is saying, "Bitch, did you really just interrupt me?" Anyway, we're so close to Chapter 2! We'll be meeting the three units who I can only guess are the official artist's favorite characters, based on some extra sketches of them that he made. (I'll share them once we actually meet them.)
  18. I mean... Just out of curiosity, have you ever done Volo's alternate recruitment in your previous playthroughs? This is caused by a hidden skill called Hateful! I think the only other hidden skills are Robust+ (same effect as Robust, but invisible) and Vulnerable (makes it easier to be crippled). The unused skills in the game are: Safe Zone: +15 Hit and Avoid to allies within 3 hexes Leader: +5 Avoid to allies within 3 hexes Acrobat: all traversable terrain costs 1 movement Debility: all parameters are halved from their usual values (this might actually be used in Ch 12, now that I think about it...) Unlike the Military Fork, which is kinda meh, there's one unused pitchfork that's actually crazy broken: Might=8+1H, Hit=100, Weight=6, Rank=1, Durability=D, x2 strikes, Crit=100. It's the only unused pitchfork in the game, and it goes by the lovely name of SPEAR_UNUSED. It's at this point that I'd like to bring up Reese's beta portrait to everyone: He looks like such a doofus! I'd like to point out here that these text boxes are programmed in the most inconvenient way possible. They're all stitched together from different text files like this in Japanese: [stat name] by ## rose/fell ...where the difference between rising and falling is only reflected in position #3. This is all fine and dandy for Japanese, where the verb comes at the end of the sentence, but English does not do that. However, since I couldn't swap #2 and #3, I had to do this instead. [stat name] became ## greater/less ...which absolutely grates on me every time I read it. I hate it so much. This is one time that I really wish they had made a different message for every situation. This line made even less sense in the Japanese version. She says "Lebough-sama said he would try to look into it alongside the Church, but..." and trails off... Seemingly implying that a whole group of priests is somewhere twiddling their thumbs, desperately trying to remember what the word "poison" means and how it could possibly get into someone's drinking water that was drawn from a river. But you're certainly right that the implication seems to be that he's busy. On Kaga's blog, he mentions that the other three Archbishops were killed because they were traveling alongside Mordias's army when he was ambushed, so Lebough could very well be swamped with work.
  19. I know it's really strange to say, but there's something fun about writing sleazy lines like this. I think it's because they're very distinct from the rest of the dialogue, and I don't have to worry about sounding formal or proper. Not to mention that I get to throw in euphemisms galore. Bold of you to assume that Holmes didn't happen across the secret to eternal youth in his travels. never mind that he would probably immediately lose it à la the Epic of Gilgamesh Isn't it a little bizarre that they decided to come back seven and a half hours later? I guess the 1 turn = 30 minutes convention hasn't been introduced to the player yet, but still, it's extremely generous, if nothing else. I really ought to try and test the limits of this scripted fight. What happens if your unit... doesn't have a weapon? ...has a weapon on red durability? ...has a weapon with a 100% fail rate? ...has a range 1 or 2 weapon? ...has a lance equipped? ...has Wormwood equipped? ...can only use knives? The potential for hilarity is endless! ward_directs_his_army_of_fireflies_to_consume_the_enemy.png And here begins the manifold-coded part of Berwick Saga--a very large number of events have alternate lines. For instance, here, Ward will instead say "With their leader captured..." if the player managed to capture Ritchens. There is also an extra bit of introduction if Reese and Izerna did not have their talk event during the chapter. Therefore, there are 2x2=4 variants of this scene. Unfortunately, Tirnanog decided that the best way to tackle this problem was not to use "if x then y" statements, but rather to include every variant as its own separate conversation. During translation, this meant that I had to copy-paste many conversations (with only tiny changes) many times. This isn't a particularly fun piece of trivia; I just want everyone in this thread to know my pain. Finally, I was thinking about your title "The League shall fall if I'm in control" and was wondering why you chose to go with a non-rhyming name this time, but I just realized that in certain accents besides mine, "fall" and "control" can rhyme, as /fɔl/ and /kəntɹɔl/! I feel suddenly enlightened. (For the record, in my accent, they're /fɑl/ and /kəntɹɔl/.) EDIT: Oh, I know why... kind of! It's because the first time the skill received an English name in FE was in Path of Radiance, where it was exclusively Reyson's skill (so he could move again despite not being flying or mounted). In Japanese, it was just 再行動 "re-movement," but the localizers went with something song-y to fit with galdr, I guess. Then, when it became a class class skill in Radiant Dawn, they stuck with the name. (It also sounds a lot like "canter," a word for a slow gallop, which is probably a happy coincidence.)

  21. Eyyy, an LP! This should be fun! The thing is, I'm not a huge commenter on LPs because I don't often have a lot to say, but I do enjoy reading them! Hope you attract a nice flock of other readers 🙂 That said, I have two things I want to add: So, some of this background stuff you see in the game guide or strategy guide and not so much in the game itself (at least in the beginning). The Kingdom of Veria acts a bit like the Holy Roman Empire in that it's a bunch of mostly-autonomous states bound by loyalty to one crown. So, 14 of those 24 nations are actually part of the Kingdom. the Kingdom of Veria proper (lands held directly by the king) 7 duchies (loyal to the king of Veria) the Duchy of Narvia the Duchy of Bornia the Duchy of Serenia the Duchy of Yutoria the Duchy of the Highlands the Duchy of the Lowlands the Duchy of Diana 5 marches of the Barmoar region (loyal to the king of Veria) the March of Sinon the March of Mineva the March of Morrabia 2 other unnamed marches the Autonomous See of Danae (lands held by the Church, nominally loyal to the king of Veria) 7 Northern Lands (independent from Veria and each other) the Kingdom of Riana 6 other unnamed lands 3 Eastern Lands (independent from Veria and each other) the Kingdom of Ishs the Kingdom of Pesil the Kingdom of Leia Barmoar is just a name for the region, Liga is a desert under de facto control of Veria, and Lideon is an independent country unrelated to the Berwick League or the Raze Empire. A long time ago, I made this simplified map showing who controls what: The Marches are indeed what they sound like--border territories that are in the process of being settled, and which require extra management/reinforcements. On Kaga's blog, he talks about how Sinon was established only twelve years previously from unincorporated Barmoar territory, and that Bernstol is its first Margrave. Oh, you don't press the start button to see Tactical Hints, you press right on the D-pad. Very important to read those if you're going in blind! They tend to show up from time to time, so try to remember to check for them whenever these info screens show up. Anyway, good luck to you! Hope you enjoy the game!
  22. Hello, everyone! The time you've awaited for so long has finally come! Yes, the translation is finished! We've now left the "beta" stage, so now, I present to you Release Candidate v1.0! There are almost certainly a number of typos and other errors scattered about, and they will need eventual fixing, so I ask players to please try and screenshot any that they come across. (The F8 key does that in PCSX2, and they're saved in Documents\PCSX2\snaps by default on Windows.) HOWEVER! There are exactly six lines in the game that remain untranslated despite all my efforts. This is because we've been unable to find the file(s) where they're stored. These lines are pretty unobtrusive: they're lines spoken in the Epilogue by mercenary units who survived but were not recruited. Until the time comes that we can insert them, I'll translate them here for you (essentially no spoilers): Thank you again to everyone who helped support the translation and bring it to the place it is today. We couldn't have done it without you. EDIT: (Sorry, had to submit that fast before my computer died; just finishing this up on my phone.) The Serenes Forest guide pages for Berwick Saga are still a work in progress, but all the major ones you’d want to look through for a first playthrough are tidied up. I’ll also be updating my signature when I get my laptop charger back from my work tomorrow.
