Alvis held the highest position of authority in the land. He could have outright executed Manfroy on a whim. But his belief in the first amendment was his downfall.

As I said earlier, Manfroy can teleport anywhere he wants, and likely knows many places where he wouldn't be found, as a member of the Loptyr cult. It's very unlikely he'd let himself get caught.

    Trabant: "Around here, Merlock?"

    Merlock: "Yes, your Majesty."

Trabant: "Those bandits, attacking the people of Thracia... This will not be taken lightly."

Altena: "You didn't have to come all the way out here, father."

Trabant: "Well, as king, I must be aware of any and all happenings in my country. And besides, it's been a while since I have traveled with you, Altena."

Altena: "Yes, I'm happy you decided to come with us."

Trabant: "I tried to get Arione to come along as well, but he said he couldn't leave the castle unattended. Oh well..."

Altena: "He's trying hard to be of help to you, father."

Trabant: "Well, when I was his age, I was already taking charge as king. I suppose I should commend his efforts."

Altena: "I'm working hard so I can be of assistance to you two as well."

Trabant: "Yes. I want you two to lead Thracia in the future. The fertile lands in the north, and the rich minerals in the south... Thracia needs both of these to rise up to independence and peace again. A unified Thracia... My wish is to rebuild Thracia into that prosperous nation that Dine and Nova created. ...And if that process dooms me to Hell, then so be it."

    Altena: "...Father?"

    Trabant: "Altena..."

    Altena: "Yes?"

Trabant: "...The wind is picking up. I suppose we should leave the rest to Merlock and start heading back."

    Altena: "Yes, father."

    Trabant: "Merlock!"

    Merlock: "Yes?"

Trabant: "I'm leaving the rest to you. With all these troops, I trust you won't fail. Hunt down the bandits and kill them all. Give them what they deserve for making our people suffer!"

Alvis got his son killed. And yeah, I'd count him as a terrible dad. Having your son taken in by an evil cult that supplement his soul with that of an evil dragon god is pretty irresponsible parenting.

It's not like he could do anything to prevent it. Manfroy can teleport anywhere he wants. Just see how easily he kidnapped Deirdre in Gen 1.

Also, wouldn't Deirdre also be considered, then? I mean, she's the heir to Naga, yet she just gets herself killed easily at the beginning. She could have easily ended the entire game then and there with Naga, which is in Belhalla at this point. She would be just as much to blame for Julius' fate.

Lester being Lex son was never considered canon  ....

And it was never confirmed if Beowulf or Finn are Nanna and Delmud fathers, the developers said it's who the player choses even if more likely it's one of them ...

Well, Delmund can use the Beo Sword in FE5. That's kinda confirmation.

Wow i forgot that Corrin can date Percy 🤣🤣🤣 She is really screwed in the head...  I like to think Arthur and Kaze had no idea what was going on...

True, but as far I remember it's never revealed if Lewyn retained his personality and followed Forsethy's will or the dragon took his body completely, Kaga in his interview  let it open to interpretation. Considering Fire Emblem lore, the second option is more likely though...

Considering he cries for Tailtiu, he clearly does still possess some will of his own. And in act 1 he is clearly shown to be neglectful, and if his treatment of Silvia is anything to go by, probably not a great husband either.

The hawks and Skrimir are great, but I find it hard to agree on Ranulf and Volug - the former is a cat, which is quick to revert. The latter is great during part 1, but struggles near the end of said part.

Well, 0% growths Volug carries the DB in part 3. Stat boosters/laguz stones fix most of his issues.

More or less every problem you talked about roots in how they didn't just make Edelgard the undisputed big enemy but instead coped-out by including TWSITD to serve as a way for her to at least take advantage of dastardly antics without being too repulsive an option for the player to join with unironically.

That's definitely another option, and one which could work very well. However, the game would need to make more of an effort to make Edelgard fully evil, as currently none of her actions are enough to make her such. Her character would have to be drastically changed in order for it to work.

I've often reflected that the most morally grey Fire Emblem game is Genealogy of the Holy War. Which is amusing as I also think it's simultaneously the most black and white. A lot of the antagonists are genuinely decent people forced into a conflict they lack the proper context for and believe they are undeniably right in their views, or at least as equally condemnable as their enemies. But then you have the child murdering blood sacrificing cultists who seem like they're in some sort of competition for most evil people of the century.

Yes, I would agree there. What Three Houses failed to understand, however, is the "morally grey" characters in FE4 do not work on their own, but are reliant on the big bad behind the scenes. They were all being manipulated in some way by the Loptyr Cult, be it Manfroy, Veld, Julius, etc.. Edelgard was clearly an attempt to copy these characters, but completely fell flat, as they forgot you can't just take Arvis and make him the main villain. That wasn't his role in Genealogy. The only way to do this would be to change the character to the point where they would no longer be recognisable.

And that's kinda the issue with Edelgard; they don't know what to do with her. Sometimes it seems they're going for just the big bad emperor, but she's always so whiny, weak, and dependent on professor-senpai-sama-senpai-sama you wonder how she got anything done to begin with. TWSITD seem like a last minute attempt to shove in a manipulative force behind the scenes, but, well, we all know how that turned out. So in the end you get some kind of weird type of anti-hero. Confusing and inconsistent writing does not equal complexity of characters.

  9. Fire Emblem has never been about moral grey, nor has it ever pulled it off. 3H definitely had a weak villain presence, Edelgard and Rhea included. Both were incredibly confusingly and inconsistently written, it felt as if the writers themselves weren't sure what they wanted the characters to be. This is especially noticeable in Rhea.

So, I think 3H would have benefitted greatly from a stronger big bad presence in the background. This doesn't necessarily need to be some Gharnef or Loptyr, just look at Sephiran. TWSITD felt like an attempt at this, but ultimately went nowhere and were completely pointless.

In short, Fire Emblem definitely needs some form of big bad for the stories to work.

  10. Favorite cast is FE4. The characters felt much more toned down and realistic; gimmicks were kept to a minimum, and the focus was on what happened to them, their own story arcs. The game also has some of my favorite characters in the series, Arvis, Julia, Brigid, Azel, Altena to name a few.

Second favorite is Tellius. While this cast had a few more gimmicks, I still found the majority of them compelling. Even the RD newcomers, despite not being fleshed out as much, I mostly liked. Favorites include Naesala, Sanaki, Sephiran, Zelgius, and Callil.

Third favorite is Thracia 776. This game has several characters I warmed to through their in game performance, such as Lara and Pan, but I also liked how grounded and down-to-earth this cast felt. They weren't some grand nobles like Fe4, yet felt fully integrated into the world of Judgral. Favorites include Mareeta, Pan, Lara, Salem and Lithis.

Least favorite is Three Houses. This cast felt heavy on the anime tropes and gimmicks, especially in the story dialogue, which imo is the most important part of character writing. I didn't warm to any of them much at all, but several annoyed me to no end, such as Bernadetta, Petra, Marianne and especially Byleth. The villains were also weak and all over the place, as mentioned before by others.

  11. - Base and Talk Conversations replacing supports

    - A move away from an anime art style to a style more similar to the Tellius series.

    - The return of the magic triangle and magic class splits (Fire mage, Thunder mage, Wind mage, etc.)

    - Removal of gambits and combat arts

    - Return of the weapon triangle

    - Removal of reclassing and units being able to use all weapons, like in 3H

    - A larger cast of playable characters with recruits scattered throughout the playthrough

    - Return of secret events and unlockable Gaiden chapters

    - Enemy recruits! The more ridiculous requirements the better. Xavier, PoR Shinon or Hannibal style.

    - NG+ secrets and new characters, RD style.

    - Bring back Mage Fighters!

    - Return of battle themes instead of the Storm versions of the map themes playing instead.

    - Varied objective types. I'd especially like to see the return of escape all, Thracia style. With a minimum deployment, of course.

    - Removal of avatar, or any kind of self insert whatsoever.

    - No turnwheel, but keep casual mode for newcomers.

    - Tellius or FE4 style base, rather than the monastery.

  12. I hate the turnwheel mechanic, and it's possibly my least favorite mechanic introduced in Fire Emblem to date.

Firstly, it takes away the whole point of permadeath. Units are supposed to die. Part of the fun of Fire Emblem is adapting your team to fill the holes left by unit deaths. I believe Kaga himself said he designed the games to be played in this way. If you're resetting or rewinding for every unit death, then you may as well be playing on casual mode. It's the same thing.

Also, Three Houses forces it upon you. Every time you lose your leader, you're forced to turnwheel, removing the penalty for poor unit placement and strategy and thus encouraging reckless play. Three Houses is also obviously designed around you resetting for every unit death; just look at the lack of late-game recruits.

I fear that the turnwheel will steer Fire Emblem towards more ambush-heavy game design, as well as games designed around full survival. Casual mode already exists to ease people into the series, which is an optional thing not shoved down the throats of those wanting a challenge. So I say do away with the turnwheel entirely.

After all, Fire Emblem is a game about war. It would be unrealistic for everyone to survive.

I know, opinion and all but really? I know the map design isn't great but even worse than Echoes, Awakening, Revelations and Birthright?

At least Awakening, Revelations and Birthright didn't make me sit through playing the same already terrible maps over and over.

Echoes is far more interesting to optimise, and funnily enough also had more varied maps, and dungeons were all different and a nice change of pace.

Three Houses, aside from the constant repetition, also has the honour of having some of the worst maps (Petra's paralogue, BE chapter 17 and endgame, to name a few). I'd rather deal with Revelations gimmicks.
