I'm debating on whether or not to continue Radiant Dawn this week since I'll be out of town and away from my computer on the 9th to the 23rd and would rather not abruptly stop in the middle of part 2 or something. ¡Ay Carmela!

I keep the promises I make. She will at the very least damage the final boss significantly if she can't land the final blow. 🎉🎉🎉 I think in part because of its nuance. We spent most of last game dunking on Daein and even I as the player saw them first and foremost as the typical bad guy country and the climax of the story was Daein being conquered. However, now that the story focused on Daein, there was very human understanding of how the people feel, it's not necessarily that every Daein loved King Ashnard and long to conquer Crimea in retaliation, but they are still humans who want a sense of freedom and political autonomy. It reminds me more of a real country, in that it has historical dubiousness, and the government is not often righteous, but good people among the common populace are still there, and they deserve fulfilling lives as much as anyone else. Oh no, I loaded to an earlier save, he's still alive.

It's a real shame that I accidentally got Jill killed and when going to a previous save before this stat increase, and in leveling up again he gained a single stat in luck and nothing else. I wouldn't say that exactly. Rhea feels nuanced to me because she feels like the most consistent antagonist in Three Houses. Her actions in CF don't feel like a good character going bad for no reason but rather a morally grey character who was at least always on the tipping point reacting to one hell of a trigger and going insane. The weight of her trauma and her actions feel consistent. I can't say for Azure Moon as I've never played and have only seen story summaries but I have heard the idea that Edelgard becomes...whatever that thing is because she didn't have Byleth around to calm her down which is a pretty shitty reason I'll give you that. Edelgard seems her most interesting when she is an antagonist but not the final boss. Now Nemesis may not be nuanced but I still think he's interesting, he has no dialogue but the lyrics alone of God Shattering Star give some intriguing implications on his motives. Also I kind of like how he's the only one who's pretty much just some guy. Like Rhea and Edel turn into huge giant monsters yet Nemesis over here is just a really strong angry guy. I kind of wish they did that more honestly.

Now begins the Fiona Chronicles. Here's the thing, the bad guys can be fascists and still be interesting villains, as any story with fascists in it is a story about nationality, culture, and the path of least resistance. Ultimately that's a topic more complicated than FE has ever tackled but hey, a man can dream. So imagine this, there's a sequel to Three Houses that takes place after the events of Crimson Flower. The Adrestians have successfully reunited the continent under the banner of revolution but they quickly learn how easy it is for the instability of violent revolutions fought in the name of freedom and justice to fall into authoritarian regimes, and the main characters have to deal with that. Doesn't even have to be a TH sequel really, any game can have that kind of post-war setting. If I remember correctly, the closest we got to inner-political struggles were some side missions in Verdant Wind and Edelgard axing a bunch of the nobles when she came in power. If they absolutely had to, they could make it like some of TH's final bosses where they are still at the very least interesting characters. That's what I would fear most honestly. Eh, I can vibe with that too I guess.

"That's why I make sure to up my light magic by an extra 500 volts so that my enemies wont even feel their critical innards be fried" Or... whatever happens with light magic. Honestly I would be fuckin' ecstatic if the next Fire Emblem was purely focused on inner political intrigue inside of one country and an eventual Civil War.

So like, in a game where they give me a bunch of promoted units pretty much right off the bat, I have to imagine the difficulty curve in this game is insane. Hornets do indeed have hairs but they are so tiny you can barely notice them with the naked eye which implies this guy got a real good close up of a hornet at some point. So I couldn't get a screenshot of it because it happened so fast but you'll have to believe me when I say that the enemy manged to get crits three separate times on my allies, killing them instantly. So is it bad that I feel this game has done a better job establishing the culture of Daein within the first five chapters than Three Houses did for all of it's nations across the entire main story? I'm surprised there aren't as many FE characters who's whole gimmick is that they aren't conventionally attractive. Japanese RPGs always seem to have a thing against people with big lips or body deformations they have no effect over. The best I can think of is Brady who is meant to be a sweetheart despite his looks, but it doesn't help that he's a child unit that the average player may not even see. I haven't played all the games though, so... Xander may be a beardless prince in game but we know for certain that one day...

Honestly when I first saw the the title it struck a nerve because I assumed it was something about how "Oh man wouldn't it have been so great if there weren't any natives so things wouldn't be as complicated!" but I see what they're talking about. And yeah, a massive portion of goods coming into rich countries comes from exploitation of natural resources from colonial countries, it was true back then, and it is true now with neo-colonialism. My ancestors were cultivating stuff like Chocolate and Sugar for thousands of years before the European invasion, some continue to cultivate them as we did back then to keep the tradition alive. It's not gone or anything like because, well, we still exist. We've definitely come a long way from people thinking that American crops have always been everywhere, to knowing that they were in the Americas but thinking it was only when the Europeans arrived when they started being cultivated, to knowing that they've always been cultivated, and it was through colonial exploitation that it spread throughout the old world.
