What If FE Mobile Is A Mobile Version of FE Cipher?
bookofholsety replied to JamesEmblem's topic in Fire Emblem Heroes
far as i'm concerned this is the best case scenario, and by far the most logical way for cipher to ever get localised -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
so they shouldn't refer to each other by the honourific "lord" because.... they refer to each other by an honourific whose most common and efficient english translation is "lord". ok sure whatever you see, fe4's script is extremely conscious of social class, and among the royal, noble and knightly members of its class this is heavily reflected in their speech and modes of address. they all refer to each other with the exact socially appropriate honourific given their standings relative to each other. yes, siggy, lex and azel are all of the same social rank, but that's kind of the point of their honourific addresses toward each other: they're all part of high society and there's a social expectation to refer to each other in respectful, honourific terms. the only times the honourifics come off are if they're really buddy-buddy with each other (e.g. sigurd with quan or eldigan, or azel with lex or taillte) or if they don't respect each other (e.g. chagall with literally everyone). omitting these honorifics would be tone-deaf and in defiance of this and indicate familarity and/or disrespect that's just not there at all. sure, it might fly in a game with a more cartoonish tone like fe13, where a knight punches her lord in the face and it's laughed off. i don't even mean that as a slight against fe13 for once; this is just an area in which fe4 is fundamentally different. it might not be important but it's still a useful part of how the game sets the tone of the relationships of its countries and kings basically, the lord/lady honourifics are not going anywhere. they were in the jp script, so they are remaining here -
actually, i have a bit of a question. would it be possible for you to provide some directions on how to call models and classes such as these into being present in gameplay, for the benefit of those who might like to reproduce your findings and maybe document them in greater detail? i for one am pretty curious and would love to poke around with the generic herons and adult!sanaki in particular in greater detail, but i haven't the foggiest idea of how to go about it. i'd appreciate if you could give some insight into how you pulled these off. what little i'm able to do with action replays is starting to wear a little thin, even if it's hilarious

Do the Verdanians speak with any kind of accent?
bookofholsety replied to FionordeQuester's topic in NES and SNES Era
okay, no. no. that is not how this shit works! you can like a localisation and still be interested in how a work was originally presented! they are not mutually exclusive! if you seriously think that such low-level, pedantic namewank over people's personal preferences is reason enough to declare that absolutely nobody has ever cared about the original text, i have some very bad news for you like, we get it. "hurr hurr localisation is the devil and bill trinen is a witch". you've made your totally unnuanced point perfectly clear a million times already -
Why are all the characters so Tsundere?
bookofholsety replied to Alandrage's topic in Fire Emblem Fates
because of the first rule of animu: Tsunderes Tsell Tshitloads -
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/2266/fire-emblem-path-of-radiance-interview i'm not going to mince words here. you're welcome to be critical of official localisation name change decisions, but if you seriously think that they're in any way actively disrespectful toward intsys or done without their consent, you're a fucking idiot and you need to learn how localisations actually work

FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
it's iconic because it's a shite, tone-deaf line translation that undermines what's supposed to be a serious scene. as amusing as i find it, it's one of the many reasons that this translation exists at all while we're on the subject, fun fact -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)

alternatively: sacrifice him to blume at the end of chapter 7. ovo's cavalry at the start of chapter 8 might even be able to do the job eventually with their range and wta. imo it's not all that difficult to sacrifice shanan to the Balmung Glitch Gods, and just about any scenario where you put One Man against Overwhelming Odds will probably do it eventually -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
that's definitely not going to happen, since it veers too far into actively changing gameplay outside of correcting glitches for my tastes. besides, the balmung transfer glitch isn't particularly hard to execute -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
thanks much. it's just as i thought: pretty typical missing line break shenanigans. should be fairly easy to correct (incidentally, just for my own reference, noticed another issue pop up: oifey's farewell skips the part with his wife. i get the feeling that that's the sort of thing dds should attend to, lest i break it even more) -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)

could i have your save file, so i can take a look at this? i think i've got an idea of what happened here, but i'd like to test out the save file to make sure -
Why is the term "Beorc" even a thing?

FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
ooh, so there it is! i vividly recall running into something like this it years and years ago, when i first played fe4 on a pretty old build of the old translation*. at the time, i think i managed to get around it by just upgrading to one of twilkitri's more recent serlis-era builds. in hindsight i was never able to figure out what specifically i'd done wrong aside from dismount seliph, so it's kind of reassuring to see it documented like that on the wikia *christ, i wish i remembered how old this one is, if only for Dumb Historical Purposes -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
okay i just have to say: if you're seriously still wringing your hands about vergil being Bad And Wrong And Evil four years later, after it didn't even make it into the goddamn patch, i can't exactly say you're making a convincing case for taking your worries seriously (op updated with beta 7) -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
the solution there is to identify and rectify those bugs in turn, not to throw our hands up in the air and say "there's nothing we can do so we're not even going to try, enjoy your rng depleting itself and screwing you over, everybody". there's a reason we're in beta here -
FE4 Translation Patch (Open Beta v7)
bookofholsety replied to bookofholsety's topic in NES and SNES Era
don't get me wrong, i can absolutely see where you're coming from, but i just don't agree. i figure that if we can fix harmful glitches, then it's absolutely in our best interests to do just that to improve the experience; the fewer glitches people have to contend with, the better. i don't believe in or plan on actively tweaking stats or gameplay balance by any means (with the one exception of correcting hilda's holy blood, which is basically cosmetic and doesn't impact her gameplay) and what we're aiming for here is still the same gameplay experinece as what you'd get in a vanilla jp rom, just with fewer bugs. bug fixes certainly aren't unprecedented as far as fan translations go at the very least, i don't see releasing two versions as a good solution at all; we already have to juggle releases for both headered and unheadered roms in both ips and xdelta format, and fragmenting the project into two versions is just a needless complication on top of that, particularly when one version by its very nature would be inferior to the other -
A new take on the Camus archetype
bookofholsety replied to blah the Prussian's topic in General Fire Emblem
>quan >levelheaded >quan, Part Three of the Greatest Bro Trio In Jugdral History, whose partners in crime include sigurd, He Of The Accidental Wars, and eldigan, who needs no introduction >quan, who was described by his own mother as "rash" >quan, who was perpetually paranoid and warmongery about thracia, to the point that his actions really gave the other manster district rulers the shits (this is discussed in either leonster's fall or fe5, and hinted at in his introduction in fe4 when sigurd talks about how "Aren't your hands full there, keeping an eye on Thracia?") >quan, who had like zero respect for any of his enemies ("the thugs of Verdane", "They're like wild hyenas, Ethlyn!") look, i love quan. he's a fine character and was incredibly fun to translate. but level-headed he ain't. the dude isn't known for his nuanced appreciation of the affairs of state, and certainly wouldn't have had the ability to talk eldigan down out of that clusterfuck. i mean, if anything, ethlyn is the one with the level head in that particular marriage -
holy shit. hoooooooooooly shit. hooooooooooooooooooooooooly shit. i didn't even realise that a pegasus panorama set by wada is something i needed this much. juno looks a bit off but otherwise holy hell

Making of FE4: Name Changes and Scapped Elements
bookofholsety replied to VincentASM's topic in NES and SNES Era
pretty neat. too bad there's not all that much to go on in either that book or in the game itself as far as development tidbits go; our search wasn't exactly exhaustive, but we didn't really find anything of particular significance in this department when we were working on the translation. still kinda disappointed about that -
ah okay. way i see it, just about every artist has their off days; for all her consistency, wada's camilla wasn't very good, or at least suffered all the traditional Camilla Problems
