Holy War and Thracia remiagined as one game
bookofholsety replied to Jotari's topic in NES and SNES Era
i was actually thinking about the avatar issue myself just a few days ago in the context of fe4, so i might as well weigh in. for better or worse, it's pretty obvious avatars aren't going anywhere, and while intsys has a horrid track record with the things, i don't believe that an avatar makes a game worse by its very nature. in competent hands, an avatar could do okay (while i'm not fluent in their games, i'd cite bioware's works as examples of self-insert protagonists who share many of the fe avatar line's hallmarks but actually do okay with it because they have something resembling decent writers), and as far as i'm concerned that's the problem with them so far: intsys is short on competent hands in the writing department at the moment now, i can absolutely see why people aren't happy with the idea of an avatar assuming the role of a pre-existing character, but at this point i kind of see it as the lesser of two evils. fe12 showed us that implementing an avatar as an entirely new character in a pre-existing story is a complete disaster under intsys's current direction, so with this in mind i feel like there's some merit in the replace-a-character approach: namely, that their role will be constrained by the pre-existing story. barring massive rewrites, an avatar in oifey's clothing is still oifey, so there's a limit on how god-mode centralising they could be. they'd have a distinct and valuable presence in the story, just like in the original, but working strictly in the bounds of oifey's original role would keep the avatar from being a dangerously centralising force that said, i would go minimalist in the avatar-ification of a character slot. name, gender, appearance and stat customisation would be fair game, and make them playable in both gens, but the characterisation would remain more or less the same, and i'd absolutely shy away from selecting holy blood or whatever. whoever you're replacing, it's easier to keep their origin - and thus their holy blood - consistent across the board. as far as i'm concerned, the right way to pull something like this is to keep their character effectively exactly the same, save for the ability to name and design them fwiw, i personally favour turning lewyn into an avatar. yes, yes, i know, but hear me out. with his current backstory and setup he'd be pretty comfortable in the company of fe13 and 14's avatars and otherwise ticks all the boxes to make him a viable candidate for an avatar transplant (mysterious traveler? check. from a faraway super-special nation? check. fancy dragon-given powers? check. unique class? check. amzing holy weapon? check. present in both gens? check), but his big advantage is that while he's very relevant throughout the game, he's decidedly not the only relevant thing and does a pretty solid job of contributing his part to the story without distracting from sigurd/seliph and devolving the entire game into a lewyn-centric circus of course, ideally none of this would be necessary, but modern intsys likes their avatars, and more importantly, so do all the $$$$ that they're getting. the way i see it, avatars are now inevitable unless fe14 flops horribly in localisation (and the chances of that are pretty low), so it's worth thinking about how to improve them by any means necessary. if it means averting robin-esque damage to the story, i'm all for sacrificing lewyn or oifey -
look normally i'd happily be the first to shit all over fe13 but how old are you? seriously, we're talking a couple of "asses", "craps" and "damns" here. hardly worth calling THE END TIMES

What Stops Other Units Using PRF Weapons?
bookofholsety replied to Jotari's topic in General Fire Emblem
just throwing this out there: with magic it's occasionally explained as being specifically locked using a spell; for instance, in fe5 august says this about the kia staff: it's possible that some weapons could be sealed in that way which could result in an effect like the whole lucina-sibling failing to cut with falchion thing if i had to guess, one way of doing it for more common weapons might be a matter of comfort. for instance, ettard could be very specifically customised to ike's swordfighting style and grip, to the point that just about everybody else finds it physically uncomfortable or awkward to use. rapiers could fall into this gulf with respect to how they're noble weapons; perhaps people of more common blood, who are used to the idea of swords as relatively thick or heavy, just don't feel comfortable waving around something so small, thin or relatively lightweight? -
on one hand, the post is pretty obviously a joke and not even trying to pass itself off as a serious claim about the localisation. the banana peel and religion -> meme things are the equivalent of the author beating you over the head with a mallet and screaming "DO YOU GET IT NOW WHY AREN'T YOU LAUGHING" on the other hand, holy shit if the nintendo cosplay stage was real i would actually willingly pay money for the game

the way everything but nes/snes is handled is very much a cosmetic thing. it keeps the index relatively brief and tidy while losing exactly none of the content's organisation nes/snes is very much the exception in this case, as the traffic there is low enough that it allegedly doesn't really warrant six game-specific subforums

bookofholsety replied to AzimuthFE's topic in NES and SNES Era
hey, i don't suppose you'd be interested in coming on board and contributing graphics-ways for the translation patch? the hacking side of the project's back in action, and i figured that it might be a lot easier on the project to have somebody who works exclusively to the graphics tasks. i figure you already know your way around fe4 in this regard and are poking around with this sort of localisation aim in mind, so why not? sorry for the nuisance -

okay, let me stop you right there first of all, localisation =/= censorship. i mean, i understand why it's easy to assume otherwise. animu dubbers like 4kids and saban have done a hell of a job of convincing the world that anything that's not a straight, 1:1 translation will involve laughable amounts of censorship. but there was very little with fe13's localisation which counts as censorship. fe13 absolutely had a lot of changes with a huge number of conversations recontextualised in various ways, but calling most of those censorship is a hell of a reach; as a friend put it, "I don't think Henry was changed because he offended someone's moral sensibilities. I think he was changed because they found his original schtick melodramatic and retooled him for some cheap laughs instead." with this in mind, i count maybe three things in fe13 that actually got legitimately censored: the "companions" label, "boingy bits" in eu, and the thorp swimsuit in na. they're all such tiny changes that it really doesn't matter in the slightest (well, except thorp, but the censorship made that image actually amusing and interesting). so sure, there's a bit of censorship, but it's really not enough to justifiably raise the spectre of CENSORSHIP DOOM as far as fe14 goes, i will say this: waifu-fondling will be gone, and good fucking riddance. the incest issues with the supports are a bit more interesting to think about in this context: i can see most of the non-avatar ones waved through by playing the companions card again, especially in the variable case of secondgen cousins caused by parent choices. the avatar ones are guaranteed to be scrutinised a lot more heavily: partly because the whole confession cg thing makes it a lot harder to pretend the romantic overtones aren't there, and partly because a lot of the time the entire point of the conversations (ESPECIALLY camilla's) seems to amount to "hee hee look at us we're so incesty :3"

Glitch? Enemy Sniper promotes to Shinon lookalike
bookofholsety replied to unjashfan's topic in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
they might have the higher caps (which are still lower than their tier-3 counterparts for the most part, incidentally) and the ss ranks, but they're still second-tier classes for all intents and purposes. a part 4 halberdier is still treated as a halberdier, etc they don't outside of hacking, which is what i was getting at with "whatever means" -
Glitch? Enemy Sniper promotes to Shinon lookalike
bookofholsety replied to unjashfan's topic in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
as far as the shinon part goes, that would be because no generic class models exist for tier 3 classes at all. there's only personalised ones for each playable character of that class plus bosses. if you make a generic enemy/npc promote through whatever means, like what happened here, they'll use the model of one of the playable members of that class because hey, they've got to use some model or another, don't they? there's probably a more sophisticated way to explain this, as well as an answer as to why it went with shinon specifically, but i'm not versed enough to be sure about those details -
Marth How to do DLC on Emulator?

the fan translation comes bundled with a save file that has the dlc enabled, iirc -
April 29th possible release date for Fates?
bookofholsety replied to Shadow Stalker X's topic in Fire Emblem Fates
if that isn't the release date, my gut feeling is that it won't be too far off it in either direction. my money's still on sooner rather than later given the e3 footage -
i'd go the other direction and have no justification for it at all. i figure that if they're going to shoehorn babymaking into games whose setups don't call for it, they may as well drop the pretense and be honest and upfront about why it's there, like so: "er silas why do you suddenly have a daughter" "because we need that sweet, sweet fe13 cashpile. why else would i have one?"

Transformation Gauge or Dragon/Beast Stone
bookofholsety replied to MCProductions's topic in General Fire Emblem
not really as far as the hunting thing goes, bear in mind that they'd spent the entire conversation in their humanoid state so it checks out that they'd have been rested enough to transform at will- 48 replies

oh hell no. i honestly don't see why the existence of other fe games with fully capitalised subtitle logos makes doing the same to this one anything resembling necessary (especially given there are now just as many fe games which, well, don't do that). making it not look like ass was tedious enough the first time around

someday i am going to have that one framed and hung above a fireplace or something

Is it worth buying the DS FE games?
bookofholsety replied to henrymidfields's topic in Nintendo DS Era
fe11 is decidedly not going to blow you away any time soon, and it suffers from not really attempting to do much to enhance the original narrative, but it's quick and simple and some of its writing contributions are surprisingly nice; for instance, i adore it for the lovely characterisation arc it gave marth. fe12, on the other hand, is sort of its opposite. if fe11's problem is not changing enough (and it is), fe12's problem is that they fiddled with the source way too much, warping the story to accommodate avatar ego-stroking and mishandling much of the characterisation established in the original material (with marth in particular being really fucked over compared to fe11). both are very simple and minimalist in terms of gameplay, but have got some decent stuff to offer fe12 is region locked, fe11 is not. if you've got a wii u, you'll be better off picking fe11 up via virtual console than you would be tracking down a hard copy since it'll likely be cheaper. as far as 12 goes, i'd say go for it if you've got another game you want to import and thus something else to better justify picking up a japanese 3ds -
Creating a FE4 patch. Looking for thoughts/feedback.
bookofholsety replied to AzimuthFE's topic in NES and SNES Era
i really ought to comb through the game properly and sort out everything that's going to need a Graphical Change at some point. you'd think it's the sort of trivial thing i'd have done right off the bat when i still didn't really know what i was doing, but evidently not -
while i don't know for sure, i'm inclined to say no because let's face it, who the hell has even heard of our translation? :P that said, even if it was ours, i absolutely would not recommend buying a repro from those guys and others like them. selling fan translations for $$$$ is shady as shit if you want to play a fan translation on the original hardware, flashcarts are the way to go
