Do you know how funny it is to have 20 strength on a basic unit but 8 to everything else? I love it. Especially strength. Why does Raphael need speed? Just kill them. Don't give them a counterattack. That 85 hp means he'll take those doubles even if ya mess up.

Good to know someone else gets it!

I like 'em, they're pretty cool. Mostly I just like guys who hit really hard at the expense of everything else, because that's what a man would do. The same applies to an immovable wall.

Eventually I will play Thracia and report back on Marty.

If I ever do play Thracia, Marty will definitely be part of my team.  Having a base of 0 in both Skill and Speed is too funny to not use.

  3. What do you think of units in Fire Emblem with lopsided stats or growths, where they're great in one or two stats, but terrible in other areas (Examples are units like Marty in Thracia, Barth in Binding Blade, Nyx in Fates, Arden in Heroes and Raphael in Three Houses)?  Do you like or dislike them (and who's your favorite if you do like them)?

My first shiny was a Absol in sapphire, heck I hadn’t even seen a normal one when I found it.

My first was a Zubat in FireRed.

To list off the others: A Gastly in FireRed, a Paras in FireRed, a Geodude in Diamond, a Tentacool in Emerald, a Sudowoodo in Platinum, and a Rockruff in Ultra Moon.

I have personally found 4 shinies in my entire Pokémon gaming. Not including forced shiny or ones gotten thru trades.

Not counting forced shinies or ones I've gotten from trades, I've found 7 in my history with Pokemon.  I've even seen Norman give Wally a shiny Zigzagoon for that catching tutorial in Emerald.

Honestly, I don’t think making them easier to find is bad what makes them lose their luster if people cheating/hacking and then selling them. Nothing like grinding out a shiny for who knows how long just for someone else to buy it. Shit… Pokémon has gone “free to play”.

There's people who do that?  And here I thought the people who shiny hunt for god knows how long while posting videos saying "OMG, I FOUND A SHINY!" had no life.

I've always had the mindset of "If it happens it happens.", so I've never tried shiny hunting.  Doesn't feel organic or genuine compared to having that 1 in 8192 encounter actually happen.

  7. One aspect of Pokemon that I felt lost it's way in more recent generations is Shiny Pokemon.  With Game Freak continuing to add ways of making them easier to find, they don't feel special anymore compared to the 1 in 8192 odds of finding one back in the older generations.

What do you think of this?  Do you think Shiny Pokemon are still worth being excited for, or do you think they've become too mainstream and lost their luster?

HAHAHAHAHA! Okay on one hand it's awesome that Elimine was finally freed from the Mario Kart jail, but on the other hand they really picked her just to not pick Athos...

It's funny because they are close to running out of female characters who CAN be Mythics according to the current rules, so after they give us Hanon, Ashunera, Nada Kuya, Fjalar, Njorun and MAYBE Artemis they will have to give us Athos or another male mythic, right? Am I forgetting anyone else?

They won't actually be such asshats that they will give us Mythic Cethleann, right?

Seems that so far, the non-OC male mythics we've gotten have been Duma, arguably Bramimond, and... that's it. Ouch.

Cool, I don't need to say anything on the matter.  As long as other people get it.

  9. Maybe cause they wouldn't want players to have high powered moves early if it were based on number of times used rather then learning it at a certain level.

I know this isn't the same thing that you're suggesting, but in the Mystery Dungeon games starting with Gates to Infinity, there was a mechanic called Move Growth, where using a move like Quick Attack a lot would improve the move, like making it do more damage, be more accurate (because accuracy isn't the same in those games other then the never miss moves like Swift or Shock Wave), and increase the number of PP the move has so it could be used more.  Best part about it is that it the upgrades apply to all Pokemon who know the move, so having multiple Pokemon know useful moves like Discharge or Brutal Swing is a good idea, plus it makes moves that would normally be weak (like Quick Attack) potentially remain useful for the whole game.

Adult Tiki is on the rebound, bitches!
Femleth though, get that predictable garbage out of here. I'm changing my votes to Bernie out of spite. (And because my choice didn't even make Top 20, as expected, so I choose to cause problems on purpose.)

    Chrom is completely expected.
Seliph is completely unexpected, holy shit??? He kicked Manleth down really far!

It'd be great if Adult Tiki and F!Byleth won the female division, so I hope they both stay in the top 2 spots!  Adult Tiki hasn't gotten an alt since the 1st year of Heroes, and F!Byleth could use better art after her Legendary.  She's also better then that spaz Bernadetta.

As for the male division, was hoping M!Robin would be doing better, but Chrom is fine too, and I can be happy for fans of FE4 with Seliph doing good even though I know nothing about his character aside from family relations.

I'd rather they not reveal anything at all for the entire voting period to cut down on tactical voting.

I feel like that's what cost F!Byleth last year.  People got distracted by Gatekeeper (or focused on helping him) in the male division so Marianne could sneak her way into a winning spot in the female division.

I wouldn't consider that a very good idea imho. I already dislike how Corrin has to shoulder the lion's share of the combat duties in the first few maps because most of your other units at that point can't take hits well. Mozu wouldn't help much on that end, as she can't really take hits.

As though right on cue when attempting to vouch for Mozu, you show up.  It's called using Skills and Pair Up, and you have both a healer and a dancer.  If you can't train Mozu with Rev's early units, then that says something about you the player, because those units are perfect to get her up to speed.  This is not an argument I want to have here, cause it's somewhat off topic.

Revelation 11-17, I suppose, although I'd say Revelation 11-17 is a direct consequence of Revelation's earlier maps being much too slow to give you PCs! The game devs had already committed to Revelation being a route where you'd get a much larger roster than BR/CQ so taking longer to give them to you is especially baffling.

Honestly, I wish they instead kept it to only the neutral characters who joined you no matter your path while throwing in a few exceptions like Keaton, Kaden, Rinkah, Hiyato, and Flora.  Rev's roster is too bloated.

  14. 2 hours ago, Dark Holy Elf said:

To me it's basically unbelievable that as late as Chapter 8 in Revelation I only have:

    • a lord
    • a dancer
    • a staff user (who admittedly has some combat)
    • a temp character who can't gain supports and has memetically bad stat growths, and thus has almost no long-term value

So I really only have one unit I want to give most of the combat duty to. That's not much fun. Fire Emblem, in my opinion at least, is at its best when I have a variety of different combat units and I have to decide how best to use them to face off against different types/formations of enemies.

Fair enough in terms of lacking variety,  though you did forget Mozu whose available after beating Chapter 7.  Rev is the only route where she doesn't have major competition for EXP as soon as she's available, so if Corrin is overleveled, Mozu is an option.  Usually switch out Gunter for her.

Probably gonna hand this one to Conquest. Even if you don't like Conquest, I don't think any of the common complaints (difficulty, enemy skills, etc) are so prevalent early on that it'd stop you from enjoying it. It's at a level where hardcore players can enjoy it as a casual challenge while casual players can enjoy it as a hardcore challenge. You also still have a good bit of flexibility available in terms of reclassing options and such, so you can play around with Paladin Jakob, Strategist Felicia, reclassed Corrin, whatever strikes your fancy really.

Conquest is my pick as well.  I like how chapters 7 thru 10 give you a good chance to get a feel for all the units who join in that time frame to see who you stick with long term, and chapters 8 and 10 I find fun to play in general.

Honorable mention goes to Path of Radiance, because of how well it handles the fact that you're part of a mercenary company, though I do agree that it sucks not having a convoy for most of that time.

And Revelation unfortunately drops a couple terrible gimmicks on you (darkness, snow shovelling) in the early maps, while taking too long to give you new PCs compared to Birthright and Conquest.

Revelation gets my dishonorable mention due to the gimmicks, however I do like how you don't get many units early on.  Never liked it when you get swamped with new units like in Birthright's early game or Revelation Chapters 11 thru 17.

  16. I know many others gave their grievances about Volug not being here already, but it's truly baffling that he's missing.  Instead we got a 3rd Nailah and another Azura (even though it's been a while since the last one).  At least Deen made it in, so that's another character I can check off my list.

  17. While it doesn't have recruitable enemies, I can recommend CrossCode.  It has RPG progression elements and a skill grid where you can choose what abilities to learn and stats to increase.  Music is pretty good, has a likeable characters, but has Zelda like dungeons (granted harder then in Zelda) that will test you.

  18. In no real order:

    1: Nolan (Radiant Dawn)

    2: Gregor (Awakening)

    3: Gonzales (Binding Blade) ✓

    4: Elice (Shadow Dragon)

    5: Douglas (Binding Blade)

    6: Hanneman (Three Houses)

    7: Barth (Binding Blade)

8: Marcus (Binding Blade or Blazing Sword)

    9: Oswin (Blazing Sword)

    10: Mycen (Shadows of Valentia)

    11: Geoffrey (Path of Radiance)

    12: Bastian (Path of Radiance)

    13: Lucia (Path of Radiance)

14: Randal (Cipher or Shadows of Valentia)

    15: Shura (Fates)

    16: Muarim (Path of Radiance)

    17: Gilliam (Sacred Stones)

    18: Brom (Path of Radiance)

19: Deen (Shadows of Valentia) ✓

    20: Volug (Radiant Dawn)

...Is it surprising that 18 of my 20 picks here are men?  IS blew through a lot of women already.

Update: Characters added will have a checkmark added next to them.

What? But the description explicitly says the attack has to land.

It does indeed, but the description is incorrect. Test it yourself if you don't believe me.

The description is indeed incorrect.  I used Raging Storm, missed with it, and it gave me the Galeforce effect anyway.  That bug had to have come up after one of the updates, because I swear to God during my first Crimson Flower playthrough I didn't get the effect when I missed with it back then (which was before Male Byleth had his voice changed).

Sorry for the late follow up to this, @DarkHolyElf.  Took me some time to test it because Part 1 is a slog.

I'm a bit less high on Robin than many people, I think, because Robin isn't your best unit early (or even close; Fred wins key stats by like 7-8 points), and later on, while s/he's definitely the best, it's not by a massive margin; assuming their best build is Nosferatu spam (you can argue this, but it's how I broke Lunatic at least), then it's not like there's a massive difference between Robin, Morgan, Tharja, etc... or at least, I didn't find there to be one.

I've always felt that Robin could close the gap between him/her and Fredrick quickly because of the sizeable EXP boost from Veteran (and quite easily with a Defense boon).  I've done some male only playthroughs recently, and Fredrick's stats would start causing him to fall behind as early as chapter 12 (the start of the Valm arc) whereas Robin would continue to get stronger at a fairly quick rate.  While Fredrick starts strong, he falls off pretty hard.

Honourable mention to Edelgard who starts out being probably the best unit in the game due to her great base stats and finishes off being probably the best unit in the game due to how ridiculous Raging Storm is.

I disagree with this.  Sure, Raging Storm's effect is incredible, but most people forget that it's not an Art that people can just go ham with, plus you don't get the effect if Edelgard misses the attack.  Amyr has low durability, and the ore needed to repair it to continue using Raging Storm is the rarest kind, with the Titinus in CF Chapter 16 being the only realistic source of it without grinding side battles (via those Sand Worms).  Plus you only get 6 chapters with, so it's use is limited.

I can at least consider her a candidate for best unit in Three Houses (Dimitri and Byleth give her competition, and I lean slightly towards Dimitri due to finding him better at combat from personal experience), but candidate for best in the series?  I don't think she is.

While Bastian is bad, he absolutely does not "just die instead" to things that Rolf/Shinon aren't countering.

Comparing the HM enemy stats of Chapter 24 (Bastian's joining chapter) to Bastian's base stats...

Bastian has 35 HP and 12 def. Enemies in this map have Atk stats ranging from 20 to 32. The weakest enemies 5HKO Bastian, the strongest 2HKO him. The most common figure appears to be around 27-28, which kills him in three hits. Not a single enemy on the map doubles him. His own offence back is bad in general, but notably he's great at killing wyverns (both unpromoted and promoted), who are actually slow enough for him to double AND easily 2HKOed by his wind spells. Since one of the only things Rolf/Shinon have going for them is their ability to kill wyverns, being matched by Bastian at this is embarrassing, since of course he can counter things and they can't.

He's pretty bad of course, and certainly one of the worst, but I don't think he's the outright worst.

He also has the weapon ranks needed to use all of the siege tomes (besides Purge), so if you have them just sitting in your convoy he could use them, although Calill can do the same... while having higher base Speed and Magic... and joins 4 chapters earlier... and is 7 levels lower then him so she has more time to grow... wow, he really isn't good by comparison is he?  I still think Rolf is Path of Radiance's worst unit.  If you want to use bows just use (and later promote) Boyd, Astrid, or Geoffrey.  Astrid also has the potential to not grow well like Rolf, but unlike him, she has Paragon to make it known quick if you'll stick with her, has a horse for utility, and gains an additional weapon type upon promotion.
