  3. Ya know what, agreed. While semantically correct in function, "Dark Knight" evokes a non-anima user... I'm going to undo it, let's pretend this never happened :)
  4. FE:A's Dark Knight doesn't wield Dark magic and uses Swords and Tomes... same as a Mage Knight. Unless I'm sniffing glue and they can use dark tomes... time to fire up the 3ds. EDIT I might be sniffing glue but they can't use dark tomes. Also, the description is "A seasoned, mounted mage who wields tomes and swords."

"Lopto sect" is right I believe - Loptyr is the Dark Lord, Lopto describes the cult people and the nation. http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/Lopto_Sect Fin/Finn should be fixed. Also, I changed MageKnt to DarkKnt. The MageKnt uses tomes and swords, same as Dark Knight. Thanks for all of your input.   6. Whew... a lot. Next few days I'm going to formalize a list. Just updated the patch - redownload it. Some stuff I know I did - slayer weapons, Lopto/Loptyr, Finn, JrLord->Lord, LordKnt -> KntLord ... all kinds of stuff.
  7. Thanks for your interest! To be honest, I wasn't planning on translating the completely untranslated things because I know something like a 3 year old's equivalent Japanese. I can look at the freeze glitch eventually, probably won't get to that until I'm happy with the state of the translation improvements.
  8. I updated the patch again - http://diablo3gemcalculator.com/fe4/fe4.ips Tested it from the website as a soft patch using Snes9X 1.53 and it works fine. I'm going to start tracking the changes I've made and the ones that are outstanding a little more formally from here on out.
  9. I like it. Left over from the old patch, agreed there's some weird stuff like that in there. Didn't get to Finn yet, and good idea on HiPriest -> Bishop Correct. I see your point. Here's a question - how do I know what is NoA official and what isn't? If I throw the text "Tiltyu" into Google, the first hit is: fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/Tailto‎ ... so both could be acceptable I guess for newcomers... Now I know as well as anyone else that not everything on the interweb is fact, especially when it comes to freely-editable, non-scholarly sources of information like Wiki pages. Hell, I think Tailto is just as stupid as everyone else but my goal for the patch is accuracy and consistency. Where did Tailto come from if it's not official in some capacity? LMFAO at Helswatha. It's been fixed. Langobalt should go back to Langbart I guess... RE: people with patch issues... I don't have an immediate answer for you but I'll build a new one and upload soon.
  10. Nothing yet re: dragons/wyverns, still going through the easy stuff first and watching conversations on this topic and the sword/brand topic. I personally think it should follow FE:A and go Wyvern Rider, Wyvern Lord, etc. The Clipper ... I think it should stay as the Wing Clipper. There's no flyers-only bonus damage weapon in later games, right? I know about the Wyrmslayer, but that doesn't bonus vs. Pegasi. Also, I was thinking Seliph should start as a Lord, not a JrLord. In terms of their promoted class name, I'm thinking "Knight Lord" instead of Lord Knight to follow Eliwood's promoted class name.
  11. Are you patching the rom directly or just dropping the IPS in the same dir as the clean Japanese ROM? It loads and plays fine for me and I'm not permapatching the ROM. To be sure I downloaded the one directly from the website and it works as well.

  13. Not addressing all comments directly but have seen them all. Thanks for your continued testing and input. I've got the regex stuff under control, was just illustrating why some things take a fraction of a second to change for all occurrences and why others are a little more tricky. "Map names" - the image of the world map has names printed on it. Unfortunately, I don't immediately know how to change the text on a static image. That's going to require finding the image in the ROM file, uncompressing, editing, recompressing and patching it back in. I'm focusing on text in the script for now. Good find... Though lollish, I think Silessian is technically probably right. From the demonym wiki page, there's actually a places called Hesse listed: Hesse → Hessian So I'm going to roll with Silessian.

  15. Awesome discussion so far - thanks guys and gals. Too tired to quote all but I did read everything. Some thoughts: The changes I've made in that patch were simple find/replacements on the most glaring things. There are some that would give me trouble to do a blind replacement on -> Fin to Finn. You regex geeks understand why :) If you're not a regex geek, if I do a blind replacement of Fin -> Finn multiple times on the same file, you'll end up with Finnnnnnnn, haha. Isaac -> Isaach would do the same thing. EDIT Also it would kill words like "Finally". So stuff that will take more brainpower will end up being likely last on the change list. Fury -> Ferry. So lame but I gotta do it. "Ferry Squad?" Sigh. RE: Map names - good question, something I thought of when I decided to do this project but is unlikely to come to fruition. I actually spent time trying to get at the image data for the map (as well as the Holy Blood chart) and couldn't really figure it out. If anyone knows about background images buried in the rom, let's talk. Not mentioned here (I think?) there are a few places the "mark" of the royal bloodline is discussed, I'm going to change it to the brand somehow. Deadlords are on the list, thanks for mentioning it. Good catch on FFlame - changing to Valflame. Tor Hammer -> Mjolnir in conversations Also looking back @ my code the "Swanchik" as it's called as an item probably isn't changed properly, will fix. I'll look for the Ira usage. In my playthrough I missed the Brave Sword (noob, I know) so I didn't see that convo. Grannvaleians - lol, yeah we'll have to do something about that. Awesome catch. Thunder Sword is good since as someone pointed out, it casts the Thunder spell. I'm gonna do a little more work now.
  16. The patch I'm using as the base already does Rezire -> Nosferatu, and Nosferatu is Light in newer games IIRC (before FE13). Yeah a quick check of the wiki shows flip-flops every so often: Light -> Dark (FE6) -> Light (FE9) -> Dark (FE13) http://fireemblem.wikia.com/wiki/Nosferatu
  17. I hear you. The good thing is that if people like the previous patch better, they can keep using it and it won't offend me one bit. :D I'm doing this for myself primarily (yay OCD tendencies).
  18. I'm inclined to go Light Sword -> Light Brand and keep Earth Sword as is... The Soothing Sword from FE13 is close in function but not in appearance. I'm also inclined to go with Naga over Narga. That's part of the base patch I'm working from. Good points on changing names of ppl like Tinny/Teeny... I think the goal here is to move inline with the current official names as much as is possible, so I'd be inclined to stay with the change. Hypothetically, who's to say they don't include Teeny in future DLC or future FE games? Likely won't happen given the Japanese DLC for FE13 comes out well before it hits NA so we'd know ahead of time, but still... else in a few years some poor schmuck could have to pick up where I left off because Tinny's now mentioned in English as Teeny.
  19. You and me both, haha. But if we're going 'official,' it's gotta be in there. Thanks for the other suggestions. 'Clipper' is probably OK because there isn't really anything like that item in newer FE games - that just deals critical damage to flyers and not all 'beasts' - right? I've not finished FE9 and haven't played FE10 so I could be wrong.

But Gharnef, why? The current patch is awesome! There are many things now officially translated by NoA in the Fire Emblem mythology which weren't when the existing patch was created. There are also a few other things the community thinks could be improved upon judging by the conversations we've had so far so we can address those too. It's cool if you don't like my patch and don't want to use it - we can still be friends! Cool! So what changes have you already made, and what's planned? Can I try it out? Sure! Here's a link to the latest work. This is ALPHA, I haven't seen any issues in playtesting so far but if you do, please PLEASE let me know - provide screenshots, save states, etc. Just use a CLEAN Japanese ROM and Snes9x, save your current .ips file off somewhere safe and drop this file in the same directory as your ROM.   22. Just playing the game is good enough for me :) I'm very busy with work so I don't have time to play through the game start to finish right now. I'm actually working on this during swordfight time, haha. You'd apply the patch to a clean Japanese ROM. I forget if mine's headered or not (I believe it is). TBH I find the easiest thing to do is use Sne9X 1.53 in Windows because all you have to do is drop the .ips in the same dir as the ROM and it patches it at runtime and makes no modification to the ROM file itself. I'll fire up a new thread for this er, improved improved patch with a download link and the changes I've made.
  23. Alright, I fixed the text wrapping issue (was a bug in how I undid a funky macro in the FE4 parser). So, this is really happening. I'll update the patch with the most current names and stuff. Do we want to track requested changes here in this thread, or start its own? Many of you guys have great ideas so I'd like the hivemind at large here to come to a consensus on the changes so we don't end up with stuff like freakin' "Serlis" again. Anyone want to test out what I have so far? It's mostly names, items and places that I've changed to match the official mythology. I can upload the new patch somewhere if requested.

The issue now is two-fold: that sometimes text doesn't align to the top of a window (see my screenshot above - "But Larcei ..." is not at the top of the window) and that the whole width of text box isn't used appropriately (Seliph's haiku). I'm going to start updating scripts and worry about this later. The game's still playable like this, it's just that I'm a perfectionist ...
  25. I solved the text overrun issue but am seeing a little funniness in the scripts now. Anyone have success working with the FE4 parser? Shin & hanhnn I'm looking at you :P lol @ Seliph's almost haiku
