  1. Also FE1 and 2 still carry many Greek influences in their design, while FE3 and beyond go for a more medieval look. I think the definite FE look we are talking about starts really in FE3.
  2. My point is the shift had to be drastic. I think with the character designer and the overall look of the game, they wanted it be different because people who hadnt looked at the series will take a second look. I think the FE faithful will stay around as long as the gameplay is good. I think you just have the look at the Zelda series if you are worried about newcomers being scared away from the styles clash. As long as the game play is solid, they will go back to the older games. I wasnt referring to animations with the aesthetic. I was referring to shift in character design between FE12 and FE13. FE1 through FE12 has a clear style that runs through the characters. If you want to get particular, the style really starts with FE3 due to the power of the Super Famicom allowing for complex designs. But there is a distinct old school anime feel, even up until Radiant Dawn. FE13 goes with a more modern, radical anime design. That's the easiest way I can put it. To go back to the Final Fantasy comparsion: there is a clean break between FF6 and FF7's style. It's more pronounced because the setting is also different. The series moves from a medieval era to a more sci-fi focus. Beyond the transition to 3D, the series steps away from the fluid and concept art like character designs of Yoshitaku Amano to the more anime like and straightfoward designs of Tetsuya Nomura. The character designer concepts greatly influence the rest of those two games. The same is true for the shift to Yusuke Kozaki's design in Awakening. I was never referring to combat. Or animations.
  3. The post was replying to was talking about the character designs, which of course includes their in game portraits. So I was thinking of that because I said character designs. I think of a sprite or model as being a limited presentation of what the artist had in mind. Even with that in mind, I disagree that Sully's design doesnt suit the character. It perfectly reflects her tomboy nature. I agree about Kjelle, but I think she has the poorest design in the game. I would disagree with the GBA being that limited. I think part of good character design is working within the system you have. Besides, the GBA is much more advanced and stored more space than the SNES, which had no problem with cool looking mugshots. Unfortunately, what they did with the GBA series is that they reused a particular shape and style for the portraits. Which to me became very apparent with its reuse by the third iteration. For example, Eirika in game portrait does not match up with the fierceness and character design in her character design. It all comes down to the eyes, which was the same type of eyes that many females had in the in game portraits. I think discarding the aesthetics of Fire Emblem was necessary to create a clean break for the series. This allowed for a shift in perception of what the series was, changing the momentum of the series. We can disagree about the quality of the art, but the similar aesthetic made the series less memorable. Just look at how the Final Fantasy series has evolved in its aesthetics. Really, FE had the same aesthetic since the Super Famicom era.
  4. Due to its longevity, I think the Wars series needs a character the most. It's been around since the Famicom! Hopefully, a new character can spur on a new game.
  5. If you want to be technical about the term ancestor, Skyward Sword Link is the one with all the ancestors, as he appears first in the timeline (at the moment). Then it's Minish Cap Link. Four Swords Link. OoT Link. etc. I like the graphics better in 3DS version. They have a better handle on Lucina and Robin. I'll probably play it more as I play my 3DS the most out of any console by far.
  6. While the GBA character designs had a nice sense of functionality, the Awakening character designs did a great job of showcasing character personality. It depends on what you preferm but I like Awakening's character designs more.
  7. Probably. I mean it did only save the series from oblivion. Regardless, if that was the case then I'm glad because that means we got Lucina. It will probably an exploration of Assault levels. We will probably only get Brawl stages for this game.
  8. That's a great comparison. It's not a reclass. Sakurai sometimes uses other character's attacks from a series to represent the whole series better. For example, both Lucas and Ness don't use PK Starstorm in the Mother series, but its those characters' final smash in Brawl. So the latter.
  9. My favorite class design is the silent guardian, the watchful protector, the Dark Knight. My least favorite class design is the Knight, especially as worn by Kjelle. My favorite design with the character taken into consideration is Lucina. My least favorite design with the character taken into consideration is Kjelle.
  10. Sakurai's inclusion of elements from mediocre games in a series continues!I really wonder what Lucina's Final Smash will be. If it's critical hit, then I at least hope she does it differently than Marth.
  11. Lucina's probably took very little development time, so she didn't really beat anyone out. According to the Sakurai Famitsu interview, she's basically an alternate costume that got lucky and got an upgrade. "Initially, I had considered including Lucina as one of Marth's alternate costumes. After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A. In such cases, even if two characters' names and voices differ, as long as they function the same way, I assign them as alternate costumes. The Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin are examples of this setup. However, even though Lucina shares her physical stats and techniques with Marth, the characteristics of their attacks differ. When two such similar characters function in an even slightly different manner, I give them a separate spot on the roster since that will affect battle records and whatnot. In that sense, you could say she was very lucky to join the fray!" http://smashboards.com/threads/translated-sakurai-famitsu-interview.361454/
  12. It's a shame I havent been on this forum in awhile. My reaction was complete joy. I got both characters I wanted from FE, and my two most wanted characters to boot. Sure, Lucina's a clone, but that won't stop me from using her as my main. I think it's the best trailer by far and it elevate Robin and Lucina in its reveal.
  13. He mentions Triple Deluxe in his Miiverse post: Sakurai: Pic of the day. Celebrating the launch of Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan, King Dedede joins the battle! Check out his evocative facial expressions on the official web site.
  14. I used to dislike Miriel, Virion, and Yarne, but after talking with people about the character, I actually like them now. I still dislike Laurent and Kjelle however.
  15. I think the veteran/release date theory works, it just wont work always, if that makes sense. No way Sakurai is going to be that predictable. But occasionally, he will do it where it makes sense.
  16. I dont think its due to space limitations. This gives handheld games a greater chance to shine. I think the Wars series has had a total of 1 trophy in Brawl and Melee. 12 games. 1 trophy. Considering how integral handhelds have been to Nintendo's success, I think it's long overdue. I can see us getting trophies for each of the GBA lords for example. I dont really remind if they are reused models. If it's a trophy to commemorate their role in history, it makes sense that they appear in their most historically relevant form.
  17. and we're back. new info I think. Sakurai on Miiverse: Happy New Year! Pic of the day. There will be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U games, and each version will boast different types and models. The 3DS trophies will be mainly from handhelds and the Wii U version will feature trophies from the home-console games. Which means there will be probably over a 1000 trophies overall if each game has around the number Brawl did.
  18. I've mainly played 3DS games this year, but I would have to go with Fire Emblem: Awakening. For a second, I thought it was going Zelda: ALBW, but I just really like replaying Fire Emblem Awakening.
  19. Lon'qu and Cherche. It gives you the best backstory for Lon'qu.
  20. its feels like an amalgamation Link to me. I would be in favor of replacing the boomerang, as I don't really like the Gale Boomerang. But I think link will keep the boomerang. If he did get a quick skyward strike, that might help him in tiers or what not.
  21. last update for a week: Sakurai: The pic of the day that runs Monday through Friday will be on break starting Dec. 27. I'll be back on Jan. 6, so I hope everyone has a happy new year!!
  22. Lucina is my favorite. She is an effective unit, has one of the best designs in the series, and faces a great adversity in her game. I don't really mind that she takes a back seat to Chrom and Robin, since one of the themes of the game is the generation taking the previous one. Although she is very a clearly the tritagonist in the game, she exceeds her father in usefulness and usually ends up as one of main units. My second would be Ike. My third would be Ephraim.
