  1. I think you're right. It's basically the saying "less is more". I liked things more when characters were a bit of an enigma and they had the "hidden depth" of supports and such. It's just a matter of presentation, really. Awakening is easier to enjoy because it puts everything out there/at the surface, meaning people can appreciate most characters a lot easier than they would before. I can mention qualities about most Awakening characters for instance (not including the children because I avoid those), but I can't really do that for most say, GBAFE characters (the GBA games being some of my favorite for various reasons), because they don't have a ton of lines to start with, unless they're main characters or supporting characters that can get main-game dialog like Sain, Kent, Marcus, and Matthew. (Random/not really related, but I did like how older games had dialog change based on who died due to permadeath. Just thought it was a neat thing/nice show of effort.)
  2. Not trying to brag or anything (it's nothing to even brag about IMO...) but I'm an experienced playtester (cough several years of hacking experience) and writer for all sorts of things, so I could say, play-test, scout for errors, and give general feedback on the writing or anything else (animations, map design, story, almost anything within reason). Just let me know. I'm also cool with HP bars only showing for units not at full HP. not a big deal either way though, I don't think. (I'd have to play to know for sure though)
  3. Woah, crazy. Looking forward to this even more, haha. Probably my most anticipated FE hack if only because I'm a RWBY fan (though MS and some others look solid). XP Curious how you feel about that finale/what you might be doing with regards to it (if anything), but you seem like you're pretty dedicated/serious about this so I'll probably be content with whatever you manage to do. Keep it up! :)
  4. aaaaye, with you here. maybe it'll be download-only after all. glad I already imported it and got all my goodies, in that case. the art is beautiful IMO, so I'd be salty about digital-only. EDIT: Jave or whoever also made a good point though. If ATLUS is involved, it might be forced to get one anyway, lol. Nintendo wouldn't want to hurt their relationship, ATLUS likes LEs, bla bla bla
  5. Basically most of the negative opinions regarding the new games and their waifus and stuff (though I don't go attacking people about it). I don't mind the changes to the gameplay formula, I'm mostly just disappointed in the setting/premise/fan service/terrible story and writing. I also think Fates should have been a spin-off and not been called FE (or at least, been marketed as a spin-off). I also think FE7 has a good story. I think Chrom isn't that great a main character. I think FE4 is intolerable. I think the worst part about Fire Emblem now is the fanbase, not the games. Basically two extremes constantly clashing with each other and being toxic and a bunch of lurkers/people who keep to themselves who look on from the sidelines (me). I think the fanbase deal might be fixable but probably not because people on the internet are stubborn, bad at interacting with people, and sensitive. See: I'll have probably offended someone with this, with some backlash response, maybe saying that I am a part or even the center of the problem, lol. That kind of "I need to go to war with everyone" attitude is in a lot of people, the controversies over the recent games are just catalysts for that, IMO. I think using the cop-out "it's optional" to avoid responding to/accepting critique is the worst thing anyone can do and makes themselves look like a complete moron. Mostly in regards to new-FE when people tell others "it's optional" so things like the waifuservice etc. have no effect on one's experience or the game and therefore are not valid things to criticize/complain about. It's such a bad argument I basically lose all my faith in humanity when people say that. Naturally, these are all unpopular opinions for a reason. I don't expect anyone to agree with them or be happy to hear them, and I'm not interested in hearing you argue/fight over them, but if you have no self-control and decide to anyway, just know that I probably won't respond. I'm pretty much just dumping them here because it felt appropriate given the topic title. I'm well-aware of the counterarguments for each and I expect that anyone who feels the need to argue them is already too decided to be convinced otherwise anyway, lol.
  6. there's like Requiem and then some really old FE hacks though like TLP, that's it really =P. We need a cool completed full custom hack, heh
  7. I'm pretty solid at most games except shooters in general, but I guess I tend to pick up Smash games and Fire Emblem games pretty quickly. I don't have any game I'm pro level at, unfortunately, I'm no speed-runner or top-tier gamer. More like B or A-tier, if S-tier is high-level-speedrunning or pro tier.
  8. oh wow someone else besides me has played Trails of Cold Steel, that was a surprise also, not going to recommend games because not only are there a lot already, but I'm not a fan of recommending games without specific details on what you want/like. there are thousands of "good" games out there, I need some criteria lol
  9. very cool~ also I didn't mean to rush youuu, just excited and scared you won't finish it like all the other hacks T_T (Al plz XP)
  10. :( STILL WAITING v1.5 might be soon but I need dat version FINAL if you know what I mean I might give in and play v1.5 if I get desperate, but I really am looking forward to the completed product, since it seems like it'll be pretty fun. don't lose motivation, you can do it~
  11. Looking good. Assuming I can remember when I next come here who knows when, I'm looking forward to seeing more updates—it'd be great if it finished, haha. (I want to play it but I don't like playing unfinished stuff... >>' I need to finish it, not get left depressed because I got to a false-end =P)
  12. not everyone thinks Fates' gameplay is still great I misinterpreted this at first, but I think you mean objective as in "goal", right? if so, I suppose it would be hard to argue that there isn't more objective variety, and it's not really a topic I've heard being discussed (for better or worse) at all, so you got me there. it doesn't seem to be too controversial. however, what I said stands: that I, as in I alone, could not think of anything ..., and I certainly wasn't trying to use hyperbole, though the bit about Saizou's animation was a bit of a joke; mentioning something that's so insignificant it's not even worth being discussed is hardly worth mentioning in the context of what I was talking about, IMO. At least chapter goals were a major complaint with FE13 so I do think that matters, which is why I ceded that at least Fates seems to have done something right there (even though due to the gimmicks and the prevalence of defeat-the-boss chapters it still hasn't sated my high expectations, kind of like how some other FE games had too many seize-the-throne chapters...) a quasi-soldier class? not even sure what you're trying to say here um, I like gender-restricted classes, and there are probably others too. reclassing in general is still controversial personally, there's pretty much only one song I can say for sure is great, I could come up with complaints for practically every other song. soundtrack mostly failed to impress for me and it's very hit or miss depending on if you like the style/approach to music what with how it handles map themes, battle themes, etc.: haven't heard too much of other opinions but I can't imagine a boring soundtrack like that would be near unanimously agreed upon to be enjoyable. then again, maybe it is. no evidence either way AFAIK, but in my mind it's up for debate, and I was only speaking for myself. don't get too riled up by little old me. =) probably not, the game has always had roots in anime-like character design and such. just look at the hair colors. I think the biggest deal would probably have to be how characters not only look like generic anime characters but now act like them with all their tropes, and you even have boob scenes and blushing scenes and crap that make me want to cringe. I like anime a lot, mind you, but FE is one of the last places I'd want to see that crap. >_>' Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can manage to genuinely like it for its good parts, or something. Similar deal here. I'd be cool if Awakening/Fates branched off into their own and we still on occasion got a more classic FE game in the spirit of the early 2000's instead of the last like, 4 or 5 games (or 2, depending on how you feel), but eh. maybe, but I doubt you'd believe me anyway. not sure what hyperbole I used to garner that kind of response in the first place: was it my joke about Saizou? or my joke about how a waifu comment would get 1000 likes? in the first place, what was I even arguing? Really, I skimmed my post and didn't see much. I felt like I was just sharing my opinions on the situation. I've pretty much accepted since Awakening that few people share my opinions and quite frankly, no amount of debate on the internet is going to change a bunch of stranger's minds, so I'm more or less content with just sharing my thoughts to feel a little bit of relief from thinking about it. XP like? examples or nothing, please. I stated that the series has had one of the worst backlashes from the fandom, comparing it to Tales of, which has had a similar backlash with the most recent game, Zestiria, but with a lot of people still liking Zestiria quite a bit. I wasn't commenting on whether the hate or love was correct. I did share my personal opinions on the subject, but only in the last paragraph. And I wasn't trying to say that my opinions are right or anything, I added a very clear note saying "personal opinions incoming" so that you'd know if I said something negative about something you liked, it's nothing to get in a fit about. really, if you're going to respond, at least respond with something substantial. I don't see where I said anything akin to "I dislike it so it's bad", more like I said "I dislike it because I think it's bad". considering I gave an example of a change I liked, that seems like a shallow assessment. I'm also okay with the new approach to music, animations, and sprites, though yes, I'd like to see a return to the older approach too. sorry for having complicated views on things that are difficult to understand. and Persona starting as a spinoff has nothing to do with anything, and you have no evidence backing up the statement "this game is the natural evolution of FE", so why don't you add a "I think this game is ______ because" if you don't want to seem... well, I won't say as to not be rude. and honestly, while I could be wrong, it seems you took stuff outside the last paragraph in my post to be personal opinions, when I was just explaining the situation and how people think. I suppose it's my opinion that the older, classic FE fans are a minority because I have no evidence, but you're getting into stupid-level nit-pickiness there, and more importantly, that's not an opinion on the actual game, just like how my analogies were just that, analogies. metaphors. whatever. reading through the rest of your post... more opinions but with no indication that you yourself understand they're just that, making you seem self-centered... and... a statement trying to tell me what to do... LOL. yeah, good luck with that. you can't handle criticism of your favorite game or whatever? maybe you can get off the internet. or deal with it. or be a jerk about it. but that last one is going to get you called out and get you labeled as a fan boy/girl, which probably isn't what you want because then people won't take your opinions seriously. also, I liked FE13 and I liked the map gameplay of FE14 (just not most everything else) so fight me, lol. I'll be playing the English version of the game via the Special Edition too. you can't get me with that petty tactic where you try to lump me in with elitists who "should stick to older games"—IMO, the second worst cop out for avoiding critique with the newer games, the first being "it's optional", one of the worst/stupidest-sounding "arguments" to ever be made about a feature in a game, as far as I can remember. and I'm still a bigger FE fan than you and ain't no shitty fan service and other weeb shit going to stop me, nope. <- a joke, take it seriously even a little and you're hurting yourself lolol, it's ok. I don't mind a little cheap shot. it's the internet. yeah, that was one of the worst... I can't say counterargument because I don't remember trying to argue anything, but... worst responses to a post, I guess. for different reasons than usual, I'm used to being flamed and such, but that was something differently entirely. internet never ceases to amuse, lol. <3 Xenoblade, Monolith Soft one of like three companies I can trust to make a great game more than "once in a while". ;) (thankfully between that and the "once in a whiles" I have plenty of games to play =P)
  13. I know right? even my forum has a like button. though on second thought, if that means posts like "X is best waifu" are going to get a thousand likes, I'd rather spare myself the mental agony that is my loss of what little faith I have left in humanity =P (being overdramatic buuuut, Poe's Law if nothing else haha) as fans/former fans of many serious with similar situations, I can say FE is definitely one of the worst. even Tales of isn't this bad with its recent changes and how many people (despite still buying the games as loyal fans) aren't pleased with the latest games. and it's kind of true, Fates is really more like a spin-off than an actual FE game. it'd have been fine if they classified it as such, but Nintendo pretty much false advertised the game in the trailers and gave us something that's about as much Fire Emblem as Persona is SMT (note: Persona was a sub-series and is now pretty much its own thing separate from SMT, so ATLUS seems to embracing the clear differences in the games, IMO, unlike Nintendo) as for those people who are always chiming in with their thoughts. they feel abandoned and betrayed and lonely. imagine your favorite pizza got different ingredients but had the same brand name and now tasted horrible. or your best friend turned into a zombie in the zombie apocalypse. in some cases, it's so extreme people would rather put the series out of its misery. kind of like, "the least i can do for my best friend is kill him", even if as a zombie, he is a friend of all the other zombies. #WeirdAnalogies but in all seriousness, you probably have a popular opinion, not an unpopular one. if you ask me, it's people who prefer the old games and don't like the hundreds of things Fates does lamely (in people's opinions) that are in the minority. since they were in the majority--and were the loyal fans for so long who helped keep the series up to this point--yeah, they're going to be salty. can't be helped. FWIW (note: personal opinions coming): I haven't thought there was a great FE game since FE9, though FE10/12 were both pretty good, and FE13 was fun at first until I got past the "feel good"/"look how shiny this is" atmosphere that the game has. so me being discontent with the series direction isn't anything too new (someone implied fans were having double standards or something, not the case with me), I haven't been super pleased with an FE game since FE9 after all and that's an oooold game. it just kind of plummeted with Fates, minus some of the STRATEGY gameplay mechanics being awesome (pretty much everything in My Castle is trash, IMO, but I'm cool with removal of weapon uses and dual attack/guard even if they're super different from normal FE).
  14. "Controversial Aspects in Fates" literally can't think of a single thing about the game that isn't controversial or that isn't justifiably dislikeable except maybe Saizou's critical animation EDIT: oh wow. someone actually knows what they're talking about. I'm not sure I fully agree—I think in some cases they did try to make things legit but just failed, whereas in other cases they just didn't try at all, but still. well-written/researched post IMO, props
  15. Yeah the first person seems to be playing pretty fast. Hard difficulty? wow. SMT/SMT-like games on hard are usually kind of a pain if you aren't both good at them and patient, AFAIK lol The last person seems uh, interestingn if nothing else... definitely looks like they know fluent English, can't find any GIR#FE videos though.
  16. yeah that makes sense. and sure please do if they are being played by someone who can speak English (since just finding gameplay videos in general isn't that hard/someone else linked to some Japanese-people streams earlier AFAIK)
  17. Just a heads-up there is a stream at http://www.twitch.tv/burninggravity playing the game (now that it is officially out) with English commentary and some basic translation (mostly translating dialog/getting the gist of things). If you want to ask questions or anything you can do so as the streamer speaks English. They aren't very far now but they said they should be streaming later today and throughout the week. I heard Hamayama's stream went down (though maybe it's back up, idk) and this one has English so just thought I'd share it if anyone's interested.
  18. who's "BLAZER" also you're pretty bad for a mod, if I were a mod I'd warn you for spamming with a 2-word post. but since I'm not, I'll just report you
  19. lol "big time" plz, it was just Ghast who LP'd it. Ghast is just a lonely drunk. and he can't even be mad about that jab because he knows it's true *shot* (jk Ghast you're only sometimes lonely and sometimes drunk) but in all seriousness, even though I think FE hacking is dumb now, this is amazing. Like, you actually have my support for this. it's an FE8 hack so I can't... literally support you by doing hacking or anything, but you've got me for anything else I can reasonably do. I'm secretly a huuuuge RWBY nerd and this crossover is just... so cool to me, I can't even words. The plus is that you actually seem to be a pretty competent hacker (and spriter?) which is just what this needs to be enjoyable. The sprites are pretty much fine as they are, at least for now, and I have confidence in the other aspects of the game. FWIW, I can definitely advertise for you with videos (or otherwise, once you have more progress—I own both a YT account and Twitter with a fair amount of subscribers/followers) and if you ever feel like it, I have a lot of experience betatesting/giving feedback (I'm a former hacker and now an actual game dev), so I'd be happy to help out. Also, unlike Ghast, I actually understand what's going on with the characters. I actually feel kinda bad I can't help with hacking/spriting/music (regardless of whether you need it), which I can't believe I'm saying because I quit doing those things a while ago thinking I'd never want to seriously do them again, lol. But dang if I won't type up a wall of text like this to try to cheer you on. And again, if I can do anything for you, let me know (preferably by PM but I'll try to go out of my way to visit this forum and check out the thread). not gonna lie, I don't want to come off as a petty begger fanboy but I really want to beta if you're allowing that. But if you don't need/want what little I can do, then at the very least I shall be stalking this and waiting for your success. (while watching volume 3 =P) Best, "Red" EDIT: ok, something came over me and I got a little too excited. I'm calm now. that being said, this hack is still exciting and I will still be its fan. (and advertise if you want. tbh, I want to/would beta-test, but am too busy, so really can't afford to)
  20. wait, this hack is still alive? seems like you're making progress shoot, more games to play... this sucks... ... uh, I mean, good job, keep up the hard work, etc.
  21. Seems decent, but the UI comes off as a bit... confusing. Idk. Maybe just not my style. Regardless, I'll at least keep an eye out for it. Thanks for sharing it!
  22. I don't anticipate a new wave and I wouldn't want one anyway, since I think the game is trashis fine as-is and wouldn't benefit from more DLC. I'd rather they focus on making an FE game that's actually fun to me, since I'm self-centered and only care about my own tastes XP
  23. mhm, you have a very good point. I'm not going to disagree with you. distractions aren't really a solution. for what it's worth, I think distractions that you feel obligated to do are better than ones you just do for fun, because you're more likely to be distracted by things like the stress, tight schedule, etc.--when your worries are finding time to eat, meeting deadlines, etc., it's different than distracting yourself by (for example--not saying you necessarily do this) watching Twitch streams and YouTube videos and lurking reddit all day--these you can stop almost any time with little to no repercussions (i.e. they aren't really "obligations") and ultimately the people on the internet might be causing grief in the first place, haha
  24. so, the same place as me? or at least, a replica located somewhere else? that first one's such a Cleveland joke, I can't even
