  1. Something I've been thinking about a lot these past couple of years. Is there a way to truly define an objectively good story? Now obviously when it comes to narrative critique and analysis there is a huge subjective component as what one values in a story varies from person to person. Though with some stories we can indeed see some kind of general consensus that a story is "bad" or "good". Why is that I wonder? Is there really a way to truly objectively judge the quality of a piece of fiction? Like what makes a plot good? what makes a character good? is there really a way to tell? I'm just really curious. Personally I like to focus on the themes and ideas behind the story to gauge it's quality because those are the things of which everything else a story is built on when you think about it. I mean what makes a character relatable are the things about them that allow us to understand them. Likewise stories I find to be very similar in that a story is only able to invoke emotions within us is because it conveys values that we can understand. This is a topic I've been chewing on for some time now and I've yet to truly find a definitive answer. So what do you all think?
  2. So we all know the many many shortcomings of fates’ story but I’m curious is there anything you all think fates did right in terms of its story writing? I’m a person who says critique should always be fair and balanced so why don’t we give credit where credit is due. for me personally I love how Camilla was handled in birthright. Yeah I know “yandere = bad” but I think it works here. Camilla grew up during a time where she had to fight her siblings in a a near never ending cold war for the king’s favor so for her to go mentally insane in response to corrin choosing the other side makes a lot of sense to me and I feel it was handled well.
  3. So I watch and read a lot of analysis videos and articles in regards to anime, manga, movies, books, etc. and in them I constantly hear the term nuance thrown around everywhere throughout these videos/articles. Though what what exactly does that mean? like what makes for "nuanced" storytelling? I think I have a vague idea on what it means but I'm not entirely sure. Like I think it means subtle details within the story that meld together to create a greater whole. For example, I've been rewatching naruto recently and something I've noticed going back through it is that naruto and sasuke both have a desire to be recognized by people which adds nuance to their relationship. at least that's what I think it means.
  4. So after watching these two videos, I'm not entirely sure how to feel. On one hand they do make a valid point but on the other I can't help but can't shake this feeling that there's something wrong with the argument presented. I don't know my thoughts are all over the place and I wanted to see what other people think to more coherently organize mine.
  5. Hi, after creating a DeviantArt account (https://garretgreybird.deviantart.com/) and posting this on the German Fire Emblem Forum I decided to go ahead and post these here to. I am quite new to Spriting but decided to go ahead and try to make some own Sprites. I started with enhancing the resolution of Ephraim's normal attack: Afterwards, I went ahead and made my first own Animation in this higher resolution with a character where I only had to move the arms and not the body: But I recently only got time in the evenings so I decided to go with the "easier" normal FE style. The first one was inspired by John Constantine and used Lylods sprite as a basis for him. the two first pics are my ideas for his idle pose, while the third one is the first sketch for his first keyframe. This is my try to create Ryougi Shiki (Saber version) from The Fate/Grand Order in an FE style. Her Basis was some bishop sprite (Think it was Arthur). The first two pictures are her idle with and without a weapon, while the last one is my first try on the first keyframe (still not happy with it, needs a different angle). These two are Ryougi Shiki (Assasin version), which is just a rather minor edit to some female Rouge. the second sprite is my first try on Artoria (from Fate as well), with a mix of druid and mercenary as a basis. Now, this last one is the one I am currently trying to animate. It is Mordred (again, from Fate) and I got one version with and without helmet, as well as the first keyframe, which I am currently trying to connect with the idle pose. I would really appreciate some feedback to any of these sprites.
  6. Hello! I’m Blade and I am a pretty new person when it comes to spriting nowadays but I improved a lot this past year! Here, I’ll post up portraits because who doesn’t like them? They are pretty to look at (not always). I also have an art thread on the FEU Forums. I seek for critique and feedback so I can be the best spriter I can! EDIT: June 25th, 2019 "Party Colors"
  7. Going to be making this a more dedicated thread where I can post progress and such. Still very much open to critique. [spoiler=Old Topic]I'm rather new to this whole spriting thing, so forgive me if I've made any rookie mistakes. These are a handful of the character mugs I've been working on. To be clear, I'm looking for ways to make the mugs look cleaner, things like coloring and shading, etc. Please let me know if there's a format more convenient to critique I can upload in. EDIT: Two more I think could use some work Just a couple of things to note, I realize the outline color of the Cavalier isn't consistent with the others. I will adjust it when I go back to make changes. I also don't care about the 15 color limit, as I intend to use these portraits in FEXNA when it's finished. [spoiler=10/17/16 Update]
  8. Hi o/ I'm new to this site, registered because I just only recently discovered it, and because I recently started working on a fangame in FEXP. So this topic is where I'll toss my finished gifs/spritesheets/customs for archival/critique; hopefully I'll see myself improve as I continue doing this. Note: The intended fangame will be a crossover fangame from a number of different series, so most of the sprites posted here will be of existing characters. I do not own any of these characters, all rights go to their original creators, etc. All sprites are done in GraphicsGale. Note that as these sprites are meant to be used with FEXP, unless specified, they will not adhere to 16 colour limits, and therefore will likely look terrible when placed in a GBA. Any and all feedback would be appreciated, thanks ^^ #1: Weiss Schnee (RWBY) [25-52ish unique colours] [COMPLETED & PUBLIC] #2: Ryougi Shiki (Kara No Kyoukai) [15 COLOURS] [idle Sprite only, due for anim]
  9. This is the first chapter I've made, so I want to get a few opinions on how I can improve future chapter construction. Anything from storyline, to grammar, to enemy positions. Here is the download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/v6xd0t4tel6ynrx/morvahackprologue.ups?dl=1 Though I will warn you, I don't think it has many new, cool things like other hacks do (although I suppose since its a prequel to FE7 it doesn't really have to be all that original). I just want some advice on how I can make future chapters so that my hack doesn't look like it came out of the toilet. I personally think my chapter is decent, but I don't think that the creator is an appropriate judge of his/her work. Also, I apologize if this is the wrong section for this. Didn't think it would fit well in any other section.
  10. Okay, so I've been wanting to ask someone about the pairings I chose and how good they are (Both support/story/personality wise and optimization wise). I've played the game for a while now and wondered how good my pairings are. So I wanted to get a chance to ask other FE:A players about them. How good are my pairings good optimization wise and support wise? (I tried balancing them both out, not doing the worst optimization pairings or doing crack pairings) Alright so here are my pairings and the skills they passed down to their children: Chrom x Fem!MyUnit; This one just kind of...happened. At the end of Chapter 11, apparently my Avatar had the highest supports with Chrom, so they got married. I didn't reset it cause it's my first time playing, so now I want to say I don't regret it. Children: Lucina- Chrom passes down Aether and Fem!MyUnit passes down Ignis. Male!Morgan- Chrom passes down Rightful King and Fem!MyUnit passes down Galeforce Fredrick x Sumia; This one was sort of based on personal opinion. Since Fem!MyUnit was with Chrom, Sumia had a romantic option cut out, leaving Fredrick, Gaius, and Henry. For some reason I didn't like Gaius and Henry's hair colors on her so I went with Fredrick (And I had plans to pair Henry with someone else). Plus, imo, the supports were super adorable. Also, I couldn't find anyone better to pair Fredrick with at the time. I heard it's the worst pairing for Sumia stat wise; is that true? Children: Cynthia- Fredrick passed down Aegis and Sumia passed down Galeforce Virion x Sully; This one was truly based on my opinion. As soon as I saw them in Chapter 1 with their hilarious dialogue, I wanted to pair them up. I don't know if this is a good pairing or not stat wise for Kjelle. It's one of my favorite couples in Fire Emblem: Awakening, but is the optimization for Kjelle really bad? Children: Kjelle- Virion passed down Bowbreaker and Sully passed down Aegis Stahl x Cordelia; For some reason, when I saw the two together do so well in battle, I wanted to pair them up. That wasn't a bad choice; I later found out Stahl is one of Severa's best fathers. I might keep this pairing, unless you guys think there are better couples for Stahl and Coredlia respectively. Children: Severa- Stahl passed down Aegis and Cordelia passed down Galeforce Vaike x Lissa; I had a hard time with this one. I found it super hard to find a good husband for Lissa. Her options were limited at the time, so I did some research. I found out Vaike was a pretty solid father for Owain, so I went with it. The supports helped with my decision as well. Are there better husbands for Lissa though? Children: Owain- Vaike passed down Counter and Lissa passed down Galeforce Donnel x Nowi; Found out this was one of the best pairings for Nowi since Donnel passes down Aptitude to make a super strong Nah. Plus, the two look cute together, and I found Nah's hair to match her red cloak quite nicely. Children: Nah- Donnel passed down Aptitude and Nowi passed down Swordbreaker (Nah also learned Lancebreaker once I made her a Griffon Rider) Lon'qu x Olivia; ...I seriously had no purpose with optimization for this pairing. I went with it because I thought it was super adorable. Both are quiet and quite awkward around other people (women for Lon'qu), so I thought it'd be cute if they both got married. Plus Inigo looked good with Lon'qu's hair color, and the supports were pretty good. This pairing isn't bad stat wise, is it? Children: Inigo- Lon'qu passed down Vantage (because I did NOT want to go through the whole Myrimdon line) and Olivia passed down Galeforce Ricken x Miriel; One of my last pairings. Since both are magic users, I figured they would make Laurent an even powerful mage. The supports helped a bit too, although I did this one mainly because of the high magic stat. Children: Laurent- Ricken passed down Lifetaker and Miriel passed down Dual Support+ Gaius x Panne; ...This is seriously the last pairing I created. It was either Gaius or Kellam. I went with Gaius because I didn't want him to be forever alone'd he has good speed and skill stats, which Taguels excel in. Supports were freaking hilarious. Is Gaius better with someone else? I heard he's one of the best fathers. (Although I really don't care about the Galeforce thing with Gaius...as you can see, most of my characters already have Galeforce) Children: Yarne- Gaius passed down Astra and Panne passed down Lethality. Gregor x Cherche; This pairing I just went with the flow. Gregor's hair color looked good on Gerome, and both parents have really good stats. Plus I heard Gregor was a great father for Gerome, which was even a bigger reason why I went with it! Children: Gerome- Gregor passed down Armsthrift and Cherche passed down Deliverer (so I can avoid the whole Griffon Rider line) Libra x Maribelle; Both have high magic stats as well as being healers. That's why I ended up making Brady into a Sage. Supports also showed Maribelle's kind side that some people don't seem to notice. Children: Brady- Libra passed down Lifetaker and Maribelle passed down Galeforce Henry x Tharja; Both are magic users (although I found out later on that Noire is an archer). I found it kind of hilarious to pair both dark mages up; it makes sense to why Noire is bipolar. I felt like this pairing wasn't as good optimization wise as I thought, but it wasn't really bad. Children: Noire- Henry passed down Lifetaker and Tharja passed down Vengence. Kellam got forever alone'd cause I'm mean. /Brick'd Children pairings don't matter to me right now, I really want to focus on first gen pairings. If you comment, thanks for helping! I really appreciate it. (Also sorry for the long explanation; I get carried away sometimes )
