  1. How do i know in Fates for what Units when do i promote/change and to what? do i just scour the wiki checking the skill list? how do you go about it.
  2. after exploring the many aspects of the game one last time, i've decided to show once again wich builds can be used for each unit, along with different skills setups. this time, it's the children's turn. what follows will be the screens of some of the best units i've managed to obtain in 2nd generation with pairings, in order to give a general idea of how each unit will be after promotion, with details and tips included. [ warning: MASSIVE topic ahead. story spoilers-free for the most - however if you wish to learn about promoted classes later on, you may want to check this topic after you're actually done with the game ] secondary sources of infos regarding classes: https://serenesforest.net/genealogy-of-the-holy-war/classes/introduction/ https://serenesforest.net/genealogy-of-the-holy-war/classes/weapon-ranks/ https://serenesforest.net/genealogy-of-the-holy-war/miscellaneous/skills/ well then, let us proceed to actual data: Skill set: [Sigurd x Deirdre] Unit overview: one of the most powerful anti-mage units in the game, Seliph will also gain Prayer( ) when using his Crusader weapon, giving him a higher evasion rate when on low HP. by using often the silver sword with his father Sigurd, it will unlock the critical chance quite fast by the end of 1st generation after reaching 50 kills, giving his son another advantage by the start of chapter 6. magic swords are also a good alternative, especially against armored units and/or to counter ranged units. the Bargain ring can also help with the repair costs of the Tyrfing. - Main roles: Damage dealer | Anti-mage unit | Dodge-tank (becomes mobile after promotion) Pros: a well balanced unit, especially good against mages. works well as dodge tank. Cons: he will require proper gear and a lot of attention when leveling up on the field/arenas, otherwise he'll end up being just an average unit by the end of the game. in case of items inheritance, the Elite ring can help him a lot, along with the Leg ring before promotion. Skill set: [Arvis x Deirdre] Unit overview: one of the strongest mage units in the game, Yuria will also gain Prayer( ) and Life( ) after obtaining her mother's Circlet, giving her a higher evasion rate when on low HP and a permanent HP regen effect. depending on wich castles have been conquered in chapter 6, she can either obtain Aura( Deirdre's tome ) or Resire, a more useful tome due to HP leech effect that can also ignore the Big Shield skill of armored units( ). the tome of Naga will boost her stats to crazy levels, making her not only a powerful unit with a secondary anti-mage role, but also an hybrid tank in some situations. using her tome against the final boss in the last chapter will also make things a lot easier. she can eventually heal allies in case of need, wich in turn will give her more chances to level up, or debuff enemies with other staffs as well. - Main roles: Healer | Debuffer | Damage dealer (can be a dodge-tank/anti-mage unit with the Naga tome) Pros: a decent early-game healer, that will become a good mage depending on gear and experience gained. works very well as dodge tank. Cons: sadly, she's the classic late-bloomer kind of unit due to story development. the Naga's tome will be available only in the latest chapter of the game, along with her Circlet. she'll work better as a secondary healer for the majority of 2nd generation, at least until she manage to reach promotion levels. she'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. Skill set: [Ira x Holyn] Unit overview: a build based on Odo's major holy blood, mainly due to the parents background stories. not the most efficient build, but it can work fine as it is due to dedicated sword user stats. - Main roles: Damage dealer Pros: a good damage dealer from early chapters, that will become amazing after unlocking 50 kills on the silver blade. works fine as hybrid tank. Cons: weak to magic, he'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. works better in close combat, suffers against ranged units. Skill set: [Ira x Holyn] Unit overview: same as his brother. - Main roles: Damage dealer Pros: an amazing damage dealer from early chapters, that will become impressive after unlocking 50 kills on the Hero blade. she will kill anything that gets close to her in one single round of combat. works fine as dodge tank. Cons: weak to magic, she'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. works better in close combat, however her higher dodge rate will give her better survival chances against melee and ranged units compared to her brother. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: a good early to late-game tank, that can potentially become the bane of armored units with the proper settings. - Main roles: Damage dealer | Tank Pros: with the proper gear, he'll be able to deal 4 hits plus random criticals once he manage to obtain the Pursuit ring( ) and the Hero axe with 50 kills on it. work well against flying units too as backup archer. Cons: weak to magic, he'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. this build also requires the knowledge about specific secret items, in order to make it functional. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: the swordmaster by excellence, he'll pretty much kill anything that gets in his way. - Main roles: Damage dealer | Dodge-tank Pros: an amazing damage dealer from early chapters, that will become impressive after taking a Hero blade. using his Crusader weapon together with the Prayer ring( ) will make him untouchable at low HP. probably one of the best dodge tanks in the game. Cons: weak to magic, he'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. works better in close combat, but with the proper equipment, ranged units won't be a big problem. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: a good early-game tank and balanced mobile unit, Oifaye can deal tons of damage thanks to Pursuit and Critical. he works fine as anti-mage unit, and can switch to magic swords against armored units as well( or just use his armor breaker sword eventually, in case it doesn't get sold to someone else ). he's basicly the Jeigan type of unit in FE4, but stays quite strong up until late-game chapters. - Main roles: Mobile tank | Mobile damage dealer | Mobile anti-mage unit Pros: he'll carry you for the first chapters on 2nd generation, so it would be wise to give him proper gear. a Skill and/or Shield ring will always help him, at least for early-game. he's one of the main candidates for defending castles from enemy surprise attacks. Cons: as much as Jeigan, he becomes less reliable as the game goes on compared to other units. he'll end up kiting enemies with a magic sword for the most in late chapters, and eventually take care of mages when necessary. weak to Knight Killer lances. Skill set: [Lachesis x Noish] Unit overview: an hybrid tank that can support allies with Charisma, he can also deal random damage spikes thanks to Critical. - Main roles: Mobile tank | Mobile supporter Pros: a decent damage dealer, mostly suited for tanking and supporting on the front lines. the Shield ring together with the Defender sword makes Delmud one of the best tanks in the game. he's also one of the best candidates for defending castles from enemy surprise attacks. Cons: very weak to magic, this build also requires the knowledge about specific secret items, in order to make it functional. some people also prefer to have Beowulf as his father due to Pursuit being more reliable in the long run compared to random Critical damage, wich becomes also obsolete once a weapon reaches 50 kills. weak to Knight Killer lances. Skill set: [Jamke x Aideen] Unit overview: a good healer from early to late-game chapters. - Main roles: Healer | Debuffer (can become a damage dealer after promotion) Pros: plenty of variety with healing/utility staffs after promotion, she can also debuff enemies and deal some damage to armored units. Cons: very weak to physical attacks, she'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. however, ranged healing staffs can help her with covering long distances. Skill set: [Jamke x Aideen] Unit overview: a decent mobile archer that relies on random critical damage from his Killer bow passive skill( ). - Main roles: Mobile damage dealer Pros: always useful for kiting melee enemies, can potentially one-shot enemies with low defence in case of critical hits. he can also inherit a Hero bow due to his parents. Cons: very weak to magic, he'll become more of a backup unit in late-game chapters, rather than a main damage dealer. some people also prefer Midir as father over Jamke due to Pursuit stacking better with the Hero bow. weak to Knight Killer lances. Skill set: [Lex x Tiltyu] Unit overview: a balanced and versatile mobile mage that relies on risky play. mostly suited for debuffing enemies until he gets to low HP, after that he can switch weapons depending on the situation and enemies in order to always perform critical hits on every turn. - Main roles: Damage dealer (becomes mobile after promotion) Pros: thanks to Elite/Paragon, he'll level up faster compared to other units, making him a good debuffer way earlier. being a versatile unit, he can deal both physical and magical damage depending on enemy weakness. Cons: this build becomes really useful only on low HP, wich can be very risky in case Arthur won't manage to survive the enemy attacks. his average stats also make him more suited to fight against physical classes, rather than mages. weak to Knight Killer lances. Skill set: [Lex x Tiltyu] Unit overview: a balanced and versatile mage that relies on risky play. suited for both debuffing enemies and dealing magical damage, when she gets to low HP she'll be able to always perform critical hits on every turn. - Main roles: Damage dealer (can be a healer/debuffer after promotion) Pros: thanks to Elite/Paragon, she'll level up faster compared to other units, making her a good debuffer/damage dealer way earlier. after promotion, she'll get even more chances to level up thanks to healing staffs. being a versatile unit, she can debuff enemies, deal decent damage and tons of magical damage when low on HP, and even heal allies. she also has more balanced stats compared to her brother, however she works better as a nuker/healer, rather than a melee damage dealer. Cons: this build becomes really useful only on low HP, wich can be very risky in case Tinny won't manage to survive the enemy attacks. she'll also be left behind quite often due to being on foot. Skill set: [Levin x Fury] Unit overview: one of the strongest( if not THE strongest ) mage units in the game, always dealing massive amounts of magical damage. - Main roles: Damage dealer | Healer | Debuffer Pros: beside being a god-like nuker, he can also debuff enemies and heal allies when needed. he works very well as dodge tank too, making him almost a perfect unit by himself. Cons: virtually, he has almost none when wielding the Holsety tome. the only classes that could stand a chance against Sety would be either Swordmasters with Hero swords, or armored units like Generals/Barons with Great Shield. the only true downpoint is that he's on foot. Skill set: [Levin x Fury] Unit overview: another good anti-mage unit with great mobility due to being a flying unit. - Main roles: Mobile damage dealer | Mobile anti-mage unit (can be a healer after promotion) Pros: she can deal both physical and magical damage depending on the gear available, giving her better damage output against different classes. she can also heal allies when needed, wich in turn will give her more chances to level up. with a Barrier sword and Barrier ring, she becomes the bane of mages. a Speed ring can also help with dodge tanking eventually. Cons: not really great against physical classes until promotion, except for brigands. weak to Knight Killer lances, Clipper swords and bows. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: a well balanced mobile unit that can deal lots of damage thanks to the sinergy between Pursuit and the Hero lance, even more when that reaches 50 kills. - Main roles: Mobile damage dealer | Mobile dodge-tank Pros: Fin will not only be dealing damage, but will also get better survival chances in case he'll get to low HP due to Prayer. he's one of the main candidates for defending castles from enemy surprise attacks. Cons: he has pretty much the same role of a Jeigan type of unit, just with a different build. basicly, he is to Leaf what Oifaye is to Seliph. weak to Knight Killer lances. Skill set: [Lachesis x Noish] Unit overview: a well balanced unit that can heal and support allies with Charisma, along with dealing random damage spikes thanks to Critical. - Main roles: Mobile healer | Mobile supporter Pros: a good support unit, mostly suited for healing. her Prayer sword( ) will give her better survival chances in case she'll get low on HP. she can kite enemies with magic swords too, and the Earth sword will also negate the Big Shield effect from armored units. Cons: mostly suited as support unit/healer due to her average stats. some people also prefer to have Beowulf as her father due to Pursuit being more reliable in the long run compared to random Critical damage, wich becomes also obsolete once a weapon reaches 50 kills. weak to Knight Killer lances. Skill set: [Cuan x Ethlin] Unit overview: one of the strongest units in the game, also very versatile. - Main roles: Damage dealer (becomes mobile after promotion, can be a healer/debuffer too) Pros: his stats will allow him to deal tons of damage quite often, and the variety of items available give him a huge advantage over other units. mainly a front-line damage dealer, he can also destroy flying units with bows, heal allies with staffs, and counter ranged units with magic. he can eventually use Silver axes/lances too. Cons: the only downpoint is the low Resistance, wich makes him weaker to magical attacks. weak to Knight Killer lances too. besides, he will need plenty of attentions in order to improve before promotion. an Elite ring is always recommended for that. Skill set: [Cuan x Ethlin] Unit overview: another one of the strongest units in the game, and probably one of the best tanks in terms of raw stats. - Main roles: Mobile tank | Mobile damage dealer Pros: her stats together with her Crusader weapon will allow her to deal massive damage quite often, along with giving her the role of front-line tank. she also joins our army when she's close to lv20, so she'll be able to promote quite soon. Cons: the only downpoint is the low Resistance, wich makes her weaker to magical attacks. weak to Clipper swords and bows. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: a very good tank unit, with nice weapons variety too. - Main roles: Tank Pros: he's able to take on any kind of melee enemy thanks to the access to multiple physical weapons, wich gives him a good advantage in terms of weapons triangle mechanic. together with Great Shield and Ambush/Vantage, he will have better survival chances overall. he works well against flying enemies too, and he's one of the main candidates for defending castles from enemy surprise attacks. Cons: low Resistance and Speed will allow enemies to deal more magical damage, and also double attack more often. weak to Armorbreaker swords. he'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot, and his recruitment also requires specific goals to be achieved. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: Unit overview: a decent healer from late-game chapters. - Main roles: Healer | Debuffer (can be a damage dealer after promotion) Pros: plenty of variety with healing/utility staffs after promotion, he can eventually debuff enemies and deal some damage to armored units. the Berserk staff will also help a lot in the last chapter. Cons: very weak to physical attacks, he'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. however, ranged healing staffs can help her with covering long distances. his recruitment also requires specific goals to be achieved, same goes for the Berserk staff. Skill set: [Midir x Brigid] Unit overview: probably the best archer in 2nd generation, that relies on Pursuit, Charge and Hero bow to deal multiple hits. - Main roles: Damage dealer Pros: thanks to this build, he'll be dealing multiple attacks quite often, and even one-shot low defence enemies with his Crusader weapon. he's the bane of flying units. the Ichivail also gives him the passive Life skill( ), so he will be able to take on other ranged units by himself without worrying too much about getting healed. Cons: very weak to magical attacks, he'll be left behind quite often due to being on foot. some people also prefer to have Dew or Holyn as father instead of Midir due to Patty getting Sol from Dew, or a B rank in swords+Luna from Holyn, along with different stats growths thanks to Holyn's Odo blood. Skill set: [Eltshan x Grahnye] Unit overview: one of the strongest units in the game, that relies mostly on random critical damage. - Main roles: Mobile damage dealer | Mobile anti-mage unit Pros: yet another anti-mage unit, Aless can also do well with magic swords in order to kite melee enemies, or eventually destroy enemy mounted units with a Knight Killer lance even before promotion. Ambush/Vantage will also give him better survival chances. a Thief ring is recommended in order to keep up with the Crusader weapon repair costs, since that will be his main way to deal critical damage due to the sword's passive skill( ). Cons: having overall balanced stats, he's basicly a jack of all trades, but master of none. he shines mostly when using his Crusader weapon, otherwise he's quite average compared to other units in the same category. weak to Knight Killer lances too. Skill set: [---] Unit overview: a quite useful dancer that can cover long distances. - Main roles: Supporter Pros: the Leg and knight ring will allow her to move freely, giving extra turns up to 4 units at once. she can also support allies thanks to Charisma. a Thief sword can eventually help her with getting money from brigands, in case she'll really need it. Cons: having very low stats, she's more suited to support allies only against melee enemies, while it would be safer to stay far away in case there's ranged units nearby. since she can die easily, she's more suited for the back rows, unless she's well protected. ...and that's all from my last run of the game. it took me some hours to get this thread running, hopefully it will be enough for now. as always, feel free to share other infos and/or ideas for different units builds.
