  2. I've made my distaste of SoV's story no secret on this forum and after two and a half playthroughs of the game that opinion has yet to change. The reason for that is the titular protagonist, Alm. What bothers me about Alm(and I should stress this issue only applies to his SoV incarnation) is that he doesn't at all fit the story that he is a part of. Say what you will about Corrin, Chrom, Edelgard, Byleth, Ephriam, Ike, or any of the other lords but at least their character arcs and characterization fit the themes and ideas their stories set out to explore. Alm doesn't in a lot of ways. LIke he's a fine enough character in vacuum but he just doesn't work for this story specifically. SoV is a story about how strength and kindness and strength on their when taken to extremes will ultimately lead to a kingdom's ruin which are shown in the degenerating gods duma and mila. It is only in the marriage of those two philosophies that a kingdom can truly prosper. This theme is shown in a lot of ways but the primary way is with the protagonists Alm and Celica who are supposed to represent Duma's and Mila's ideals respectively. Their character arcs are supposed to be reflective of the story's themes of seemingly conflicting yet complimentary ideals which is why the romance between the two is pushed so heavily. The two are supposed to take these ideals of strength and kindness to the extreme and realize they need pieces of the other within themselves to overcome their struggles. Celica represents Mila's ideals just fine and is narratively punished for lacking the strength needed to protect herself or her overly kind nature which gets taken advantage of. The problem lies with Alm. He's too soft and kind and too much of a nice guy. He's not very ruthless or if he was the story never really puts much emphasis on it. Like he's more representative of Mila's ideals than Duma's. Him killing his father is supposed to be the climax of his arc where, in a lust for power and justice, ultimately ends accidentally killing his only remaining family but it doesn't really come off that way because he was never shown to be power hungry or ruthless. He never showed hostility towards Rudolf to my memory except maybe in Celica's dream sequence which never really came to pass. He was shown to be a protector of the weak, that aspect of his character remains consistent. Like in the early stages of the story it's actually quite good where he recklessly charges in on a bandit hideout to save silque or his steadfast determination to march on Rigel. However, those are really the two instances of this happening at least to my recollection. He's never really shown to question his actions nor are his actions portrayed in any negative light except killing his own dad. Like I said, Alm is way too soft here. He's too much of a nice guy light novel protagonist for this story to really work the way it wants to. It's strange because Gaiden, the awakening DLC, and even the manga characterize him just fine with all his ruthlessness intact. I wonder what happened here. Anyway, sorry for the rant I just needed to get that off my chest.
  3. Royal Sword really had an increase in memorability and identity from Gaiden. It correlates incredibly well to the themes and Celica's new prf sword: Beloved Zofia. It also helps give Alm a different standout weapon than being another Falchion user among Falchion users. Alm's Falchion is easily the least standout, has the least screentime and completely vanishes off the face of the earth, . With his amiibo completely locking Alm in future games with compatibility or just general spinoffs featuring FE characters. I really hope we don't have another Heroes where Royal Sword was completely shafted.
  4. I've been writing on and off for a while, but between a relatively recent replay of Echoes and a less-recent replaying of GotHW, I came up with a Crossover story centered around Sigurd surviving Belhalla in a modern AU where he finds himself barred from contacting anyone he ever knew. While I'll try to update it here first from here on, here's the first chapter of Little Chalphy (link leads to AO3, so warning if your Job/School forbids access to it). Any feedback is welcome here. While I've been translating documentation and whatnot for a long time, it was only up until a few years ago that I gained enough confidence to start writing fiction in English, so any daft bits you find that sound odd/goofy/out of place to you, do not hesitate to let me know. Good day to you all and thanks in advance.
  5. When I looked back on the story of Shadows of Valentia, I realized something that confused me: how does Desaix know Alm is Rudolf's son? Rudolf gave Alm to Mycen to protect Alm; his very existence was supposed to be a secret known only to them. Sure, the fact that Rudolf and Mycen were old friends was fairly common knowledge, but Rudolf having a kid at all was supposed to be a complete secret. And yet, when Desaix hears from Fernand about a kid named Alm that's Mycen's grandson, he has this to say: Desaix: …What? Mycen’s grandson?! Fernand: Indeed. Clive has thrown all of our ideals at the feet of the unworthy. He’s made the boy a figurehead just to leverage some decrepit hero’s name. Well, I say damn them all! There. You have my story. Now kill me and be done with it. Desaix: But this doesn’t make sense. Mycen didn’t have any… Ah… Now I see this for what it is. Rudolf, you villainous dastard… I understand knowing Mycen never had kids and figuring something was up, but immediately concluding that Rudolf has something to do with it is rather odd. It could be excused as just him thinking Rudolf's sabotaging him and not that he's figured out Alm's true heritage, but, when you defeat him in Act 3, he says this: Desaix: Damn you, Mycen… You think to…hand Zofia over to Rudolf’s pup…? T-traitorous dastard…! How does he know? It's strongly implied that Jedah doesn't know until he hears about Alm having the brand. Yet Desaix is able to figure it out? How does one jump from "Mycen never had kids" to "this kid is Rudolf's secret son that no one knows even exists".
  6. ...Would he try to grow Mycens mustache or Rudolfs beard?
  7. Since the latest Nintendo Direct shown that there is an upcoming Super Smash Bros. title happened today and the game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch system on 2018. But, we haven't seen any footages nor any characters revealed for the upcoming Fire Emblem Switch title and they haven't shown the Fire Emblem Switch title in today's Direct. I'm guessing that we could see Alm (he does use a bow since he does use a bow in his Hero class on Gaiden and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and it would avoid use the Plain Swordsman category since what happened to Chrom when he was going to be planned during at Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U) or probably add Celica since Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia was released last year and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia did managed to sold well outside of Japan and it did managed to outsold Pokemon Sun and Moon's numbers since May as one of the Top 10 Best Selling Nintendo 3DS games. However, since the upcoming Fire Emblem Switch title is coming to the same year as the upcoming Super Smash Bros. title, but we have no idea which games is going to be coming out first. I totally think the Fire Emblem Switch protagonist is probably going to be showing up either as an Unlockable Newcomer similar to like Roy in Super Smash Bros. Melee since Roy's game The Binding Blade did released after Super Smash Bros. Melee or he/she will might show up as a DLC Newcomer similar to like Corrin since Fire Emblem Fates did released after Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. I don't think it would make any sense and we don't exactly know if he/she will show up as a default fighter since his/her game is going to be coming this year if the Fire Emblem Switch title as well as the Super Smash Bros. Switch title and we still don't have a single release date confirmed other than confirmed 2018 for both of these titles. I know that Sakurai did add Roy and Corrin to the roster as Unlockable, DLC, vice versa since Sakurai did said he's a big fan of the Fire Emblem series and I totally think we could see the upcoming Fire Emblem Switch protagonist being appearing for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Switch title sometime during at the development. What do you guys think how will the protagonist of the upcoming Fire Emblem Switch title will show up for the upcoming Nintendo Switch title of Super Smash Bros.? I'm pretty sure we could see some or a few Nintendo related characters (like any ARMS characters, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, etc.) who debut from the Nintendo Switch games that were released around 2017 through early or mid 2018 will might show up for upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch either as default, unlockable, or even DLC newcomers. Edit: The E3 Presentation and the latest Nintendo Direct confirms the new title for both games revealed to be as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for December 9, 2018 and Fire Emblem: Three Houses is now set to Spring 2019 instead of 2018.
  8. Lv. 40 Stats: HP - 42/45/48 Atk - 30/33/36 Spd - 27/30/33 Def - 24/28/31 Res - 19/22/25 Total: 157~158 Introduction Alm, a young boy from the quiet Ram Village, and later leader of the Zofian Resistance, was introduced into Heroes to advertise the game he stars in, Fire Emblem Echoes. He was released six days before Echoes hit the stores in Japan, so Heroes is technically the debut of this version of Alm. As the fourth Falchion user in the game, Alm was given rather balanced stats overall. He's not the lowest in anything among the four, nor is the best at anything in particular. While that would seem to make him a jack of all trades, the lack of defining traits unfortunately made him outclassed at every role. His 33/30 offenses leave much to be desired; his Attack stat is mediocre, and his Speed leaves him doubled by many offensive units, while not doubling many in return. His bulk is above average, but not enough to make him tanky, particularly since he is easily doubled. As such, his best options were to settle for being either a Falchion healer with Renewal, or a somewhat reusable Quick Riposte user, which limits his scope. However, with the Refinery update of 2/8, Alm is reborn. Alm's refined Falchion not only has a welcome HP +3 and Level 3 Renewal, but also the ability to do a Brave weapon attack when he is at 100% health, at the cost of taking 5 recoil damage post-combat. This is a groundbreaking upgrade; Alm now has a 16 Might Brave Sword (double the normal, 5 more than Amiti) with no Speed penalty, with a downside that is very easily mitigated by the Falchion's own self-healing. In addition, the Falchion's Dragon effectiveness combined with this new upgrade allows him to decimate even Blue Dragons, a very dominating enemy type that would have given him trouble before. Once a master of none, Alm is now very much a top dog in Player Phase offense. Sets "Don't worry, Celica." (Full offense) "Why won’t you attack?" (Mixed Phase) "So then... Will you stand with me?" (All-rounder) Things to look out for As Alm is now essentially a Brave Sword unit, he suffers some of those downfalls as well. The Deflect Melee Seal is still relatively rare as it is expensive to make, but it is possible that Deflect Melee Nowi/F!Corrin may appear to deal with Alm, who can ORKO a lot of their current builds. Be sure to check skills before attacking. Steady Breath sets can stop Alm from attacking into really bulky enemies, the most common being Black Knight and Brave Ike, who can retaliate with powerful Specials, especially if boosted by Wrath. Brave Ike is doubly a problem due to Urvan's triple Deflect, which lowers Alm's damage output regardless of which Phase Alm tries to deal with him. Estucheon or Pavise can be run to stop these units from killing Alm on the counter, at the cost of Special-based firepower, which may or may not be worth it depending on your lineup or tactics.
  9. I believe the best lord in my opinion is Lucina, and Kris is the worst. (I counted the avatars as Lords, because they are relevant to the story and they can't die, or you lose.) Image Below indicates my favorite and least favorite lords.
  10. I personally like Alm's route better. I just really hate Desert Maps, and Swamp Maps. And I just like Alm better. Plus keeping Celica's army alive is a pain.
  11. Thread title. I saw an interesting conversation over at the "Ike's Dissonance" thread regarding Alm and his personality/character. In an attempt to not derail that thread any further, I've started this one. As for my thoughts: I think his VA's great, I like the little quips and jokes he makes whenever you examine something, and I think his personality is pretty chill. Overall, I believe him to be an entertainingly written character. However... I believe he's in the completely wrong game. In the original Gaiden, the thing that made Alm and Celica interesting was that they represented two ideals; Celica represented peace and kindness (Mila), whereas Alm represented power and aggression (Duma). I can't quite put my finger on it, but Alm in this game feels... off, somehow. It didn't feel like he was representing that sort of extreme ideal that Duma embodied. As such, this theme of balancing out two extreme ideologies fell flat, IMO. I don't know. I'm tired. What are your thoughts? Do you like/dislike him? Why?
  12. A friend of mine runs a podcast called Monkey Broadcast. It's latest episode features a spoiler free review of Echoes, so be sure to check it out at your leisure as any he would appreciate support or feedback you could give him. At 1:02:10 his co-host, SvenTheCrusader, starts a discussion on the Dungeons and Dragons based web series Critical Role, run by Matt Mercer, the voice of Chrom, and starring other FE VAs such as Laura Bailey, Sam Riegel, Travis Willingham and Liam O'Brien:
  13. I have watched the whole story of Echoes (not having money for a 3DS + the game sucks), and I found myself with this question:
  14. Okay, Okay, so I just started act 3, and I've never played Gaiden before, BUT i've played all the other games released in America. I'm just shocked. Celica goes from overjoyed to see Alm, to anger that he's here in the first place, then really angry that he's leading the war. Then when he tries to defend himself, she insults him, gets more upset and storms off. I know something like this was needed so we had the Dual Protagonist system employed in Gaiden/Echoes, but it seems so contrived and forced. Like, when was she a pacifist? like she wants to stop the war without bloodshed, wait what? Celica, what about the 100-odd pirated you MURDERED to get here!? you led a small army and RAIDED A PIRATE BASE, so you wanted to be helpful and secure a small part to help the people who raised you and liberate them from their oppressors. sounds like a microcosm of what Alm's doing on his side. and this is fire emblem! you're not gonna just stroll on over to Milla's temple without a fight and magically fix everything. No, she's gotta fight her way there, The map tells me so. otherwise the game would be boring. so what the heck? She just comes off as a judgemental bigot. that scene just comes off like: "why are you here Alm! you're not supposed to be fighting and leading the war and fighting and killing people!" She says while holding her pirate-blood soaked golden knife in her hand and two cities praising her for murdering the pirates. While Alm is holding his own bloodied sword and has a country praising him for doing the same, but with the rigelians. and she thinks what she's doing is right. I'm just confused by this. so anyone who shares my views on this, or doesn't, please comment below. If you've played gaiden before I'd love to hear how it went out in that game. but yeah, I literally just started Act 3 and that scene made me so upset that it felt like it ruined Celica for me, who was really growing on me and becoming one of my favorite lords ever.
  15. Hey everyone, I'm back with another interview. This time it's Kyle McCarley, the voice of Alm in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia as well as Fire Emblem Heroes. He also did Soren's voice for Heroes. He gave some incredibly in depth answers about the process of auditioning and recording for Echoes and Heroes. He also had some really cool insights about Alm's character that he does without getting into any spoilers. I had a blast conducting it and hope you enjoy it too. https://comedyngaming.com/news/interview-kyle-mccarley-voice-alm-fire-emblem-echoes
  16. I just saw five videos that NintenDann's channel, I don't see a topic was created and this was uploaded from 3 hours ago. And holy crap at that reunion scene after the Cutscene. Wow, just wow. They managed give a tough personality for Celica and got an argument with Alm, poor Alm that he didn't get a chance how the Ram Village was doing. I feel a lot speechless. By the way, Atlas's village is still called Mountain Village since Awakening has it in an island instead of the mountain of Zofia and the woman that was next to Atlas when she was talking about her son saids "Dragon Shrine", but I'll look at the rest of the videos later. Boss Battle of Fernand was split into two parts. By the way, the knight boss in the first map of Alm's route in Act 3 name is Zakson and the boss that is fought where Palla and Catria is at name is Garth. (I don't know if Garth and Barth are like brothers since they did have the same portraits in the original game and that almost have the same name as well?) Also, the other four videos are in this spoiler tag: Edit: I managed the watched the whole video on the battle where Zakson and Frenand are fought, Tobin has an Arts combat skill called "Heavy Draw".
  17. GameXplain just uploaded the video that showed a close up look at both of the amiibos and the game. This was actually just uploaded from a few minutes ago and I wondered has the review copies or this is just could be an another demo, but I wondered what footage will GameXplain will allow to show since they appeared to snapshot the English version of the game as well? Edit: Clarified to GameXplain to ask if this was a Review Copy or an another Demo Event of the game, Andre, Derrick's, or Ash's answer was the demo event, not a review copy yet.
  18. Hi there everyone. My name is Mangs and I have recently started a new series called the Fire Emblem Echoes, Shadows of Valentia character previews. These are very similar to the spotlights I have done before, only that they are shorter, completely free of spoilers, and showcases some of the upcoming characters we will see in Gaidens remake, Shadows of Valentia. The purpose of these previews is to entertain both veterans who enjoyed gaiden, as well as showing newer players what kind of characters they can expect in the new release. I will showcase their new art next to the old one and make comparisons on how they’ve changed. Since growth rates and bases will arguably remain the same in the remake, I am also going over their Gaiden stats just to give the viewers an idea of how the unit will perform. I will update this thread as more previews are made, and add them to this list as well. I appreciate any feedback you might have to give me, and of course, if there’s any characters you’d like to see me make previews of next, let me know in this thread, or in the comment section of one of my videos! Alm Celica Mae Kamui Boey Silque Valbar Genny Saber Kliff
  19. I was trying to figure out who was voicing Alm in the latest trailer that was called "Zofia's Call". And I wasn't exactly sure if that was Ben Diskin (the same guy who voiced Hayoto, Jakob, and Saizo from Fates and Matthew from Heroes) since Alm's voice sounds alot similar at first. But, Ben Diskin just confirmed on Twitter from a couple of minutes ago that he doesn't recall voicing Alm nor have a single role in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia and he was really surprised that someone who voiced Alm in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia sounded alot like his acting voice when he did make his Hayoto, Numbah 2 (from Kids Next Door), and Toxsa (from Tenkai Knights) voice. But, does anyone really recognize Alm's voice from the trailer, I think it could be Bryce Papenbrook or an another voice actor might have voiced Alm?
  20. So I noticed that there hasn't been a tier list for lords in these forums so I thought we could make one and discuss. Like any tier list this one can totally change (and probably will change several times) if a good argument is being made for said changes. This list will just give us something to start with. I'm looking forward to what you guys have to say. Oh quick question: Should we add in Lucina and if so, where would you say she should go? (Assume Robin!Lucina for this tier list). *Assume Ephraim is being rated on his performance in Ephraim route. Eirika is also being rated on her performance in Eirika route. Top Tier 1) Sigurd 2) Alm 3) RD Ike 4) Seliph 5) FE 1 Marth Solid Tier 6) Ephraim 7) FE 9 Ike 8) Chrom 9) FE 12 Marth 10) FE 3 Marth (Book 2) Mixed Bag Tier 11) Hector 12) Leif 13) Celica 14) Micaiah Bottom Tier 15) Shadow Dragon Marth 16) Eirika 17) Lyn 18) Eliwood 19) Roy Can't Comment Tier *FE 3 Book 1 Marth* Okay so I haven't played FE 3 Book 1 so I don't know how powerful Marth is in that part of Fire Emblem 3. Can anyone who has played FE 3 Book 1 give me feedback about that please? EDIT # 1: Ephraim has been moved to top of Solid Tier. FE 3 Marth has been moved to Solid Tier. Celica and Leif have switched places.
  21. So I've had a question that's been bugging me for a while and I thought I'd ask you guys and see what you thought. Who of the various lords do you consider the most efficient in their game? FE 1 Marth FE 12 Marth Hector Alm Chrom Seliph FE 9 Ike
