One thing I really loved about that book was when the Western husband puts soy sauce on one of the vegetable dishes that one of the club members' moms makes for a dinner. That alone was enough to reserve a place in my heart. I guess I still wonder about the Sophie's Choice(IIRC)'ish moment one of them goes through while leaving the country. Back when I was a kid I had a brutal view of existence that made little sense in contrast to my life of ease, so I think I had a fixation on those kinds of things.
