Never displayed much interest in FE Cipher, but artwork was pleasant.

Random light desire- are there such things posters that consist of nothing but tens to hundreds of trading cards arranged tightly into a rectangle? Each is a modern mini piece of art, art museums should collect them I most sincerely say. I would love to decorate a bedroom wall with a cascading collage of FE Cipher or Pokemon cards.

The music is.....pretty forgettable actually, which is strange to say in a Modern FE world and in a game about music, because every Fire Emblem game since Awakening has had solid OSTs (before Awakening, most Fire Emblem games had like five memorable songs at most). The vocal songs themselves are pretty good but other than that, the soundtrack is just there. Good in the moment but nothing to really write home about.

Yeah, it's ironic that a game with a music vibe to it, the Wii U disc even looks a bit like an old record, that the soundtrack is not so memorable outside of the songs.

I can see and can agree with a lot of what you said. Touma and Kiria best, dungeon puzzles can get a bit tedious (the maid dresses redux come to mind), and the game's style and efforts big and small to maintain that flair was impressive.

And because I forgot to say it before, congrats on making it through to the end of TMS!😉

I guess i could emulate Persona 3 though (with the mod that lets me control my party members).

Persona 3 comes in three versions: the original release, FES- an update on the original, and Portable. Portable lets you control everyone by default.

If you can emulate PSP games alright, then you could try that, although there are some presentation differences due to differences in tech capabilities and additional content that lead some to prefer FES to Portable. If Portable runs smoothly and FES does not though, Portable might be your best and only option.

As someone who has only played SMTIV, Apocalypse and Strange Journey Redux (don't play this one!), I can definitely attest to the dark tone of those games at the very least.

No Devil Survivor? For shame!

  • DS1 is classic SMT alignments done with not-so-flat characters in a thrilling setting.
  • DS2 is still apocalyptic, with an 11th hour alignment decision.
    • But DS2 has been called Persona-esque with its "Fate Levels" being akin to Social Links/Confidants for each of the playable characters. And there is a good bit of humor- does "Operation Box" sound at all serious to you? A tsundere and a slight perv scene (which you can opt out of) are additional signs that this is "anime".

I've found myself largely resistant to feeling the darkness of SMT at this point, unless I end up fighting someone I kind of like because I picked a different alignment- but that guilt I can feel with any game.

I wanted to feel drained when they threw me in jail in Sector Bootes in Strange Journey and you could see and hear humans being experimented, tortured, and killed by demons, but I didn't feel it as much as I wanted to. This said, there is one part of SMTIV that gets me every time (SPOILERS):

Spoiler

Reverse Hills. Finding out and seeing how the red pills were made by kidnapping, breeding, and raising children to extract their brain cells until they neurologically deteriorate to the point of death, never failed to make sick to my stomach in all of my four playthroughs. I always wanted to get that part done quickly, because it was so exhausting to witness it. But that bleakness felt good somehow, it was the non-edgy darkness SMT aspires to have.

his blood has the special property to cleanse Corruption from the Blood Maidens, and he was given a gun that is connected to his blood system known as the Mary Gun

That sounds oddly akin to something I was reading yesterday. Quantum Devil Saga, a set of 5 novels that is based on Digital Devil Saga- but not the same thing- had droplets of Sera's blood easing the feral craze induced by the hunger of the Avatars. In DDS, that isn't the case, Sera needed only to sing a song to return the humanity to the bearers of the Atma.

It's actually supposed to be "Libero", I think. The fond is a bit weird there.

Ah. In that case, "Libero" roughly translates in Spanish to "to free". And given that's exactly what Red Riding Hood did at the start of the game, it makes sense.

It affects Hamel, which is directly tied to Sky. It also affects the action of Osbro, which they've been building up the whole series.

The problem isn't that it is an asspull, but that it removes all the politics, human actions and responsibilities and shoves it all on the curse. No one can be bad. Everyone is good. Everyone will live anyway. I expect better from Falcom.

Spoiler

Yeah, i'm sure Joachim was a good guy the whole time.

It's really just Osborne but even with the curse, he's still not the nicest guy out there. And all the other series villains weren't affected by the curse at all. I don't see the curse changing the actions of Richard, Joachim, the Crois and even Ouroborus. Ouroborus didn't even have anything to do with the curse, they just got roped in and were like "alright might as well".

I will sorta agree with you on the killing characters part. Cold Steel had too many fakeouts. It's not even done well. Imagine if Falcom actually had the balls to kill off Olivier?

I had to actually look this one up, as well as the second LCD puzzle because i couldn't get a clear view of what i needed to do.

PSP emulation is easy so i'll probably just play the Portable version. The fact that being able to control everyone is a default thing and not something have to install myself is a plus. Is the additional content in FES needed or is it just a bonus?

Spoiler

It's not just Osborne, it's whole of Erebonia, and actions of Erebonia affected other Nations. Hamel is prime example.

I didn't mention other antagonists, but it did affect the whole series.

God Eater 3's final update has hit us last week, but since I'm playing Final Fantasy 12, I've yet to sink my teeth into the new content. That Square Enix eShop sale could not have come at a better time--when I was busy getting logistics and shit done so I could work from home. On the flip side, I've had to use my smartphone to coordinate with the folks I'm supporting, which is not fun if your phone is even remotely a potato.

The major differences between Portable and FES, from what I gather:

FES:

  • Playable epilogue called The Answer. Gameplay-wise it's on the tedious side, a supposed "30 hour grindfest", no Social Links or school stuff in this bonus story, and the writing is a mixed bag. Might be better to just YouTube this afterwards.
  • Characters cannot be controlled other than the main protag, at most, you get to set the AIs to specific behaviors.
  • A world you can walk around in 3D.
  • Anime/FMV cutscenes.

Portable:

  • All characters can be directly controlled.
  • Option to play as a female silent protag- this is the only Persona to have a gender choice. Social Links can significantly differ with her, and a few pieces of music are replaced with new ones too.
  • You point and click to various locations instead of walking around.
  • Anime cutscenes replaced with in-game graphics.

I've seen opinions divided over which version is better.

Assuming the Switch preformance isn't shit, i'll be double dipping on this. Not right away though because of course it's being released during a time i'll be ocean deep in XenoblaDE.

Yes! I'm totally going to get this again for the Switch when. It comes out! Are there any changes that they noted from the original version, or is it a port?

Well, not much progress today.  Did the next step of Pioneer Town and only made it to Burland, to find the shield is now in Femiscyria. Thankfully I already have the Magma Staff needed to access the place, as it was back at Zamoksva. I like that there's enough open-endness about where to go. Burland and Canalot have leads to each other, while the former can also point you to Zamoksva, which you already have been directed to, back at the Palais de Léon. Zamoksva also directs you to Canalot (well, at Zalenagrad to be more exact).

Although I do wonder how early was I suppose to revisit Burland, considering it has a Thief's Key door. On the other hand, the Zoom list puts Burland and Strathbaile after Canalot. Usually, Zoom places are positioned in the intended order of visit. I say intended since so far each game (save I since Zoom only lead back to Tantegel) has at least one place wrong for what is supposed to be the intended order. Right now here in IV Laissez Fayre is between Havre Léon and Zamoksva. Only reason to head for Laissez Fayre before Canalot (to pick up Tom Foolery for the Zenithian Helm acquisition) is doing the corresponding part of Pioneer Town. Ah well!

I've yet to go to Endor to open up those Magic Key doors found in there, which I'll do before heading for Femiscyria... some other day.

Okay, never mind, went to Endor before heading to sleep. Man, a shop with Liquid Metal Armour on sale! Best armour for most of the party; but quite pricey at 35K gold a piece... which, considering the Casino is right next door, one could get a full set at this point of the game. Prayer Rings are only 500 casino tokens each, and sell for like 2250-2500 or so gold. With a little patience, one could rack up the money and get those armours. I won't. Not going to get them right now when it's still exploitative.

I could tell you when they go on sale on steam or something, if you use steam for playing games nowadays.

The reason is that there are too many other games that I had set my sights on. And whenever I have some leeway, another game comes out that catches my interest.
As for Steam... I'm not a PC Gamer at all. Call me a Console Peasant, or however that meme went.

I see! That does make sense. Even in gameplay, since she has the widest array of roles she can fulfill in combat with her options for Jobs.

Well then I do hope you still decide to try out Danganronpa regardless, I think you would enjoy it based on your taste in games, don't feel the need to rush though, there's plenty of games to-

WHAT
You haven't played Devil Survivor either?!
I feel like at this point you're trying to deliberately avoid every game series I like.

Something I found odd in Xenoblade 2: There aren't very many level 70-80 Unique Enemies to fight, it doesn't feel like there are many enemies in this level area generally.

I won't. I'll keep you alive, forever. Reborn with every death, all memories inherited at that moment. But no matter how hard you try, how much you yearn to change the world, you never will. You could conquer the ends of the Earth, and I shall thwart any lasting legacy. Resign yourself to eternal life ever futile.

But seriously, if you still have a working 3DS, it's not too late! The first Devil Survivor was my gateway to SMT, they're still very good games, and relatively easy by SMT standards. A couple other details:

  • Movement is done on a grid as with an SRPG- no dungeons to crawl through, but when you attack an enemy, it transitions to typical SMT combat. Extra Turns are very similar to Press Turns.
  • Each game is spread out over 7 days from morning to night. Each event/important battle you attend consumes 30 minutes of your current day, Free Battles are for grinding and cost no time- you can do them endlessly. You can't attend absolutely everything, so choose what you want to see wisely.

I do think the first Devil Survivor hits the atmosphere and story beats better than the second game. I love both a lot.
I know people can dislike the 2nd more because it's more "persona" but I like when games can do serious along with moments of silliness and brevity.
I think both games work fine for what they're going for, and since I love the characters in both games, I still think overall I enjoy them more in the 2nd, so that along with gameplay tweaks personally puts it above 1 for me, even if I fully admit I think 1 does a better job at what it wants to. Just personal preference.
