IRC Channel for Drafts

Hey guys, it's your friendly neighborhood Lord Raven! I'm making a drafts channel for IRC so we don't completely overrun IP.Chat! We can talk about anything in there, but it'll be the central hub for drafts chat hopefully!

There are directions in this thread that I will copy+paste word for word in this thread for your convenience.

DIRECTIONS

For all the IRC noobs out there.

To access the channel, either use the terrible applet or download an IRC client, such as mIRC. Or if you have Firefox, you can get Chatzilla, an easy to use add-on that acts as an IRC client. If you're on a Wii, you can use Mibbit.

To connect to the server, when using an IRC client, type (into the little box where you can type stuff):

/server irc.darkmyst.org

Once you're connected, you will have to join the channel, by typing:

/join #sfdrafts

Congratulations! You're now in! But there's more! You will have to choose a nickname. If your chosen nick is taken, then NickServ will warn you to change it. Once you find your desired nick, and it's not taken, you can register it by typing in:

/msg nickserv register [password] [your email]

Without the brackets. Afterwards, every time you connect to the server with that nickname, you will have to identify it as such:

/msg nickserv identify [password]

And you're done! There are some intricacies to working IRC and you'll learn those as you go.

In short, the channel name is #sfdrafts on irc.darkmyst.org.

The Ops in the channel are Refa, Horace, Eclipse, Paperblade, and myself. Alert us if you need anything, and alert us if you want to add some news to the chat topic! We should be able to update it often!

RULES

a) No flaming

b) Try not to spam too much

c) no porn or anything to that extent, no direct links to any of the chans, etc

d) Any problems with ops? Talk to one of us in private, firstly the op that's bothering you and then another op.

e) I'll allow bots, but if people abuse them then I will ban the bot and amend this rule.

f) Use your common sense.

Short sweet and simple, I'll enforce these rules actively and if people step out of line I will ban you from this chat if necessary. Thank you and have fun talking about drafts!

I apologize for all the draft chating that went on in the main chat. If you need someone to pin the blame on just throw it at me

And thanks Raven for making the channel

Don't worry, I'm fairly sure it was annoying people even before you were a member.

And yes good idea puts a feather in Raven's cap.

Hey guys please start a thread in fftf for chat quotes! Thanks! I just want this to be a sort of notification and question thread, not a thread about how much we dick around on IRC :p

I leave for like 2-3 months (school gets the better of me, and I think I'm a lot healthier now than I used to be because I'm not looking at the computer all the time) and it's all inactive, it used to be 10-15ish people per day and now everyone's left. Someone explain this to me, NOW. Because I set this up so that normal people wouldn't go into IP.Chat to be flooded by draft talk and also so people who despise IP.Chat for whatever reason don't need to go there (IRC is more stable than IP.Chat).

I heard recently it's because of a Skype chat, but that's probably not the full reason. I don't like the fact that everyone's split off into a skype chat btw, because I hate using skype chat and I sincerely just want to talk to people about stuff on #sfdrafts, and I know I'm not alone in this. It honestly cuts straight to the core that people would do that, and some of my friends who i encouraged to come back to #sfdrafts just decided to do it for a day and then went fuck it it's just Raven. (Of course, some of you guys are people who this is not aimed towards <3. Don't be fooled though, this list is very small).

Thank you and good night. It's 7:30 am and I should probably go to sleep if I want to move back in tomorrow.

Most of us use Skype chat nowadays, it's far more convenient when it comes to histories and the like. If someone posts a link to a thread, or to a Boardgame, you can go back to it. I personally find Skype more user-friendly and less clunky, but I've been using for ages anyway. If you're not a fan of Skype, that's fine, but pretty much everyone who did regular sfdrafts is in the group :P.

From what I know, it's probably because of the Skype chat. I didn't get on either too much, but I went on enough to notice that everyone moved to the Skype chat, myself included. I don't know why the move happened, and I'm sorry you seem upset and irritated that #sfdrafts is empty now, but maybe we can come to a resolve?

I've heard a lot from Kalas about how much he's annoyed that the move to Skype happened, since he doesn't have one. He liked it a lot when #sfdrafts was active, as did I. We need to think of a compromise of sorts.

People do both is the most obvious compromise, but then that runs the problem of the skype clique being all to themselves and not talking. The only solution I honestly have is either the Skype chat people continue to ruin the fucking point of #sfdrafts (since I'd much rather you guys have stayed on IP.Chat than created a skype chat) or they stop the skype chat altogether and come back to IRC.

Shin: I don't see the big deal in any of those things, BTW, simply because it's not that hard to retype something or it would be a pain in the ass to search through logs (especially with 50000 people talking). Besides, most IRC clients worth their salt have a smooth interface and logs your chats for you, and even allowing you to place the log in whatever folder you want. Once everything's set, it's set and it works fine.

Skype group chats are an absolute pain in the ass to deal with, and there's a LOT of exclusiveness that comes along with it, even if that was not your intent; the fact is that there are people on this board that absolutely want to use the IRC for #sfdrafts but absolutely do not want to deal with skype or just don't even know there is a skype chat. Don't forget about how easy it is to get into the chatroom with the Java Applet compared to the skype chat, and all the pains in the ass that comes with skype chat settings.

To sum things up, from my point of view, it's almost completely selfish that you guys have broken off into your own skype chat, because I also set this up because of community which is almost lost in this (however unintentionally) exclusive skype chat.

EDIT: And I do expect responses. I know people are reading this, and I care damn well about this enough that I will get responses. (PMs are also appreciated if you want to talk that way, I'm not very good at keeping my cool in public).

I think you need to handle this a little more maturely, you're getting unnecessarily upset over this. I think your main problem is that we're not using your creation, and that you're not in charge. We're happy using Skype, and we welcome any who wants to join to the group. I don't think it's selfish that the majority of us are using a different medium. Wanting everyone to go back to IRC just to satisfy one's ego and a select few individuals is another story. If you don't want to use Skype, that's fine. However, we're not coming back.

To be honest, Skype chats are tedious, and one hell of an annoyance, as they flood you with thousands of notifications any time anyone so much as blinks. IRC is much more convenient because you can just idle, it will alert you if anyone mentions you by name or other keyword you set up, and searching the logs is simple and elegant. The only advantage Skype has is voice chat. Seriously.

Now I'll admit I'm not the most active member of #sfdrafts, because I'm not the most active drafter, because I have a bunch of other things vying for my time, and maybe that means I should really care, but honestly, it was a convenient and fun way to get ahold of say Horace or Jedi if I needed them, see progress on and offer opinions/insight/etc. interesting new runs (Horace's absolute LTC FE4 for example).

You can turn off notifications for Skype chats. I have. For all of my group chats. It doesn't make me not hate them, because if I want to go back to a modestly active one I have to scroll through several thousand unread messages, but such is Skype.

That said, I get where Raven's coming from being mad over the #sfdrafts shit. You can say it's not exclusive and that you're happy to include, Shin, but a noobie has to get ahold of somebody from the drafts Skype chat, get on his friends list, and then get himself added to the chat. It adds several layers of exclusivity that really shouldn't be there. Hell, if I wanted to get into the draftchat I'd have to raise somebody in it and say "hey can you add me" (possibly to several people, if they're afk/not paying attention/busy) rather than /join #sfdrafts. EDIT: Note: I don't even know who on my Skype list is even in the drafting Skype chat, since I don't have the mainstays like you and Horace, so I'd have to go through the whole process of "hey shin could you add me to your skype and then add me to the draft chat y'know when you're online which isn't always when I am". /EDIT You can prefer it all you'd like, and I'll not slam you for that, but is *does* make the draft scene more cliquey.

All-in-all, I rarely used #sfdrafts and I'm not in the drafting Skype chat so I guess my say in the matter shouldn't exist.

The Skype chat's intention was never to replace #sfdrafts. We don't consider it a chat for drafting. I won't speak for everyone in the group, but I prefer Skype to IRC which is why I left #sfdrafts.

Just to make sure I fully understand this (again, i am not really biased in this matter):

>SF Skype chat is not to replace #sfdrafts because it's not a chat about drafting

>you actively and consciously switched to SF Skype in lieu of #sfdrafts

>when there is draft chat, you conduct it in SF Skype

ergo, SF Skype *has* replaced #sfdrafts
