Question on Supports and Unique Supports

From the webpage: http://serenesforest.net/fe13/support.html

It says for example Sariya --> Nono as support. Anna - Tiki as support. Viole --> Frederick, Libera.

Does this mean that Sariya can ONLY same gender support with Nono? That Viole can ONLY same gender support with Frederick and Libera?

I know MU can support with any character. But I would like to have further clarifications on the table... because imagine you have 2 same gendered characters fighting together for a long time thinking they establish support to increase battle powers but in the end you find they can't... is there any sort of "indication" in the game itself which tells you at the beginning X & Y (for example) cannot establish ranked support?

Other than her daughter(s) and MU, yes, Sariya's only female companion is Nono.

As for in-game indications, the Support menu--accessible both on the overworld and battle setup--shows all potential Support partners for each character as you recruit them. For instance, here are shots of Nono's, showing various potential Supporters and their current levels. So don't worry about wasting time with hopeless pairings.

Unlike FE7 (where you have to wait till the end of the game to see the compatible supports OR look it up somewhere like here) and like FE8, you can see in the battle preps (and in FE13's case, the support menu anywhere except when playing a map) and see the compatible people, including still yet to be recruited units:

NotyetRecruited.png

For example, in the screen above, Tana is able to support Syrene, who isn't recruited yet.

Same with Tiki and Nn:

NotRecruitedYetChikiSupports.png

The next part is image heavy, so I'll spoiler it for space purposes, but it's about the "hearts" that you see in the map:

Whenever two units are next to each other when attacking or defending, or "double" is active, they have a chance to dual-attack or dual-defend. Just like how Sumia is doubled with Krom here:

DualAttacking.pngSupporting.png

If the two are able to support, after an action, hearts will appear indicating the points rose:

Hearts.png

It doesn't matter if they've already reached S ranked support level, the mechanic will still occur.

An obvious example of an incompatible support partner is Tiamo and Krom:

TiamoDualAttackingWithKrom1.pngTiamoDualAttackingWithKrom2.png

No hearts afterward:

NoHearts.png

If the two are compatible support partners, when you are attacking, the other unit doesn't have to attack, just simply support you. When defending, they have to defend you for the hearts to appear. Healing and Dancing also cause the hearts to appear.

Hope that clears it up for you.

How does it look for a mutual gender support couple like Viole and Libera?

The same. Tiki also lists Lucina and Anna in that screenshot; it's just that the support levels only go up to A.

Wait, so when attacking, you get support points even if Dual Attack doesn't trigger, but when defending, Dual Guard has to trigger to gain support points? And just being doubled or next to each other when the turn ends alone doesn't increase support points? Is that correct?

Correction on my part. The support points will NOT go up if they are next to a partner if defending if they did not get Dual Guarded AND they CANNOT retaliate.

If they attack back, even if there's no Dual Guard or Dual Attack, the heart icons will appear.

If they attack back, even if there's no Dual Guard or Dual Attack, the heart icons will appear.

So as an example, an enemy archer attacks a Lord class Krom, who is Doubled with a Pegasus Knight Sumia. Krom can't attack back and Dual Guard doesn't activate. No support points are gained.

Then, another archer attacks a Strategist class MU, who is Doubled with a Cleric Liz. MU is equipped with a Thunder Tome and attacks back but Dual Guard doesn't activate. Support points are gained.

Finally, a mercenary attacks a Archer class Viole, who is doubled with a Cavalier class Soiree. Viole cannot attack back, but Dual Guard activates. Support points are gained.

Is this correct? I'd ask my roommate, but he's away in Australia right now.
