This exists? The only SMT I've seen is Digital Devil Saga, and I haven't seen all that far into it. Shit...as if I needed another reason to buy a Wii U. Man, I am seriously in severe want now and it's driving me nuts.

DDS is OK, but not really representative of main SMT. Get Nocturne, the best jRPG EVER.

Probably because my only experience with anything Atlus has done was fat weeaboos and girls who dyed their hair so much it started to fall out.

Definitely not in any position to buy a Wii U now, but we'll see. If it's a crossover with previously-established characters (which is what it seems to be at the moment), I can pass. Almost like the SSB of SRPGs.

I would be a lot more excited for this if it was more of a SMT: Persona crossover than just the regular SMT games. The regular SMT art style is so freaking weird, and I hate their stupid macabre settings/plots that involve demons and good/bad/neutral endings where even the "good" endings are stupidly depressing (Read: Strange Journey "good" ending). Persona actually averts the whole "demon" thing, and I think their concept of Personas is more thought-provoking and intuitive.

Granted, Persona 3 could be considered "macabre" as well, but there's a reason why it and Persona 4 are so much more popular than the mostly outdated SMT games. There's in-depth character development (Social Links -> Support Conversations, why aren't they banking on this???)

Like, Persona appeals more to our demographic. That's why there's two versions of Persona 3 and a movie coming out, and two versions of Persona 4, a fighting game, and an anime. Can you imagine if it was solely P3/P4 and a Fire Emblem crossover? I'd imagine that it'd sell more than this current idea ever could.

Damn, my mind just got blown this morning. And this is probably the best move that Nintendo and Atlus can make at this point. Fire Emblem has a niche audience (that has grown larger with Awakening's commercialism), and Shin Megami Tensei has a niche audience, so combining both franchises together ensures that this game is probably going to sell very, very well. We'll just see when more information arrives.

Might somebody fill me in on what kind of game Shin Megami Tensei is? I want to know why everyone's exclaiming "WHAT?!" to.

Short version: Nothing like Fire Emblem

Long version: Brutally hard and dark jRPGs where after the apocalypse you press gang demons (in the pre-Christan Greek sense) into your gang, smash them together into different demons and use them to kill your friends over ideological difference.

That's looking at it too narrow-mindedly. With SMT's LNC (Law, Neutral, Chaos), it's really not as simple as Good/Neutral/Bad. Frankly, Strange Journey's Law ending is probably the worst one there is and the closest one to being a "good" ending is the Neutral one. I'm not even going to touch the rest, because I have a huge love/hate relationship with modern Persona games, but for the main series, it's better if you don't think Law = Good and Chaos = Bad.

SMT is a more traditionally turn-based RPG series which has its roots back as far as Fire Emblem does. Things the series is famous for...

-Extremely punishing difficulty.

-Modern-day settings. The majority of SMT games are set in real-world locations (Tokyo serves as a centerpiece constantly) and more are set in you'd-believe-these-places-really-exist locations.

-Darker story themes and events, including a focus on grey morality - SMT games often feature multiple endings, but instead of things like "good end" vs "bad end", they're different philosophies that each hold their own good and bad and you're meant to really think about the repercussoins of what you fight for. Questions like, is it more important that humanity has free will, or that it is peaceful? Is submitting to a higher power a good future for humanity? Is an egalitarian society or a meritocratic society a better ideal? etc etc

-Demons. SMT's monsters - and party members! - are figures from mythology, folklore, and religion. European pixies, sabbatical demons, christian angels, japanese youkai, arabian gods - all these things are reimagined and a piece of the series' mythology.

There are no "good" endings in SMT, and that includes Strange Journey. Hell, that's the entire point - SJ's final area theme is charged not with energy, but with regret, because it's meant to make you ask if the decision you've made is really the right one. All three endings are equally correct and incorrect.

Part of the entire point of the series is to do away with classic ideals of good and evil and instead look realistically at more complicated ideas, and their repercussions. In a way, you can compare/contrast the impact of FE9 on what happens in FE10. There's only small amounts of doubt shadowed during FE9; but FE10 revealed that there were a lot of consequences for what seemed like a very black-and-white situation. SMT just does away with pretending it ever is.

Persona might be massively popular at the moment, but it's not the only branch of the SMT series, nor is it the only one Atlus has been pursuing recently - Devil Survivor 2 (SMT's SRPG spinoff series) is due to get an anime adaptation and possibly a remake on 3DS or a new entry; Soul Hackers is being rereleased on 3DS in a couple months; and the fourth officially numbered entry of the main series is making excited waves as well.

As for the social links -> supports comment: Persona 3/4 are not the only SMT games to do something like this.
