FE6 Localization Patch v1.2.1 - Full localization with new features, including Support Conversation reader

Recommended Posts

Fire Emblem - The Binding Blade Localization Patch v1.2.1

This project attempts to be as close to officially translated material as possible to hopefully create something the level of which could have seen an official release.

With this latest release, we tied up all the loose ends and added a few nice features that don't directly alter gameplay. Barring any further official localizations for FE6 content, there isn't really anything left for us to do, making this patch as complete as it's going to be right now.

Feel free to use this patch as a base for your own hacks or modifications! (Please understand I won't be able to answer questions with regards to your hacks of FE6.)

v1.2.1 Changelist

  • Corrected issue that can cause the game to crash
  • Corrected "Garret"'s name to "Garrett" as in FE Heroes
  • Adjusted one of Noah's supports with Trec to refer to Ilia as "peddling death" as in FE Heroes
  • Added missing songs to the Sound Room (this was an issue with the base game): Perilous Dance (Lalum being attacked), Within Sadness (ally death), and Arena Victory
  • (v1.2.1) Added a feature so character names in the Support Conversation reader will turn green when all of a character's support conversations have been unlocked

v1.1.3 Changelist

■New Features

  • Reread your favorite Support Conversations with a fully functional Support Conversation reader! Note that previously viewed Support Conversations will not be unlocked unless they are viewed again. The feature is available from the Extras menu (unlocked after completing the game once) and the battle preparations screen. There is a special Easter egg to view all Support Conversations once the feature is unlocked on the Extras menus...
  Hide contents

To view all Support Conversations, as soon as you press A on the "Support Conversation" option from the "Extras" menu, press and hold Up, Select and B until the support screen appears. You will have temporary access to all convos.

  • Press B to skip the credits and character endings page by page--no longer does beating the game have to mean waiting 20-30 minutes for the credits to end!
  • You can now press Start on the Preparations menu to start a battle, as in the other GBA FE titles
  • The cursor on the main menu moves a little more smoothly now
  • The people who made huge contributions to the localization are now credited in the credits screen 😊

■Fixes

  • The infamous Hugh glitch, in which Hugh's stats were inflated in his recruitment chapter if the player resumed the chapter, has been corrected!
  • File size of the patched ROM has been reduced nearly by half!
  • Missing pause marker in opening scene added to make it flow smoother
  • Other general behind-the-scenes data organization
  • (v1.1.1) Fixed "bad" ending of Ilia route not displaying properly
  • (v1.1.3) Fixed "Battleground" display on map preparations screen

■Localization/Text Updates

  • Orun corrected from Hector's "half brother" to his "cousin", and description of Saint's Staff updated to reflect that it also restores statuses of allies
  • All character names and titles have been updated for consistency with Fire Emblem Heroes and other current content (thin font used where names did not fit in UI)
  • Replaced remaining unlocalized "Ereb" map graphics with localized "Elibe" map graphics (credits, preparations minimap)
  • The Link Arena is now fully localized!
  • Other small text revisions, including an overhaul of the Tutorial for consistency with Nintendo's GBA-era terminology regulations

Original First Post (for posterity)

Spoiler

As someone who doesn't post very often (I think I posted twice like a year ago?), this is out of the blue, but I've been lurking around the forums for a while and I've seen some people mention updating the patch.

Seriously, why not? Let's do it. I don't personally know how to edit text in FE6 but I have a lot of experience doing fan translations of manga, and definitely want to help with a rewrite/polishing of the translation script. I can use Nightmare, and I know the hacking community here is pretty active, so it could probably be done, right? I've been wanting to help update or redo this patch for years.

The story of the game isn't especially amazing, but the supports of this game in particular get a lot of undeserved flak. There's some good stuff buried under the stiff English, so as sort of a proof of concept to show I'm willing to put in the time and effort, I already rewrote a couple of the supports. I won't claim to be the best writer or anything, and I know there are some limits with how much text can be displayed at a time, but I'm familiar with the pitfalls of going between Japanese and English and I feel like with others doing the actual game code type stuff, I can make the FE6 script a lot smoother. I can read Japanese too if it's ever necessary to check back at the original script.

Lance/Clarine

C Support

Clarine: Oh? And you are...?
Lance: Ah, you must be Lady Clarine, daughter of Count Reglay. I am Lance, knight of Pherae. We are honored to have someone of your stature among us. I apologize for any impudence you may have experienced from the men. The soldiers are simply a bit anxious because of this war.
Clarine: Oh... Yes, consider them forgiven. I don't often grant favors like this so easily. Consider it an honor!
Lance: Yes, I thank you, milady. Now, let me take your hand...
Clarine: My... So civil and gentlemanly! ...For a country knight, that is.
Lance: I am honored.
Clarine: O-Of course, your manners are nothing compared to our knights back home.
Lance: Please forgive my breeding, milady.

B Support

Clarine: Lance.
Lance: Lady Clarine, is there anything I can do for you?
Clarine: As the daughter of House Reglay, I order you to serve as my bodyguard from this point forward.
Lance: But...
Clarine: In truth, you are a little feeble to be my bodyguard... But I don't have many knights to choose from, so you will have to do. You must stay by my side and defend me at all times. Understood?
Lance: If Master Roy orders it, it will be done.
Clarine: But... I'm ordering it! Me!
Lance: If I may object, milady, I cannot follow your orders directly. A knight must serve his master, and only his master. One who fails in that is no longer a knight.
Clarine: I... I knew that! I was merely testing your knightly integrity!
Lance: Yes, milady. Forgive my rudeness.
Clarine: Y-Yes, well, you passed my test. Stand proud, knight!

A Support

Clarine: Lance!
Lance: Yes, Lady Clarine?
Clarine: Even if you are not mine to order... Are we not a lady and knight?
Lance: Indeed we are, milady.
Clarine: In-Indeed... As such, I hereby permit you to kiss my hand.
Lance: Yes, thank you, milady.
Clarine: Lance, I don't want you to misunderstand. The kissing of my hand is a symbol of the difference in our status. There is no more meaning to it than that!
Lance: Yes, of course, milady.
Clarine: Yes...of course... ...You're not...disappointed...?
Lance: Did you say something, milady?
Clarine: N-No! Nothing! Back to your duties, knight!

Hugh/Niime

C Support

Hugh: ......
Niime: Hm...? Who's that I see sneaking by without so much as a hello? Whoever it is, he seems to have a death wish.
Hugh: Oh! H-Hello there, Grandmother! Fancy meeting you here!
Niime: Don't give me that, boy! You've been avoiding me, haven't you? Are you shy, or just stupid?
Hugh: Well, Grandmother, you seem to be keeping in good health... Not planning on dying anytime soon, I hope?
Niime: Harumph! If I dropped dead my pathetically helpless grandson would have no one to keep him in line. So tell me. It was three years ago I sent you out to study the darkness. I hope you have a good excuse for using that putrid anima magic.
Hugh: Actually, I became a mage.
Niime: ...I must finally be going deaf. I thought I heard you say you became a mage.
Hugh: Oh sorry, I'll say it so you can hear. I! USE! ANIMA! MAGIC! NOW!!
Niime: You... You blundering failure! And you dare show your face in front of me!?
Hugh: Help! Murderer!
Niime: Foolish boy...
Hugh: Hey, where are you going, Grandma?
Niime: I always get a migraine when I talk to you. I never want to see you again.
*Niime leaves*
Hugh: ...I thought I was a dead man for sure. Either she's gotten soft with age, or she was dumbfounded at how handsome I've become. Either way, lucky me!

B Support

Niime: Hugh!
Hugh: Grandmother! ......
Niime: ...What are you doing?
Hugh: Huh? Oh, I'm just bracing myself. For when you blast me with your magic and all that.
Niime: ...You really are a fool.
Hugh: Don't say that! Come on, I'm your only grandson!
Niime: Yes, most unfortunate, that. But there's nothing to be done about it, I'm afraid. Anyway, I need something from you.
Hugh: Really? That's a surprise.
Niime: Give me back that Nosferatu tome I lent to you when I sent you out. You have no use for it now.
Hugh: Ulp...
Niime: You... do have it, don't you?
Hugh: Uh...
Niime: Hugh, those tomes are hard to fine! I sincerely hope you didn't pawn it...
Hugh: Wait! No, no, no! I didn't sell it! I gave it away!
Niime: What!? And that's any better?
Hugh: No, but listen! I met this kid who was studying dark magic, and I traveled with him for a while. The kid was an orphan, so I felt kinda bad for him, I guess. Anyway, one morning when I woke up, the kid was gone, and so was the tome!
Niime: So you didn't give it away. It was stolen by a child.
Hugh: I suppose that's one way of putting it.
Niime: That's the only way of putting it!
Hugh: ...... H-Hey, Grandmother. I'll leave if your head hurts again.
Niime: ...Yes, please do. Your departed parents would never forgive me for reducing their only son to ash.
Hugh: Y-You're right! Bye!
*Hugh leaves*
Niime: He's just like his father... He tries to be bad, but his heart is too kind. ...Why couldn't he inherit his talent for dark magic as well?

A Support

Hugh: Grandmother!
Niime: What?
Hugh: Was my old man good at dark magic? I don't really remember.
Niime: ...Why?
Hugh: Well, I really did try to study dark magic, but I couldn't seem to pick it up at all. That kid I told you about was doing great though. I thought that maybe I don't have the talent, so I switched to anima magic. But the thing is, how can I not have talent for it when I have your blood in my veins? That's why I wanna know if my old man had the talent or not.
Niime: Your father had more talent for dark magic than you could ever hope for.
Hugh: What? That makes no sense. ...Wait. I get it! Of course!
Niime: An epiphany?
Hugh: Yes! You're not really my grandmother, are you!? O-Ow! What did you do that for!?
Niime: Your stupidity. I'm your grandmother, like it or not. You would never have been born were it not for me.
Hugh: But that's impossible! This handsome face couldn't have come from those hideous wrinkles.
Niime: I was a stunning beauty when I was your age. I would court men like you and drop them once I'd milked all the money out of them.
Hugh: Ouch...
Niime: Your kindness comes from your father, and your talent for anima magic comes from your mother. Your stupidity... That's probably from your grandfather.
Hugh: What? My mom wasn't a shaman?
Niime: I was determined at first to make my son's wife a shaman. But your mother was a fine young lady with a distinct talent for anima magic, so I caved. ...I was so proud of them both... And yet they died so young...
Hugh: I'm sorry that all you have left is a pathetic failure of a grandson.
Niime: ......Don't be. How I missed yelling at you while you were gone. Perhaps misbehaving children really are the most precious after all. All I want for you is to live a long and fulfilling life, Hugh.
Hugh: ...Grandmother.

Allen/Lance

C Support

Allen: Lance! How fares your sword today?
Lance: Neither good nor bad, Allen.
Allen: ...Cool and calm as always, I see. I may have lagged behind you the other day, but not in this battle! Watch and learn from my skill, Lance!
Lance: Of course I'll watch. We all can learn from one another. Don't expect me to lower myself to your level, though.
Allen: Well, look at you! I look forward to sparring when the battle's done. I'll be off then. You'd better hurry along too.

B Support

Lance: Allen, the battles will only get more difficult from here on.
Allen: Yeah, but a challenge is just what I want.
Lance: Allen, I have something to request of you. If we lose.
Allen: If we lose?
Lance: Yes. ...If it ever looks like defeat is certain, I want you to take Master Roy and retreat. I will act as a decoy for the enemy and buy you time.
Allen: What? But what about you?
Lance: If it has to be one of us, it may as well be me. I've served House Pherae the shortest, and so...
Allen: Have you lost your mind!?
Lance: ...Allen?
Allen: If you're staying, then so will I. I won't allow you to run headfirst into certain death alone.
Lance: But you're one of a long line of knights serving House Pherae. It's better that you take Master Roy and flee...
Allen: How long you've served means nothing! Let me ask you this. Do your consider yourself any less loyal than the other knights?
Lance: ......
Allen: No answer? Then allow me. You're just as valuable as any of us! You've held to your knightly vows admirably! I know that better than any, because I've been your partner ever since you began serving House Pherae!
Lance: Allen...
Allen: Don't throw your life away, Lance. Master Roy and all of us need you.

A Support

Lance: Allen, about the other day...
Allen: You mean about if we lose? Still intending to sacrifice yourself? Or something even more ludicrous?
Lance: No, you're right. ...Your words were a slap in the face. Perhaps I was belittling myself because I've served House Pherae the shortest.
Allen: Your work is second to none. Well, second to me, but that's a given.
Lance: Where does your confidence come from? I envy you sometimes.
Allen: I'm confident simply because I know I could never lose to you.
Lance: ...I'll make you eat those words after I beat you today.
Allen: Hah, not likely! See you after the battle!
Lance: Of course.
Allen: And Lance!
Lance: Yes?
Allen: Even if we lose, you won't be left behind! Remember that!
Lance: Of course!

Shanna/Deke

C Support

Thany: Hey, Captain!
Dieck: Shanna, please. Don't call me "Captain."
Thany: Why? Back in Ilia, we always call our leader captain.
Dieck: I don't like it.
Thany: All right, um... Okay, then I'll call you Big Man, like Lott and Wade do.
Dieck: No.
Thany: Shoot, can't use that, either?
Dieck: Just call me Deke, like you always have.
Thany: No! I always feel left out when they call you Big Man and I just call you Deke.
Dieck: Don't be ridiculous. Come on, let's go.
Thany: Hey wait! Deke!

B Support

Dieck: Shanna, I see you fighting on your own a lot.
Thany: Yeah. I'm on a pegasus, as you can plainly see. I move at a different pace than the others, so it's easier to fight by myself...
Dieck: I want you to slow down to our pace from now on.
Thany: What? But I do fine on my own!
Dieck: It worries us when you go charging in like that.
Thany: But if I get stronger...
Dieck: Can you stand up to a whole army on your own?
Thany: ...Um, no.
Dieck: Then make sure you match your pace with the others and work together. It'll maximize our chance of victory.
Thany: That'll help us win, huh?
Deick: Wars aren't fought alone, you know.
Thany: Yeah...

A Support

Thany: Deke! See how I've been adjusting my pace to the others lately?
Dieck: Yeah... But don't rely on them too much, either.
Thany: Huh? That's not what you said earlier!
Dieck: What I said then applies to soldiers. What I'm saying now applies to hired swords.
Thany: To hired swords...?
Dieck: A hired sword has to fend for him or herself. No one's going to watch your back. Always question others. You should even question my orders. Question whether they serve the group or if I'm just putting you in harm's way to protect myself.
Thany: I don't think that's necessary.
Dieck: Really now.
Thany: You would never make orders like that.
Dieck: You can never be sure.
Thany: I am sure. And so are Lott and Wade. That's why we entrust our lives to you.
Dieck: ...Don't get cocky, kid.
Thany: Teehee...

Bartre/Gonzales

C Support

Bartre: So...you're Gonzales. I hear you've been quite a nuisance out west.
Gonzales: Uh...
Bartre: What do you fight for?
Gonzales: I... I want fight with everyone. But...I useless. I become strong, everyone like me. Become strong.
Bartre: I see... Very well. I'll train you. First, I want you to hit me as hard as you can.
Gonzales: Hit? I can't... You get hurt...
Bartre: Oh yeah...? Take this!
*Bartre hits Gonzales*
Gonzales: Ugh.
*Gonzales gets up*
Gonzales: Wh-Why you hit me?
Bartre: You think your puny fists can hurt ME!? Now hit me!
Gonzales: O-Okay... Raaah!
*Gonzales hits Bartre*
Bartre: Oof... Yeah...You're pretty strong. I think I'll lie down now.

B Support

Bartre: Gonzales. Are you keeping up with your training?
Gonzales: Look, look. I find this. I have money.
Bartre: So you do. What of it?
Gonzales: I become strong. I buy armor. I not get hurt.
Bartre: Oh yeah...? Take this!
*Bartre hits Gonzales*
Gonzales: Ugh.
Bartre: Offense is everything! If you beat your enemy in a single hit, he won't even have a chance to hit back! Only puny worms wear armor!
*Gonzales gets up*
Gonzales: O-Okay... I wrong. I beat enemy in one hit. I buy strong axe.
Bartre: Oh yeah...? Take this!
*Bartre hits Gonzales...again*
Gonzales: Egh.
Bartre: You think that a good weapon makes you strong? A true warrior fights with the raw strength of his muscles! Don't waste your time buying weapons! Build your muscles! Build them up so big that you can crumble walls with the swing of a rusty iron axe!
*Gonzales gets up*
Gonzales: O-Okay...

A Support

Bartre: Ah, Gonzales.
Gonzales: I...
Bartre: You needn't say anything, Gonzales. I can tell by looking in your eyes. You've become strong. You've come a long way from the little weakling you were when we first met.
Gonzales: I... I...
Bartre: I know what you're going to say, Gonzales. And you're welcome. It was my pleasure.
Gonzales: I...
Bartre: But you still have a long way to go. The path to true warriorhood is hard and neverending. Now come, Gonzales. Let us train until we're strong enough to tear down the very sky above!
Gonzales: I...

Roy/Lilina

C Support

Roy: Lilina, are you all right? Do you need anything?
Lilina: No, I'm fine.
Roy: Are you hurt?
Lilina: No, all is well.
Roy: Very well, then. If there's anything I can do for you--
Lilina: Roy, it's all right.
Roy: What?
Lilina: Thanks for worrying about me, but I'm fine.
Roy: Well, if you say so... But if you ever need anything, tell me.
Lilina: I will.

B Support

Roy: Lilina. Lilina!
Lilina: Hm? Roy?
Roy: What's the matter? You were spacing out again. This is a battlefield. You could get killed!
Lilina: I'm sorry.
Roy: What's wrong?
Lilina: It's just that... We've come so far.
Roy: Have we?
Lilina: I'm not talking about distance... It's just that everything seems to have changed quickly. Do you remember back when you came to Ostia to study?
Roy: Of course. It was two years ago... Wait, or was it three years ago?
Lilina: Our fathers were still both well. Lycia was peaceful...no one could have imagined this war. ...It was only a few years ago, yet it feels like an eternity.
Roy: Lilina...
Lilina: Oh, just listen to me... There's no going back to that time...

A Support

Lilina: Roy... I'm sorry about the other day.
Roy: The other day?
Lilina: I was reminiscing about before the war. It's all changed... I need to accept that things will never be the same...
Roy: No, some things will never change.
Lilina: Like what?
Roy: Like us. We'll always be together.
Lilina: Huh...?
Roy: We can't go back to the past, but we're the ones who will build the future. We'll make the future as good as--no, better than the past.
Lilina: Hahaha...
Roy: What?
Lilina: It's you. Talking like that. Are you trying to charm me?
Roy: W-Was it that obvious? Yeah, I guess it was a little out of character for me...
Lilina: But, really...
Roy: Hm?
Lilina: Thanks...
Roy: Lilina...
Lilina: And you're right... We'll be together forever.
Roy: ...Of course.

Of course if it still sucks and you think I'm full of crap I'll go away.

But if not, let's do this, bros.

I have a lot of free time at my job, so I'm willing to do it all myself if I can learn how. I don't know what the "hard way" is though. Editing the code directly I assume.

you basically have to find the (encoded) text data (which shouldn't be too hard in and of itself; the FEditor source oughta have it), then find the pointers to said text data

then you have to encode your own text, insert it into the ROM somewhere, then repoint it manually

changing one word took me three days

The main issue that it takes forever to enter individual letters, stoopid hex alphabet. I do have an FE6 version of the text editing suite, although none of the script is actually there and it has no addresses to use... otherwise it seems legit!

It's the official name. That's why. I'm of the belief that official names should be used when consistent and logical enough. Names are minor in the long run anyway soooo.

Will naturally be using Fae, Raigh, Narcian, and any other names we have too. ...Maybe not Rutoga, but he was just in Brawl so I'm not sure that counts.

(Also I hate "Thany" as a Romanization of "シャニー." Having taught English in Japan, I know a lot of kids and people who are bad at English mess up th, sh, and ch, so I honestly think whoever decided her spelling just messed up.)

Well, I guess all I can do is try, if no one else wants to. Does there exist any guide for this? I've searched for one before without much luck.

oh, if you have the editing suite it would actually be a lot easier... (my process involved a notepad file and i ended up encoding it by hand)

there isn't, i ended up doing it with my knowledge of how this game works (the process is really lengthy and it was long enough ago that i don't remember all my steps so don't ask me what i did) Edited by CT075

Huh? Can't you just enter alphabeticals into the editor directly? You can do that with HxD, at any rate.

Apologies for the double post, but...

Indeed, FEditor seems to work perfectly now! The timing isn't exactly ideal (I'm taking the JLPT tomorrow) but I'll get to work on this as soon as humanly possible.

EDIT: First, the matter of names. I haven't played the translation patch in a long time so I'm not sure what spellings the latest version uses, but these are the spellings I found when looking them up. If anyone cares to comment, I kind of expect some of the proposed name changes to be a little contentious, but I'm open to opinions of course. If my work turns out super unpopular all around I'm also not gonna act like I'm the only one capable of doing edits like this and you shouldn't either.

PLAYABLES

Alan -> Allen - The katakana for his name spells Allen (アレン) and it's not like there's a shortage of space unlike with NES games or something so there's no reason to have changed his name to Alan in the first place. ...Not that it's a huge deal or anything, but still.

Ellen -> Elen - Elen is the name of a legendary Welsh saint and is the original Japanese translation. The unusual spelling makes an incredibly boring character slightly less boring.

Dieck -> Deke - It's the official translation, and less hideous-looking in my opinion.

Thany -> Shanna - See above.

Ward -> Wade - There was no reason originally to change his name to Ward. It's incorrect. Ward is ウォード, not ワード

Rutger -> no change - Although he appeared as Rutoga in SSBB, I believe it was just because the translator couldn't think off the top of his head how to Romanize the name. Rutger is a fine name.

Zealot -> Jerrot - Just as valid a Romanization without the silliness of the original name.

Astol -> Astore - why would you call him asshole dear god. I don't think there's anything wrong with the Japanese official translation.

Oujay -> Ogier - Real name

Klein -> Claine - More accurate Romanization of the Kanji. It's クレイン not クライン

Ray -> Raigh - Official name

Miledy -> Miredy - Miredy appears to be a rare Hispanic first name. I can't go with Milady even though it's clearly the intention because it sounds like "My lady" and I think even Miledy is too close to that so Miredy will have to do. Don't want to change it to something like Melody.

Percival -> Perceval - Very small change and both are valid but the latter is the official spelling.

Fa -> Fae - official

Yuno -> Juno - Who the hell decided to call her Yuno?

Yodel -> Jodel - And who the hell decided to call him Yodel?

BOSSES
Damas -> no change
Rude -> Ruud - Norwegian name rather than English adjective
Slater -> no change
Erik -> no change (derp)
Dory -> no change - bandits have girly names for some reason
Wagner -> no change
Debias -> no change
Leygance -> Rheingans - It's a real name, and apparently a valid Romanization of the katakana レイガンス strangely enough. I did a Google search of the katakana and this name came up.
Henning -> no change
Scott -> no change
Nord -> no change
Oro -> Orlo - cooler name imo
Zinc -> no change
Scouran -> Scollan - It doesn't invoke the Scouring.
Morgan -> no change
Alucard -> Arcardo - Alucard? Seriously? This isn't Hellsing or Castlevania.
Flaer -> no change
Ain -> Ein - I dunno, I think it's cooler.
Gelero -> Guelero - real name
Zephiel -> no change derp
Narshen -> Narcian - official
Randy -> no change
Rose -> no change
Maggie -> no change
Ohtz -> Oates - real name
Raeth -> Laeth - real name, plus "Race" or "Lace" aren't really feasible options for a character like this
Roartz -> no change
Windam -> no change
Monke -> no change
Gel -> Kel - doesn't look like what you shave yourself with
Toril, Brakul, Kudoka, Maral, Kabul, Chan -> no change
Murdock -> no change derp
Pereth -> no change
Gale -> possibly Gaer? But maybe not. Gale is an okay name and all that but I think Gaer looks and sounds cooler and it doesn't really veer too far off.
Brenya -> possibly Brunja? It appears to be a real name. But maybe not.
Jahn -> no change
Idoun -> Idun - Name of a Norse goddess

Ward is ウォード, not ワード

ウォード is actually closer to "wood" (it isn't exactly but idk how to romanize that offhand) than ward

ワード imo is closer to "ward" than "wade", "wade" is more like ウエード

No, wood is written like ウッド

ワード is word or non-standard pronunciation of Wade (I don't know if it's a name in other European languages as well, but think of ギー for Guy). The standard pronunciation would be ウェード or ウェイド

Ward is most definitely ウォード in a standard rendering.

I think you'll have to take my word for it here when I tell you Ward is incorrect.

i can read katakana too mang, and there isn't any "standard romanizations" to really fall back on since there are multiple ways to do it (in the "guy" example it would be just as legal to romanize it as "gee" even though that's absolutely retarded)

i'm trying to read ワード aloud in a way that makes it closer to ward than wade but it really isn't sounding right to me at all

Gringe,

Just try to finish the translation update the way you think instead of asking what everyone's opinion is. Otherwise, you'll never make any progress.

Just make edits once you are finished if you really have to. If you check the other translation thread, you can see that despite the ton of posts it had, it didn't reach far at all.

Honestly, just freaking fix the awkwardly bad English first, worry about names later. Like honestly just use the names you have now when rewriting, worry about changing them later.

I'm honestly getting tired of all "let's update a translation patch because names" bandwagon. So you have at least that point NOT against you.

[spoiler=My Personal Opinions Which you can Consider or Ignore or Whatever]

Deke and Rutger: It seems weird to me that you'd discredit one of the Smash Bros. names as the translator not being able to figure out the romanization, while you take the other one as the "official translation." If you're accepting Deke, using Rutger is basically akin to using Shanna but tossing out Raigh because you just liked the original better. I think you should have a consistent policy, at least, when you're going about making changes to names. If you're using Deke, you should use Rutoga.

Wade: Yes.

Jerrot: Eh. At first I was just kinda "what the fuck." But this one actually doesn't bother me too much. It's sort of a more "radical" move, but sometimes those are necessary when dealing with translations. Just ask Xyst (Gerik), Ruthea (Lucius) and Wayu (Mia). If this reaches the status of being the official patch, though, it means I'm gonna have to rename Zealot in my game...

Miredy: It seems bizarre to me that you're wanting to change Gale to Gaer and Zealot to Jerrot, but simply don't want to use Melody. Why doesn't Melody work? It's a pretty simple tweak that changes it to a western name.

Ogier: Personally, it still feels funky. I don't really grasp how it's pronounced. It may be an actual name, but it really doesn't feel like one. An FE6 remake project is changing his name to Edgar, which I personally approve of wholeheartedly. Then again, I am the Vergil guy, so don't mind me... I'm always on the more liberal side of these translation shitstorms.

Astore: Jesus, just drop that e. I've never understood what's so hard about "Astor."

Some other people have said it, and they're right: what's really demanding some work is the script. The names aren't too terrible in general.

Of course, that's exactly what I intend to do. I was really just curious about what people might think about this.

Honestly, just freaking fix the awkwardly bad English first, worry about names later. Like honestly just use the names you have now when rewriting, worry about changing them later.

Absolutely. Names are ultimately minor, but I still think many of the English renderings of the names are pretty poor so inevitably I'll change them at some point. It's just something I could post about with relative ease and minimal work.

I think you should have a consistent policy, at least, when you're going about making changes to names.

I do have a consistent policy. Character names featured in Awakening and FE7 take absolute priority over anything, then from there it's all my opinion. I consider the official Japanese spellings as well, but some of them are rather strange, so after the Awakening and FE7 names it's pretty much free for all. I would have made the change to Deke even without SSBB to be honest. ...I wasn't joking when I said I've been wanting to do this for years. Yes, that means I've been considering stuff like this since before Brawl even came out.

Miredy: It seems bizarre to me that you're wanting to change Gale to Gaer and Zealot to Jerrot, but simply don't want to use Melody. Why doesn't Melody work? It's a pretty simple tweak that changes it to a western name.

Melody is a very inappropriate rendering of the original character name. I'm leaning towards "no" on Gaer anyway. It was just a whim I had. Jerrot is also not an unfeasible rendering of ゼロット. I could also go with Millety I guess. Actually, I like that better than Miredy.

Ogier: Personally, it still feels funky. I don't really grasp how it's pronounced. It may be an actual name, but it really doesn't feel like one.

It's French. Oh-jay, but with a French j so it's more like the soft j in bonjour than the hard j in OJ.

Astore: Jesus, just drop that e. I've never understood what's so hard about "Astor."

Astore appears to be a valid name, and most likely has different stress than Astor. ah-STORE as opposed ASS-tor.

clearly his name is waldo.

brilliant, brb, changing all instances of Ward to Waldo

No! Now you're taking away Oujay Simpson too?

Yes, because it's horrible and there was never any reason to render his name that way. Anyway, I'll refer you to this quote by me if you don't like it.

"If my work turns out super unpopular all around I'm also not gonna act like I'm the only one capable of doing edits like this and you shouldn't either." In other words, if you don't like it, it's not too hard now to edit it yourself. When the patch is done you could even just edit all instances of Ogier to Oujay if you're that adamant about it.

Anywaaay... I'll try to post a patch tomorrow with changes to the text in chapter 1. Consider it a preview.

typically you only get so many times you can "replace all" before feditor starts to break itself anyway (this is an unfixable "error" since it stems from feditor itself not the ROM)

might want to consider that when telling people to fix changes themselves ;/

I think that there are a few things for this patch with a few names needs to be changed is "Master Lord" to "Great Lord" since they used it in The Sacred Stones and Awakening named those classes and "Guinevere" to "Guinivere" since that's the official localized name that they used in FE7.

And plus, you should might change the myrmidon's name to Rutoga as a placeholder just like irtikliwT had use Seliph as Serlis in the previous FE4 patch before they had Seliph in Awakening incase if they are going to use "Rutoga" or not in the Future Fire Emblem games just like they reused Alm, Celica, Sigurd, Medeus, Altea, Hardin (same name from the Japanese version), and Mila (same name from the Japanese version and it was from Brawl also) in the recent games.

And also, I am not sure about the sword's name changed it to "Binding Blade" or leave it as "Sword of Seals", that I did seen in Super Smash Bros. Melee had a few names that weren't reused in Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem 7 like "Pharae" (Pherae, that the A was there), "Dolua" (Dolhr/Doluna, that the N wasn't available), "Akanea" (Archanea/Akaneia, that the I wasn't available), and "Guinevere" (Guinivere, since that was her same name from the Japanese version and it replaced the first E with the I in FE7). But the game title definitely needs to be as "Binding Blade" since its the localized name from the official website, Brawl, and Awakening.
