Lord of Azure Flame Final Chapter: Victory or Death

Tiria looked around her, finally starting to come out of her rage. She spotted Beau collapsed and was starting to head over towards him when the beast came out of nowhere and knocked Tas down. "NO! DAMMIT, HE DID HIS BEST TO PROTECT ME, YOU GET AWAY FROM HIM YOU MONSTER!" She flung herself at the hellhound, and skewered it straight through the throat, narrowly avoiding the claws that almost slashed her own throat. Looking at the wyvern defending the fallen rider, she raised her hands, making it clear she wasn't going to hurt him. "Hey there, it's ok. The monster's dead. I just want to help Tas, ok?" Kneeling down and hoping the wyvern wasn't about to bite her, she quickly used a vulnerary on Tas's wounds. "I've got you, don't worry. You can rest now, you've done your job."

Pain and Irritation

It wasn't difficult to figure out what was going on, or even take more than a second to figure out what was wrong, when Namid turned back. Irina just held on and kept herself low in the saddle to reduce their dragging as Namid rushed back to Tas. She couldn't get there in time to do much but keep any other enemies from getting near Tas while Tiria healed him. By that point she was dual wielding lances, hers and Tas'. She'd planned to toss it to him after using it to skewer his attacker, but after what she'd just arrived to, she doubted he would be doing anymore fighting. Even if he could, she highly doubted he would overcome the fear of doing so.

Nikita was snarling and hissing from her spot on the ground the whole time, only stopping once Irina's boots hit the rocky surface of the floating platform. She then got up and slowly approached her caretaker while minding her footing. It was painful to move around, but she could still rend anything that got too close to them.

Irina came closer to Tas and Tiria, set down both lances, and hauled the hellhound off of Tas' lower body. It was a little too close to Nikita at that point, and the wyvern quickly bit down on its neck and shook the lifeless body a few times before trying to hurl it off the platform. As the hellhound fell into the ocean of blue flames, Irina winced. "I shouldn't have left him here alone. We don't have enough people left who can still fight and there are demons everywhere."

Namid shifted on is feet fearfully. He'd closed his jaws and lost his ferocity as soon as the hairy animal had been killed. He felt better once the female threw the carcass away, too, but the mountain wyvern was deeply troubled. Tas wasn't moving. He stank of blood, and that blood was coming from his neck... Slowly, Namid walked forward a few steps until he was close enough to inspect his brother more closely. He lowered his head and lightly prodded Tas' head with his snout. No reaction. The wyvern parted his jaws and made a deep rumbling sound in his throat, trying to wake Tas up. Then, he paused again and waited. Still nothing.

The wyvern's fear and grief continued to grow. He didn't know what to do. Even if Tas was actually alive, he was in bad shape. All Namid could think to do was to raise his head and blast a loud, long, mournful roar into the air with all the strength of his species' powerful cries. A cry of deep sorrow, a cry of fear, and a cry for help.

As for Tas, his neck wounds were healing from the inside out, thanks to Tiria's vulnerary. The damage was still grisly to look at, however. The courier was largely nonresponsive, too, body completely lax. His eyes were dull and listless, but halfway open. Though he was actually alive and conscious, he was only barely so, unable to actually process what was happening around him. He may as well have been unconscious, except that his eyes, at least, were still working. That wasn't the easiest thing to tell at this juncture, however.

[[Have a shitty cop-out post because I sort of wrote my characters into a corner...]]]

Trauma taking its toll

The claustrophobia combined with her friends and family in various stages of injuries from serious to severe had simply pushed the young girl's mind as far as it was going to go. Maybe it was a temporary mental defense mechanism, or maybe it was some spiritual intervention. Either way, Tessa's manner calmed into something more serene, and yet a little atypical. Rather than as her customary focus would have her act, paying closest attention to those she'd bonded deepest with--Arrin, Morgan, Damian--she instead smoothly and calmly made a different judgement call, and went to heal another of the injured who, while certainly needing it, she wasn't even that familiar with. Perhaps a higher power was guiding her hand, or perhaps the cold, unfeeling rationality of her big sister had finally caught hold, urging her to take the action with the greatest utility. Only time would tell.

Tessa activates Arcanium, heals Iris. (13/18 if I mathed right)

Duty takes a roundabout path toward its effection

The light spirit hadn't been too responsive to her pleas, though Frederikov was thankful at least that he was not entirely dismissive. He'd made mention that tending to all the crimsons was his responsibility, and indeed her prince would be alright when his time came, but for now her efforts were better suited guarding the others, and not himself. Grudgingly taking his pointed hint, Iris pressed her lips into a frown as she followed the thief she'd heard nothing good about, and endeavored to keep her alive... at least until Isotov was back up and running.

Casting Shadows

Raphael feared the end was nearly upon them; it was the end he'd expected, but certainly not the one he'd hoped for. If the crimsons and their supporters could last just a little while longer ....

The light spirit's worries were interrupted by the sense of a stronger demon. Anticipating reinforcements, he quickly got Iso back on his feet and prepared to go intercept the threat, but to his surprise, the demon he sensed was accompanied by a human. The two of them practically ignored him as they raced out from the fiery cavernous walls and onto the battlefield of floating ruins.

"Are you certain you want to do this?" Ixion inquired, "this is a little early." The demoness picked up her pace immediately after that, as if to answer his question that way. "Hmph ... very well then ..." As Ixion reached the platform nearest the edge of the battlefield, he called out to the crimson brigade. "Keep fighting! We'll assist you!"

(OoC: This could use some more flavoring but for now it'll do I guess.)

(Reika got healed, she's at 10 HP, not 1)

Tiria winced as she took a fireball to the back. Standing up, she told Tas, "You stay here. Your wyvern will protect you. I'll return later." Wincing, she charged at the injured minotaur, stabbing him deeply through the chest. Shoving him off her blade, she limped off to the side of the field, hoping that the battle would be over soon.

The crimsons were charging in, that woman she'd defended for the light spirit just then, the prince of Tora, and her prince. Frederikov was right there with them, a shield for when then needed it. And need it they did, as they were unleashing their barrage, an angry counter retaliated back, with the familiar burning pulsing Azure flames from before. While Iris knew she couldn't channel them safely, there was really no other way to deal with them other than tanking them head-on, and that was an even greater risk of death and defeat. So, full aware of the risks, she once again invited lingering, torturous pain into her system to carry out her duties. Once again, a magic tome was completely spent and burnt in her efforts, no Elfire for her it was looking like. With Meteor down too, she wasn't in any position to mount any sort of offense at all from her on out. Not that she'd been likely to go on an attacking rampage in the first place, but the full weight of the powerlessness this situation left her in was really hitting home. The lieutenant boiled with a rage against fate that could have no outlet.

Prince Helios on the other hand, was on top of the world right now. Having thawed out from what he'd feared to have been a permanent ossification, he'd shaken himself to loosen up, then moved headlong into the fray with companions by his side. And what a fight it was! That sublime feeling one gets when executing a spell just perfectly had left him awash in a sort of euphoria, and he scarcely noticed the sacrifice that had been made to allow him to achieve his powerful attack none the worse for wear than the customary drain of tapping the depths of power that Hellsety demanded of him.

3d6 → [3,5,5] = (13)

3d6 → [4,5,4] = (13)

Iris shifts to resistance, defends Helios Helios Crimsons and AP to get sure hit on LoAF (does not Iron D, does not get doubled)

Helios:

Hit: 1 + 1 (cha) + 1 (ap) + 4 (crim) + 3 (roll) = 10 > LoAF Evade

MT: [7 - 1 (ap) + 5 (roll) - 2 (enemy res)] x 2 (crit) = 18

LoAF:

Hit: Autohit via roll

Damage: 10 + 5 - 7 = 8 damage

Barrier HP final: 23 - 18 = 5

Helios HP intermediate: 15 - 8 = 7

Iris HP final: 13 - 8 = 5 (poisoned)

The troubadour healer was still firmly in the grip of whatever cold calculating trance she had been locked into, and swiftly moved to patch up a slightly weary Helios, intent on keeping him topped up and available to finish what he had started at the soonest convenience.

Tessa heals Helios (arcanium active) + 8HP

Shatter Punch

Ixion and Miranda even came to help out; Iso hadn't been expecting that, not by a long shot ... then again, the battle would be over if even one of them died and this was the hardest battle they had ever fought. Perhaps, even for someone as cold as Ixion, it just wasn't worth the risk. Thoughts of what the world, and his own situation would be like after the battle's end began racing through his mind ... "We've got to get out of this ... alive. If we just keep hitting this thing ..." Iso took off running doing his best to slip past any demons that had their eyes on him and came up toward the edge of the field, where the massive demon lord was waiting to devour him and everyone else. "Ragh!" He packed the force of his spell into the strongest punch he could muster and smashed clean through a section of the barrier. He didn't know if his hand would ever not be sore again after an attack like that, but he could feel the damage he'd caused ... their ultimate enemy was definitely worse for wear than he was.

Keep FIGHTING

"The barrier is beginning to collapse," Raphael said, a hint of enthusiasm in his voice. He looked to Conrad, whom he had just begun healing. "All of the weapons must contribute to this barrier's destruction ... fight ... for just a little while longer, and we will be able to end this threat forever."

"I had no intention of lying down and dying," Conrad replied with something of a smirk on his face. Heaving Earthshaker over his shoulder, he added, "I merely wanted to make sure Thunderbolt was alright. He can't go any further with me, though. I have to handle the rest myself.:

"Very well."

Ixion wasn't surprised when a deathgoyle blindsided him, but he was even more surprised that Miranda quickly attacked it almost immediately afterward. "Hardly necessary," he frowned. He immediately blasted the creature into oblivion. "We'll be more effective focusing on different targets." True to his word, he immediately focused his attention on one of the mogalls that Miranda wasn't in a position to attack just yet, and blasted it with the same magic he used to kill the deathgoyle. The mogall had some magic resistance however, and just barely survived the attack. Its counter spell would have been lethal to some, but couldn't penetrate Ixion's own barrier.

The Lord of Azure Flames had given Helios a little lovetap. So the prince of Tora tapped back, harder, with a vengeance. It may have just been his pride and confidence, but he could of sworn he saw the titanic demon stagger at the hit, and the crack of the winds impact was especially satisfying. It sounded almost as if something had shattered.

Thankfully oblivious to Isotov's latest misfortune at the hands of a giant arachnid, and trusting in the implicit agreement with the light spirit to make sure he was well tended to if something dreadful were to happen to him again, Lt. Frederikov sighed a bit, winced in pain, and prepared for another push forward. There was not much she could do in the way of offense, but her support could maybe still make a difference. She and Drake could run interference, act as a distraction, and just ferrying in general perhaps?

Catching a wisp of conversation about the Elysimian General lamenting his horses injury, it seemed a reasonable thing to offer transportation. He was Crimson, after all, and needed to be brought to the fore. "You don't have to handle anything by yourself, climb on and we ride!" she called out, while coming in for a landing and extending a hand. "I'll bring you where you need to be, you just put that hellspawn down and that's more than good enough."

Conrad Smash

Not being one to turn down a free ride, especially in a situation as dire as this, Conrad accepted Iris' offer and climbed aboard. It was time to end this. "Going to have to ask you to stay back a little when I strike the barrier," Conrad warned, already beginning to pull himself into a standing position on the saddle, something Viveka was shocked at, both due to the difficulty involved and the implications. "Feel free to catch me though ... I'd rather not fall into those flames ..." he added with a nervous smirk.

The barrier came up fast and Conrad leaped for it, bringing Earthshaker to bear and strike it. "PEACE WILL COME WITH YOUR DEATH! NOT ... OUUUUURS!!!" The barrier shattered like glass under the final hit and sent a blood red light cutting through the deep azure blue that had long dominated the tomb.

"They're through the barrier," Ixion said, looking more than a little surprised. "Miranda," he glanced over. "This is it ..."

"He is vulnerable now, not just to the crimson weapons but to the light of the Goddess ... it is time to tear him down once and for all," Raphael said, beginning to focus his energies, gathering them together in front of him, giving off an intense white light.

Morgan was wounded from her injuries, lingering at the edge of the battle when the falling of the barrier gave her a surge of adrenaline. "ATTACK WITH EVERYTHING NOW!" she commanded, pouring the last of her strength into Midnight, a huge blood-red sphere hurtling towards the Lord of Azure Flame.

Chase had already drawn and fired before Morgan spoke, wasting no time once the General had dispatched the barrier, two crimson arrows seeking the demon king's head.

Reika snarled and flung the two Crimson daggers straight at the neck of the Lord. Tiria on the other hand, had been making her way, slowly, towards the Lord after her barrier had been downed and had managed to make it almost all the way. Straightening, she charged the Lord, sword drawn and swinging in a swift strike.

"So this is it... huh?" Damian noted with a light grin... he was still in immense amounts of pain after being taken down, but he was conscious, and all that was left was to finish off the Lord, right? Wearily managing to get to his feet with his twin lances as supports, the lancer began to focus, the now almost familiar glyph appearing at his feet as both holy and demonic energies swirled about him, his visage flickering between flames of cyan and crimson.

"Why don't you just die already...!" The colonel roared, as the interwoven beam of light and darkness surged from his body, racing towards the heart of the Demon King. In that instant, he already felt his strength beginning to fail...

"Heh... this... this is nothing... compared to what everyone's gone through at your hand... I won't stop... I won't... falter... not until you're dead and... gone..." Damian cursed and swore, maintaining his assault as his failing body resorted to just damning his enemy, the lancer ignoring the whooping coughs, met with the splatter of blood on the ground at his feet... this focus fire, from everybody... the Lord would fall... all Damian needed to do was make it that long... that was what he kept telling himself...

'My body... my spirit... it's not so weak as to shut down just... yet...!'

So much for being of any use in that battle. Eric would've attacked, but that would leave Charlotte open, and he had to protect her. That didn't work so well when a deathgoyle slipped his notice and impaled the princess. There wasn't any time to try and avenge that injury, since by then the last of the barriers were broken. It was now or never. The swordsman charged the Lord, swinging his blade with reckless abandon once he was close enough. It might not be a crimson weapon, but he had to try.

With the barriers fallen, Arrin saw the others begin their final assault. Not ready to give in to his injuries, he staggered forward, calling on all his reserves. A veritable miniature storm was forming around his upraised hand.

Spots were forming in his vision, and they weren't solely due to the brightness he was creating. Shouting wordlessly, Arrin threw the gathered lightning forward at the demon king.

As the last barrier fell, Helios leapt upon the chance to do some actually damage. Despite being winded and drained from the sustained assault thus far, their advantage must be pressed, and the prince wasn't the only one in somewhat dire straits. That being said, however, his mind was not occupied by noble thoughts such as 'duty' or 'honor' or 'the right thing to do'. He'd never been a very good prince, and wouldn't trust himself to be any sort of king. The only thing on his mind at the moment were selfish thoughts of destruction, pride, and vengeance. Afterward, assuming there was one, would be another story, and he'd probably have some remorse for not having been the better man about it all, though it would be a miracle if you could get him to admit it. Still, at this point, pure anger and channeled rage were just what the doctor ordered, and the Crimson Wind was happy to oblige its wielder. In conjunction with the efforts of the other Crimsons, following Morgan's rallying cry, deadly red blades of the fiercest gale shot forth, as Helios cried out the incantation to Helsety.

------------

Conrad had accepted her offer, which pleased Iris, though the same could not quite be said for his words and actions after. The sinking feeling Frederikov had gotten when Conrad stood up in the saddle, and warned about taking some distance from the barrier took an intense dive at the same moment than the Crimson Axe himself did, launching himself from their perch and hurtling toward the Lord.

'Do try to catch me', she muttered angrily before biting her lip hard enough to draw blood as she gave Drake the proper signals to perform the downright stupid aerial maneuvers that would be necessary to avoid having to explain to the Zaftran Emperor why she was responsible for an international incident concerning the death of high-ranking Elysimian officer. This had certainly not been in the job description when she'd enlisted, that's for sure.

------------

As the blood red light swiftly overtook the previous azure illumination that had enveloped the tomb, the tension left Tessa's body. Gracelessly, she slumped to the ground, mindlessly coming to rest against a small pile of rubble. Would a brief respite be enough to restore her to her senses here, would she soon be needed once more? Burning questions such as those had, for the moment, no answer in sight.

... and Death?

With no options left, and his rocky flesh being ripped away by attacks from a dozen directions, the Lord of Azure flame began to lean in on his prey, intent on taking all the crimsons and their allies into his mouth at once. In accordance with his desperate will, the platforms that held nearly everyone up above the sea of flames began to drift toward his gaping maw.

"Don't let up! Attack! Attack," Raphael called out, throwing every high powered light spell he could right into the demon king's mouth.

Miranda looked around her as the demons all began to freeze on the spot. They were lost and confused in that moment, not sure who to attack or to what end. The Lord wasn't guiding their actions anymore and they were no longer in any condition to interfere, but she knew that would change the moment he fell. She had to reach her destination before they did if anyone was going to survive this. Getting a head start on most of them, she began leaping from platform to platform, trying to get to the demonic patriarch.

"Whatever happens, you must reach his heart before they do, or we might still fail, here," Ixion told her, though she was too far away to possibly hear him.

His plan wasn't working. His body was far too massive to move quickly enough to overwhelm them. His face was being torn to shreds by morale boosted assault of the crimson and their allies, and it would be a bit longer before he could reach them proper. The only way he could possibly consume them before his head completely taken apart was to expose his core, and draw them directly into it. This was his last chance and the only viable option left to him. The Lord stopped his initial assault and rose up, his face utterly destroyed by his enemies, and took his hands to his chest. "There it is," Miranda said, her eyes seemingly permanently fixed on where his heart was. The Lord used his remaining strength to rip into, and pry open his own chest, exposing his heart, a heart that was a perfectly smooth rock hard sphere. It was surrounded by soft, molten materials and what looked like impossibly large organs. Pulling the crimson weapons and their hosts to it would, without allowing it to be shattered into fragments, was all he needed to do. It would draw them in, destroy their bodies, devour the crimson weapons, and remove his weakness forever.

It was no time at all before the rocky platforms began their journey toward his open chest, delivering the crimsons to either salvation or damnation, but now the demons understood the situation. Now they knew what they had to do. To ensure the survival of their kind and the rule of the Lord of Azure Flame, one of them would have to merge with his core before it was bombarded into dust ... and when that happened, they would become the new Lord of Azure Flame, they would carry on his will, and they would devour the crimsons as their first act. Every single demon yet alive began racing toward his heart with complete abandon, uninterested in his final struggle to absorb the crimsons, and uninterested in aiding him in that cause. Only those that were airborne had any hope of reaching the core before Miranda did, but there wasn't much time before one of the demons made contact.

"Destroy his heart," Raphael shouted. As he gave the command, he felt something tugging on him, a force, not unlike gravity. It was trying to pull him and everything else into the Lord's chest. It was the Lord, himself, reaching out to them with sheer force of will and it was somehow having a physical effect unlike anything the light spirit had ever experienced. The force was still weak, but with no foothold on anything, he was drifting toward the Lord like everything else in the area.

"No! There's not enough time for that," Ixion interjected. Suddenly he was shaken as the platform he was standing on gently collided with another. "Keep the other demons from reaching it, or we'll all die, either when they take the core or when these rocks fall and take us with them," he warned. That was what no one seemed to consider when this battle started. The Lord was controlling the entire battlefield, and the ground floor was covered in fire and hundreds of feet below them. Striking him down completely now would cost many of them their lives at the very least, all of them if the fliers and their passengers fell victim to the tomb's debris as it crumbled.

"Destroy it and victory is certain," Raphael countered firmly. He was more concerned with preventing a resurgence, which was a very real threat, but to Ixion, not something they wouldn't be able to address immediately if the crimsons survived this.

Once again Ixion had not been completely upfront with them about the situation or his intentions, Iso thought. Granted, it wouldn't have changed much given the way the demon king ambushed them. He gave them no other choice but to face him on horrendously unfavorable terms or flee and succumb to his armies a little later on. So the choice was to help Miranda reach his heart before the other demons, or destroy it. If they helped her, she might save them all when the tome came crashing down completely, but if they could destroy the heart, the threat of the Lord of Azure Flame would be gone forever, regardless of their fates. It really was a question of what they were willing to die for, wasn't it? And it wasn't easy to have to make such a choice in such a short amount of time. Iso wanted to believe in Miranda, despite what she had become, but the seeds of doubt had been planted the moment she merged with Shanice and overcoming them on such short notice was the challenge of his life. Would she still be an ally if she merged with that colossal being, or would they merely doom themselves and everyone else by going along with Ixion's final gambit?

For Irina, it wasn't much of a choice at all. Even fused with Shanice, Miranda was still out to end this threat. Perhaps she was just being naive about the whole thing, but she truly felt that the 'demon' making a mad dash toward the crumbling giant wasn't going to let this place come down on them in the end, or try to devour the crimson weapons. Taking her weapon, and the only action available to her, she tripped up one of the passing centaurs, causing it to stumble and miss its most critical jump. While she toppled over due to the demon's momentum, the centaur itself flailed uselessly as it fell off the rocky platform and down into the fiery depths below. Irina quickly picked herself up, using her lance for support. "I'm going to try and stop the demons. That's what I choose to do, at least," she declared, mostly to herself.

"Morgan ... I'll be honest with you," Lev said as the situation became grimly clear. He grabbed the hand she was using to steady herself in the saddle. He could see daylight above them, but there was still plenty of tomb left to come down and he wasn't sure he could reach Irina, in time. "... I want us to get out of this alive. Hearing you agree to something as silly as helping me with mercenary work pretty much made my year ... but things just got real shaky and I'm not sure what we should do, here. Miranda's about to ... about to change the shape of this war, if not outright end it, and I have no idea what that means for us ...."

"The heart or the demons ... was that Ixion's plan? To replace the Lord with a more agreeable demon rather than destroy him outright?" Conrad was mulling over the choice as well, though not with nearly as much worry on his face as Isotov or Levski. He came prepared to die, a painful, agonizing death at that, but he hadn't come prepared to place his faith in a demon. He glanced up at Viveka, who was still flying over there area. She'd likely heard what was going on, as she was looking right back at him, trying to read him, wondering what he was leaning toward doing. (Will Miranda be as strong as this incarnation of the Lord if we help her? Will any of the demons be as strong as he was if they reach that thing? I doubt it ... but the stakes could never be higher. We would need time to recover for another fight and I don't know if we'll be granted that time ...) "Iris? Thoughts?" There wasn't much time, but with Viveka so far away, the Zaftran bodyguard was really the only one he could seek any timely input from. All the while the demons were rushing past the battle worn allies in droves as the Lord's body and the battlefield itself drew ever closer to each other.
