The Official Reclassing Paths Thread

Okay. So recently someone posted a thread asking which class path should they take with a particular character. And after posting in that thread, I realized something: that's actually pretty important, because I've played this game so many times now and that trips ME up as well.

So this thread is here for any questions or suggestions related to how and when you should promote/reclass characters and in what order.

Just one rule though: before we start launching into the complex world of second gen, let's sort out as much of the first as we can, okay? Also, I have the Spotpass Six listed, but they're really kind of optional unless we get a hold of some experts in those fields... same with the Anna section, since they can only marry the Avatar and that's the only time most would bother messing around with reclassing for them.

Excellent! I'll add a few myself to get started.

Your support Chrom could also end as a Paladin. Here are some others that I would use:

Vaike: Fighter 20 >> Hero 20 > Dread Fighter 30 > Berserker 16+ > [optional: Warrior 20+]

Stahl: Cavalier 10 > Dread Fighter 16 > Myrmidon 10+ >> Swordmaster 16+ > Great Knight 16+ > Paladin 20+

Lon'qu: Myrmidon 10 > Dread Fighter 16 > Wyvern Rider 10+ >> Griffon Rider 16+ > Swordmaster 20+

Donnel: Villager 10 > Dread Fighter 16 > Mercenary 10+ >> Hero 20+

True. I picked Bow Knight as the final class due to Bowfaire, but yeah, Paladin's a good option.

Ooh. May I ask why you chose 16 levels of Dread Fighter for... all of them? :D

And numbers! I'll add those to mine.

I imagine for RES+10 and Aggressor. Though, I'm not sure about how feasible beating CoY2 early on is.

Exactly, and lv16 instead of 15 because the extra level doesn't count against your internal level when you reclass, so it's marginally more XP efficient.

You could probably have Avatar solo it. My list is geared for endgame, so the paths are really more appropriately used for characters you are trying to power grind.

Good point. Alright, I'm adding all four of those and going in to edit mine with numbers. :D

Lovely. Made sure to give credit where credit is due.

I also added a support build for Stahl so he can have Swordfaire, Bowfaire, and Dual Guard+.

I wouldn't be contributing very well to this thread anyway, considering how I absolutely refused to do it until I did my Lunatic and Lunatic+ files. And the Lunatic+ one had grinding.

Original class only, final destination, right?

These paths are all too long. You can realistically go through 2 promoted classes without grinding, sometimes 3 if you don't reclass unpromoted.

(I assume you're talking in game, since postgame you can just go loleverything you need).

Oh, damn, good point.

... Should I make both in-game and then most optimal post-game paths, then?

Here's mine for Panne.

Taguel 10> Wyvern Rider 10> Wyvern Lord 15> Griffon Rider.

If grinding: Taguel 30> Wyvern Lord 15> Trickster 10> Griffon Rider. This makes her really dodgy, which is all I can think for her.

Kellam (Tanky grind build): Knight 10> General 15> War Monk 15> Great Knight ( can swap General for Great knight in the chain, if you want General to be the final class)

Virion (sage build): Archer 10> Mage>10> Dread Fighter 16> Sage.

Virion (Bow user build): Archer 10> Dread Fighter 16> Sniper 15> Bow Knight.

That's all I got. It's probably terrible.

I don't see the point of post-game paths. You can literally grind out anything that you want, especially first generation. Screw up more than Mr. Magoo, and still your character will be fine even on Lunatic.

Builds noted, 1%, thank you! :)

I have literally never used Virion as a Sage, I'll have to try that...

So, just best in-game paths then? Okay.

In game paths also depend a lot on your team and pairings you want to make. Like using a small team you could easily go three or four promoted classes on one person, but use a large team, and you're probably going to only use one second seal each. It might be worth bearing that in mind when making paths.

Right. This is... a lot of variables to cover.

Alright. Well, first thing first: let's try to pin down some of the more "difficult" ones, as in the ones that have skill sets that are harder to work with or would require a lot of reclassing to make them feasible units. We'll work with those paths first.

Anyone in mind?

For Maribelle, a good path (in my opinion) is to go Troubadour (10) > Mage (10) > Sage 15 > Dark Flier (15) > Valkyrie.

It gives her Demoiselle, Magic +2, Tomefaire, Dual Support+ and Galeforce.

It lets her play both an offensive role, and as support also. Of course you might not want to give Maribelle so many seals, so you could cut out Mage or Dark Flier. You could use Resistance +2 instead of Magic+2 if you're cutting out Mage, and you could bring out Focus instead of Galeforce if she's not going through Dark Flier.

I did want to chip in and say, here's a paths I've used for Chrom before, on Lunatic. It's something of a medium length path for an all-purpose Chrom.

1) Lord (20) > Great Lord (5) > Cavalier (X) > Great Knight (opt. > Paladin) [X - when stats are capping, or level 10, whichever comes sooner]

This path has a few advantages. Firstly you second seal a little later than the standard level 20, increasing the chance you'll have a Second Seal available. It also only takes one Second Seal. SSing at level 5 promoted is a surprisingly good route - your internal level won't be a big issue (cumulative level of 12), and then you get some very quick levels unpromoted while still not being capped. Conveniently, most of Chrom's stats will cap on average around hitting level 10 or so as a Cav, meaning you can promote up more or less as soon as you hit them. From there, GK will level slower, but you have a pretty decent skill set already as well as good stats.

Skills wise, you get a good selection. DS+ and DG+ (if you reach DG+) are great skills for a support, and he can also have Outdoor Fighter to shore up his hitrate, Charm for a decent boost to many allies from the back, and Discipline to get to those good weapons more quickly. At the front, Luna and Aether make for a decent chance of dealing extra damage - depending on skill stat of course, but somewhere from about 40%-47% chance of activating one (65-73% chance of activating one while doubling), which coupled with DS+ gives Chrom tremendous offence. As before, Discipline brings up those weapon levels, Charm for the all around bonuses, and Outdoor Fighter for a little extra survival are all also useful options.

The setup does have a few downsides. It means you'll be unpromoted for quite a while, which can hurt in the midgame. You also spend a Master Seal to just get one skill, which some people may dislike. It's also rather unspecialised - with a mix of skills useless at the back, and some which are only really good at the back. But for a general purpose Chrom, I think it does well.

Variant: As mentioned above, you might want to go Paladin at the end, perhaps if Chrom hits level 20, or if you just prefer the classes stats. You might also want to go to level 15 as a Great Lord to get Rightful King. Personally I think this isn't worth it - RfK isn't a very impressive skill, and you more or less have to skip Cav after doing so, massively lowering you EXP gain and hence stats in the long term (you can still go Cav, but expect your STR/SKL/SPD/LUK to be capped very quickly, and possibly DEF/HP around level 10 as well). However, once you grab Luna, you will have a better total proc rate than if you hadn't done so - likely around 55% compared to ~48% if you didn't have RfK (the second number is high because you would expect to have much higher skill due to more levels)

This is a pretty cool idea; I hadn't thought of SS'ing at the first promoted level five before. That will definitely take some of the SS pressure off the good reclassers, and an extra 3 cumulative levels isn't a death sentence if your second promotion is your target end class.

That's actually a really cool idea, I've never thought of that. Thank you so much Tables! :)

I wonder if we can't pull a path like that on someone else... hmm.

Oh. You know what? Gregor.

If you go... Mercenary > Hero (5) > Myrmidon (10) > Swordmaster (20+), he can still get Vantage in a decent time-limit AND have Sol. ... Is that alright, in your opinion?

I actually had Gregor in mind specifically; I've been trying to think of a way to get Sol on him (to pass down) without locking him into Hero endgame, and this would be one such way. He has a couple of good options here, including what you posted as well as Myrm -> Assassin and Barbarian -> Zerker/Warrior.

Not too impressed with Vantage in story unless it's for a second gen.

True, since he can't really pair it with anything to maximize its potential.

Maybe switching the myrmidon line for barbarian > berserker so he can maximize his raw damage potential and still be able to heal himself? Plus, in case you DO have room for another second seal you could send him back to Hero with Axefaire in tow.

Nice. [/nods]

Wait a second, I have an idea for support!Cherche. Now, um, does anyone know exactly how breaker skills work? As in are they only affective on the front unit or do they also have an effect if it's on the back unit?
