implying everyone sucked in FE6

And the main problem for archers is low-manning being the most effective strategy, especially with FE13 Pair Up.

They fluctuate from game to game.

Usually the harder the enemies are, the worse 1-2 range weapons are and the more common flyers are, the more you want bows for chipping. Case in point, FE6 and FE12 H3 seem to fit the bill quite nicely.

Meanwhile FE9 has easy enemies, forgeable Hand Axes with good base stats and not many flyers until Daein. And the potential Snipers both have issues too.

Why do all the archers suck now? This isn't like FE6 where everyone sucked. There is no excuse.

Name a good archer in Blazing Blade, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn besides Shinon, the DS FEs without reclassing, etc.

They're pretty bad. Not useless garbage, but bad.

As has been said before, the problem with archers is that IS seems to somehow think that bowlock is a good thing which must be counterbalanced by things like awful stats. When you look at cases where they actually have good stats, they're good.

Except they aren't very good even if you play for ranks.

They're not "better than many other units," but they can be used to beat the game

What a roundabout way of saying "Name a good archer from those games without naming characters that make good archers/sniper".

But yeah, on paper the ability to attack an enemy without being counter-attacked so that your direct-attack units can do so without fear of a counter sounds great on paper but the crap bases for the base class and their main purpose resulting in the lower of the 2 common EXP gains (~11 by attack, ~30 by kill) doesn't help. Poor poor archers.

Main reason why archers are so awful is you don't have reason to give they exp, when you have magicians around. Just compare archers to magic users. Archers can only shoot some wyverns when mages can kill anyone (and in games with wind magic they are even better against filers), heal and warp. Even without 1-2 range they would be much, much better.

If they made it so shortbows had a range of 1-2, or introduced a 'bladed bow' with that range, it would make archers really useful... just a thought.

I used the archers in fe7, because they were good, and both have pretty good availability. FE6... well, Wolt... Klein on HM. Just don't like dorothy and Igrene. And Neimi is just so bad compared to every other character in that game... Gordins ok, and i always make cord a hunter, which seems to work well.

I speak as a series newcomer, but in Awakening, even on Normal mode, there's little reason to use Virion at all, when mages have 1-2 range, are just as frail (Miriel notwithstanding, she's even frailer), can hit fliers for good damage with Wind magic, and can hit the defensive stat which is usually lower save for PKs (resistance). Archers do great damage against PKs, but PKs have high mobility and therefore strategic advantages against archers, so the archer advantage is cancelled out.

On the other hand, the ability to not counterattack on enemy phase is actually useful for Luna+, because of Counter. I don't know if that makes Virion himself any good, but it makes bow-users at least have a niche use not shared by any other weapon type.

Yeah but Luna+ is not supposed to be a balanced difficulty. It's a niche use that 99% of the game demographic won't take advantage of.
