For some reason I thought it would be a brilliant idea to do a 3 heart challenge on this fantastic game. Then I got another brilliant idea that was doing said challenge on hero mode, where everything does four times damage. So, anything that normally does half a heart of damage will two shot me, and anything that normally deals a heart of damage OHKOS. Since I don't have any fancy streaming things, doing a playlog is the only way I can share this painful experience and maybe help others who are playing this game on just about any difficulty. And to top it off I added the restriction of getting every item in each dungeon because I still need to satisfy my completionist side. Anyone is welcome to suggest any other restrictions I should do (within reason, please)

Rules
1) No grabbing any heart containers or pieces of heart
2) No bottled fairies, hearts, or red/blue potions
3) Get every item in every dungeon unless this conflicts with 1
4) StreetPass battles are allowed for money making purposes, but I cannot reset if I lose
After Sanctuary Dungeon

Comments: Really easy introductory dungeon, though I almost die at least once because I'm always an idiot when I start a new file on anything. I'm also glad I remembered to pull the left switch in the last room because I really didn't want to deal with a room full of snakes.
Plan: After all the other intro crap, buy a shield and make a beeline for the Eastern Palace

...actually, I suppose that battle tower thingie will be even more fun. Doing 50 floors in a row without getting hit at all is rather tough. :newyears:

Fortunately I have a plan to tackle that thing which is basically spamming great spin, the tornado rod, and purple potions

After Eastern Palace

Comments: The shield makes one or two rooms of the dungeon really easy, and the only other possibly difficult room is the one with the butt ton of rolling balls. All in all, a short, easy dungeon. The bow makes dealing with some enemies so much easier and I will probably be spamming the hell out of it
Boss: Yuga
Really really easy battle, he didn't even get to attack once since his pattern is so predictable that I shot him with an arrow right when he came out of the wall each time
Plan: Rent the tornado rod and bombs, get the net from the bee guy, buy a bottle, get the bottle under the bridge, visit mother maimai and do all the other stuff needed to get to the House of Gales including nabbing the pegasus boots

Good luck... you will definitely need it.. I played through the Heromode with 5 hearts and the usage of fairys and it was a real pain. I'm curious how you are going to beat the boss of the Palace of Darkness though since i never managed it to dodge his attacks when he went berserk.

Since you didn't mention it in Rule 2 i guess you are going to use milk? :Kappa:

Okay to be honest milk won't help all too much because a lot of things OHKO later on, but I won't use milk either. That boss is actually what worries me the second most on this run, so I just plan on getting the LV3 Master Sword before fighting him and cheesing him with purple potions after his stupid berserk thing is over. Fortunately the Blue Mail will let me survive a hit from him.

After House of Gales

Comments: First blood goes to a random bat. I thought it was going to be some random Lorulean enemy that just one shots me because I'm being stupid, but this slippery bastard manages to not get hit by any of my sword swipes and hits me twice. This further proves the Law of Video Games that states that the most dangerous enemies will always be the bats. The dungeon is full of small enemies and is generally less forgiving than the Eastern Palace.
Boss: Margomill
Thank god falling in pits still only takes away half a heart or I would be really frustrated at this boss. Not too bad if you don't try to bumrush him like I always do, but this run's existence means that I don't do things the easy way
Plan: Rage at being killed by a random bat, rent the bow and hammer, and head for the Tower of Hera and probably die a lot to boulders due to them being the first thing to OHKO in the game

Comments: Holy smokes I am surprised that I didn't even die once on this hellish trek. This was the stretch of the overworld that I was most concerned about and it definitely scared me more than once. The rolling boulders in the caves OHKO link so you have to really be careful while traversing the caves and the randomly falling boulders from the volcano two shot link so it was a very stressful time, especially since I can't just go rambo with bottled fairies in this run like I always do in Zelda games.


Plan: I'm not sure exactly how many hits Moldorm will take or if purple potions even work on bosses but I hope two is enough to take him down because I think he OHKOs and is a generally random boss that I would rather not deal with normally

After Tower of Hera

Comments: Spamming the tornado rod in this dungeon makes dealing with the mini-moldorms and the stalfos that throw bones at you a lot easier to deal with. Fortunately the room full of stalfos don't do anything until you get near them so I was able to stun them and kill them one by one so I didn't run the risk of getting hit by stray bones. Despite how short the Tower of Hera is, it is one of my favorite dungeons ever just because of the nature of the puzzles and needing to go outside of the dungeon.


Boss: Moldorm

This guy went down after a spin attack and two purple potions. I don't know if the purple potions alone would have done it but I really didn't want to run the risk of trying to hit him while he's going really fast


Plan: Maybe stock up on purple potions for Hyrule Castle but otherwise get the Master Sword and make a beeline for Hyrule Castle. I might rent the bow or boomerang to make a few rooms in the castle easier

After Hyrule Castle

Comments: So I forgot that Ravio did the half off for the first purchase you make so I bought the fire rod at half off because it's useful when upgraded and it's one of the most expensive items from him so I figured I should get it. The thing that makes Hyrule Castle somewhat hard is that when an enemy is on stairs on a floor above you, its almost impossible to hit them with your sword, leading to a few stupid deaths. Fortunately, the fire rod circumvents this. Also, a nice thing is that the doors that you opened will stay open if you die in the dungeon, so you can just run through the dungeon if you've cleared a good portion of the rooms. The pegasus boots allow you to dash through a surprising amount of rooms with ease.


Boss: Yuga

Since I don't know how to tell the real one from the fakes, my strat for this guy is to follow one of the paintings of him and just swing the sword repeatedly when he comes out, usually killing the guard that spawns when you attack a clone or hitting him. This also prevents this clone from attacking, meaning minimal dodging is required. He did kill me once, but that was a hilarious death where he did the attack that makes fire pillars come out of the wall right before I beat him, so the cutscene afterwards played and he ran off into the next room, so I follow him. Straight into a pillar of fire that just spawned. And died. It's a good thing the game remembered that I beat him so I didn't have to do it again but I still had to go through the dungeon a fourth time.


Plan: Now here's where the planning gets interesting. Due to the nature of this game, the only dungeon that really needs to be cleared to access the others is the Thieves' Hideout so you can get the sand rod. After that, I can go in and out of dungeons as I please, which I will be doing. I plan on dipping into the Swamp Palace first to get the Blue Mail so a few enemies no longer OHKO, then I will go to the Skull Woods and the Dark Palace to get the Master Ores inside them, get the LV2 Master Sword, then clear the Thieves' Hideout while getting the Master Ore and get the Titan's Mitt to get the Master Ore in the Lorule Sanctuary. After this, I will get the LV3 Master Sword and proceed to complete each dungeon, probably leading to something akin to a boss rush. I also plan on finding every maimai and upgrading and buying every item so I can get the great spin, so I will be doing an assload of minigames to make some sweet cash.

Good luck with your 3-heart Hero Mode challenge. I was going to do this myself at some point. I wouldn't ban fairies/potions though, since there are so few recoverable hearts to begin with. Also, the Nice Tornado Rod and the Great Spin make a killer combo for most of the Tower of Treachery.

You can tell the real Yuga by the blue Flames surrounding his rod. Nonetheless it is quite difficult to hit him, since the time window isn't that big, even if you know the real one..

If you are planning just to collect the Items and leave then, i guess clearing at least the Swamp Palace and Skull Woods while you are still there wouldn't be so difficult, since both of them are fairly easy and the bosses there are pretty much jokes.

Are you going to Turtle Rock before the Ice Ruins? I guess the Hylian shield would be useful against the stupid Wizzrobes and I don't think that the Stamina scroll will be so important that you need to get it early.

I guess it's just me but i found the Fire Rod relatively useless... i hit myself more than the enemies :facepalm:

Also good luck in escorting that stupid big bomb to the swamp palace.. using the upgraded bow helped me a lot to get that stupid thing there without dying.

You figured it out already, but using the Tornado Rod, and especially the upgraded one, will make your life easier, since it's similar to the spin attack, but without charging and the wonderful effect that you are also hitting flying enemies. (stupid shooting and flying mushrooms, i hate you!)

After Thieves' Hideout

Comments: As my screwing around in Lorule shows, everything one shots link before getting the blue mail. Now that I have the blue mail, only most of the things in Lorule one shot me. Got the master ores from Skull Woods, Dark Palace and Thieves' Hideout but I only cleared the Thieves' Hideout because I'm curious as to how fast I can clear the bosses with the LV3 master sword, and this is the only boss that is in the way of the LV3 master sword. Good thing the Thieves' Hideout is ridiculously easy and has generally low enemy density with the only threatening looking guys charging at link's sword all day.
Boss: Stalblind
One death to this guy due to being dumb and standing next to him constantly. Turns out that the nice fire rod is quite effective against him in his shield-less phase since he's big and gets hit so many times by it, not to mention that you can attack him from a range with little risk of getting smacked yourself. One thing to note is falling of the ledge is a nice way to dodge attacks since half a heart < two hearts of damage.
Plan: Buy/upgrade the sand rod, get the Titan's Mitts from the Desert Palace, get the last master ore, get the LV3 master sword and all the maimais, get great spin, then kill the bosses in the dungeons I partially completed.

After Dungeon Cleanup

Comments: The LV3 master sword made the bosses even easier to deal with this time around, I only had one death to any of the bosses. The other 8 deaths... well let's just say enemies do a lot more damage in general than I thought they did, leading to some silly deaths like running into a hinox. I also made a bunch of money just running around and finding the maimais, so I don't have to grind on minigames, which would've been hard in the first place since the good ones have pieces of heart as a reward and I can't get those. I found a golden bee randomly so now I have the bee badge, not that it really helps since I catch any bee I find and sell it to the bee guy anyway. As far as dungeons go, the Desert Palace gave me a surprising amount of trouble; I think I might have died 4 times in there, though deaths seem to matter less the more you accumulate. The other dungeons were pretty easy, especially since great spin with the LV3 master sword one shots every normal enemy in dungeons while also killing those stupid bari that like to do the electrocuting thing at the specific time I swing my sword at them.


Boss: Arrghus

This guy is a complete joke though he can OHKO with the eye lasers but they are really really easy to dodge by just running around so they don't pose a threat. I just stayed near him and mashed the sword button in his second phase until he shot the eye lasers, after which I repeated the staying next to him business. If I really wanted to cheese this guy, I could have just spammed purple potions. During the second phase, he doesn't have a gimmick that prevents this like a lot of other bosses do.


Boss: Knuckle Master

I actually have a pretty hard time against this guy in general but at least he doesn't OHKO and there are four hearts on the wall IIRC so I was allowed two extra fuck-ups, which I definitely needed. The best way I found to dodge him slamming himself on the floor is to run towards the side of the hand that the thumb isn't on. He is one resilient mofo and actually took a while to bring down relative to the other bosses.


Boss: Zaganaga okay really, who names these guys

IMO the easiest boss in this game, because at least Yuga in the Eastern Palace might mix you up or something and actually requires timing. All I had to do is keep up with him, which is really easy due to the massive range of the sand rod and the fact that the nice sand rod pillars don't go away. Once I'm next to him, all I have to do is keep swinging the sword, maybe changing direction once or twice to kill the things he sends out. His beam thing that he charges up only did a heart of damage when I was next to him, so I didn't even have to worry about dodging that thing.


Boss: Gemesaur King

This is the guy that killed me once, and for good reason; without a game plan, this guy will cause a lot of frustration. Fortunately, I had this nifty fire rod which allowed me to light the torches in the two corners while staying in the relative safety of the middle of the room while he just kept circling around the room. Lighting the torches this way does require really quick aiming because you have to be almost constantly moving up and down in the center of the room to dodge this guy's rampage, but at least it's better than running up to the torches only for the boss to smack you in the face for trying. Otherwise he is really frail, going down in two bombs then two great spins/purple potions.


Plan: Complete the Ice Ruins then Turtle Rock because I feel that the stamina scroll will be marginally more useful than the Hylian Shield, especially because I have a bad habit of not using my shield at all lategame

After Ice Ruins + Turtle Rock

Comments: I kinda didn't save my txt document that I used to record/tally my deaths so I'm going from memory here so it'll probably be wrong. Anyway, things in these dungeons like to OHKO more than things in other dungeons, accounting for a decent portion of my deaths. These are the dungeons that I would consider to be the hardest, so it's a good thing that they really don't have anything important so I can do them last. One thing to note is that the flaming statues in Turtle Rock can be damaged with a purple potion, which makes the room with four of them really easy. Great spin might also work there, but I didn't want to test it since they OHKO link if they are hit with the sword
Boss: Dharkstare
I had to be really careful while fighting this guy, since everything he has OHKOs link. When I was able to hit him with the fire rod, I just mashed the button while dodging if the triangle things would have hit me. I think that the nice fire rod is almost required for this boss to not be ridiculous, but I haven't tried it with the regular fire rod so I can't be too sure.
Boss: Grinexx
Holy moly this guy was a pain until I learned how to properly fight him. His bite attack which is difficult to dodge if you happen to be swinging your sword just happens to OHKO, leaving almost no room for error if you go that method. However, his second phase goes down in three great spins/purple potions with the LV3 master sword, meaning that you can cheese him from a safe distance. Doing this also allowed me to easily dodge his explosion attack too since I was already a good distance away from him.
Plan: Stock up on purple potions and go to Lorule Castle

After Lorule Castle (woo beat the game \o/)

Comments: Lorule Castle is a nice place where all of the new enemies OHKO with the blue mail on. With the red mail, very few things in the game OHKO, but it's gotten at the very last stretch of the game. Oh well, at least it makes Yuganon's second phase a little easier. The ball and chain soldiers are easy to take care of with the tornado rod or purple potions and the Moldorm rematch goes down in two purple potions, making that fight way easier than it should be since he OHKOs even with the red mail IIRC. The other rematches really aren't worth mentioning since they picked the easiest enemies to fight again.
Boss: Yuganon Phase 1
When I started this playthrough, Yuganon's second phase was the thing that scared me most, but nothing could prepare me for this monstrosity. Everything, and I mean everything this guy has OHKOs even with the red mail on and his charged spear thrust seems to randomly decide to actually hit link every now and again, meaning that that attempt is over. Attacks that he doesn't charge up can be blocked, but the thrust might hit twice, so I died once or twice due to not holding down the shield button long enough. A general rule of thumb I found is to stay on the side that he isn't holding the trident on so I could hit him more often. The best way I found to dodge his charged thrust is to just run away from him and towards the side he isn't holding the trident on, though that worked like 70% of the time. After he starts blinking red, the magic balls that drop from above can easily be dodged by running and changing directions every time a new one appears. Yuganon liked to spam those on my last attempt, but at least that time he also did nothing but uncharged attacks, making it an easy attempt.
Boss: Yuganon Phase 2
It's kind of amazing how absorbing the triforce of wisdom made this guy go from being a monster to being a scrub. Standard tennis boss with a seemingly hard to dodge attack every time you succeed the tennis game. This attack is shooting a bunch of flaming bats from the wall that I basically can't dodge 100% of the time. However, unlike the previous fight, the walls aren't blocked off, meaning that link can merge into it and dodge these bats, as long as he isn't standing on the spot where the bats fly out of. Due to these bats flying out of the same spot every time, link can just stand in the same spot in the wall and be completely immune to this attack as long as he has the stamina scroll, making this boss go from nightmare to joke.

Plan: I'm not done with this game just yet; the Treacherous Tower awaits. But first, I need to restock on purple potions. Good thing the second room in Lorule Castle with all the skulls is a good room to grind for materials in.

49: 3 lynels. knock them off as soon as you can with the bow/sword, this is probably the most dangerous room and i have no concrete strategy for it. these ones like to shoot fireballs so slashing one off the edge while moving forwards makes them miss quite a lot

And with that, I'm done with the three heart hero mode challenge, which is something that I found more enjoyable than I should have. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to read this thread and thanks to those of you who commented so that I actually know that some people have seen this.

Congratz for finishing this, i don't know if i had the patience to do the Tower in such a challenge. Seems like the purple potions are quite useful after all, i always thought of them to be useless and not worth to get them at all. Also it seems that the great spin attack was your best friend in this, i guess the tower would be nearly impossible without it in this challenge.

Congratz for finishing this, i don't know if i had the patience to do the Tower in such a challenge. Seems like the purple potions are quite useful after all, i always thought of them to be useless and not worth to get them at all. Also it seems that the great spin attack was your best friend in this, i guess the tower would be nearly impossible without it in this challenge.

You have no idea how pissed I was when I got to the 50th floor and had half a heart left and only one purple potion. Needless to say it was impossible to kill Moldorm without getting knocked off the platform and it took a long time to get to that point in the first place. Purple potions are basically a great spin which covers a massive area (which happens to cover every possible room in the tower) and is unblockable, meaning that almost everything in the game is killed by a single purple potion after the LV3 master sword barring bosses and hinoxes/lynels. They aren't really needed or honestly that helpful in general in the maingame except for making both mandatory Moldorm fights a billion times easier since they automatically hit the weak spot. In all honesty, yellow potions would have been better for almost all the bosses but I kinda set a soft restriction on those just to see if it was possible to beat the game without them.

And yes, great spin is broken as all hell, especially when combined with the tornado rod
