This is a good a place as any. I've been dabbling in production recently and this shit is so... overwhelming. pls give pointers

with regards to what? there's so much there... What in particular are you struggling with? And which program(s) are you using?

Edit: Having said that, I'd recommend starting with small, acoustic pieces, due to them generally being simpler, letting you grasp the basic concepts of recording and mixing without to much to worry about.

This is probably a really dumb+uninformed opinion and definitely an unsolicited one, especially when (so I gather) it's so crucial or even synonymous to making music, but when people talk about a song's production quality (which I usually just hear expressed in terms like "good/bad production"), I have a hard time not just tuning them out. I've heard different people call a single song good/bad in it (again, using no more than the term "__ production"), and occasionally I've heard stuff like "good song, but bad production." I'm sorry but Fool What.

It might just be something I'm less familiar with, like if somebody says "bad perspective" about a painting/drawing/etc I can get that, and I can see how different people could say l the same thing has "bad/good anatomy," (though sometimes I can get irked by comments like that too anyway.) but god, "__ production," especially left at that, just says so much nothing to me it sticks in my craw.

There are also times where it just seems totally irrelevant/inconsequential/beside the point etc to me to talk about a thing by judging its production quality. Like, I heard that some guy criticized, of all things, "good kid, m.A.A.D. City" for its production (and of course leaving it at "bad production" (and implicitly "bad album)), and I'm just like

Pls remove urself and stay removed

(Not to try to dump on stoly's request for tips or disrespect actual song production or anything, sorry)

Dude's missing out. I remember listening to the song "m.A.A.d city" on repeat for an entire day, it was a solid day.

My sentiment. The only (only!) examples of "good song, but bad production" I can think of are maaaybe some of the Loudness War albums, but those have been picked apart to death already by people who know way more about this stuff than I do, sooooo...

...more from that Kendrick guy. He's pretty good.

nas suffers from shitty production a lot. he's an amazing mc, but he's got a horrible ear for beats. it's brought a lot of his projects down. production is integral to a song. there is a reason the legendary producers are even legendary.

truth about nas. i like some beats, like from 'the message,' 'ether,' and 'ny state of mind' to name some of his bigger songs. but off of god's son and life is good, lyrically pretty good imo, the beats are 'eh.'

the opposite of the spectrum is kanye west. i've listened to him more, because i thought i was being unfair in my dislike of him, and i was right, sort of. he's like exactly the opposite. usually amazing beats with typically shoddy lyrics. perfect background music.

Music threads are awesome because it will never come out without at least one argument over what defines a genre.

I'll try and filter out the obvious horseshit I listen to and just post stuff that's actually quality:

- Brazil

These guys are considered prog rock. Argue with it if you want, but these guys have a similar sound to atdi/tmv (especially since the lead seems like he's trying his best to channel Bixler).

- Puscifer

I don't really know or care what Maynard's angle is with this side project, all I know is some of the shit these guys put out is fantastic. And more readily available. Seriously, try finding Tool on a streaming/download service easily.

Either way, all of their other songs could blow ass and this would make em worth a listen.

- Dagga

Back when dubstep wasn't in every pop song, commercial, being bastardized by everyone with a computer, kids like Dagga were bastardizing the name of music with their computers. One of those wonderful drug-like experiments in fucking serious drops is Hide in the Woods.

- Sparta

The day At the Drive-In broke up was a sad day for me. Fortunately this bore wonderful fruit in the form of the two bands that came from this break up: The Mars Volta and Sparta. Since Sparta is a bit lesser known, I figured I'd link one of their absolute best tracks:

- Pendulum

You name the style and they'll do it. Better. I freaking love this guys so much.

- Rusty K

I am not even sure I've heard anything else by this guy, but this track proves you don't need to rage out and go nuts and break subs and whatever the latest youtube comments are for all the dubstep. This song is just beautiful.

- Rise Against

These guys really put out some quality music. Seriously. I actually dig the lyrics on a lot of their songs, too, which is pretty rare for me.

- 10 Years

I have the biggest mancrush on the lead singer's voice and dreads. These guys rock. Heavy on the back end with a gorgeous voice to give it contrast.

- Chevelle

I just can't post 10 Years without posting Chevelle. One of my favorite bands of all time based on sheer consistency, these guys can't seem to put out a bad album if they tried.

- Royce Da 5'9"

IMO one of the best rappers out there in the studio. But it's been a while since I went through a find-awesome-rappers phase.

- Xzibit

Before this dude heard you liked yo-yo's and put a yo-yo in your yo-yo so you could yo-yo while you yo-yo'd he could fucking spit.

This remix is 100% fucking killer, but xzibit's verses are just absolute nuts. Just...shit, listen, it's genius.

- Blue Scholars

Now that Mackelmore made a splash these guys will start getting some love. They're awesome.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oB78dvtNKs

- Thursday

These guys pretty much helped define what screamo is. Then they got good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh7qmeQZuos

Shit is visceral. Every crescendo, every note, every breathe in this song feels deliberate and evokes a very specific emotion. In my top 10 favorite songs of all time. You can be the judge, though, hehe.

ok ok i could do this for hours imma stop now.

CD - Spaceship, Through the Wire, Last Call
LR - GONE, Hey Mama, Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix)

Grad - Can't Tell Me Nothing, Flashing Lights, Champion
808s - Street Lights, Paranoid, RoboCop
MBDTF - Devil in a New Dress, Runaway, Dark Fantasy
Yeezus - New Slaves, Hold My Liquor, I Am a God

-------

That Brazil song sounds like a cut from "In/Casino/Out." I remember listening to that album way back when, so this song is like a time machine.

Yeah, his voice is just a wee bit more shrill than Bixler's, I think, though.

^Fun band, fun "adult contemporary progressive death polka metal" album.

My next-favorite BTBAM song after "White Walls" is probably "Backwards Marathon."

"Adult Contemporary Progressive Death Polka Country Metal" Album.

While The Parallax(I, & II. It's one big song, but "Silent Flight Parliament" is my favorite; Lunar Wilderness is amazing too)is by far my favorite, White Walls will always be special in my mind(probably because it's arguably their best song). "Backwards Marathon" is pretty great too.
