i can't stop laughing at the last line. it's enough to convince me that it's some sort of automatically generated message which doesn't take into account what you're actually posting, working under the assumption that most of the time someone posts their own videos in succession like this it's for profit purposes, and the mods actually wouldn't have any objection at all to your continuing to post the videos. seriously, what else but a bot would legitimately try to suggest you buy reddit ad space for a single playthrough of a video game?

It is automated. Meaning that any sort of disciplinary response to his posts could also be automated.

Considering how huge the site is I wouldn't be surprised if they had checks like this.

I think that in addition to your reviews for each character about how useful they are in 0% growths, a quick blurb on their uses in a normal playthrough with growths would also be useful, or at least consistent with how in-detail you're going into the uses of weapons and game mechanics. All of that seems geared towards a very beginning FE player, but such a player would probably enjoy non-0% growths reviews more.

Other than that, keep up the work! I haven't actually listened to the videos yet, but I will tonight.

I feel he has explained the general consensus of the characters with growths very well. But then I'm already familiar with the series so I guess an extra sentence or two for a beginner would help.

you guys are free to speculate over how good the characters are normally. there are a few reasons why i don't do it in the video. the first is that there's simply not enough time. there are 4 monster chapters (7, 8, 11, 16) and everything else is relatively short. the second is that i think players should explore the characters on their own and not just take my word as the final authority. the third is that i haven't LTC'd FE6 with growths, so much of what i would say would be guesswork.

no. HM bonuses always fall within a range (7/8 to 9/8 of expected value, then rounded down and up, respectively). i think the game throws out outlier autolevels. so the best fir would still be slightly worse than base rutger in the important stats - they tie str and she wins in, like, luk and res.

there's also the fact that she's at L1.

@Don: lol at the reddit bit. Plus, if you have time I think it would be great to hear any information regarding AI. This to me is probably the greatest tidbit to learn about. Back in chapter 8x there is an archer and mage surrounded by trap tiles near the boss which never move. At least, from what I recall the AI never moves those two units. However, I do not recall you talking about being able to abuse this simple AI characteristic at all.

From playing FE7, I recall the AI doing some really wacky things. Anywhere from what is there priority levels, to how do they decide what to target.

the thing about explaining AI is that it's very difficult to do coherently in audio commentary. stuff like targeting priority requires arithmetic, which is hard to talk through because it's easy to lose the listener. i cover strange AI behavior a little bit in chapter 24.

the other problem is that i'm not entirely confident in my observations of AI behavior to give a correct explanation. most of my info in chapter 24 came from research that gryz did when hacking the game. another example would be that i think there's an AI type that starts moving if a unit walks within an enemy's 2-turn movement + attack range, but i can only hypothesize this from observations and don't know if that's actually how the AI type works.

There is an AI type that does exactly this in fe7 and 8; it's most likely in fe6 too. Which enemies have you seen this behaviour from?

Yeah, dondon is describing AI2 0x06. It gets used quite a bit in FE6...

Lalum belongs to a class of units that allow an adjacent unit to take another action during his turn. The selected unit can effectively move about twice as far, or attack twice as often, etc.

As you can imagine, this is a crucial skill to take advantage of if my goal is to minimize turncounts. Lalum will be dancing someone almost every turn for the rest of the game.

There’s not much spectacular about Klain, but he has an offensive presence that Shin lacks, due a higher base str and a higher base bow rank. He’s unmounted and a tad slow, though.

Echidna is not quite as good as she looks on paper, but she is adept at killing specific enemy types by virtue of her high base spd and decent base weapon ranks.

Physic is one of 2 staves in FE6 that can restore HP to distant targets, and it is the only one that is commonly usable. Physic grants staffers the flexibility to heal targets from safe distances and to cover multiple parts of the map without having to be moved around.

All physical weapons have a tier of brave weapons. These are high-ranked weapons with middling MT, high WT, and variable hit. The special characteristic of brave weapons is that they allow their user to attack twice for every attack that he would normally perform.

The doubled attack happens immediately after the first attack. Units who would normally double an opponent can quadruple the same opponent with a brave weapon. Brave weapons are also the only weapons that can attack walls twice.

The Brave Axe is much too heavy and inaccurate to be very useful. Its main purpose is to quickly break down a wall, and… that’s about it. There aren’t any good users of the Brave Axe in FE6.

Just curious, would Tate's partners haev gotten in your way had you had Thany talk to her?

probably not, because there were no more enemies around except for the boss. but they also might have fucked up and blocked tate off or flew somewhere weird that i couldn't get to with klein.

The Wyrmslayer is a weapon that does effective damage against wyverns and manaketes. It happens to be the only weapon with this property that is not S rank. Manaketes in particular have so much def that it would be difficult to scratch them with any other physical weapon.

An Elixir restores all HP for the unit using it. A 3-use Elixir can be sold for 1500G, so I try to avoid using Elixirs unless absolutely necessary.

Manaketes

Rutger squares off against a manakete boss. He wouldn’t do damage without the Wyrmslayer.

Manaketes are canonically a race of dragons who can take human form. They are a common thread throughout the FE series, with appearances in all but FE2, 4, 5, 9, and 10 (FE9 and 10 have dragons who can take human form, but they are not called manaketes).

Manaketes are the only units capable of using items called dragonstones. Dragonstones typically confer massive stat bonuses to the wielder, on top of having impressive offensive stats. All enemy manaketes in FE6 use the same kind of dragonstone, the Firestone.

Manaketes are fearsome opponents, but they have an exploitable weakness to the Wyrmslayer and the Divine Weapons (which will be covered much later).

Status staves

An RPG, it seems, is not quite an RPG without the element of adverse status. In FE, status is incredibly debilitating, though it is fortunately not that common. FE6 features 4 adverse status effects, 3 of which can be inflicted with a corresponding staff.

A sleeping unit cannot move or perform actions. When attacked, sleeping units do not counterattack. FE6 does not incur stat penalties for sleeping units, which rather unintuitively means that units are perfectly able to dodge attacks in their sleep.

A silenced unit cannot use magic. Silenced units are unable to use staves or attack or counterattack with tomes. They are also unable to use the talk and support commands, which is an amusing but inconsequential quirk.

Berserk is the most debilitating status when inflicted on a player unit. A berserked unit cannot be controlled by the player - all berserked units make their move at the end of their respective phase, and are controlled by the AI. Additionally, they will attack any unit of either ally or enemy affiliation. If a berserked unit attacks an allied unit, the allied unit will initiate a counterattack if it is capable of performing one. Berserked units will never use staves or other items.

Berserked player units cannot be interacted with normally, i.e., they cannot be rescued, traded with, spoken to, have their rescuees taken, etc.

Resolving status

All status afflictions have an initial counter of value 5 that decreases by 1 after each turn. Once the counter hits 0, the status is resolved on its own. The only other way to resolve status is to use a staff that instantly cures a target unit of his status affliction.

Staff accuracy

Status staves require a hit check to determine success or failure. The hit rate is determined through the following equation:

Staff hit = 30 + 6 * (user’s mag - target’s res) + user’s skl - distance

The user’s mag and target’s res dominate in the equation for staff hit. Therefore, it is important to have a high mag stat when using a status staff on an enemy, and to have a high res stat (either innately or via Barrier) on units who must dodge enemy status staves.

Jodel (an offscreen player unit) targets an enemy druid with a Berserk staff. The enemy druid has 17 res to Jodel’s 21 mag and 18 skl, and Jodel is casting at distance 15, so Jodel has 57 hit.

In contrast to combat accuracy, status staves do not average 2 RNs for the hit check - they only use 1 RN.
