The Dead King's Lament Strategies

Hello everyone! If you haven't gotten to Paralogue 18 this will have spoilers for that, just a heads up!

I've played through Awakening twice now on Normal/Casual and very few recruitable characters ever give me trouble as much as Gangrel (not including Paralogue 17 good lord). So I've thought about it, and would like to know, what do you guys do for that chapter to recruit him? I'll share what I usually do, but I'm almost positive there is a better way to go about it.

My strategy is to make sure that I at least have two flying units. Frederick is a Wyvern Lord with A support for Chrom who is a Great Lord. I pair those two together and put them in the mountains right until Gangrel comes close enough to them, which ends up happening at the bottleneck of the two mountainsides. I'll fly out and switch to a weaponless Chrom and talk to Gangrel.

Meanwhile, my other flying unit (it doesn't really matter who it is, my first time playing through was Grand Master Female Avatar and Falcon Knight Cordelia) will pair up with the Avatar and make their way to the village. My other units, besides Lissa and Libra, would go and clean up the spawn area but avoid going near the bottleneck just in case they pull Gangrel to them. Lissa (Sage) and Libra (Sage) were on standby in case anyone needed healing.

With the village taken care of and the spawn area clear, I just wait on Chrom to finish talking to Gangrel for two more turns, meaning Chrom is weaponless during that time. On Normal difficulty that isn't a problem, but I think this plan would fail on Hard and up. Needless to say, Chrom finally gets Gangrel to join. Since I'm Casual scum, I just send Gangrel off to fight everyone by himself, but when I play on Classic I planned on just having Lissa or Libra to rescue him so he doesn't get killed by his former comrades.

After that, everyone charges in and cleans up the map. It doesn't seem too hard of a map, it's just Gangrel makes it difficult if you really want to recruit him. Like I've said, I know my strategy isn't that great, so I'm curious on what others on Serenes Forest have tried.

I haven't done the spotpass Paralogues for quite a while, but can't you just fly Chrom x FK Sumia in, switch, talk with Chrom, switch, kill something with Sumia, GF, switch, talk again, switch, Rescue Olivia, Dance Sumia, switch again, talk again and then Rescue all three out all in one turn?

If that's possible that would be absolutely awesome.

Just did it yesterday on my avatarxchrom solo lunatic playthrough... There are no counter units in the map.

Clear the initial enemy units and proceed to choke the point witht he fort in the middle of the map. Grangrel should move last so he won't rush to you unless no other melee units are alive. This requires galeforce at least to slowly clear draco knights and unequip on enemy phase... once there are no more draco knights recruit gangrel and let him get to the other side of the map while avatar clears th lolngbow archers in the end.

Chrom can switch to unarmed avatar after speaking with gangrel each time. You should have no problem tanking with nosferatu and toncs, you know normal stuff.

I just cleared the lower half with a sword user by dodging the axes and killing the other units just like, by rescue bombing or standing back and baiting. I was somewhat conservative so I just did Chrom talk -> Rescue, Chrom talk next turn, Rescue again, Dance Chrom, talk, have Chrom sit on Gangrel and retreat to seperate right afterwards. I did that on Hard mode easily, so you shouldn't have a problem doing it on NM Casual.

It sounds like main concensus is using a bit of Galeforce or Olivia/Rescue Chrom. I never really thought of that, I was too preoccupied with stat bonuses.

That...has never occurred to me. Thinking about it, my biggest problem was probably throwing in Frederick as Chrom's ferryman. I'm definitely gonna try this the next time I open this one up though, cause that's amazing if it actually works.

Either I'm remembering wrong or it's because I used a full team, but Gangrel would always start going after my guys right out of the gate. That was one of my problems before I settled on the plan I developed. So as long as I don't kill all the melee fighters, he should hang back?

Just to clarify, when you mean rescue bombing, you mean you'd send a unit out to fight further away from your main party then once they were done you just rescued them back over? Rescue spamming Chrom out of the death trap I usually send him in is a pretty good idea, I never did it so I'll try that next time.

My best advice is to have Olivia hide behind a strong unit, assuming she doesn't have Galeforce

I was thinking of maybe having her run over with Chrom once the enemy units have thinned a bit. If she doesn't have galeforce then she'll just come with unequipped. At that point she should be strong enough to take a few hits if Gangrel or others decide to fight her. If she does have galeforce though, I'll have her get a smack in before dancing for Chrom.
Thanks for the responses guys, it helps a lot to see different perspectives on how to recruit him!

Enemy aggro behavior changes based on difficulty mode. Don't count on it working the same way in every scenario.

Gangrel also has only ranged weapons, so he won't suicide on a 1-range Chrom if you do want to take an EP.
