Well, this is a strategy franchise. I figured a somewhat more complex system will allow for greater diversity of scenarios that would be able to occur during gameplay. That way the player will need to put more thought into the pre battle preparations, allowing them to really stretch their inner Sun Tzu tactical genius.

And besides, the topic of discussion is the franchise's (tome based) magic. Even if all tomes ever do is shoot a blast of their element in a certain direction this is still magic we are talking about. Magic in Fire Emblem has typically been presented as the type the able are to study if they really want to get good at it. And what kind of fantasy setting with a study based magic system in place has a simple structure to the system? If it is complex enough to study then shouldn't it come across as such?

That is my take on this subject, anyway.
