  1. 1. Does it bother you?

F/SN has far bigger problems with it's plot and characters than stupid ero scenes...But even disregarding that, it's a false equivilance, because Fates level of fanservice is a lot closer to nukige tier as opposed to eroge tier. People don't have much vested interest in the h-scenes for typical eroge (which is why all ages versions get released, and many plot heavy eroge simply dont bother with the ero in this era anymore), wheras for this game the amount of effort put into these assets is an order of magnitude higher, to the point where it is an active draw for some players. Who decides to read Kara no Shoujo for the porn? It's simply not comparable. Whilst it may not be as explict, it's far easier to point to Rance or something instead of F/SN as a comparison.

I think Cross Channel might be the only exception to the rule but that's because Romeo is a fucking wizard, and there's a degree of self awareness because of the loops.

You cannot have a geninue story if the characters within that story lack basic human qualities and agency. Fanservice of this nature reduces those aspects, because it becomes blatantly apparent that all the characters exist for the player. Their ultimate role and purpose is to satisfy aesthetic preferences, and everything else is secondary. Obviously, many fictional works (especially games) do this to a degree, but much of the immersive qualities of any form of media exist in spite of that, not because of it. Awakening was also fairly obvious about it, with much of it's premise being to make sure that "there's something for everyone!" when it comes to character personalities, but Fates is going to new lows in this regard.

As BrightBow has so eloquently put it before, these characters are pretty much just "pets" or "playthings" for the player to enjoy as they please. They find the ones they think are funny, cute, sexy, or whatever, endearing in various manners, and then one sidedly get to do with them as they like, even going so far as groping them for reactions, and this extends to pretty much the whole playable cast. And the most frustrating part is that you're rigged to succeed in this respect, since the game is full of blatant hero worship. Characters love and respect the player and his or her Avatar because that's the main thing they exist to do.This is not wrong on principle, because these characters are just data, and they don't have rights or sentience. But it makes it very difficult, if not impossible for many people, to take to heart their concerns and actions as human beings, fictional or not. Say what you will about the general quality of writing earlier in the series, but whilst it was far from being peak literature, we were moving steadily towards characters each having their own identity and purposes, their own stories and themes. Gag characters existed, but were in a tiny minority of a large cast.

I came to admire and respect characters in earlier titles beacuse of their attitudes to life, their personalities, and their actions within the context of the narrative. I don't feel drawn towards these exaggerated caricatures that are so easily summed up in an image and description that people already know who they want to fuck and fondle before they even play the damn game, because they don't come off as humans. There is no room within a game for both subservient hero worship/pandering and believable characters with agency. And I'm not sorry that I want to experience media that strives for the latter.

I'm more in agreement with this. While indeed there is nothing wrong with lighthearted moment in a serious situation, I would hardly call the Amie part and other excessive fanservice. Lighthearted moment that add something into the characters, show how they are like human being, is like a stern character try to make a joke in a very grim situation, or how supposedly cruel and ruthless person loves animal and feed them every morning before the war. Rubbing their face is not. While skinship isn't bad on its own, they implement it pretty poorly in this game. This is why I don't have any objection with support conversation because they could opened up for those lighthearted moment providing the writer have the skills, but greatly irked when seeing amie feature (though I still laughed due to how absolutely stupid it is).

I have no problem with the fan service. If anything, I kinda like it. I hope they don't gut it when it comes over here.

I'm bothered with how the presentation of the fanservice affect the unit cloth design like Camilla. Awakening have stupid design like Nowi but she is a side character and never featured in cutscene. It is more bothersome to me since Camilla exerts an aura of real authority which is real shame due to how I can't take her seriously because of her clothes. Things like incest or underage marriage (please, just please don't use pedophile since that is one hell of a strong word) while I don't agree with them personally, those never really bothers me as long as it is not shoved into my face and not the central thing in the game. But the prospect of the gameplay side like map design, more tinkered difficulty, balanced pair up and stat growth really offsets those fanservice aspect that I hardly think of them at the moment.

I think that this is really well put. I don't mind silly looking characters like Camilla and pieri being in the game, but I dislike having one as a main character. To me it has a lot less to do with sex and a lot more with it being impossible for me to take a character like that seriously. If one of the main characters was wearing a green spandex full body suit and was present and involved in serious plot related dialogue it would ruin my immersion, and that's how I feel about Camilla's silly attire and cutscene. This is all explained by the fact that a lot of FE players are virgins. A lot of people who love fanservice are horny virgins, and I think just about all the people whining about the fanservice are prudes.

I'm a prudish virgin. Now what?

Rubbing is optional

Bad optional content is still bad content. Ignoring it won't make it go away. Ignoring bad parts of a game doesn't make the game good, otherwise every single game ever is a 10/10.

It also doesn't help that developers spent time and money on something that isn't Fire Emblem in a Fire Emblem game.

@ the topic: I'm not usually bothered by fanservice in video games, but it has no place in FE, IMO. At least not to this extent because I know there has been fanservicey characters before in the older games. But this is just otaku pandering.

Supports/marriage/children I enjoyed. It made me more invested in the characters.

The skinship stuff though, is unnecessary even if it is optional. :/

You voted for yes on the poll, as expected. Nothing else.

I think Japanese people are much more open to fanservice because sexuality is much more accepted there.

If these were to be censored anywhere it would be the U.S.Because of the stereotype that violence-why nat but sex, oh god sex someone burn the witch, she brought up sex!

However us Europeans don't give a shit cause we open to all this.(Well there is Russia which is the exception).

My apologies for being crude but I wanted to voice my opinion.

But yeah, I could care less about the amount of fanservice. As long as I can enjoy looking at my favourite units in underwear and not have to look up fan art, I will be happy.

I've come to accept that FE as a series has fundamentally changed and that these fanservice-y features are (most likely) here to stay due to popularity. I'm not gonna gripe at other people who enjoy it. I can do without face-rubbing little sisters and putting bikinis on people but they don't necessarily bother me. I don't mind the lewd/raunchy face-rubbing lines as they're with your spouse and you're essentially grouping them all over while alone in the bedroom, lol. That's some foreplay.

Although I do have to wonder if any of these features will stay for the Western release.

..Camilla's and Charlotte's armour design is pretty stupid, tho. >.>

Check, check, and. . .ugh. If the lower screen allowed me to do things like poke people in the forehead for giggles, and have them get irritated with me, then sure. However, I'm not interested in doing any more with these characters other than get supports, and a kid, and move on with life. I can argue why the face-rubbing would stay in the US version, though.

Can we stop talking about a fanservice that is optional?

Because IT'S NOT.

gif reference, and it's just and example: https://gfycat.com/PerfectShoddyDegus

Wowzorz. Thats kind of amazing. The only reason i do not have issues with the fanservice in this game, is because of how inclusive it is. The fanservice is here to everyone to enjoy, not just one single demographic. The devs have made it clear they want their growing demographic of FE fans (and a lot of these are women) playing this game. This game has more equal opportunity fanservice than even fe13. Im ok with this. This is the kind of fanservice that i find acceptable and preferred. If this game's fanservice was designed only for male gaze/male demographic, id be rather annoyed. (just as if a game like this was only designed for female gaze/female demographic, it would be annoying cuz obviously this game should appeal to everyone of all genders.)

I also think that the devs had player choices in mind for the game. like, S supporting siblings? Up to you. Having kids? Up to you. In FE13, i drew the line in the sand with romancing second gen characters. Ill draw the line in the sand regarding some of the sibling characters in this game. (Elise is totally never going to be romanced and neither is Sakura omg) Im certainly in no position to judge what another person does with their video game(s), so why do people see fit to be so hateful about it? I may never understand. Im a very sex positive person, so seeing some butt doesnt bother me. I welcome it.

Rubbing features have been a staple in a lot of Ecchi games and to find it in a game serious about war is obviously going to be a bit of a shock to some. I watch lots of British Sitcoms that have blatantly sexual themes, but though are more satirical than 'I put it in there because sex sells'. I'm totally fine with same sex relationship, incest what not. But the thing is too many times in fanservicy Japanese media (and western) do we see these themes sexualised and characters objectified as a result.

There's a correlation between shitting character writing and heavy amount of fanservice for a reason. If you are to tell interesting stories with characters that reflect different personalities in life or if you are tackling taboo showing character's in a risqué view is hardly going to sit right with your purpose. In anime we can compare the likes of Koi Kaze and Aoi Hana (which has pretty much zero fanservice) to other shows that is landened with fanservice especially when there is gay or incest relationships involved.

As for clothing, Camilla's armour looks silly not because she's showing skin but because it's just one more added to the mountain of silly looking female armour that looks less cool but more 'cooling' than their male counter-parts.

FE: fates is interesting because it seems to try to separate the fan service. Whereas I'd rather IS tackle sexuality as an issue head on instead of going down the typical 'fanservice as a side feature' route. Being sexy has too long been seen as objectification and the way we change that perception is by showing it in a different context (take this video that tackles stereotypes about pole dancing or ESPN body issues). Fan service didn't use to bother me so much in games or anime till I found things that dealt with sexual themes much better; then it just made all the fanservicy stuff look lazy and tacked on.

In a game series that stands out on character development I won't be surprised why the tacked on fanservice features (it quite literally clones the same mechanics as other ecchi games) will make people go 'Huh'? Even if they're not sure of why in the beginning.

I don't know, how exactly is it inclusive? It's not like you are forced to stare at Marx's shirtless self, though I suppose I shouldn't speak before I know. I mean it's nice if you think it's consistent but I'm struggling exactly to see how it is.

Well, i think its due to my understanding of what fanservice for a female demographic entails. Would it shock you if i told you that female geared fanservice isnt really shirtless dudes all the time? Like, when you look at what kinds of characters and things that are really popular with a female demographic, you'll notice its different from just overt skin showing and stuff like male fanservice. Joker's outfit and position as the subservient butler with the pretty cravat and long pretty hair is very much fanservice for a female player. Its also why i think hes feKamui exclusive. Harold/Arthur's bumbling hero bit with his adorable grin, that charms female players. Zero with his BDSM overtones, Tsubaki and his very pretty appearance and smile, seeing these guys in the bath together hanging out, Flannel's adorable werewolf angle, Nishiki being playful, its all fanservice to appeal to female players. Just like Charlotte's outfit and Camillia's scene there is for the boys. This stuff between genders is often approached slightly differently. Being able to rub the faces of the blokes you can S support is also a part of it. On top of the less sexual fanservice, like Odin's existence, the hair accessory thing, and My Castle with feeding Lilith and what not. (oh and thats not going into Marth and Ike's new portraits and outrealm shenanigans)

I think it can be challenging to see what really suckers female players in (otome elements and pretty boys with great backstories) and what suckers in male audiences when male audiences are the ones that have been catered to for so long. Or from a male viewpoint.

The continuing premise that you have to be prudish to be against fan-service is monumentally baffling to me. At least, it's weird that "fan-service" seems to be thrown around like it's synonymous with "sexual themes," when I almost can't disagree more. Bikini girls and face-rubbing isn't sex, nor is it coming anywhere close to being a proper take on the subject. If you look at the content itself, we're in Little Mermaid territory here.

But, I guess words like "prude" and "virgin" are only being thrown around as a net for dismissing people outright, so I shouldn't expect there to be much thought behind them. Come on, folks. You can disagree with one another without resorting to high school tactics.

I like to try to look at this topic from multiple angles so I would say, yes and no. I say no because I've been exposed to enough games with fanservice that I kind of learn to just ignore it especially if it's something that can be avoided in some way but it might not be that easy for other people to ignore. And this is where I say yes because even though I can ignore it to some degree, it still nags at me for the fact that these options exist in the first place. It's so easy to just say, "Well, just ignore it." when it really isn't for some people.

I know lots of people who liked the support/relationship building that you can do in Awakening and I myself enjoyed it too, but I feel like they went a bit too far with the whole face touching/chest touching and seeing your units in just their underclothes. But that's just me. Some people might like those features so more power to them.

It's just kind of unfortunate by how these features are watering down or covering up just how extensive the plot of the games seem to be based on the reactions I've seen. At least, that's how I see it.

For someone like me, fanservice would be Kamui adopting a cat, and letting me pet the cat instead of members of my army. I don't want to treat my soldiers as pets!
