  1. 1. Does it bother you?

For someone like me, fanservice would be Kamui adopting a cat, and letting me pet the cat instead of members of my army. I don't want to treat my soldiers as pets!

You dont have to treat your soldiers as pets. Hell, do you even have to lay down the piece of My Castle that houses this feature?

Why is it so unacceptable to desire a narrative that takes itself at least somewhat seriously? There's a profound difference between well handled sexual themes that feel appropriate within the context of the setting and blatant fanservice that conflicts with the themes of the game. There's a time, place and an audience for everything and fanservice to this large of an extent would be better off somewhere else.

None of these fanservice themes are necessary and aside from the zoom-in on Camilla when she is walking, none of those features are a part of the narrative. A bad mini-game and cringe-worthy dialogue hentai-like dialogue in said mini-game doesn't detract from the narrative.

Also, only the facerubbing and dialogue are inappropriate in context of the story. Being able to make units wear bikini's and being able to leer at them is something found in multiple RPGs but for some reason people act like it's so offensive here. Relaxing in Hot Springs to relax makes perfect sense as well. Did they include it just to be able to show skin? More than likely, but it doesn't change the fact that it's realistic way to relax and hangout between battles.

You cannot have a geninue story if the characters within that story lack basic human qualities and agency. Fanservice of this nature reduces those aspects, because it becomes blatantly apparent that all the characters exist for the player. Their ultimate role and purpose is to satisfy aesthetic preferences, and everything else is secondary. Obviously, many fictional works (especially games) do this to a degree, but much of the immersive qualities of any form of media exist in spite of that, not because of it. Awakening was also fairly obvious about it, with much of it's premise being to make sure that "there's something for everyone!" when it comes to character personalities, but Fates is going to new lows in this regard.

As BrightBow has so eloquently put it before, these characters are pretty much just "pets" or "playthings" for the player to enjoy as they please. They find the ones they think are funny, cute, sexy, or whatever, endearing in various manners, and then one sidedly get to do with them as they like, even going so far as groping them for reactions, and this extends to pretty much the whole playable cast. And the most frustrating part is that you're rigged to succeed in this respect, since the game is full of blatant hero worship. Characters love and respect the player and his or her Avatar because that's the main thing they exist to do.This is not wrong on principle, because these characters are just data, and they don't have rights or sentience. But it makes it very difficult, if not impossible for many people, to take to heart their concerns and actions as human beings, fictional or not. Say what you will about the general quality of writing earlier in the series, but whilst it was far from being peak literature, we were moving steadily towards characters each having their own identity and purposes, their own stories and themes. Gag characters existed, but were in a tiny minority of a large cast.

I came to admire and respect characters in earlier titles beacuse of their attitudes to life, their personalities, and their actions within the context of the narrative. I don't feel drawn towards these exaggerated caricatures that are so easily summed up in an image and description that people already know who they want to fuck and fondle before they even play the damn game, because they don't come off as humans. There is no room within a game for both subservient hero worship/pandering and believable characters with agency. And I'm not sorry that I want to experience media that strives for the latter.

I think that facerubbing demeans them as a whole, but it doesn't make me look at each individual character as less than human since it applies to the whole cast. If, for example, Camilla's telling some touching, deep story about why she seems to adore you more than anyone else, it won't be less touching just because I have the ability to rub her and make her say unnatural or creepy dialogue.

I also disagree that having an exaggerated trait or habit prevents them from having individual purposes, motivations, backstories or themes. It's not as if past FE games had such complex characters that you couldn't summarize many of the past characters easily with an image and a bio. I won't deny the characters of FE13 (I've tried to avoid extra info on FE14's cast) personalities and behaviors are made to be more exaggerated compared to average characters, but I think to call all of them exaggerated caricatures is letting your personal dislike of their prominent traits or habits cloud your judgment (using the royal "you", not you specifically).

IIRC, you can also change your appearance in your room. . .which I will most definitely do! My foggy memory says that petting a, well, pet is also supposed to relieve stress or something, which is why I'd be perfectly happy if I could have a regular house cat or something for that purpose.

LOL. TBH, I could see them using an extremely bright glare to cover her up, although I hope they don't censor this. It's no worse than how Sharla looked in Xenoblade Chronicles for her base outfit.

Well Lillith seems like the team pet for My Castle. But yeah honestly, i can see being somewhat annoyed by the Amie feature. I just think its a bit much to judge people if they are kinda excited for it. Because i intend to use it for my romantic support partners, not just everybody.

Agreed. No one complained much over the fanservice in that game. Remember Dunban's skill tree option to get super agility bonuses when fighting in the smallclothes? Yeah. That was Dunban exclusive unless you linked it.

Brilliant!

That did remind me a great deal of a comically censored porn edit which can be found on youtube HERE (probably NSFW, I mean it is censored but... yeah just in case probably NSFW)

Wrt Xenoblade-Fates fanservice analogy, keep in mind that the question laid out here is 'does the amount of fanservice bother you?'. I sincerely doubt the amount of yes-votes would be nearly as high if this was a topic about any implementations of fanservice in general. The hot springs or dress-up portions aren't exactly the issues here.

^Yeah, it's likely most people who voted yes (including me) isn't actually bothered by fanservice itself, but rather they're bothered by fanservice in FE. Nobody complained about Xenoblade's fanservice because it was a new IP (sorta). It didn't have the kind of expectations that FE does.

Never thought I'd see the day where people argued against boobs. Freakin liberals.

I'm only joking. In all honesty I can see why so many people are upset about this. I personally don't mind it, as a matter of fact I kinda appreciate it, call me a pervert, see if I care! But this really isn't what Fire Emblem is known for. Fire Emblem is (or WAS) known for being a tactical RPG game about medieval WAR. I mean, that's what the games are supposed to be focused on, a warzone where people fight and kill each other. And now it's...well, barely anyone even talks about the war aspect of the game. I would agree with some who say that they went a little overboard with the fanservice and "love" aspects of the game. Hell, I think for the past few months the majority of the threads in this subforum have been about the possibility of same-sex marriages, who you plan to marry, and which side is better or has the better characters. I have seen so little discussion on the actual core-game itself, and that is a bit annoying. As great as Camilla's boobs and booty are boobs can be, Fire Emblem doesn't deserve to be known as the fan service franchise. These games were known for their stories, character development, and the challenges it offered the players. The trailers and hype for this game has been awesome, but almost none of it has focused on what this game is really about. That's why people are getting annoyed. Again, I really couldn't care less how much fan service they stuff into this game, I'm just hoping that it doesn't take away from the gameplay itself. As long as I still have a good time playing, and the characters interest me (with more than their looks), I'll be happy.

Also REALLLLLY hoping for a 18+ option where they won't censor EVERYTHING that this game has to offer. Not likely, but we can pray, right?

True. Heck, everyone in that game had a nude option.

if you're referring to my post, I specifically said I don't know why people would have a problem with this picture when similar content was in Xenoblade without a fuss being made. I agree that hot springs and dressing up or down aren't the issue.

Well, first of all Xenoblade was (and still relatively is) a new franchise, so there weren't the same expectations for it as there were for one that's a quarter century old.

Also, I've seen a fair few people complain/make fun of the ridiculously impractical and fanservicey outfits in the game. Heck, I'm one of them.

I'm not gonna judge people for being excited about it or liking it! It's something that I don't like, full stop.

Lilith might work, but THIS is what full fanservice JUST FOR ME would look like:

[spoiler=Hoshido side, will do Nohr on request]Joker: Kamui, come quickly! An enemy approaches the castle!

Kamui: Fine, fine. Sorry, Ebony, your belly rub's gonna have to wait.

Ebony: MEOOW!

(outside)

Kamui: Huh, I'm the first one here. Wonder where everyone else is?

Ryoma: What are your orders?

Kamui: Erm. . .what's with the tall white hat?

Ryoma: I was supposed to cook dinner tonight.

Hinoka: Ready!

Kamui: Hinoka, an apron won't protect you from arrows!

Hinoka: I came directly from the shop! I even locked it up, like you requested!

Takumi: *yawns*

Kamui: . . .night clothes? And a nighty-cap?

Takumi: You woke me up from a perfectly good nap!

Suzukaze: Reporting.

Felicia: I made it~!

Kamui: The two of you are soaking wet! And what is up with that cloth over your head, Suzukaze?

Felicia: Ah, well. . .

Suzukaze: ....

Kamui: Do you really have to give me that look?

Felicia: You said that we were both ill-fitted for the kitchen, so. . .

Suzukaze: You ordered us to do everyone's laundry instead.

Kamui: Oh, uh, right. Thanks.

Silas: Am I late?

Kamui: Silas, you're covered head to toe in dirt! And a garden hoe is not a lance!

Silas: But I prepared the vegetable gardens, just like you asked!

Sakura: Let's go~!

Nishiki: ....

Suzukaze: A giant pink fluffy bow? On BOTH of you?

Kamui: Oh dear. . .

I'm really hoping for an AO option ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Forgive me for my ignorance...but what does AO mean?

Lol I'm a freaking idiot. That'd be awesome wouldn't it?

I'd actually be more sympathetic to complaints about fan service in that game since, at least in XC, the nude armor was at certain points in the game likely the best you had. In other words it was much more important and relevant to the main game than stripping is in FE Fates. I made fun of some of the outfits in XC too. I sometimes refused to put an outfit on certain characters because I thought it would ruin the seriousness of potential cutscene (i.e. the wingged hat on Shulk)

But also didn't say it ruined the game for me and bring it up as negative that affected my evaluation of it either.

Adult Only AKA a rating that will be given only to ero games.

But honestly I played ero SRPGs before not that I will mind if IS will do so but will be sorta uncomfortable being the game is a FE game.

Honestly, the game's mere existence is fan service if you really think about it. We are lucky to be getting it at all. And I can almost guarantee that a majority of the more "objectionable" content won't pass censorship exams on arrival in the US. Bravely Default had some costume adjustments, and they were hardly necessary (or effective in some cases).

But really, everyone here should just remember that this game should not even be happening and we are fortunate to be getting it.

All parts to do with characterisation fall under the narrative and writing. This is just categorically wrong.

Yeah no, sorry, I simply cannot agree. I can't engage my suspension of disbelief when the game is so absoloutely blatant about it's intentions.

I also disagree that having an exaggerated trait or habit prevents them from having individual purposes, motivations, backstories or themes.

I never said this. I was pointing out the hero-worship and ways you the various ways you can "play" with your units dehumanises them.

It's not as if past FE games had such complex characters that you couldn't summarize many of the past characters easily with an image and a bio.

Again, I never said this. I'm pointing out that currently, people are able to pick out and point to the characters they find very appealing based on an image and bio, to the point where they're already playing matchmaker, looking forward to fondling them or getting their confession dialogue, w/e. Whilst I can certainly say that there are character designs that I've found appealing in the history of the franchise, this kind of enthusiasm for characters one doesn't know yet is primarily rooted in the fact that people already know what to expect, or they don't really care and are in it for aesthetics alone.

I didn't decide I liked Duessel as character when I first saw him. I decided that after I observed his own actions and behaviour in rebellion of Grado as a whole as indicative of his strong sense of morality, which won over his sense of duty. I didn't decide I liked Jill as a character when I first saw her. I decided that after I saw her come to terms with the lies she'd been brought up to believe, and grow as a person into an open minded young woman. But you get the point. Not everyone is comparable to that, but I'd rather more examples of these than what we're getting now.

The majority of them definitely don't feel like people to me, so I don't feel like "caricature" is an inappropriate term to use.

Pretty sure his daughter is a Cordelia expy anyway.

Judging by his character description he's basically male Cordelia himself. His daughter just looks like her.

Instant favorite character.

I just hope I don't have to marry him to create his daughter (in which case I'd have to play as female)... As I don't know if the marriage mechanics remain the same.

Who does he have an unrequited crush on?

Please don't censor Camilla in any cutscene/fanservice IS...

I wonder if it's possible to mod Awakening's NA DLC to show Tharja's buttocks...
