As previously reported, this project began with Kaga and a group of people with a desire to work on a private project using the doujin software SRPG Studio. Once it’s done, the game will be available to play for free.

The above shows some more gameplay screenshots, and it looks pretty reiminiscent of the older Fire Emblem games.

In an earlier post, Kaga mentioned that he gathered 10 staff members that range from acquaintances to professional developers, and while he considers it a small yet excellent group of members, he says that it’s been exhausting to work on Vestaria Saga through the hot summer.

That said, Kaga is currently looking to increase the staff number by two or three additional members from people that are reading his blog. Here are his requirements:

  • Someone that loves strategy RPGs and would like to try making one.
  • Be polite and proper.
  • Must have some endurance and time to spare.
  • Someone that really wants to participate in the project.

Those who wish to participate can leave a comment on his blog page. Kaga updated the page adding that they’re having trouble getting a character designer, so that certain “wonderful artist” he had in mind before may not have been available.

He notes that he’s willing to pay for a character designer (as long as they’re not too expensive) and jokingly asks if there are any people out there that can draw characters he likes. The character designer will be required to draw about 100 characters faces at 96 x 96 px resolution. Kaga hopes to have it figured out by this fall.

We’ll have more details on Vestaria Saga as it becomes available.

So yeah. For people who are less then thrilled by the way Fire Emblem has headed for the past few incarnations, here is something that may fill a hole.

With my Power Master game coming soon, I hope to be somewhat recognized in the future. My other team members, Haon on this site and my brother, are better artists than I am. But I have more game making experience. I'd comment on his blog... but can't read Japanese :P Even so, I'm pretty sure I am not the guy for the job, though it would be fun to work on a Fire Emblem-esque game.

Also, are these pictures from TearRing Saga? Or is it made in similar art style?

so this is why kaga left eh

I like the way the portraits are done so far, though the fact that one of them is just Caeda is kind of bugging me.

So if Kaga is still looking for a character designer for 100+ characters, does that mean the portraits that we are seeing on the screenshots are simply assets that came with the engine? Because they look pretty neat and very reminiscent of TRS.

It kinda does look like portraits ripped straight from TRS to serve as placeholders.

I'm pretty sure they are.

EDIT: Yeah, at least one of the guys is a TRS Boss:

Pretty sure the girl on the cover is art of her too:

i'm already liking that it's a woman dominating the title image and not alongside a dude. it's minor, but nice.

i'm hoping the program itself gets translated like the rpg makers so i can play with it, too.

The title screen seems to be fanart of Berwick Saga

The guy in the background is Zephyros, who has some sort of story connection to Larentia.

Still looks pretty early in development, especially the last image with the white space around the light tower and boats.

The map design looks pretty good so far though, that's definitely a plus.

This is interesting..

Still early in developement, but looks promising. Definitely keeping an eye on this.

He may need to make sure it's not a complete clone of Fire Emblem, although as a free to play game, that may not be required.

(Watch a publisher picking this up and turning it into a dating sim after the 13th installement NO!)

I just hope it's more similar to FE4 and 5 and less similar to Berwick Saga.

What's wrong with Berwick Saga?

Also, this looks almost exactly like Tear Ring Saga artwise. Not even Berwick Saga.

Definitely glad that Kaga is back to making games. However, I have my reservations about this engine he's using. I watched some footage of the engine in action, and man does it lag during the battle sequences. On top of that, the animations are as awkward as Tear Ring Saga's.

Honestly, Kaga deserves better than SRPG Studio. :(
