Considering how they're burning flags and bibles outside the federal courthouse in Portland, I'd say that the pilot program could really use some extra thought into it.

The far right is blowing it out of proportion. Even Fox News noted that the night was largely peaceful and only a small number of agitators were doing the burning. A lot of protesters even helped out to put out the fire.

Although I disagree with burning the Bible and American flag, I can understand the sentiment. There is also nothing wrong with burning those objects as a form of freedom of speech. Personally though, I would just stick to burning the Confederate, Russian, and Chinese flag since nobody likes those flags.

If I was in some people's shoes, I would burn the Bible too in retaliation if I was being told who I could or could not love, have arbitrary prude morals shoved down my throat, being forced to conform to a certain identity or risk ostracization, or experienced any of the shitty things people go through if they lived in more religiously extreme areas of America. While I do not see the Bible as a symbol of oppression and tyranny, it can be a symbol of oppression and tyranny for others. If anything, Christians in the past were a thousand times worst than those agitators as they accused and burned innocent women alive for being witches. Even recently, right wing Christians are not all that better, as they are ostracizing people over sexual identity issues and overreacting to cultural trends and labeling D&D players as Satan worshippers, not to mention contributing to the rising pandemic death toll by facilitating the spread of COVID-19 by flouting social distancing guidelines when congregating.

The American flag can also be a symbol of tyranny and oppression for others. The United States basically robbed Native Americans of their land, wiped out a huge chunk of their population with disease, and erased a lot of their culture through forced assimilation.

I'm in Chicago, if I believed Fox I would see a burning wasteland.  Of course it is just lies.  A picture Trump wants to paint.  Burning cities, these out of control violent rioters attacking cops destroying everything.  The Antifa Boogeyman (Last 25 years number of deaths caused by them.....ZERO).  Then he can send his federal troops as he has done, cause he is bringing back order to chaos.  The poor innocents in these cities that look like post apocalypse world in Terminator, can now have hope and be safe again.

Not only does this distract from his abject failure with the Covid virus (promoting a doctor saying masks don't help, you get infected from sex demons in sleep, vaccines come from aliens, and hydroxychloroquine is the cure!), it is testing the waters for him to use these federal troops for voter intimidation, blocking voting polls, and maybe declaring martial law.  Yeah and his little tweet about delaying the election cause of mail in voting posed as a question.  Well if that wasn't shot down by many Republicans, he would try to do just that...maybe he still will.

Thread over. Nothing to discuss until after the election.

If Trump gets reelected, can I propose stricter requirements for presidency?

But in all seriousness, there's activists in Louisville, Kentucky demanding that the workforce of local businesses are at least 23% black and at least 23% of their goods came from blacks. Normally, this wouldn't be such an big deal; but according to Wikipedia, the Bluegrass State is roughly 88% white and the metropolitan area of Louisville is around 74% white with some other racial minorities filling in the gap. It'll be kind of a stretch if everyone started following it, since there's barely enough people to meet that quota.

And the more important part of that article is an Cuban business owner decrying these demands because he's accused of being an racist for...Not being supportive enough towards the movement.

Here’s our Democratic nominees for President and Vice President.

Oof, I was hoping for someone else. She cracked down hard on marijuana and drugs in general in the past. She seems to have soften quite a bit on that issue and a few other social issues over the last few years though, so I guess I am much less opposed to her being Vice President now as long as she does not push for social conservative legislation.

That being said, Biden was much worse on drugs though and I think he helped contributed to the war on drugs too, so no matter how hard Kamala Harris cracked down on drugs in the past in California, Biden was like ten or a hundred times worse as he cracked down hard on drugs across the whole nation.

The only bummer about the news for me is "We JUST elected her". Anyway, her record as a congresswoman has been stellar, so I wouldn't focus on her prosecutorial record. I mean, their job description is very literally "be the asshole side of the justice system"

She will completely own Pence in debates, though that isn't hard.  She is black, East Indian, and a woman so casts a wide net.

Wait that is completely wrong.  All this money is funneled to the wealthy but then it trickles down and brings up the poor and working class.  What that god among men Reagan was wrong?  The wealth disparity has just grown larger and larger instead?

Maybe we should invest in some programs to build up the poor and give them better opportunites?  What you want hand outs, socialist, communist!!!! UnAmerican!

Warren is too easy to ridicule.  Trump already has his racist Pocohantes nickname for her, and his dumb insults power up his base.  Sad, but true.  Whitmer, that young dumb woman who doesn't know what she's doing was also an easy target.  His hateful base and supporters would rally to that.  Harris was the safe pick, and all I care about is winning.  Not who the best VP candidate is or was.  Knock the tyrant out of office and into a prison cell is all that matters.

I was never much of a "have some respect for the dead" sort of guy, but there's something very uncomfortable about using a dead man's website and social media accounts to continue spreading smear campaigns as if they were still alive:

Mere hours before the news of Cain's death, when he was struggling to breath in an ICU, the account was already spreading gross conspiracy theories about the virus. It's like some kind of dystopian horror to think your voice will be used after your death.

That's the ugly world of US politics for ya mate. Gotta use a dead black man to be able to attack a black woman without looking racist lol.

And to be fair, the 2 are going to get a lot of shit about their past as they rightly should and the 2 should own up to it. It's just again... there is trash in the White House that needs to be removed.

The classic Republican double standard.  Democrats have to perfect angels in any way, but Republicans aren't held accountable for anything.  Any criticism that they have of Biden and Harris, Trump and Pence have done a zillion times worse.

https://www.npr.org/2020/08/13/902109991/trump-admits-to-opposing-funding-for-postal-service-to-block-more-voting-by-mail

Mail is moving slower, and many people depend on it for medical supplies, treatments as well as other important things.  Looking for a Republican to stand up to him?   Looking for his supporters to drop him?  What, nothing?

Yeah double standard.

I love that Trump can vote by mail, but also tells people not to do it. *giggles*

What's beginning to baffle me is that he and his administration are flagrantly trying to fraud the election, up to and including interfering with mail-in voting during a pandemic, and allegedly working with Kanye to sabotage the opposing party, and whatever powers that be that could check and stop this nonsense are still permitting him to run.

So I read up on Kamala Harris' voting record and it turns out it's actually very progressive. Also a bunch on her time as prosecutor, and apparently she didn't prosecute people with the three strikes law unless it was violent crime, and also never asked for the death penalty, even if it would be popular.

Considering all this, I feel a lot better with her as VP pick. A lot of Bernie bros I know hate her guts, mostly because she used to be a cop, but it turns out that they would like her if they could get over that.

I was listening to this

Just some random shit on my recommendations. I found the video dryly hilarious, but he has a line that's like

"a lot of people are talking about kamala's status as a cop as a pro, and a al ot of people are talking about kamala's status as a cop as a uh...  con"

Makes me think this is the perfect VP pick. Can't even say we're not tough on crime.

She's also transphobic, placing trans women in men's prisons (which is also very dangerous for the women) while denying them health care. She's not as bad as Trump, but she's still pretty horrible. Those pronouns in her Twitter bio are deceiving.

Seriously, search "Kamala transphobic" on Twitter and you'll get a bunch of people saying the same true things about her plus some other stuff.

Yeah, I sincerely doubt that claim. If only because Department of Corrections decides where you're housed, and how you're treated. That's not up to the DA or AG. And let me remind you that she set up an anti-LGBTQ hate crime unit while DA, that she was instrumental in getting rid of the gay panic defense, and that she opposed Prop 8 when she was AG, and didn't defend it in court.

The Kamala Harris discourse has been just:

Though all the VP candidates have been talked about like that the past few weeks, even before the big announcement I've been hoping for a swift end to this step of the election cycle. The VP pick is never this crucial. It's just meant to plant the idea in the public's heads that this person may make a good president one day. Unless you believe in that theory that Biden has agreed to resign two years into his presidency in favor of a president who is "less electable but much better suited to the job". It's a nice fantasy, but I can't imagine somebody running for president for decades who isn't still convinced they are the best person for the job. Egomania doesn't go away with age.

This opinion article points out Kamala not only made some bad transphobic arguments against inarcerated trans woman Michelle Norsworthy, but also thought sex work should be criminalized (which is very bad) and was vague about her support of trans women.

https://www.washingtonblade.com/2019/01/21/harris-takes-full-responsibility-for-briefs-against-surgery-for-trans-inmates/

This article mentions said vague statement where she states she'd get transitioning inmates the medical attention they needed, required and deserved (to which for all we know, her definition is actually not enough despite the fact she could have more explicitly defended them) and also her reasoning for supporting the California DoC&R was (and I paraphrase) "I personally opposed their decisions but it was my job so I did it anyways". Sounds suspect. And there's a little more in there, too.

She's acted in opposition of trans people, and that isn't something that can be brushed away with "but she did this thing!" The many trans people on Twitter vocally against her says a lot.

There's been a massive uproar of support amongst the older black community, and she appeals to suburban white people as well. And even though they're like .5% of the population, indian female voters are energized too.

Being vague about your support for something does not equate to you being opposed to it. Doing your job if you're right on the law even if you disagree with the outcome is not suspect, it's doing your damn job. Acting in opposition to trans people has to be taken with a big fucking grain of salt, and to remind you, it's based on one(1) court case she argued that CDoC was not required to offer an inmate sexual reassignment surgery and that psychotherapy and hormones were the extent of their duty of care, based on the evidence.
