That's fine, I think I sort of know what you mean. Sometimes our brains make weird connections that are hard to explain. I for instance, often imagine words or names as colors. For instance, I think of my name (Rachel) as a "red" name, even though I'm not even a big fan of red, I'd say orange or blue is my favorite color, and I see my middle name of Ann as "yellow". It makes no real sense, and I couldn't tell you why, it's just something my brain does.

I find neuroscience and gender psychology fascinating, although I'm not the most typical example of femininity, although I can't sing to save my life, so maybe I fit there. Whenever I take the Myers-Briggs personality test, I get INTJ, which is the most rare female type, but I'm just a weirdo in general.

I think I'll try to do a better Soren for my next project, although the next few days will be pretty busy.

Sounds like you might have this. It's not a bad thing, and it might even help with your artistic endeavors!

Oooh, Rezzy, these are all super neat, I love erasers and honestly, I'm in seventh grade, but I barely remember fifth, let alone second. Sad to hear about your friend, but there's a saying that says that a person truly dies only when they're forgotten and with a person like you, I doubt she'll be forgotten.

Regarding associations, I'm absolutely the same and last time I got INFP, but I definitely have traits from the the Analyst group as well.

Thanks, I don't really share my collection often. Most find it weird. I've got memories as far back as when I was three. I remember my sister being born, and she's three years younger than me. I remember riding to the hospital in the front passenger seat, with my Dad driving. We didn't have airbags back then, and they didn't advocate for kids being in the back seat yet. I didn't even have a booster seat or anything. Oh, how times change.

Sounds like you might have this. It's not a bad thing, and it might even help with your artistic endeavors!

Yeah, I've read about that a bit, and may very well have it, but I'm wary about self-diagnosing. It's kind of impossible to know how I'd perceive the world without the condition if I do have, so a control to compare against is unavailable. Then there's the school of thought that poses the question of how we really know what we see is the same as what everyone else sees. How do I know my orange is the same as yours?

Although I didn't realize synesthesia was so common, 1 in 23 people or 4.4% according to that article. It does seem to be correlated with other mental disorders, so maybe that's a reason.

Bizarre example chartreuse is neon vomit green, but the word chartreuse seems "red" to me. Maybe it's because it has "char" in it, but just a weird observation. I once had a guy say he wished he could spend an hour inside my head.

Well, I finally got to draw again. Yay for being mostly unpacked at the new house.

A sketch of Droite from Tales of Vesperia. I'll color it in, when I get the chance.

I always appreciate feedback of any sort.

Hah, cute. She looks disturbingly psychotic.

Looks like your proportions are improving.

Thanks, that was actually the look I was going for. She's one of the minor villains from Tales of Vesperia, if you're not familiar with the Tales series.

I find, apart from face symmetry and such, hands and feet, and to an extant elbows and knees are the hardest parts to make look right. In hindsight, I made Droite look a bit flat chested here, but that could have been fixed if I knew how to shade worth a darn.

Here's some suggestions and critique :>

  • Shoulders don't really bulge out that much unless the character has muscular biceps. Based on how slim the arms are, it doesn't look like the character does so no need to have the shoulders that rounded :>
  • You should try extending some of the lines that make up the hair to show dimension and overlapping. Drawing just the outline of the hair can make it look pretty flat.
  • Try drawing some folds and wrinkles to clothes! It'll add depth to your character.
  • Tips on proportion (realistically speaking, of course. Depending on your stylization, you can break some of these rules but it's good to know the basics of the human form from a realistic perspective. That's part of art translation: it's good to know how to grasp the basics of how to draw something from how it originally looks before simplifying it and stylizing it.): Elbows end around the waist; wrists line up with your crotch; not sure if you're feet are too big/small? Your feet are the same length as your forearm; Hands too big or too small? An open hand should be relatively the same size as your face; Legs too long/too short? The length from the hips to the bottom of your feet should be the same length as the hip to the top of your head; Eyes too close or far apart? The space between should be the same length as the eye; Not sure where the ears should be? The top of your ear should line up with your eye while the bottom of the ear lines up with the tip of your nose.
  • As for how to shade breasts to give them dimension: http://pre15.deviantart.net/25dc/th/pre/i/2012/177/c/d/gm_task_15__shading_the_human_body2_by_teacup_creations-d54xw4g.png

I've done lots of life drawing and nude drawings in high school and in my first year of college so I still have lots of artist tips to share :>

Yeah, that's probably my fault for not being a great artist, but she's supposed to have sort of poofy sleeve shoulders. I guess working on the clothing folds might help with that. Here's a pic from the intro to the game for reference.

I'll try to take the rest of tips into account. I think I'll color this one in first, then maybe try to work that stuff into the next one. I really need to figure out how to shade stuff on GIMP.

I wish I could draw nudes well. More often than not, I count on clothing to hide the fact that I can't draw bodies well.

Thanks again, and as always, feedback is always appreciated.

You don't necessarily have to draw nudes but it's good to have some sort of reference of the human form to really know how clothing will fit and flow on the body. That's another important thing: do not be afraid to use references. Not only are you subconsciously teaching yourself anatomy but you're also training your eyes and hand to coordinate with each other - the reason why some drawings aren't coming out the way you have them pictured in your head is because you probably don't have a lot of experience with drawing what you see; you need to teach your hands and eyes to work together. Once you've grasped that, you'll get a lot better at drawing what you imagine.

But there's nothing wrong with not having a lot of experience - every growing artist isn't born from knowing every bit of anatomy!

Here's another great site that you can turn to for really good references :>

Yeah, it's funny about drawing anatomy. I have an intimate knowledge of anatomy from med school, I just kinda stink at drawing it, but I suppose it will get better with experience. Maybe I can whip out my old text books for proportion reference. I've still got the Netter Anatomy textbook, and he's sort of an expert at hand drawn pictures of anatomically correct true to life images.

Here's a colored version of Droite. Let me know if the sketch or colored in version looks better. I'm even wondering if shading would even work on my style. Everything seems kind of flat, but I'm not sure if it would just look wrong with shading.

b8LrubL.png?1

I've thought about experimenting with nude drawings to work on anatomy as per carefreejules recommends, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to get actual feedback on how I did there, due to SF's no porn policy, and I'm too embarrassed to show any of my drawings to people in person.

There's a HUUUUUUUUGE difference between anatomical nudity and porn/sexual content.

There's nothing inherently sexual about anatomical nudity - it's a method and a way of practicing drawing the human form. There's nothing shameful about drawing a nude form of the human body :>

There are many different ways of drawing the human form without suggesting there being nudity:

Oh, I wasn't implying that all nudes were porn, I just figured it was a gray area that probably would be frowned upon, if I posted it. I actually like nude drawings, as art has a long history of utilizing the naked human form, and it's not inherently sexual. It's just something that will get slapped with a mature label.

And I'm not embarrassed by nude drawing in particular, I'm embarrassed to show off any of my drawings. I would rather show off a nude drawing I did well, rather than one of my usual pieces of art.

I went and tried to use one of your poses there to make a Camilla. I'm not sure if using a model counts as cheating, but here you go...

Oh I didn't make those poses since I find poses on google and use them as references. Using references is never cheating.

I hope you don't mind me drawing over your drawing with corrections:

ZP2DaBd_zps7habtq7q.jpg

The form is pretty accurate, but I recommend trying to work with guidelines to get the form down before going in and actually drawing. It really helps to break down the human form into simple shapes before diving to adding details.

As for bikinis, don't be afraid to look at references for how the fabric covers the breast from different angles. For the right breast, the bikini wasn't quite covering it up as much as it's supposed to. Don't want there to be a nip-slip right? See how in Camilla's official art, the clothing on her breasts wrap around similarly to what I corrected? You definitely had the right idea for the left breast which is great! Boobs aren't easy.

And one more thing, her left leg doesn't look like it was exactly attached to her hip so make sure to keep your eyes on how the hips are connecting with the upper thigh! :>

Otherwise, good work! :D

Thanks, and thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it. I'll try to make a few alterations before coloring it.

Funny thing about the arm, I actually stood in front of a mirror to try to get where to put the wrist. I'm pretty lanky, so maybe that was a mistake, but my right wrist falls a few inches below my crotch. (Funny story, but my left arm is an inch shorter than my right.)

I was worried her head looked a bit small, but that's probably because my style tends to exaggerate head size.

I went with bikinis, because I figured it was a good substitute for nudes.

Now, hands aren't the easiest thing to draw in the world but something to keep in mind is that when your hand is resting at your sides, your fingers curl naturally (give it a try! :> ).

Thanks, hands are one of the tougher things to draw.

My problem with them, is I try not to draw and erase too much, because than it ruins the rest of the picture and I have to start over. I still do all my sketching on paper.

I would give critique if I wasn't so dead and tired, but I really just want to say that I'm strangely proud by Rezzy's progress, even though I didn't do anything.

My condolences on your death, but thank you for the compliment. It's nice to have well-wishers; I've got a few ideas for future projects, maybe a some more swim suit stuff to get the bodies down.

Unfortunately, I've got a toddler running around right now, so I won't be able to draw until he's asleep.

And now, to continue the swimsuit collection is Lyn...

01HawuY.jpg?1

For some reason, the head looks a bit small, but otherwise, it's okay. I think I may add a bit of hair to the top, to make her head not look so small. Considering she's got bangs, I think I underdrew the top of her hair.

Feedback is always appreciated.

The form is really good but:

- Avoid drawing the lines/creases on the palm of hands and fingers. It kind of makes your character look like they have wrinkly hands.

- Avoid drawing just the outline of the hair. Lyn looks like she has spiky hair. Hair comes in groups of strands and depending on the character, they're usually smooth. I'll draw an example when I'm not on mobile.

Thanks, I agree the hand looks a bit wrinkly, I just wanted to put something there, since it wasn't looking right with a big blank hand, but I guess I made it look worse.

I guess I've got a case of anime hair there. My original ponytail was just a smooth tube of hair, but I'll try to fix it to look better.

01HawuY_zpskswc8tkc.jpg

Sorry for the double post but here's another set of corrections :>

Oh, poor Lyn with her fat thighs. I seem to tend to draw limbs too long in general, maybe it's because I'm pretty lanky myself.

With Lyn's right hand, that's meant to be her thumb facing us. I don't object to changing the orientation of her hand, I'm just sure if it was clear.

I'm not sure what you mean by diversify style of bikini. Just do different styles of swimwear? I actually didn't really put much thought into that part, and it's more of a way to draw anatomical accuracy without being naked. I thought about maybe doing a skirt or something, but then I'd be covering up the pelvis, which I don't have much practice with.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll try to make some changes.
