"I am a prince before I am a son or brother."-Marth, Shadow Dragon

I second this. It may not be my all time favourite FE quote, but it's the first that came to my mind. It's always hard for me to point ONE favourite thing anyway.

Also, one of the funniest:

"Niles: Relax. Hear me out. Tell me... what were your hobbies as a child?

Peri: Dismemberment, murder, and torture. You know... normal kid stuff."

This one too:

"Gatrie, I swear you'd hit on a tree if I dressed it in a skirt! Tell me I'm wrong!" - Shinon in RD.

"I am a prince before I am a son or brother" is a classic, but my favorite conversation and quote come from the prologue of Shadow Dragon:

Jagen: “Look, sire. See how Altea shrinks on the horizon…”

Marth: “..aven…”

Jagen: “I beg your pardon?”

Marth: “I am a craven. Powerless to save my sister, to staunch my kingdom’s wounds; to ease my people’s fears…”

Jagen: “This…was your only recourse, sire. But surely, one day, you will be able to set things right…”

Marth:“”Surely”? Why do words of such conviction smack so much of uncertainty when spoken? Not surely, Jagen. Assuredly. Gra will pay for their acts. Today, though, allow me to wallow in this pain, to feel every awful twist of it. I never want to forget.”

Jagen: “Sire…”

Marth: “I will return, Altea! Your prince will return to you one day!”

And I also can't forget Roger's recruitments... really almost all of my favorite quotes and conversations come from the DS games, particularly Shadow Dragon haha

"Ike, hero of the Crimean Liberation, leader of Greil Mercenaries, and father of Sothe's children"

"For once, I agree with Prince Xander. To start, I'm more attractive than him"

"I'm not smiling. I'm just frowning less intensely"

lots of paraphrasing but yeah

"A kingless country is a country still; but a king without subjects rules naught but hills."

Shadow Dragon is always a great reference for these kinds of threads.

All of these good Shadow Dragon quotes has convinced me to play the game again. Well, played SF...well played.

I still won't like the gameplay but I'm a sucker for good writing.

One of my personal favorite lines from 7 right here, mostly for the comedy of it

"Frail? You? Serra, you have no need of any escort to protect you. Even the most hardened criminal would flee in terror after five minutes in your company. I'll return your money. Gladly. Now, will you please go on to Ostia alone?" - Erk

"I am a prince before I am a son or brother."-Marth, Shadow Dragon

I also will join in, saying this is a personal favorite.

"I have lived as a knight, and I intend to die as one. There are no other roads left for me to walk." - Camus, Shadow Dragon

Then the sequels reveal he didn't actually die...

Ahem, On topic:

"Cad! Beast! Pervert! Devil! I simply will NOT allow you to take advantage of me in my confused state!"

-L'Arachel's reaction to Ephraim removing his armor so she can do her healing thing in their B support.

Some of my favorites has already been said, but here are others that I like:

Naesala: Heh. It's funny you should ask that... I'm not deluded enough to think that I can beat you. The goddess herself would hesitate to fight you. But my people are frozen solid, and I have to delude myself enough to think that I can help save them.

Naesala: The curse of the blood pact applies if the master's orders aren't obeyed, but by the law of Begnion, you're overruled. So, Lekain, right here, right now... I'm going to tear you apart, as I've been wanting to do for years.

Joshua: Listen... You can't reduce a nation to loot waiting to be divided. And more importantly, I made a vow to my mother. I'm going to succeed her as ruler of my homeland. Hey Caellach... You're the one who killed my mother, aren't you?

Caellach: Yeah... Sorry 'bout that. Things happen, you know? C'mon, Joshua, don't hate me. This is war. There's nothing you can do about it. Besides, grudges get in the way of work, right?

Joshua: That's true. It's as you say. Listen Caellach... I've got to kill you now. Don't hold it against me.

Valter: Why do you laugh, dolt?

Cormag: How can I not? I've dreamt of revenge, chased it for days... And now it's here before me. Oh, Valter... Your death will be slow and agonizing.

Zelgius: I trust you know who you face. Zelgius, commander of this army. If you are not worthy of fighting me, then you are only wasting my time.

Sanaki: I don't understand. How can you be a goddess and not know? I thought gods were perfect beings who knew everything!

Yune: Gods? Perfect? Where did you get that idea? You haven't met a lot of gods, have you?

Sanaki: Well, no. But divinity created life from nothing! Surely only perfect beings could do that!

Yune: We did create life, and can do many things that you creatures of flesh can't. But that doesn't make us perfect. It just means we can make mistakes on a much grander scale.

Sephiran: All beings endure tragedies for as long as they continue to live. It has always been the case that suffering is unavoidable. And this grim reality plays out over and over, in every country, under every ruler... As long as there are beings who feel, they will feel pain.

Ike: So what? We should all just give in and die? Put it behind you. Deal with it.

Sephiran: Do not make light of this...

Ike: I'm not. Sephiran, I'm extremely grateful that you once helped me through a terrible time. But we have to accept that occasionally we all have to deal with hard times. I've had pain, I've had suffering, and I have gotten up and moved on. I don't try to forget what happened that day. I just accept it... And neither that or anything else will ever stop me.

Sephiran: You are a strong man, Ike, son of Gawain. But not everyone is as strong as you...

Both Ike vs Black Knight battle dialogues are pretty good.

PoR

Black Knight: What an odd fate. This will be the third time I have defeated you. The first was in the forest of Gallia. The second at Delbray in Crimea.
Ike: We've met twice, and I've lost twice. But the third time will be different.
Black Knight: Oh?
Ike: My sword-fighting skills were given to me by my father. If I stay true to them, I cannot lose.
Black Knight: Did you never think that using your father's techniques on the man who killed him would be futile?
Ike: My father robbed himself of using his stronger arm. If he had, he would not have lost to the likes of you.
Black Knight: Hah... You think so? Let us test your stronger arm, then. Come, son of Gawain... show me your strength.

RD

Ike: So, you are alive. Somehow, I knew it wasn't over yet.
Black Knight: Of course it wasn't over. You were a boy trying to live up to the memory of the greatest swordsman in history.
Ike: And yet, I was the one who walked out of the castle that day.
Black Knight: You have your father to thank for that. When you told me that he had crippled himself, I realized that I had never fought him at all, merely his shadow.
Ike: What are you getting at?
Black Knight: I saw immediately that you were not your father's equal, but that one day you might be. So I did the only thing I could to keep you alive... I let you win.
Ike: ...You did, didn't you? I've relived that fight so many times... How could I not have seen it before?
Black Knight: You were not yet capable of seeing it. But I had to let you live, so that you could continue to train and perhaps one day be worthy of Gawain's legacy. My armor's blessing is gone; let us see if that day is today.
Ike: I promise that it will be. Begin.

In retrospect, BK was laying it on a little thick when praising Grail. I mean, best swordsman in history? Are we forgetting about the woman who dual wielded Alondite and Ragnel?

You know, those fights are a big reason I like the BK so much. He probably won't be topped as my favorite FE villain/anti-hero (he was pretty much a villain in PoR, but more of an anti-hero in RD).

Also, I doubt the BK really knows about how well Altina fought. He can't say for sure whether or not she was better than Greil since she lived centuries before.

"A kingless country is a country still; but a king without subjects rules naught but hills." - Ceada Quoting her Father [King Talys] in Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon.

My reasoning for this is mostly because it shows the importance of the people in the country, rather than the monarch that rules them. This quote came to me as I was trying to analyze a poem by Queen Elizabeth I, "On Monsieur's Departure, 1582". She talks about how she is in love, and how she must choose between her duties as a ruler and someone she cares for. She would serve her people and take that responsibility rather than pursue her love, and live in modest sorrow. This almost confirmed that this quote has much truth and merrit to it. The people of your country are invaluable - learn to serve them as they must do to you. I believe that this quote has worth even in today's world.

I honestly think the villains of Tellius are a stain upon the otherwise intriguing story, which is a shame. The Black Knight murders Greil in cold blood in front of his son - who doesn't even seem to mind at the end of Radiant Dawn - and then whines about it not being a challenge. I wonder if he even briefly considered removing the armor which makes him impervious to damage if he wanted a challenge, but hey, why use logic.

The Black Knight is essentially a mad fanboy getting way more love than I think he deserves, so I can't take his lines seriously. I know it's subjective, but he and Ashnard just make me roll my eyes.

I agree that BK is a tremendously shitty person and that Radiant Dawn basically retconed his personality to make him seem noble, but the battle quotes are good. Although his sympathetic treatment in Radiant Dawn was bullshit, I think he was a good villain (aka, you aren't supposed to like him) in Path of Radiance. Sinister, menacing and a strong personal drive for the protagonist. BK facilitates Ike's personal growth from being an unsure, shadow of his father to a man who defeated the most powerful warrior on the continent.

In regards to his invulnerable armor, he could have been slain by Ragnel, which is why he wanted Grail to use it. Perhaps had Grail outperformed him in battle (even if he couldn't technically cut through the armor) he would have relented, but Grail lost in battle fucking WTA bullshit without landing a single hit on BK so it didn't even matter.

"Haha! Look fools! A giant walks among you! Come! Challenge me, and break your weapons in the progress!"

Wallace from Blazing Sword. I really wish there were more quotes after promotion like this. Adds more to the character.

Schaeffer (FE9, Ch. 22 boss): “...Gwaar... Haaaarr... Haaaaaa... Shoulda brought...more priests... Or some...babies... Dang...

Best generic boss quote.

Every word that comes out of Bastian's text box is great too.

I rather enjoyed Camilla's boss dialouge with Hinoka when you fight her in Notre Sagasse, tho that may be my dislike of Hoshido, the country, I like BR as a game, combined with my like of when Nohr can rub something in Hoshido's face talking more than anything

Roy and Sue's supports are awesome

Excellus' "I do so enjoy inappropriate touching" for teaching me Out of Context is Best Context"

"In which case, you may pursue a new career opportunity in food services." ~Tiki to Anna in their A support.

The un-subtle euphemism there is just perfect! Also, poetic justice for Anna's greed.

The fact it's followed up with "I understand you're a job-killing socialist..." made it even better!

Shadow Dragon has the best quotes. It has the best localisation.

Marth realises the sacrifices he must make.

Marth: “There. That ought to do for the enemy soldiers around here. Malledus! Why aren’t you with my sister? Did you leave her someplace safe?"

Malledus: “…Princess Elice will not be joining us. She has elected to stay at the castle.”

(Marth runs the way the allies came from and Malledus blocks him)

Malledus: “Hold, sire! Where are you going?”

Marth: “Where do you think!”

Malledus: “Stop! Sire, consider for a moment why the princess would go as far as to lie to you to ensure your escape. Your sister knows that you are the future of Altea- nay, the whole land!”

Marth: “…..!”

(Flashback to Cain and Marth conversation earlier)

Cain: “His last words were as follows: “Tell my son that I leave the future of Altea and our continent in his hands. He must rise now where I have fallen. As Falchion’s rightful heir, he has been born into greatness…Now…he must be great.””

(Out of flashback)

Marth: “I’m…our future…”

Malledus: “Sire… You must live. Drink deeply now of these injustices; sip on these slights they serve. Remember them! One day you will lead us back here to avenge the fallen and reclaim Altea in their names!”

Marth: “…Then it seems my life is no longer mine to hazard.”

Malledus: “In your veins flows the blood of a hero- the blood of Anri. You are a son of House Akaneia, and sole heir to Falchion- our only hope of defeating Medeus, Emperor of Dolhr. Sire, were’t in my power, I would have you choose you own path…but I’m afraid your path has chosen you."

Marth: “……”

Marth flees Altea filled with shame.

Marth: “”Surely”? Why do words of such conviction smack so much of uncertainty when spoken? Not surely, Jagen. Assuredly. Gra will pay for their acts. Today, though, allow me to wallow in this pain, to feel every awful twist of it. I never want to forget.”

Jagen: “Sire…”

Marth: “I will return, Altea! Your prince will return to you one day!”

Nyna confronts Horace.

Horace: “What!? Dejanira’s been killed?! Then…it’s over. Soldiers! Lay down your weapons! No more Akaneian blood shall be shed! …Mine shall be the last.”

(Screen moves to castle)

Horace: “Bravo, Prince Marth. I yield. Spare the lives of my soldiers and treat my people kindly, and you may do with me as you see fit.”

(Enter Villager)

Villager: “No! Wait, please! Lord Horace is a good man! Doluna threatened him, said they’d raze the land corner to corner if he didn’t comply. So you see-“

Horace: “Hush! You’ve said enough.”

Marth: “But, Lord Horace…”

Horace: “I betrayed my fellow knights and besmirched their good name. I will not dress up my sins as kindnesses! I accept my punishment. Allow me to die a knight’s death.”

(Enter Nyna)

Nyna: “I will not!”

Horace: “…..! Princess Nyna?”

Nyna: “Horace. I heard what you said. And you have it quite right. Your crimes deserve death, or worse.”

Marth: “Nyna, what are you-“

Nyna: “But I shall give you no knight’s death. I shall give you a traitor’s life. You say you will not dress up your sins. I say you will not run from them either.”

Horace: “Your Highness…! Are you saying you wish me to live?”

Nyna: “You did all in your power to protect these people. That was honorable, Horace. But if you die today, no one will remember you for anything but your one act of betrayal. Your soldiers will have to bear that shame in your stead. Do you call that justice?”

Horace: “…..”

Nyna: “Starting today, you shall prove to the world there was value in your actions. Show us a traitor’s worth. Show us what the soldiers who fought and died for you saw to be true.”

Horace: “I…I do not know what to say.”

Nyna: “I have claimed your life, Horace. You have no say. You shall fight for us…and you shall not die. I forbid it.”

Horace: “Heh…Very well, Your Highness. As you command…”

Marth forces himself to put aside his personal gried.

Nyna: “Marth! Any word? Have you found your family? Your sister?”

Marth: “…My sister was taken by Gharnef. She is no longer here… And my…my mother is… She is dead. Slain…by that Dolunian dragon…”

Nyna: “….! Marth, I am truly sorry…”

Marth: “I thought there would be something…some part of my old life I would be coming back to. I fought so hard…”

Nyna: “You fought wonderfully, Marth.”

(Enter Malledus)

Malledus: “…Sire, might I have a moment?”

Marth: “All the moments you want, Malledus. What is it?”

Malledus: “Your people have gathered outside the castle. They are overjoyed to be free again, sire, and would like very much to see their prince.”

Marth: “All right, then. I’ll go at once.”

Nyna: “Marth…perhaps you should let that wait, just until you are able to share their joy with them. We could send someone in your stead-“

Marth: “No, that would not do. Today is a momentous day for my kingdom and my people. I must celebrate with them now, not later. Anything else would be a disservice to those who died to save Altea. I am a prince before I am a son or a brother. Come, Malledus. Let us go greet my people.”

The quality of the writing plays a huge part in why Shadow Dragon is my favourite game in the series. Even if the amount of writing is less (or perhaps because it is less), the writing that is present is of top quality.
