[spoiler=Birthright spoilers!]You'll want to get an A support between your avatar and Kaze before finishing chapter 15, else he'll die.

Also of note, the servant you have for most of the game is dependent on your avatar's gender.

The royals are all very powerful, but you probably already knew that.

Zero is essentially essential in Conquest, at least he's been invaluable for my Lunatic runs. Edit: the same goes for Effie, who's a machine in Conquest and a part of me wonders if you can even beat the game without her on harder difficulties.

Oboro is one of the few Birthright characters with a decent defense. She's an overall good unit but above all a great character, so I recommend using her.

I'd avoid Nyx and Tsubaki in all paths in which they're available.

Tell me when you're at Conquest chapter 15, for story reasons. It's a thing of beauty.

Speaking of Conquest, Elise winds up sick and unusable in chapter 12.

Chapter 10 is a Defend map.

I'd avoid Arthur and Charlotte like the plague in whichever paths they're available.

Chapter 10 is a Defend map.

I'd avoid Arthur and Charlotte like the plague in whichever paths they're available.

Let me also place emphasis on Conquest 10 as a defend map: keep your units clustered around the defend points, and make sure Elise has the Freeze staff.

Arthur has been usable in my Conquest Hard/casual run so far -- RNG has been blessing him with a number of successful critical hits even at around 15%, and he can take one physical hit or so. I probably will bench him in the late game, when I have more units.

Speaking of which, in Conquest and Revelations, the number of units you have in the early game is very limited, so your early units will probably end up OP. Be sure to evenly spread experience when you can. There are joke weapons that you may get by luck, such as the Cupid's Bow, which restores health to the enemy unit. This of course can be exploited for experience gain. Actually, a number of the joke weapons are actually quite useful for their accuracy, even with the low damage output -- sometimes you want to actually land the hit rather than gamble on RNG.

If you want to use child units, you'll want to optimize for them. This may make your play a bit more complicated than you'd like, so just use your first playthrough to get familiar with the game mechanics and different units, then optimize marriages in a second/later playthrough.

Don't aim for balanced units, since they're likely to end up neutered with the way RNG usually plays out. In general, you'll want to stick to whatever class branch the character appears with, but there are several characters who would prefer a different class branch that they can get by marriage or friendship. For example, both Sakura and Azama have pretty high Strength growth, so you may want to reclass them to a physical fighter unit (Swordmaster, Berserker, or General are some possibilities), but they come as the Priestess/Monk class, which are healers. If you need healers, keep them as such. If you have enough healers, you can manipulate their feelings/relationships to switch them to the offensive.

I wouldn't expect too much from the actual story, but the gameplay is absolutely fantastic and is the reason that people keep playing Fates, so I hope you enjoy!

Which version are you playing first?

Conquest is the hardest for sure and would require the most tips.

Birthright is pretty easy, even on hard. The only thing to keep in mind is A ranking with Kaze as quickly as possible.

The big problem with Arthur, as I see it, is that his crit evade is practically non-existent - and his garbage tier personal skill DOES NOT HELP ANY. I really don't like having to gamble every time a certain unit enters combat, especially repeatedly, and ESPECIALLY when said gambles can be very costly, as in potentially game-ending. I stay as far away from Berserkers as humanly possible for more-or-less the same reason.

Like I said, I'll probably end up benching Arthur once I get enough flexibility with the number of units in my camp.

Fighters/Berserkers are very much high risk, high reward. They definitely need all the pair-up bonuses that they can get because of their abysmal Luck stat and innate Crit Avoid penalty. If you can get Arthur or Charlotte to have a good partner, they definitely make it easier to clear a map. Arthur in attack stance with Effie or Selena was huge for me in Conquest 10 just because of all the axe/club- and naginata/lance/shuriken-wielding enemies, so weapon triangle advantage at least didn't work against him. Of course, RNG is cruel and some enemies will get that 5% crit...

People should play however suits their strategy style, but they shouldn't shy away from a class/unit until they get a chance to tinker with them. I like Arthur only until I get his son Percy, whose personal skill is wondrous, and Charlotte for whatever beastly child she produces. I usually make Charlotte's child a Berserker because they'll have all-around better stats than her. (Not to mention Charlotte's only real use is in PvP, as her personal skill will allow her to dominate the field, but let's not talk about PvP...)

Advice? My advice is to not take anyone's advice and make your own impressions for your first play through. If you get stuck, then you can come back here for help.

The problem is, the reward is far outweighed by the risk, imho, because crits are far more potent in enemy hands than in player hands. So whilst they can make it easier to clear a map, they can just as easily get critblicked off the map and cause a reset. That, needless to say, is no bueno.

Maybe, but looking at the fact that Arthur's pretty much always a liability to the team and Charlotte couldn't hit the side of a barn if her life depended on it.... yeah. (And I agree on not talking about PvP, as the less said about it, the better, as I see it)

Also of note, the servant you have for most of the game is dependent on your avatar's gender.

If MU is Male you get Felicia who is more magic orientated and Jakob being the more battle specialist, he's a pretty good jaegan. I'll recommend making the MU female in your Conquest file as you get two children when you marry a Gen 1 Unit who is not Corrinsexual and you an unlock Jakob's child paralogue earlier.

This app should help you plan your pairings if you plan on using child units. It's very difficult to get a very bad pairing in this game unless you really tried. 90% of the child units default class the same as their corresponding parent (the few exceptions are Azura's, Kaze's, Leo's,and Ryoma's child).

Generally, I'd advise against overthinking it. Enjoy your blind playthrough, you only get one of those. ;)

A tip regarding the servants though, since those have been brought up already: Jakob and Felicia may be prepromotes, but they can actually level up to 40.

You might already know this, but there is a secret third path called Revelations. For spoiler reasons, it is recommended to play this path after you've played (or at least know the story of) the other two. You can only get this path by buying it separately from your game.

Also, you can get some good items if you buy all three paths, so if you have the money for it, I'd suggest getting them all.

Also worth noting that if you can choose between paths, you will get an option called “Branch of Fate”. Selecting this option allows you to skip the first six chapters and go straight to the path split, using the last avatar you created. However, it locks you out of transferring characters between playthroughs.

Best of luck!

A few tips(for Conquest):

Chapters

Chapter 10 is quite a challenge.

Chapter 17, bring all the defense you can.

Chapter 21, personally, is a pain.

Characters

(This might be a bit bias)

  • Effie will keep you alive(Benny is a good alternative though).
  • Nyx, personally, is good. A glass cannon though(Edit: I keep her paired up with Leo. It helps.)
  • Mozu is good(She's not super great, but not super bad either. She's...Balanced pretty well. Depends on her class though).
  • Arthur pretty good(for me anyway)! (Edit: Him and Charlotte paired up are quite a duo for me!)
  • Beruka is Boss(Camillia...not sure,I hear she's good too, but I just used Beruka more)! She's so GOOOOD! On my file, she's almost as tanky(and Strong) as Effie, who's pretty tanky as is!(But again, that's my playthrough.)

It's small tips, but hopefully it'll help you! Have fun experiencing the game! :Joshua:

Speaking of chapters that are a ginormous pain in the ass... Chapter 20 Conquest is just plain awful.

Arthur hits like a truck even w bronze, which also fixes his cevd problems. He can turn to cavalier for shelter and high move, has good availability and decent bases and growths. Hes not amazing but he sbouldnt be avoided like the plague either.

Actually, if you pick Branch of Fate, you will be taken to the Avatar creation menu, so you can change your Avatar if desired. What do not change are the play settings (Normal/Hard/Lunatic and Phoenix/Casual/Classic) as well as the stat increases/level ups for your Avatar of your last playthrough.

Any suggestions before I play? Best characters to use? Best skills?

Advice? My advice is to not take anyone's advice and make your own impressions for your first play through. If you get stuck, then you can come back here for help.

^ This, TBH. For the most part, it's best to just experience the game in its most basic format; you can pretty much feel out for yourself whether someone's gonna be good or not. There aren't really any Esty units that come late and are really weak but get good later; for the most part, whoever seems good will be good. And hell, even if there's someone who's not that good, they can still be usable if you decide you WANT to use them (Nyx and Charlotte were this for me).

About the only thing I would suggest off the bat for a first run is to reclass Mozu into an Archer, esp on Conquest. Bow users are really scarce in Conquest and having another will help immensely.

Also, if you DO decide to use Arthur, definitely remove Gamble from his skill set. His hit rate will thank you.
