They're not exactly costumes, but this still does not answer my original question.

EDIT: Answered by someone else later.

There probably isn't a lot of text in the game to translate, so the translation was finished before the Japanese launch. In fact, all the other European languages are in the game too. (The reason for the later release date for the North America/European/etc. version is probably due to marketing or certification.)

That's not the case...the game treats them as the same character at least in the Japanese 3DS version. Female Robin can be selected in the costume section of Robin. I haven't unlock Male Corrin but it's probably the same thing.

And yeah, they share the same supports as well with the only difference being their voice. (Meaning you don't need to grind them separately)

They are treated as costumes. Once you unlock them in order to access them you go to the costume selection for Robin and Corrin respectively and choose them, their level and stats stay the same and if M!Robin or F!Corrin promoted they also have their promoted costume unlcoked. However unlike with other costume changes, their sprite changes in the character select screen and on the map and as you would expect, their VA and dialogue also changes. I am unsure about the support aspect but I wouldn;t be surprised if that aspect was unique to the alt version where you had to level it up seperately. If you need confirmation I recommend you watch LinkMstr's stream 3 where he has switched M!Robin to F!Robin.

I can confirm that their support options do not change. (Male Robin will have the same support options as Female Robin) As for the dialogue in their support, I can only confirm that Chrom's A+ support doesn't have any unique dialogue, just a different VA.

They are treated as costumes. Once you unlock them in order to access them you go to the costume selection for Robin and Corrin respectively and choose them, their level and stats stay the same and if M!Robin or F!Corrin promoted they also have their promoted costume unlcoked. However unlike with other costume changes, their sprite changes in the character select screen and on the map and as you would expect, their VA and dialogue also changes. I am unsure about the support aspect but I wouldn;t be surprised if that aspect was unique to the alt version where you had to level it up seperately. If you need confirmation I recommend you watch LinkMstr's stream 3 where he has switched M!Robin to F!Robin.

I figured that's how they worked, but they are not literal costumes. Costumes don't get their own pages with the other characters on the website.

Still that system does not lend itself to continuity.

At the moment, I'm doing it by hand and my hex editor of choice doesn't support Japanese symbols. If I could locate the individual files (there are 3000+ candidates to look through), it would be easier.

There probably isn't a lot of text in the game to translate, so the translation was finished before the Japanese launch. In fact, all the other European languages are in the game too. (The reason for the later release date for the North America/European/etc. version is probably due to marketing or certification.)
