Elibe Rewrite Exercise

Recommended Posts

We all have our qualms with certain Fire Emblem games.  So, if you guys have any qualms with the Elibe games story wise, here's the place to tell how to improve them. Maybe you want to rewrite one character, or maybe you want to overhaul the game. Try into enough detail so that it isn't just "mugh Elibe sucks". And most importantly, enjoy yourself!, take it away!

Desmond was actually a depressed and broken individual. The only person he really loves besides his mistress is Guinevere. When he found out his manipulative wife was going to conspire with the nobility of Bern to put Zephiel on the throne (which is his birthright, after all), the desperate and fearful Desmond contacted the Black Fang to have Helene assassinated so that Zephiel might make enough mistakes when on the throne that the people would install Guinevere as queen instead. However, Desmond had unknowingly signed the death warrant for Zephiel's life, at the behest of Nergal. When he found this out, he was furious, but he could not stop the Black Fang from carrying out its mission. Helene caught wind of the plot and dispatched Eliwood, Marquess of Pherae in Lycia, to prevent Zephiel's murder. Eliwood succeeded, but Desmond knew that Helene would never believe that he had intended for her to be killed. Zephiel, ever wary of his father, trained rigorously to one day fight his father. Knowing that Zephiel would inevitably take the throne, Desmond planned his own death by filling Zephiel's cup with a strong sedative, enough to cultivate the lie of Zephiel being poisoned. Prior to Zephiel killing him at his own funeral, Desmond became aware of Zephiel's true nature, and that he knew whatever Zephiel did as Bern's King would fall directly on him after death, but he didn't care, as he knew that Zephiel already despised at that point, and that his reign as king would see Desmond's be undone. For the first and last time, Desmond let his sadness appear in front of the people of Bern as the sleeping Zephiel was being mourned by the people. When Zephiel turned around, sword in hand, Desmond also seemed to smile, as if he knew that somehow, things would be better off without him. His last words were "Thank you, my King." With that, he died. Zephiel then ordered that Desmond's name was never to be spoken in his presence ever again.

I think both of their villains might benefit from some changes.

They could slightly nerf Nergal's power so it doesn't seem like he merely lets the heroes live for fun. Rather than Athos saying how Nergal could have killed them all if he wanted Athos legitimately drives him off.

Zephiel could benefit from being less popular. If everyone but his dad is in love with the guy then he just doesn't have a reason to write humanity off. If Zephiel wanted to implement important but unpopular reforms that his ungrateful populace refused to accept and started demonize him for it he'd have more legitimate reasons for his hatred of humanity.

And make Pent return in Binding blade. It reflect pretty poorly on the guy if he just sat around in his mansion while the world burned around him. We know Pent's a decent guy and a huge nerd so he should be involved in a gigantic war which involves Dragons.

He does have a reason if nobody's love mattered to him except his father.

Pent abdicated his position as Count Reglay in order to continue Athos' studies; I was under the impression that he had moved to Arcadia to do so, since that was where Athos lived, and where I assume that all of his books would be, too; Pent could hardly continue Athos' studies without those.

That said, it would have been nice to meet him and Louise in Arcadia.

I'd probably make Narcian somewhat more cunning and ruthless, though still very much prone to error. Chapter 3 would go as normal with Narcian relegating the occupation of Araphen to Slater. However, at the last moment, Narcian came back as he realised he probably should crush Roy's army sooner than later, and would probably be a good ambush plan anyway. Catching Roy off guard at the end of Chapter 3, Narcian relentlessly chases Roy and co for the next several chapters, resembling a game of cat and mouse. He only backs off in Chapter 8 due to Zephiel not wanting to go head-on against Etruria yet.

He comes back in Chapter 13-14, where he abducts a number of extra dragons to add to his force, while he tries to make a name for himself as the conqueror of Etruria. His military campaign goes badly as in the original, but he does not care, as he intends to raze Aquleia anyway. Narcian actually gets away from the Etrurian palace in Chapter 16...and prepares his dragons to commence the razing in an additional remake-only chapter immediately after. His plans all goes awry, however, due to Fa appealing to the other dragons to walk away, and the enslaved dragons finding out that Roy and Fa ultimately come in peace. Narcian can meet his fate being burnt alive by the now freed dragons, or being captured and executed by the Etrurian Army, or lynched by the Etrurian resistance. On the other hand, Roy's campaign will be lost if the following happens:

- If too much of Aquleia is burnt to the ground, as Etruria no longer has the economic power to take Bern head-on.

- If either Aquleia palace or the Saint Tower is burnt to the ground due to loss of morale.

I would start with giving Eliwood one or two more scenes. Either with Memory prism's, a scene before Roy sets of to the western islands or even just by letter. It is understandable he wasn't used much in the original game. In fe6 Eliwood being sick was just an excuse to have Roy be in charge. Now that Fe7 happened it would be weird to give Eliwood just one scene in chapter 1 and nothing more. He could receive word of Hector's death and his illness could be a source of worry for Roy throughout the game to give Roy some more personal moments.

Secondly i'd give characters like Lilina, Wolt and Marcus the Echoes treatment. Have them take the role of Tobin/Grey or Boey/Mae and give them a scene here and there after some chapters.

But on the whole I don't think the story of Fire Emblem 6 is in need of a rewrite. The story is a little basic, but it does its job and there aren't many....Fates situations in the game. In my opinion the main problem of Fe6 is that it only tells its story and does little more beyond that. So my focus would be on just creating a bit of charm and expanding the characters beyond the minimum to make the plot work.

Eliwood was ill at the beginning of FE6, but enough time passed between the beginning and the end that he could have recovered from his illness. It would have been nice to have him join Roy's army at the end of the game, at least in time to fight Zephiel.
