In this thread, I will talk to you about a personal favourite of mine, none other than General Tauroneo, a former Great Rider of Daein. While Tauroneo is also a Path of Radiance character, I'm posting this thread in this section because he's way more important in Radiant Dawn and also because this section is way more active than the other two sections. I was sad how low he ranked in the CYL poll and I am disappointed why other people don't see him as a good character. What could be the reason behind this?

Background Knowledge

Tauroneo was born into a family of knights who have served the royal family as revealed in his B support conversation with Rolf. Being proud of his tradition, he made his son a knight as well. Unfortunately, his son Josh was severely wounded and his wife got mad at him. To make matters worse, Tauroneo's pride made him train his younger son to become a general but that only served to make his family even madder at his insolence and they left him. In hindsight, he realises his mistake but is made to live with the consequences. This explains why he's always sad to see children fight in a war because he's almost lost his son to war.

Spoiler

B Support

Tauroneo: For generations, we made a reputation for ourselves in Daein as a famed warrior family. Both my father and I had the honor of serving the royal family as field generals. We were a proud family…
Rolf: What happened with Josh?
Tauroneo: I raised him to serve the Daein army, as my father raised me. He tried to live up to my high expectations. He became a decorated knight at a young age and was assigned to the palace guard. However…
Rolf: What happened?
Tauroneo: He took to the field as Ashnard’s personal aide. And he came home on a litter, grievously wounded. He escaped death, but he didn’t escape his wounds. He’ll never walk again.
Rolf: Oh, no…
Tauroneo: My wife nearly lost her mind. She cried day and night, swearing that she couldn’t live if something like that were to ever happen again. She wanted to live in peace…with her mind at ease. She pleaded with me to leave the army. But I couldn’t accept her plea. Our family house was built on generations of proud military command. Our ancient name as a warrior family would not allow me to simply abandon my sworn duty. I tried to salvage our honor by training my younger son. He was just a boy, really. I wanted him to become a Daein general.
Rolf: You did what?!
Tauroneo: I know… I was a fool. I was blinded by tradition and family reputation. By the time I realized my error, my wife and children had left me. Since then… I’ve been living alone in my great mansion, surrounded by countless medals and memories… Alone…for years…

Path of Radiance

The first time you see Tauroneo is in Path of Radiance chapter 21 where he is tasked with defending Daein Keep. Ashnard has all but abandoned Daein and most of the country has been run amok by a coalition of Begnion and Crimean invaders, yet despite such odds, Tauroneo bravely fights on demonstrating his resolve making him a perfect candidate for the skill resolve which quite fittingly makes him stronger the worse his situation is. Despite Tauroneo serving an evil king, he's shown to be morally upright to the extent that he's willing to side with the enemy despite his whole life being dedicated to serving Daein. This is an example of character development as he's finally putting aside his pride unlike when he still had his family.  Furthermore, if he gets attacked by children, he laments the fact that children have to fight in wars. This is in spite of FE lords, who are supposed to be paragons of morality, putting children in their army. What makes it even better is that he lives in an evil country so him having such morals speaks volumes about his strength of character. Other than that, Tauroneo also shows a warrior nature in his generic enemy battle conversation and his conversation against Ashnard making him a multi-dimensional character.

Ashnard vs Tauroneo

Ashnard: Is that you, Tauroneo? As I thought… You betrayed me after all.

Ashnard: …In my father’s time, there was a man who was one of the Four Steadfast Riders. That man grew old and useless, and retired from the front lines. How does his story end, you ask? Come, let us write it together.

Tauroneo: Oh, my king… In all of Daein’s history, perhaps no other ruler has used the talents at his command to the degree you have… But all the same, no other king has chosen a path so incredibly stupid.

Ashnard: Heh heh heh… Will history judge me to be just or evil? We will not know until all of this is finished.

Tauroneo: …Now that I’ve confronted you and traded words with you, I have come to a decision. Throughout Daein, I, Tauroneo, will be known as the king killer. Come! Let me earn my name!

As an enemy

“Ah ha ha! I will cut you down with ease and leave your corpse for the rats!”
—Tauroneo's battle quote

Radiant Dawn Part One

As a character, Tauroneo truly shines in Radiant Dawn. The first time you meet him is in chapter 1-5 where Tauroneo, Zihark and Jill valiantly face off against an entire army of Begnion soldiers. Once again, Tauroneo shows us why he deserves to equip the resolve skill. After the battle, his patience is truly tested by Izuka yet he remains steadfast (1)(2 ) and doesn't give in to immoral tactics. Once again in chapter 1-7, Tauroneo shows us that he's powerful and brave enough to single handily act as a distraction to make it possible to free prisoners. While he usually agrees with Micaiah and against Izuka, he's someone who can think for himself. When Begnion took prisoners hostage at Shifu swamp, Tauroneo actually agreed with Izuka and went against Micaiah thinking that rescuing the prisoners is reckless.

Radiant Dawn Part Three

In part 3, he's put into stressful situations having to fight his former allies for the sake of his country. When Pelleas begs Micaiah to return to the battlefield, Tauroneo tells Pelleas he agrees with Sothe which again goes to show that despite his loyalty to his king, he is willing to criticize him. It also shows that he's a very caring individual who wants what is best for Micaiah. Even after the blood pact is revealed, he thinks about whether leaving the country allows one to escape the blood pact which goes to show he's quite the inquisitive fellow who likes to ponder. Furthermore, he himself is willing to stay in Daein despite the fact it was in such a peril which goes to show he's not willing to abandon his country at any costs. In chapter 3-12, he questions whether Micaiah really wants to go through with the oil plan once again showing how despite being extremely loyal to authority, he's still willing to question it. Regardless, he's willing to give deserved praise to Micaiah for being strong enough to make such a tough and painful decision which goes to show he's willing to give credit where it's due and is in turn inspired by her own resolve. Once Ike arrived and Sothe was captured by Tibarn, he went in front of Micaiah to defend her from Ike and Ranulf, showing his reputation as a white knight. After Micaiah was put into a situation where she failed to give orders, Tauroneo steps up and orders the army to retreat, demonstrating that even in a tight spot, he is calm, collected and intelligent. Later on, he is loyal enough to follow through with Pelleas' orders to kill him no matter which of the three choices you choose which goes to show he can make tough decisions in terrible circumstances. He's willing to throw praise to Pelleas when he truly deserves it which shows that Tauroneo is a man who gives respect when it is deserved.

Spoiler

Tauroneo (***)

Tauroneo: Sothe.
Sothe: Hello, General.
Tauroneo: I thought you were going to leave the army, taking Lady Micaiah with you.
Sothe: I was. But now we can’t. Both Micaiah and I are from Daein. We can’t abandon our own country.
Tauroneo: Hmm. I wonder if it’s the same if you leave Daein…
Sothe: I don’t understand.
Tauroneo: If you abandoned Daein and fought on the side of a different country, I wonder if you’d still be cursed?
Sothe: Who knows? I’m not a sage. In any case, it doesn’t matter. Micaiah would never leave Daein behind.
Tauroneo: I see. Sothe, here. Take these.
Sothe: Why are you giving me these?
Tauroneo: I kept them as a parting gift to you. Since you’re staying, I’d like you to take them now.
Sothe: General…

(Obtained Boots)

Spoiler

Tauroneo:
“Micaiah, it was you more than anyone else who used to hate plans like this…”

Micaiah:
“The apostle’s army has incredible numbers. We wouldn’t stand a chance taking them head-on. They would march right through us. We need to give Pelleas more time, but if we hold back, the senate will know we’re up to something. For now…let’s just try to draw this out a bit and stop the apostle’s army.”

Tauroneo:
“Lady Micaiah. Your strength moves me. I shall not falter.”

Spoiler

Tauroneo:
“Such will, at so young an age! …As you wish, Your Majesty.”

Ending

Tauroneo ends up becoming the leader of the army after Micaiah becomes Queen. He is also stated to be a pillar of statesmanship which goes to show that he's great at politics.

Impressive defense of the Big T-roneo.

I like him as a character, the Rolf support does so much for him. The Ashnard boss convo (despite the typo in the above SF transcript in it "in my father's time is said by Ashy- it makes no sense otherwise) is also quite good. The Four Steadfast Riders as a whole interest me, I wish we got more on them.

The Largo support is a bit stupid, but it does show a more casual and less knightly side to Tauroneo, which is great. Unfortunately his potentially interesting Ranulf, Stefan, and Elincia supports got cut.

Why Tauroneo has no dialogue in the pre-battle discussion for his joining chapter (and no Ena talk) are beyond me. Although I guess it's because he's resigned himself, lost in his misery with his monarch and loss of his family, to a life in battle, almost suicidal in a way.

RD does Tauroneo well too since he shows up so much, even into P4 he makes appearances.

Overall, a very well built character along the way of Lorenz/Duessel.

Since I've never played PoR I actually didn't know all of that about Tauroneo and I'm glad that I do now!

Honestly I've always really liked him and even if he does end up outshined by Gatrie he's always been a massive point in favor of my DB team. I really like how he seems like a wise leader and serves as a sort of father figure to Micaiah through Part 1 in terms of guidance. He isn't really developed too much in RD but what you do see of him is amazing and I really do love his character.

You're probably right about the typo. True I'm also interested in them. Too bad Fiona didn't have any supports as it would be nice to learn about her father. PoR didn't have enough support conversations but that's alright because of base conversations.

What's even more strange is that he doesn't have a boss conversation with Izuka. At least from what I read in SF and FE Wiki. What appearances did he have in part 4? I only remember him giving Pelleas a dark tome in a base conversation. I think putting him on Tibarn and Elincia's group is out of the place but him being with Pelleas makes sense. Though I think Pelleas should have been on Micaiah's team. Also, Izuka fight should have been on Micaiah's route.

Duessel is another fantastic character. Can't wait for Ghast Station to make a support science on him because whenever he's asked who is favourite FE character is, he says Duessel.

I like Tauroneo enough to star him in a completely ridiculous interactive fanfic [1] Huzzah for self promotion!

So apparently Tauroneo gets kicked out of Daein if he kills Pelleas. I wonder what would happen if Micaiah was the one to do that. Probably nothing.

As a unit, he may get outshined by Gatrie but not as a character. Indeed, I like his fatherly relationship with both Pelleas and Micaiah. I'm a sucker for the wise old men archetype of characters. He has all the good qualities a general should have.

Also despite being an old man and an armoured knight, he has one of the best character designs IMO. That facial hair and white armour look quite stunning.

I always liked him. His support with Rolf ensures Tauroneo is the best Lorenz since the game goes into detail on just about how much being a famed general has cost him. POR nicely gives the impression of Tauroneo feeling rather empty inside.

In RD Tauroneo remains a trustworthy presence at Michy's side, has his baddass moment and can be amusing when conversing with Izuka.

Tauroneo is one of my favorite Tellius characters. I just think there was more that could be done with him. Tauroneo really needed more supports then he got and especially one with Ike. They could have explored his relation with Greil or go into detail about why Tauroneo either doesn't know the identity of Greil's student turned killer or why he won't say it if he does know.

I too would have liked to see his relationship with Ike considering he was friends with Greil.
